Coach turns to playing at 35By Daniel BellThe Newswire [email protected]

As spring approaches football players of all performance levels will began gath-ering at facilities around the country to start preparing for the upcoming season, and that includes 35-year-old college athlete Jimbo Hale.

Hale, a former Coosa High School foot-ball/strength and conditioning coach, will actually be 36 before he straps on his pads for his second season of college ball. Hale starts at defensive end for the Trinity Bible College Lions, and he says his age isn’t really a factor because he’s always kept himself in shape.

“The hardest part is recovery. But it’s OK. I don’t mind it too much. Other than that there’s not too much differ-ent. I’m probably better now than back then because I am a lot more focused now,” he said.

Indeed, it was his focus – on his family and his relationship with God – and his ability to give up his dream of playing college football that eventually brought him to a tiny town in North Dakota.

Years ago, when he was closer to a tra-ditional college football age, Hale en-rolled at Shorter College with the idea of joining their upstart football program only to learn his eligibility had expired per NAIA conference rules. He became depressed as he felt like his dream of playing college football had slipped away and in his depression he says he began to neglect his wife and child and his relationship with God.

“I had my priorities out of order. I was putting my dream of playing foot-ball ahead of my wife and child,” he said.

Hale developed a relationship with a football coach at Shorter who began to coach him in life, to help him see he needed to make a change.

“I was selfish. I decided to make a change and put God first and my family second. I had to put football on the back burner, and more than that I had to put it in the dumpster,” explained Hale. “My life changed for the better. I became the man my wife needed me to be. I became the man God needed me to be.”

So, with the idea of playing ball put away, Hale began coaching at Coosa. And he was happy. He loved the school and he loved working with the student athletes.

“I learned more from them than they learned from me. They have a spot in my heart forever,” Hale said.

While he was at Coosa, Hale started a fundraiser for the special education de-partment so that needy students with disabilities would have money to buy Christmas presents for their families. He and a wheelchair-bound student with Cerebral Palsy collected dona-tions leading up to the Carpet Capital 10-Miler, a road race that takes place in December in Dalton.

“They they went out and complete the 10-mile road race. My husband pushed the student in his wheelchair the entire

10 miles to order to raise money,” said Jessica Hale.

In his final two years at Coosa, Hale and his students managed to raise more than $2,000 for their efforts, and they also inspired others. Last year, the first December since Hale left the school, the annual fundraiser continued on in his

absence. Hale led Coosa’s Fellowship of Chris-

tian Athletes club while he was there, and played a significant role in the cre-ation of their Ignite program, a monthly student-led worship service.

“He truly loves his students and has a strong desire to bring out the best

Photos contributedJimbo Hale is a former football coach at Coosa High School. But last year he left the school to go back to college, where, at 35 years old, he plays college football. He is pictured below at left wearing the number 40.

Untraditional players says faith brought him back

“I left it up to God. If God wanted it to happen, he would open the doors. And I'll tell you, the doors flew open.

in everyone, regardless of background or how much faith they have in them-selves,” his wife said.

It was while he was a Coosa that Hale says God gave him the urge to play football again. He wanted to return to college anyway to earn a specialization in strength and conditioning. So he did a little research and found a college foot-ball conference that would allow anyone to play so long as they had not yet played four years of college ball (the problem at Shorter was the amount of time an athlete had spent in college, regardless if they had played college football or not).

The National Christian Colligate Ath-letic Association provided Hale with a doorway, but the NCCAA didn’t imme-diately open that door. A lot of NCCAA colleges are also accredited with other conferences, which means they follow both set of rules, so for Hale to play college football, he had to find a NCCAA school that was only a NCCAA school.

When he first discovered Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota, he dismissed the idea. After all, football was no longer the main priority. He couldn’t possibility move his wife and now three children all the way across the country.

But he says God put pressure on him to at least consider the idea, so he contact-ed the head coach at Trinity by e-mail to see how he’d feel about a 35-year-old football player, and the coach said he’d love to have him.

The two talked on the phone for two hours the first time they spoke, and not just about football.

“He had went back and played college football later in life too, so he had a soft spot for an old guy like me wanting to play ball,” said Hale.

But still, there were so many obstacles in the way, so Hale and his family began to pray about it.

“I left it up to God. If God wanted it to happen, he would open the doors. And I’ll tell you, the doors flew open,” said Hale.

