Relieving Principals Report
Congratulations to all our students who received their P.B.L badges at our assembly on Friday. This week the students that qualify will be participating in their reward days. I was very pleased to see that the majority of our students will get to join in. It is good to see our students making sensible choices and decisions in our classrooms and playground. Well done. As was announced in our previous newsletter this Friday will be Mrs Percival's last day at our school. As many of our staff are absent and the time frame has been quite rushed we would like to be able to give Mrs Percival a proper farewell on our Presentation Day. After the ceremony we would like to invite parents and friends to bring a plate so that we can share a special morning tea with her as thanks for her hard work and dedication to our school. We are very sad to see her go but we realise what a wonderful opportunity this is for her and wish her all the best in her new role. We know that she will do a wonderful job. Please be aware that supervision at school begins when the teacher on duty commences at 8.40. If for some reason your child needs to be here before that, please ensure you book them into Before School Care. This is a great service that we have onsite to keep your children safe if they need to be at school early. On the issue of safety I would ask that you support us in reinforcing our rules regarding the Staff car park. One of these is that the students are not to walk through it at any time. Please ensure that your children are dropped at the gates that will allow them to walk safely up the path into school. We would also ask that you help us by modelling this behaviour when you are with your children and do not enter or leave the school via the car park. Your help in reinforcing these safety messages would be greatly appreciated. Our students are all learning how to interact and socialise appropriately with their peers. From time to time children can have issues with their friends that may cause them and you as their parents distress. If you find yourself in this situation please alert the staff so that if necessary we can take the appropriate action needed to ensure all children are happy and safe at school. If we are unaware of a problem then we can not help fix it. Please do not feel you need to deal with these alone. If you think it warrants the attention of the Principal you are more than welcome to contact them. If they are away or on leave there will always be someone else who is filling this role. Please feel free to contact them via the school email or phone.
K-2 had a fantastic day at Walkabout Park on Thursday. The children got an insight into the lives of Aboriginal people from the past. We saw bathing pools, gathering areas and hand paintings in a cave that were over 40000 years old. We learnt about tress and plants that could be used to alleviate illness. We heard of their clever and innovative ways for collecting honey. The highlight for the students was eating termites! Some even came back for seconds and thirds. They are apparently very yummy but I will have to take their word for that. This was a great cultural experience for our students. We then had some very close encounters with an echidna, baby emus, a snake and a very beautiful koala. It was a great day. Thanks to Mrs Rogers and Ms Graham for their organisation.
This Wednesday 3/4 are off for their zoo snooze at Taronga zoo. We hope they have a great time and we look forward to hearing all their exciting stories when they return.
I hope everyone has a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone in Term 4.
Kind regards,
Maree Greaves

1/2G Class News
No home readers will be changed this week but the children do still have their spelling lists to work on if they wish. I will re-
sume readers first week back next term.
This Wednesday is our rewards day. Children can come to school dressed in casual or dress up clothes as long as they are suita-
ble for participating in the usual class activities up to lunch. If they are not the students can bring them and get dressed at the
end of lunch if they prefer. Please remember they must have filled in shoes and no singlets or crop tops. After lunch the chil-
dren will have a disco in our class. A separate note went home last week asking the children to bring in a small amount of party
food to share with their class on Friday for a small class party. ( NB this is separate to the rewards day) Any questions please
give me a call.
Library News
The book fair was extremely successful, raising over $2000 worth of books
purchased by our students and families. Once again the community support was fantastic. We
received $400 in commission to our library and we cannot thank Mrs Percival enough for
co-ordinating this event.

Walkabout Park Excursion
K/1/2 had a massive day on Thursday at Walkabout Park. The students met a variety of Australian bush animals
and then enjoyed a bush walk with a very informative commentary from our guide. Our guide told us about the
bush resources used by our indigenous people. Our guide gave us some valuable information about making
shelters to using plants as medicine to what we can eat in the bush. We all enjoyed a picnic lunch with a nice
afternoon tea of termites to finish our day!

Dear Parents and Carers,
It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Amanda Percival at the end of this term. Mrs Percival has been a constant presence through my children's time at Vacy school and has been an amazing source of support for many kids who've needed that little bit extra along the way. She has brought music to all of us through her ever-so-patient work as the Choir Mistress (at least that's what they were called when I was at school!) as she has gently coaxed beautiful songs from our kids. As a netball coach she has been excellent, bringing her passion for the sport into the school to motivate the girls. Mrs Percival has reinvigorated our library, got it organised and open for lunchtime browsing and borrowing, making reading more fun and more accessible for all the children in the school.
For all of these things, as a school community we'd like to thank you, and wish you well with your new venture. On a personal note, I say thanks for being the one my kids have always chatted about so enthusiastically, you've been an ever smiling presence, a joy for them to be around and work with.
Best wishes,
Joe Thompson

Dear Parents and Carers,
Each year I go for a bit of a motorbike ride on a cheap old bike with a bunch of family and friends to raise funds for Down Syndrome NSW, the SCRAPHEAP ADVENTURE RIDE!
The idea for the ride is to buy a bike for less than $1000, get it roadworthy and ride it to the destination via any route you choose. And of course, raise funds for Down Syndrome NSW through donations. Down Syndrome NSW provides vital services to families with Down Syndrome children and ongoing support to young adults.
This year the Scrapheap Adventure Ride is off to Tingha near Inverell in northern NSW at the end of September, and we're expecting more than 100 riders to come from all over NSW, and interstate. This is the 8th ride and to date over $500,000 has been raised.
Our team The Hillbillies are a group of family and friends from the lower Hunter valley and we're looking for your support to raise lots of money to support people with Down Syndrome and their families. Attached is a photo of my daughter Ursula (Year 5) and I on the bike we built last year (we got the trophy for "Best Scrapper"!) riding on a sheep station at Nymagee in western NSW
Your support is important, it's easy to do and it's fully tax deductible. Simply click the link below and it will take you to The Hillbillies supporter page. Follow the instructions, make your donation and you'll receive a receipt by return email.
To donate, click this link: http://www.mycause.com.au/page/156996/the-hillbillies
You can see the full details of the Scrapheap Adventure Ride and more information about Down Syndrome NSW by clicking on: http://www.scrapheapadventureride.com.au/
Thanks in advance for your generous donation.
Regards,
Joe Thompson & The Hillbillies
