Brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus –
In the business of the Synodical Convention held in 1995 the following resolution was passed: WHEREAS, The opportunity to receive the Lord's Supper each Lord's Day was a real-ity cherished by Luther and set forth clearly with high esteem by our Lutheran Confessions (Article XXIV of the Augsburg Confession and of the Apology); and WHEREAS, Our Synod's 1983 CTCR document on the Lord's Supper (p. 28) and our Synod's 1986 transla-tion of Luther's Catechism both remind us that the Scriptures place the Lord's Supper at the center of wor-ship (Acts 2:42; 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:20, 33), and not as an appendage or an occasional extra; therefore be it Resolved, That The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in convention encourage its pastors and congregations to study the scriptural, confessional, and historical witness to every Sunday communion with a view to re-
covering the opportunity for receiving the Lord's Supper each Lord's Day.
Since my installation at The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, your pastor has been meeting with the Board of Elders and we have discussed the Synod resolution stated above and, if you will, the ―pros and cons‖ of offering weekly communion to this congregation. Fortunately, we didn’t have to reinvent the wheel and come up questions and search to find answers. Since this resolution was adopted many congregations and pastors have taken up the call to search the Scrip-tures and our Confessions in regard to this. There are also other questions, not necessarily theological in nature, that arise because, let’s face it, for many congregations of the LC-MS, offering Holy Communion on a weekly basis involves CHANGE. Your pastor was able to sort through many documents and present to the BoE a concise presentation au-thored by Rev. Klemet Preus that addresses many of the questions that have arisen. After further discussion, it was agreed that The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Inglewood would be-gin to offer Holy Communion on a weekly basis beginning the first Sunday in November 2010. Copies of the paper by Pr. Preus are available in the Narthex for any who would like to read it. If, after having read the article, you have questions, please feel free to contact your pastor either via email,
phone, or visit with him in his office.
One thing must be made clear – Holy Communion is NOT mandatory. The Confessions speak quite clearly regarding ―forced‖ communion. This action is being done for two very important reasons: For those who are not able to attend every week – they will not be deprived of the reception of the Supper because it’s not the 1st, 3rd or 5th Sunday of the month, and in the words of St. Ambrose, as quoted in the Augsburg
Confession, ―Because I always sin, I always need to take the medicine.‖
Blessings to you all as we grow in Christ.
Pr. Hindenburg
The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Ingle-
wood has been blessed! Next month, we get
the opportunity to recall and share our rich
75-year history as a Lutheran Church family.
As any family, we started small and simple, we
grew with lots of kids and families, we sup-
ported Christian education, we always empha-
sized rich and abundant Lutheran principles
and worship, and we are experiencing now a
time of stability as a much smaller congrega-
tion. Even though we no longer can support a
Christian school on our property, the school
building revenue enables our work to continue
in this community. The text of Psalms 128 is
most appropriate - Blessed is everyone who fears
the LORD, who walks in his ways! You shall eat the
fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be
blessed, and it shall be well with you.
Our latest blessing occurred when Pastor
Bruce Hindenburg accepted our call as a full-
time pastor. He and his wife, Karina, have
come from a church (Shepherd of the Sierra, in
Coarsegold, (Northern) CA) that he helped
establish 13 years ago. Having arrived in May,
they bring a new enthusiasm, new activities,
and new leadership, missing 4 years since our
last full-time pastor. Already, we can appreci-
ate two new mid-week classes, one for the
book of Romans and one studying the Augs-
burg Confession. Visits to shut-ins and the sick
have increased to comfort several unable to
attend our services. In addition, Pastor, in this
short time, has given extra effort to officiate
five funerals and memorials for members who
have died. Karina lends her skills for this news-
letter – one of several means of caring and
sharing for our members she hopes to begin.
We can be thankful for so much.
What blessings are to come for The Good
Shepherd Church? The text of Psalms above
says everyone who continues to support the
work of our Church shall be blessed. We re-
member many strong and devoted members
no longer with us and honor their work sup-
porting this Church. We need to build upon
this rich heritage. We, therefore, trust in God
and our new Pastor to lead and guide each of
us to be good stewards of the Word and work
of our Church.

LWML Sunday, October 3 The first Sunday in October is traditionally set aside for the celebration of LWML Sunday across our na-tion. The ladies of The Good Shepherd will participate as greeters and readers and can be recognized by their LWML purple clothing. The authors of the 2010 LWML Sunday special worship service, ―People of God...In the Word,‖ are Rev. Kenton Wendorf and Rev. Nathan Wendorf, father and son. Rev. Kenton Wendorf is married to Janice Wendorf, President of the LWML. Did you know that the Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) is the official women's auxiliary of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and was founded in 1942? At the heart of LWML is its focus on missions. Each biennium, a mission grant goal is set by the voting assembly. The goal is funded by supporters through monetary gifts placed into LWML Mite Boxes as a thank offering to God and with a prayer for our worldwide missions. In its first 65 years, over $85 million have been given to sup-port missions all over the world. A special ―Mites for Missions‖ door offering will be collected on LWML Sunday to help with national as well as district mission grants. A list of current mission grants will be included in the LWML Sunday bulletin. Mite boxes are always available on the LWML bookshelf in the narthex. If you’d like more information about the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, talk to Royce Morton or Gayle Tarr, The Good Shepherd’s co-leaders. All ladies are welcome to join us at our quarterly Sunday meetings as we, expressing the LWML motto of Psalm 100:2, ―Serve the Lord with gladness.‖ Upcoming LWML Dates: Saturday, October 16, 9:30 a.m. - Zone Rally/Celebration at Ascension Lutheran Church, Torrance – Program ―Sing to the Lord – A Musical Journey Through Life‖ with Dawn Hayes-Stewart

Serving This Month
In ecclesiastical use, the stole is a long
scarf, worn by deacons over the left
shoulder and across the body resem-
bling a sash, and worn by priests over
both shoulders with ends hanging par-
allel in the front, resembling a scarf,
over an alb and underneath the chasu-
ble, if worn.
Dispensing the mark of office to a man
as having the Authority of the Church,
the stole is presented in a special cere-
mony, the ordination service, and is
thereafter worn during the Divine Ser-
vice and during Confession and Abso-
lution.
The stole symbolizes a yoke. As an ox
was put under a yoke, so the pastor.
But the yoke he bears is not the burden
of the Law, but the yoke of Christ, the
Gospel. The congregation is to see
Christ, not the pastor.
It also serves as the millstone around
his neck, should he not preach the Gos-
pel in its purity and administer the sac-
raments rightly.
The stole the pastor wears will match
the color of the day, corresponding to
the church calendar, not unlike the
changing colors of the altar paraments.
Only let each person live
the life assigned to him,
and to which God has
called him. -
1 Corinthians 7:17a
Liturgical Garments - The Stole The subject of the stole was brought up in our Wednesday night study of the Augsburg Confession when talk-ing about the preaching of the Word. While many people think that the pastor goes into his office to toss on his "fancy dress clothes" to appear more special than the congregation, what the pastor wears while exercising his duties are steeped in meaning and history. As you can see, it's much more than a matter of just throwing on another layer and it includes solemn preparation.