With his family’s approval – and perhaps more importantly to Hale, God’s – he resigned his post at Coosa and moved to a town of 1,500 people with no traffic lights and only one gas station.

The Great Spaghetti Challenge was a huge success and will become an annual event, said organizers.

George Pullen, president of the board of the Rome-Floyd County Commission on Children & Youth, said about 1,200 people attended the event at the Rome Civic Center.

All proceeds went to the Rome-Floyd County Commission on Children & Youth, an organization that helps combat child abuse and neglect.

Pullen said it would be about a week before they knew exactly how much money was raised Friday night.

The Rome-Floyd County Fire-fighters sponsored the event and, along with competing for the best spaghetti sauce, the group also helped prepare and cook other foods including apple cobbler.

Twelve teams vied for top honors

for the best spaghetti sauce. The Rome-Floyd County Fire-

fighters won the People’s Choice Award.

The Judges’ Award went to Rome City Schools.

There was also a Commissioners’ Grudge Match Award based on a competition between the Rome City Commission and the Floyd County Commission.

That vote count was close, but the honor went to the Floyd County Commission.

The other eight groups compet-ing at the Great Spaghetti Chal-lenge were Floyd County Depart-ment of Family and Children’s Ser-vices (DFCS), Floyd County Juve-nile Court, Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, Kidz Loft, Noon Op-timist Club of Rome, Pirelli, Pul-len’s Ordinary Bicycles and Super-Kids Early Learning Center.

Pullen said, “Everyone I talked with said they are going to do it bigger and better next year.”

He even hinted that it may be

at an outdoor venue such as the future Town Green area in down-town Rome.

“We’re very pleased with the turnout and how well this went,” Pullen said.

Event organizers suggested that everyone should get out those old recipes and perfect that spaghetti sauce, because the Great Spaghetti Challenge will be an annual event.

Berry College is proud to welcome trailblazing football coach and best-selling author Tony Dungy as the third speaker in the Gloria Shatto Lecture Series. Dungy will be speaking at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in the Steven J. Cage Athletic and Recreation Center.

An NFL head coach for 13 seasons, Dungy enjoyed tremendous success with both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Indianapolis Colts before retir-ing in early 2009.

He made history in 2007 as the first black head coach to lead his team to a Super Bowl victory. The Colts’ 29-17 defeat of the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI also made Dungy just the third man in NFL history to win Super Bowl championships as both a player and a coach.

In addition to his success on the football field, Dungy also has made a name for himself as an author, reach-ing No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller list. His credits include a memoir, “Quiet Strength: The Principles, Prac-tices, and Priorities of a Winning Life,” and “Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance.”

He also has written a best-selling chil-dren’s book, “You Can Do It.”

Dungy has been involved in a wide variety of charitable organizations, in-cluding the Fellowship of Christian Ath-letes, Athletes in Action, Mentors for Life, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Clubs, the Prison Crusade Ministry and All Pro Dad.

He also has worked with Basket of Hope, the Black Coaches Association Na-tional Convention, Indiana Black Expo, United Way of Central Indiana and the American Diabetes Association.

Ticket distribution for this free event is now under way. Although the ma-jority of the tickets have been reserved for Berry students, faculty and staff, a limited number are available to the general public.

Individuals wishing to attend the lecture may pick up a maximum of two tickets by visiting the Office of Public Relations and Marketing on the third floor of Hermann Hall. These tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis. Tickets must be picked up on campus before the event date. No tickets will be available the night of the lecture.

Please note that no group tickets are available at this time. Call 706-236-2226 for more details.

EMA launches CodeRED systemFloyd County has contracted with

Emergency Communications Network, Inc., of Ormond Beach, Florida, for its “CodeRED” high-speed telephone emer-gency notification services.

The CodeRED system will deliver pre-recorded Emergency Notification Weather Warning messages to target-ed areas or the entire County at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour.

Weather Warning notifications will be delivered for severe thunderstorms, tornado and flash flood warnings.

These alerts are generated from the National Weather Service. Anytime a weather alert is issued in your area of the county or for the entire county you will receive a call from CodeRED weather alert.

Scotty Hancock, Floyd County’s Emer-gency Management Director, cautioned that such systems are only as good as the telephone database supporting them.

“If your phone number is not in

the database, you will not be called,” Hancock said.

CodeRED not only offers faster calling rates and improved message delivery, it gives individuals and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly to the system’s telephone data-base. Emergency Management empha-sizes that this is an extremely impor-tant feature to mitigate the loss of life or property.

