NRVC – General Meeting September, 2015

Apologies received from Neville McFadyen, Barry Scarr, Bill and Collene Kalb, Brett Williams, Tom Broadbent. The Treasurers report was read, and approved – seconded by George Browning and Quida Lockwood. Ken congratulated Rudy and June Galea on an excellent well planned Dennis Paynting run. It was decided that as Andre as a relatively new member, the run for next year will be planned with Ken, Trish and Andre. Rudy presented the Trophy to Ken and Trish.

Club Captain: Neville spoke regarding the two runs that unfortunately clash on Saturday 19th . Steggles Chicken Visit and Plattsburg Public School Spring Fair. It was decided that 1 Point be allotted for both runs. Registration Day 8th November – at Neville McFadyen’s Workshop – Lot 101 Campbell Street, Tomago. Please remember to bring your Car Rego Papers, as well as your Insurance Papers, plus your Membership Fees. Presidents Run – 15th November. XMAS PARTY 6th DEC. PLEASE FORWARD DETAILS OF CHILDREN ATTENDING, FORMS AVAILABLE AT NEXT MEETING TO FILL IN. BEING HELD AT THE TRAINS AT TORONTO. There being little business to attend to, the Raffle was held. Following on from this Glenn Towndrow showed members his Presentation and all information regarding our Spring Cruiz-In coming up in October.

This is our largest Club event – which really you could call OUR BABY! Having been

developed from one man’s idea of being able to hold some sort of car run which could include many other car clubs, motorbikes, etc. and ending up at a Venue which could hold quite a few hundred vehicles for Motor Enthusiasts and their families.

NRVC COMMITTEE MEETING

Apologies on the night were for Doris Holmes, Neville McFadyen, Ros Walker. Minutes were taken by our Vice-President Terry Jones. The Insurance papers for Spring Cruise copy for Glenn Towndrow have been sent, all ok. Next general meeting volunteers will be asked to stay back after the meeting for the Spring Cruise. Thanks to Glen for roping off for Broke venue on Saturday for parking on Sunday. All positions will be up for re-election at the General Meeting in January, start to think about nominating. Discussion on Duncan Gary Minister of Transport for future log book, 60 days or trips/movements. Waiting on more information at present. Meeting closed 8.30 pm. FROM THE EDITORS DESK. Thanks Terry for taking the minutes on the night. A group of our Ladies went on a Whale Watch out of Newcastle Harbour late in July, and unfortunately there were no Whales in sight. However, as the Cruise Ship went out as far as the Ships were waiting off shore, we managed at least to see a Seal sitting and sunbathing on top of the rudder on one of the ships. Unfortunately a couple of weeks later I had to see the Dr. and when he asked me what was wrong, all I could say was that I was suffering from Seal Flu. He asked how come, and my answer to him was that I did not see any Whales, just one Seal.

Well folks, what another great day for our Mid-week on a Thursday, we met at

Maccas at Edgeworth, 15 Cars and 23 people, it was a little windy, but in the words of Aubrey Brooks, “Neither, wind, rain, lightening or storms stopped us from enjoying The Muster Point run.” Bill lead off with Dianne Paoletti driving in the rear, now things went slightly askew when we arrived at the traffic lights at the end of the Freeway, as Bill had forgotten that there was no right turn, so a little detour of a UTURN, took place at the next set of traffic lights, arriving at the Muster Point to be met by Aubrey and his wife. The Muster Point is a 70 tonne steel sculpture with bronze cast figures, objects, and components from the Steelworks, the building is 8m x 12m x 8m,with associated pathways (railways sleepers and ballast), located near entrance to steelworks site, George St & Selwyn

