President’s Message

In this space you have read many times about the impor-tance of volunteers to both the success and the essential

character of NEDA events. Volunteers are the heart andsoul of NEDA. They personalize all our events and activi-ties, and they actually run the organization and all its activ-ities, as NEDA has no employees. This means they alsokeep your dues down while maintaining high program qual-ity. Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, and each vol-unteer has a different level of time to commit and a widevariety of reasons for doing so. There are volunteer jobs tofit each volunteer’s interests and time. Some of the volun-teer jobs require some training to do them well, while oth-ers are self-explanatory. But all are essential to a success-ful show. And we don’t have enough of them.

We are not the only equestrian organization that uses orrelies on volunteers. We heard from others in our region atthe USDF convention that smaller dressage organizationshave a hard time recruiting enough volunteers to “staff”their events. Since we know that this is not unique to smallorganizations, and the NEDA board had already beenthinking about how to encourage more volunteers, NEDABoard member Deb Carr-Kirk VOLUNTEERED to puttogether a winter program of workshops throughout theregion, in collaboration with other equestrian groups andorganizations. The purpose of the workshops is to introducenew volunteers to dressage competitions and their particu-lar volunteer needs and requirements, and to advance theskills of others looking to step into more responsible roles.Training will include scribing for judges, the responsibili-ties of ring stewards, scorers, and an overview for all showparticipants, with plenty of time for networking and gettingto know others in your area. If there is interest from even-

ters, fence judging may be able to be added to the workshop.

Seven workshops (one in each state) are planned forMarch, April, and early May, in advance of the start of theshow season, and, as of this writing, workshops are sched-uled in eastern Massachusetts (serving the Rhode Islandarea), Maine, New Hampshire, upstate NY andConnecticut, with additional workshops in development inVermont and western Massachusetts. The cost will be min-imal with donated space and materials available on line.Check the NEDA Website for the details and to learn ifthere’s a workshop near you. If there is not, and you areinterested in hosting one, contact Deb Carr-Kirk, at [email protected] or 508-539-3534. Z

Sandwich, MA –

Volunteers are the backbone of most dressage shows, and thanks to the efforts of the New England Dressage

Association (NEDA) led effort, in conjunction with otherRegion 8 GMOs, potential volunteers will now have thechance to receive training in some of the behind-the-scenesaspects of running a dressage show. NEDA is offering aseries of traveling workshops that will take the sport ofdressage to a higher level by training scribes, stewards, scorers and show participants.

“In 2012, NEDA will be holding seven workshopsthroughout the United States Dressage Federation (USDF)Region 8. Our goal for the workshops is to offer a fun expe-rience combined with an educational opportunity for poten-tial volunteers,” said Debbie Carr-Kirk, of NEDA.“Through these workshops we hope to create a volunteerwork force that will help host better competitions.”

The workshops will be held in March, April and May,and so far the schedule includes: Johnson & WalesUniversity in Rehoboth, MA, the University of New

Hampshire in Durham, NH, Pineland Farms in NewGloucester, ME, The Cornell Cooperative Extension inBallston Spa, NY, the Green Mountain Horse Association inSouth Woodstock, VT and Cutler Farm in Medfield, MA.“We are still working on finalizing the facilities in

Connecticut, and will be announcing that soon,” Carr-Kirksaid. “By coordinating with equestrian organizations andfarms in each state it is our hope that these volunteers willbecome an asset to the many groups and many shows inthose areas. Anyone involved in the show world knows thatmost equestrian disciplines operate on volunteer power. It’simportant to train our volunteers so that shows everywherewill be fun for competitors and volunteers.”

The workshops will last four hours and will include 45-minute sessions for scribes, stewards and scorers, as well asa 30-minute session on basic show dynamics and anoverview of relevant equestrian organizations. “There is theopportunity that a fence judging component may be addedif the host facility so desires,” Carr-Kirk said. “In that case, the length of the workshop would be increased to fivehours.”

The cost of each volunteer workshop will be minimal,as most materials will be able to be found online and willinclude relevant materials for each participant. NEDA isworking creatively to come up with no cost options to attendthat will not only include valuable information, but a snackas well.

“NEDA is the largest single chapter of the United

States Dressage Federation and we are known for offeringtop quality education to our members,” Carr-Kirk said. “Weare excited to be able to offer these workshops, in conjunc-tion with the other GMOs in the region and it will be agreat opportunity for people to meet and greet and networkwith other equestrians throughout the region.”