Those without Internet access may call Floyd County non-emergency number (706-236-5002), Monday through Friday, (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) to give their information over the phone.

If no one answers please leave a voice message with the required information which includes first and last name, street address (physical address, no P.O. boxes), city, state, zip code, and primary phone number, additional phone numbers (op-tional). Your information will be submit-ted as soon as possible.

HALE from page 2

“It’s been a struggle. It’s 40 miles to the nearest Wal-Mart, so there’s nothing here but a gas station and the college, and there’s snow on the ground two-thirds of the year,” said Hale.

During a recent sunny-and-70 day in Georgia, Hale said a blizzard had just came to town in Ellendale.

“There’s about six to eight inches on in the ground right now,” he said on the last day of March. “But we have peace in our hearts. It’s worked out really well. We know this is where God wants us to be.”

When he arrived at camp last fall, Hale said he was one of the stron-gest on the team, and he won the starting defen-sive end position before the start of the season. Unfortunately, a serious injury kept him off the playing field for most of the season, so he’s really looking forward to the coming fall.

Still, from the sidelines,

Hale became the team’s spiritual leader.

“It was a little weird at first, but now there’s a mutual respect and we get along just like I’m 21 again. I’ve made some lifelong friendships and

faith has a lot to do with it,” he said.

Those friendships aren’t without some good-na-tured ribbing though.

“They call me pops or grandpa, but it’s all in good fun,” he said.

At Floyd we know the apprehension a woman feels when it’s time for her annual mammogram. We know the fear she feels when the diagnosis is cancer.

You can know your risk. You can know how to check yourself, when to get checked, and, if there is cause for concern, you can know today what to expect tomorrow. Know yourself. Conduct a monthly breast self exam and schedule an annual mammogram, because knowledge is power. Early detection really is the best protection against breast cancer. It’s a matter of yes and know. OPINION

Don’t be a foolU.S. state, federal and local authori-

ties across the United States are strug-gling to contain a rising tide of prescrip-tion drug abuse, which federal data show is now the single-biggest cause for an increase in drug overdose deaths.

Here are some facts on prescription drug abuse in the United States:l In the 45-54 age group, overdose

deaths fueled by prescription drugs now surpass motor vehicle deaths as the number one cause of accidental death. (Congressional testimony by Len Paulozzi, an epidemiologist with the National Center for Injury Preven-tion and Control, on March 12).l Nearly 7 million Americans abuse

prescription drugs — more than the abuse of cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, Ecstasy and inhalants combined. That compares with 3.8 million in 2000, an 80 percent increase. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Nation-al Survey on Drug Use and Health)l Number of Americans going into

treatment for abuse of painkillers rose 321 percent between 1995 and 2005. (White House Office of National Drug Control Policy).l Total number of stimulant pre-

scriptions in the United States soared from about 5 million in 1991 to nearly 35 million in 2007. Prescriptions for opiates — hydrocodone and oxyco-done products — rose from about 40 million in 1991 to nearly 180 million in 2007. (Nora Volkow, Director of Na-tional Institute on Drug Abuse, March 12 congressional testimony)l Drug-related emergency depart-

ment visits that involved prescription opioids rose 153 percent from 1995 to 2002, from 42,857 to 108,320 (U.S.

Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)l Deaths involving prescription

opioid analgesics rose 160 percent in the five years from 1999 to 2004. By 2004, opioid painkiller abuse deaths outnumbered total deaths involving heroin and cocaine. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)l Illicit trade in prescription narcot-

ics — including fraudulent insurance claims for bogus prescriptions, treating phantom injuries and other illegal de-ceptions — drain health insurers of up to $72.5 billion a year, including up to $24.9 billion annually for private insur-ers. (Coalition Against Insurance Fraud)

With April fools day passed, we need to decide not to be fooled by our health care system, which is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. When will we wake up to the true drug and health problem in America? Health does not come in a pill, potion or shot.

The greatest doctor, pharmacy and healer lies within you. Wake that healer up by removing interference in the nerve system so your brain can proper-ly communicate and therefore control every organ, tissue and cell in your body. With proper communication comes proper health. Chiropractic is the only health care system designed to care for the entire person (body, mind and spirit) rather than its pieces or parts. Don’t be a fool with your health.

Live with passion. Live clear.