St off Industrial Drive, Mayfield. This house-size industrial artwork was constructed as a collaboration by famous Newcastle sculptor Julie Squires and steelworkers in 1999, to mark the closure of the steelworks. The whole structure, inside and out, has many stories to tell about the history of steelmaking in Newcastle. Of course these stories are told by Aubrey Brooks, in a way that can be understood by all, we found out that June Galea had been married to Aubrey (In his BHP Life, you had to be there for the story) along with many other fabulous stories of how he started at BHP, what it was like then, the women and the men that worked there, how the Apprentices were

treated, along with lots more, he kept us amused and saddened that this History of Newcastle is no more. This is a must go to place, next Mid-Week run is to the Movies, on 15th October, 2015, The Certificate was given to George & Marilyn Vella for the mighty effort they put in every month. Thanks everyone for another great run, some of us went back to the Maryville Tavern for Lunch, as the sky darkened once more, then the sun came out, we saw no hail, though it was reported all over the Hunter Valley, & Central Coast.

Spring had certainly sprung for the Broke Village Fair this year –you couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day,

temperatures ranged from 21-25 degrees! We all met at Mc Donald’s Edgeworth at 7am which seemed too early

for most of us, especially for Terry who later explained why he was so exhausted; because he had dreamt about

mufflers all night. So after most of us had our caffeine hit it was time to head up the express way to the Fair.

It was a great turn out with 22 cars attending this year’s event, with an assortment of vehicles from Fords,

Holden’s, Mazda’s and the odd Toyota just to name a few. It was also great to see some new faces in the team,

as well as members that we had not seen for a while.

After we set up it was time to scope out the markets and see what was on offer; this year saw more than 50

market stalls, entertainment – including Elvis, attractions, food stalls, wine tasting from the local vineyards and

this year a petting zoo. A number of the members decided to do the free Bulga Open Cut mine tour – where they

experienced views of the mine (from the coach) and agreed that it was well worth it!

We had some fantastic awards presented on the day with Terry winning the first which was a ‘special

achievement award’ (and very expensive award), for his recent achievement of being the only member who has

ever been fined whilst on club plates, certainly not an award that he would like to get again…. Brian Johnston

then presented the recognition awards to Adrian Venners, Quida Lockwood and Lindsay and Barbara Doran.

The final award and to top off the day, was presented to Mary Jones (a lovely framed picture that Terry had

bought on the day and everyone had admired) called the ‘birthday suit edition’ award – which made her change

to a vibrant shade of red. A good laugh in all, as let’s remember it is a family event.

Months ago we were asked if we would bring Percy our 1939 Australian Oldsmobile Sports Roadster in to the Annual Wallsend Winter Fair, for 2015, as they needed a Convertible for Ronald McDonald to be driven in the Parade. We had a ball and the kids loved it. It was wall to wall people, 40,000 I am told, stalls, Schools, Music, Entertainment, prizes you name it and it was there. We saw a lot of familiar faces in the crowds, and even had 2 Guards in the Parade. Reporter – Collene Kalb.

Folks, what a fabulous day at Krankit , rain, thunder, etc, could not stop those of us that enjoy our cars, was only wet

stuff, was with Steve Houston, Phil Ilfield, and other friends, but we were nice and dry inside all day, the organisers did a great job under difficult circumstances, the rain eased and the crowds came in. Percy our 1939 Australian Oldsmobile Sports Coupe, won Top Convertible, and Phil Ilfield with the NRMA Van won Best Australian. To all the other winners in both the cars and the Bikes well done. It was good to catch up with many friends.

Early and wet start at McDonald with 13 cars. When we arrived at Steggles there was 20 cars including an extra one, a nice 64 Ford Fairlane. There was face painting, throwing the ball in the hole, jumping castle, fishing for ducks, cup and saucer ride, find the number and baby chickens and turkeys also lots of other things to do. There were hot drinks, sausage sandwiches and chicken kebabs. The weather was very unpredictable one minute it was raining the next the sun was shining. There was a lot of good deals at the chicken shop I saw a lot of people carrying boxes out to their cars and a lot of people used shopping trolleys which Terry had to help take them back to the shop so he got the nick name Trolly Boy. I think everyone enjoyed themselves, even some big kids had rides on the cup and saucer ride. I am sure it was a very successful day for Steggles shop and Westpac rescue helicopter service. Thank you to all the members that helped make it a very good day.