For more information on the workshops, to host a work-shop in your area or help teach a workshop, contact Carr-Kirk at [email protected] or 508-539-3534. Z

Elysium Farm Creates New Grant Fund for Breeders at The Dressage Foundation

B BY MELISSA FILIPI, THE DRESSAGE FOUNDATION b

September 6, 2011 -

The Dressage Foundation announced today that a newfund has been established to help support breeding

programs in the United States. The Fund provides finan-cial assistance to breeders to pursue educational opportuni-ties related to breeding that will advance their careers, pro-mote sound breeding practices and further enhance thequality of U.S.-bred dressage horses.

“I wanted to do something to support breeders in theUnited States ever since I found my ‘perfect’ horse, a local-ly-bred Dutch Warmblood. From that experience, amongothers, I gained a better understanding of the challengesfacing breeders in this country. I learned how serious manyof them are about improving the quality of U.S.-bred hors-es,” said Abbey Henderson, of Elysium Farm.

The Elysium Farm Fund for U.S. Breeder Excellence atThe Dressage Foundation will begin making grants in 2012.Completed applications are due no later than May 1st forconsideration. Maximum grants of $1,000 per year for pro-grams held in the United States and $5,000 per year forprograms held overseas are available. Additional fundsmay be available in future years, as donations increase the

fund balance.

“Abbey had a vision and a passion for helping breedersin the United States," said Melissa Filipi, DevelopmentDirector for The Dressage Foundation. "She took the firststep by contacting the Foundation, and working with us tosee this dream become a reality. Here is a list of suggestions:

1. Make sure that you haven’tincluded any personal expenses inwith your business expenses. That’s abig IRS no-no. The easiest way totrack business expenses is have both achecking account and credit card ded-icated strictly to business purposes.

2. Accumulate your receipts andother documentation by type and keepeach in a separate envelope or file –real estate taxes, charitable contribu-tions, feed and grain, etc. Then totaleach type and write the total on theenvelope. Don’t give your tax prepar-er receipts and ask them to calculatethe totals for different types of income

and expenses for you. Most willcharge extra for this service. And ifyou haven’t calculated the totals your-self, how will you know if what thepreparer entered is correct?

3. Once you have the totals, compare them with the prior year forreasonableness to be sure that youhaven’t omitted or transposed somenumbers.

4. When you speak with your taxpreparer, be sure to tell them aboutany significant changes in your life inthe past year AND any significantplans for the future. For example, thepreferable tax treatment for the pur-chase of a new tractor may be differ-ent if you are expecting your incometo decrease in the next year (havingthat long postponed back surgery sotraining income will decrease) vs. ifyou are expecting a big increase inincome (hired an assistant trainer soyou can take on more training horses.)

5. When the return is complete, compare the return with the prior yearreturn. This will help you to spot anyerrors. No matter who prepares thereturn, you are ultimately responsiblefor what is on it.

6. Whether you owe or are get-

ting a refund, e-filing with electronicbank access is the way to go. If youare getting a refund, your return isprocessed much more quickly thanpaper filing. By providing your bankinfo to allow direct deposit of therefund, the time frame from filing toreceiving your refund is shortenedfrom weeks to days. And if you owe,you can select to have the funds with-drawn from your bank account on thedate that the return is due. No morerushing to the Post Office on April 15in order to keep the money in yourbank account as long as possible.

7. Above all, don’t wait until thelast minute to get the information toyour tax preparer. This dramaticallyincreases the probability of mistakeson the return. If you can’t get theinformation together on a timely basisso that you can file on April 15, askyour tax preparer about the possibilityof filing an extension.

Some instructors may beable to travel to you, but as they arevolunteering their time, they shouldnot be asked to travel an undue dis-tance from their location. If you seean instructor on the list that you areinterested in applying for and haveany scheduling questions, please con-tact the instructor before applying tobe sure they will be able to accommo-date you. There are a few instructorswho have school horses available, soyou do not need to own your ownhorse or trailer. NEDA Education OutreachThe NEDA Education Outreach program has been devel-oped by the Education Committee in an effort to addressthe membership's request for more clinics, including ridingand auditing opportunities for dressage enthusiasts of alllevels. Since it is nearly impossible for NEDA to organizeclinics that would be equally accessible to its almost 2,000members across 7 states, NEDA is introducing theEducation Outreach Program to fill that gap.

At present, the Outreach program offers Tier I - Advertisingassistance to any NEDA member organizing a clinic (non-profit groups are exempt from required membership).Advertising opportunities will be given to help promoteyour event in exchange for auditing (and sometimes rid-ing) discounts for NEDA members at the clinic. Plans fortwo more tiers offering financial grants and organizingpartnerships with NEDA are being considered and detailsof those will be announced later this year.

If interested in complete details, please contact Angela Prenosil, Education Coordinator, at