Minivan Chronicles:

Commissions entertainingBy Jessica LindbergSpecial to The Newswire

A city commission meeting offers as much in the way of cheap entertainment as a cost-cutting couple out on a date night could want. Comfy seats? Check. Comedy? Check. Drama? Check. Inter-esting people watching? You betcha. If the city put in a coat check room and a bar, the room at the top of the stairs in city hall would be packed every month.

Even without liquid refreshment, these meetings should be full to burst-ing. With the threats to end curbside re-cycling, the backtracking on red light cameras and the various nicks and dings in public safety budgets, one would assume every meeting would be packed with as much dander as a herd of feral cats. Instead, each meeting draws citi-zens with specific items on the agenda and maybe a few other spectators.

No one expects to drop into the middle of American Idol or Top Chef or any other reality show and have any connection to the contestants. A dedi-cated viewer watches from the begin-ning, getting to know all the characters: who is this season’s guy-next-door? Who will be the new airhead? Who has a future, who has plans, who looks like they could really do something and who looks like they are just in it for show?

Imagine if local citizens followed the city or county commission meet-ings with the deranged enthusiasm of online Idol forum members with names like “vot4jus10.” Someone could print shirts with slogans like “Team Kim” or “Team Evie,” or “Garry’s Driving Club.” Someone could print translations guides for some of the more mumbly or inarticulate commissioners. There would be that nerd in the room who knows more about Robert’s Rules of Order than any self-sufficient member of society should, the citizen who raises his hand and tries to correct the com-mission when one of them misstates a notion or a second. Area news orga-nizations could shift their focus from straight news to performance reviews of each contestant, I mean, commis-sioner. The public broadcast ratings on Channel 4 would go through the roof.

Recently, the city commission meet-ings enjoyed a bit of a ratings uptick over

the Etowah Terrace skirmish. The gov-ernment arm of South Rome would like to build a big brick rectangle over that way for some poor and/or old people; the neighbors would rather they not. The entire picture involves lots more acro-nyms, name-calling and a catalogue of past wrongs. It is quality drama.

Of course, for the citizens involved it does not feel like must-see-TV. It involves serious issues like proper-ty values and quality of life and other big platitudes that make for a good letter to the editor. Watching some of these dandered-up speakers at a recent meeting, I realized that much of their anger has roots in coming to the game late. For some, this is their first dust up with their local elected officials, and they are incensed, outraged, livid, at the audacity of the government to even consider a proposal that would be so outside the wishes of the local citizens. They want copies of letters, meeting minutes, e-mails, birth certificates, Kroger cards; they want documentation that would help explain and illuminate the puzzling behavior of their leaders. In short, they want to understand just what the hell is going on here.

But it isn’t puzzling behavior. Anyone who follows local government on a regular basis understands that these men and women are not out to get one group or another; they aren’t vindictive or even particularly sneaky. One can trust a government body like the com-missions to be exactly what they are: a group of regular folks elected to do the best they can. On occasion, we can trust them to be sleepy or confused, kinda like Paula Abdul but without all the dancing. We can trust them to screw it all up and we can trust them to try to fix it, and we can certainly trust them to get it very, very right almost as often as they get it very, very wrong.

Beyond the Etowah Terrace brouha-ha, there will be another local melee about something or other; perhaps next it will be the pillage of the land across from Ridge Ferry park by the Vikingesque Ledbetters. Put a com-mission meeting on the calendar; tune in now when the season starts, rather than trying to pick up the storyline in the middle. It really is the best cheap date night in town. Dear John: A couple of years ago I installed some fluorescent lights under my carport ceiling. I’ve noticed that when it’s cool or even humid outside they won’t always come on or sometimes will even flicker. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

C.J.

Dear C.J.: You didn’t say, but I’d guess you in-stalled standard fluores-cents like would be used inside a home or build-ing. If so, about all you could do to remedy your situation would be to replace them with units designed for outdoor use.

A fluorescent lamp emits light when an electric current flows through the gas that’s inside the bulb. Un-fortunately, in cool or damp weather it takes a higher voltage to get that current flowing and sustain it so that you get continued light. I guess because of manufactur-ing costs, a standard flu-orescent fixture is not designed to do that.

What you need are fix-tures and bulbs that carry an HO (High Output) rating. They are more expensive, but they are designed to operate in many weather conditions.

These are the types you see in gas stations and many other commercial applications. It can get a little confusing because a standard bulb number might be F96T12/CW and the HO version is F96T12/CW/HO.

The HO fixtures and bulbs have different sockets and pin struc-tures from the standard ones though, so they are not interchangeable.

Most building supply outlets usually stock the HO fixtures, just not in as many varieties as the standard and possibly more decorative units.

How many times have you made a New Year's (or any) Resolution to eat better and/or lose weight only to become tempted by your old habits, discouraged by boring, unrealistic diets, and within a few weeks re-turned to eating those foods you know aren't good for you?

Most of us have done this many times over; all good intentions full of energy and motivation, then broken promises made to oneself (which further damages our self esteem and ability to trust ourself), followed by feeling guilty and depressed from not following though, usually then followed by eating that whole piece of chocolate cake (or whatev-er your “weakness” is) instead of the one little bite you told yourself you would have, because “why not?” is the thought by that time.

Usually by this time we are beating ourselves up and needing even more of our comfort foods to soothe our wounded self esteem. It is a vicious cycle we are doomed to repeat until we make a real change in how we think and how we love ourselves and how we ap-proach our food choices.

Unfortunately, the more we eat these “bad” foods, the more we crave them. Nutrient deficiencies play a large part in this. When we have a mineral or vitamin shortfall our body tries to tell us it needs something. Unfortunately we don't hear it as “I need some broc-coli.” Rather, we hear “there is xyz fast food establishment, I'd better go get something to eat.”

Making and keeping resolutions is a complex conscious and uncon-scious decision involving not only our mental decision making abili-ties, but also making sure our emo-tional decision making is on board as well. You might need some support and guidance around to find out why you sabotage yourself. Don't hesitate to get that support. Isn't it worth it to make some changes in your lifestyle if its going to help you

feel better then you've felt in years, look better than you've looked in years, increase your energy, improve your memory, drop some weight, and improve your mental, emotion-al and physical health?

When approaching these changes don't make the mistake of fol-lowing someone else's choices, i.e., someone else's diet plan. Don't make the mistake of think-ing mathematically when plan-ning your course of action. By this I mean counting; counting fat grams, counting calories, glycemic indices, etc. This is not a natural way to eat and will not work in the long haul.

We are social creatures and our eating is a social activity. I don't necessarily mean that we always eat with others, but again I am refer-ring to the culture within which our food choices are embedded . Food is meant to be enjoyable. Once we start counting and weighing and re-stricting, all the joy is gone and we will find ourselves seeking that joy any place we can find it.

Also consider these things: Locally grown and naturally grown is best because you deserve food that is free of chemicals, additives, preservatives, and genetic engi-neering. And because the mineral content of organically grown foods is considerably higher. And because the flavor is noticeably better.

Maybe you are too young to have had the experience of eating real food. Try a farm fresh egg for that wow factor. It is just like the differ-ence between the tomatoes we grow ourselves versus the tomatoes we purchase in the store that have trav-eled thousands of miles, were picked green and ripened by ethylene gas on the long journey to our local store. There is just no comparison.

It is not just tomatoes that have this huge difference in their flavor; it is all of our fruits and veggies. Did you know that 70 percent of the lettuce we now pur-chase is genetically modified?

Just like nearly all the corn — fresh, canned, frozen, or pro-cessed. Did you know that the Ge-netically Modified (GM) Round-Up Ready (an herbicide) corn that is predominantly grown today is killing the monarch butterflies? Wonder what it is doing to us?

Raw food, plant based as well as dairy, is superior for the body because it is full of enzymes, vita-mins, and minerals. Cooking food destroys all the enzymes and a lot of the nutritional value in that food as well, so even if its organic, if it's cooked, it's dead! Raw fruits and veggies and living foods (seeds, grains, and nuts that have been soaked and sprouted) are optimal because their nutritional value is superior and completely intact.

When making your food decisions, make the decision to eat food that will help your body detox, rebuild, and heal. Experience for yourself the renewed energy levels and vibrant health you will experience when you make these choices. Grow some of your own food. Even if you live in an apartment you can still most likely grow some fresh herbs – power-houses of enzymes and nutrients. If you have a patio or a deck you can grow in large pots or hanging baskets. You can even grow toma-toes and strawberries in hanging baskets, as well as others. If you have a piece of dirt, make use of it.

Get to know a local farmer or backyard grower that will sell you some of what they grow. Develop a relationship with the food you eat and the folks that grow it.

We'll all be the healthier and happier for it. Here's to Happy Healthy Living!
