[|4 `ç ÇtÅx |á jçtàà tÇw \ËÅ t äxÜç zxÇàÄx zâç4I’m considered a senior cat at twelve years old, but that justmeans my adoption fee is only $25.00. It certainly doesn't meanI don't have tons of love to give! I enjoy sitting by the window, soaking up the sun and bird watching. I used to live in a nursinghome, so I’m pretty outgoing and wouldn’t mind if you have a lotof visitors. I’d probably be okay living with other cats andmaybe, just maybe, a gentle dog. Kids in my new home can beany age.You may think I am winking at you, but the truth is my right eyehad to be removed because of a severe infection. I’m all betternow after my surgery, and it doesn’t bother me at all.

The Farm Report 5June 2015

The advantage of eating vine-ripened fruit andvegetables is that they are the most nutritious. The vast majority of nutrients enter the fruits

and vegetables as they ripen in the soil or on the vine/tree.When the produce is picked green and shipped to variouslocations, then gassed to change to a ripe color, thenutrient content can be much less than optimal. Fruit andvegetable nutrition is the best source of the thousands ofplant chemicals, phytonutrients, that help to keep ourbodies healthy and fight free-radical damage that occursfrom our daily activities.

So, whenever we hear “buy local” it’s probably a goodidea for produce whenever possible. This gives us theadvantage of getting the fruits and vegetables that haveripened naturally.

June is the beginning for all those Farmer’s Marketsand they will soon be full of beautiful, healthy choices.Because Naperville and Aurora are such large, neighboring municipalities, we have a great advantage ofhaving several locations on different days:

Naperville Farmer's Market AssociationFifth Avenue Station Parking LotSaturdays, June 6 through October 31 • 7:00 a.m. - noon

Farmers Market at St. John's St. John’s Episcopal Church, 750 Aurora Avenue Wednesdays, June 3 through September 16 (closed July 1)3:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Aurora's Farmers Market EastOur Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 701 S. Eola Road,Aurora, IL 60504Thursdays, July 9 through August 27 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.

For the more adventurous among us, our ownplanting season is upon us. We can grow many vegetablechoices in containers or small pieces of our landscape, andthey look beautiful, as well. When planning how tobeautify our yard, think of planting perennials likeoregano, chives and lemon thyme, as well as annuals suchas dill, parsley and basil. Several of the herbs have viningvarieties that can be used in our flower containers outfront, while most edible plants look better for ourlandscape when grown on the sides or back of our yards.Proper planning can produce a great harvest and lookgood, as well.

For produce in containers, choose a container largeenough to handle the type of plant: a single pepper plantwill need a smaller container, while a tomato plant willneed a medium to large sized container. Strawberry potsare specially designed to grow that berry. A larger crop ofvine-type vegetables (cucumbers, zucchini, babypumpkins) will need a larger, longer box or planter with awall or trellis to climb. There are even some ingeniousideas of planting in special containers on the wall.

Whichever vegetables are chosen, start with a plan ofwhere to put the containers based on how much sun eachwill need. Make sure containers have adequate drainagebecause frequent watering is necessary, as containers dryout more quickly than the ground. Container plants needmore frequent fertilizer feeding because of the increasedwatering and drainage. Stake the plants using a decorative“pot trellis” or “cage” or even a bamboo stake. As theplant begins to grow, pinch off the small branches nearerthe bottom, as this will cause the stalk to grow thicker andstronger with larger branches near the top.

Whichever way we decide to get our “local” produce, getting that fresh produce onto our tables packs thenutritional punch we need.

Car & BoosterSeats for ChildrenBy Julie Smith

I am often asked by parents about car and booster seats forchildren. More specifically what are the age and weightrequirements for each child safety restraining system? Being aparent of two children myself, I know what a confusing roadthis can be because there are several types of systems. Rear‐facing, convertible, forward facing, combination, all‐in‐one, boosters, boosters with backs, etc. It is enough to make yourhead spin.

The Child Passenger Protection Act of Illinois requires that allchildren under the age of eight must be properly secured in anappropriate child safety restraint system. Always read andfollow the child safety seat and vehicle manufacturer’sinstructions. Height and weight limits can vary from eachmanufacture. Select a car seat based on your child’s size andnot age.

Newborn ‐12 months | Children under age one and weighingless than 20 pounds should always ride in a rear‐facing infantseat or a convertible seat used rear‐facing.

Ages 1‐4 | It is recommended that children remain in a rear‐facing safety seat until the age of 2, or until they are at theupper height or weight limit of the seat. When a child outgrowsa rear‐facing seat, he or she may transition to a forward facingseat with a harness system. Weight limits range from 22‐40 lbs.

Ages 4‐8 | Children should be secured in a forward facing safety

seat with an internal harness system until they reach the upperheight or weight limit allowed by the car seat manufacturer. When a child outgrows the forward facing seat, he or she maytransition to a belt‐positioning booster seat. Weight limits rangefrom 22‐40 lbs.

Ages 8‐12 | Keep your child in a booster seat until he or she isbig enough to fit in a seat belt properly. For a seat belt to fitproperly the lap belt must lie snugly across the upper thighs, not the stomach. The shoulder belt should lie snugly across theshoulder and chest and not cross the neck or face. Weight limitsrange from 40‐100 lbs.

Front seat | Safety experts and automakers agree that thesafest place for any child age 12 or under is the backseat.Airbags can kill young children riding in the front seat. Airbagtechnology is getting more advanced and vehiclesmanufactured after 2006 must be equipped with sensors thatidentify children and very small adults and deploy the airbagwith less force or not at all. This doesn’t mean it’s okay for kidsto ride up front, but it does mean fewer risks for adults of shortstature.

Other tips |

• Buckle children in the middle of the back seat when possible, because it is the safest spot in the vehicle.• Buckle children in car seats, booster seats, or seat belts onevery trip, no matter how short the distance.• Set a good example by always using YOUR seat belt.

With the arrival of warmer weather, manyhomeowners throughout our neighborhood havebeen looking to maintain and improve the quality

of the exterior of their homes such as new windows, doors, roofing, siding, landscaping and hardscaping. Please rememberthat any change to the exterior of your home must be approvedin writing by the modification/architectural review committee.

Here are some tips on how to gather estimates fromcontractors when you are looking for remodeling work to be doneon your home!

Every single contractor offers free estimates. This truly istaking time to meet with you and educate you on solutionsneeded for your home. No ethical contractor is going to high-pressure sell you, so don't feel obligated to work with thatcompany. But you should be open to the time given for free andbe attentive to the education and solutions being provided.

Some homeowners are confused when contractors are notovereager to bid a project. If contractors get the sense that youare not really ready to do the work, or if you just a price shopper, they may feel that you are not worth their time. Here is how youcan get them more eager to bid your project:

• Tell the contractor you are gettingonly 3 bids, not 7 to 10 bids!• Tell the contractor you are not lookingfor the lowest bid, but the best value foryour dollar.• If you were referred to the contractor or you saw their work inyour neighborhood or they advertise in your newsletter, makesure you mention this to them!• Tell the contractor that all decision-makers will set asideadequate time to discuss details about the project. You have abusy schedule and so the same goes for contractors. But yourproject and investment deserves the right attention so thatinformative decisions can be made together.

Hiring someone to work on your house involves risk, so doyour homework before you commit. One important tip is AVOIDcontractors who ask for full payment up front.

Whether you’re planning a big remodel or just want to getyour gutters cleaned every few months, you have to feelcomfortable about your decision and secure enough knowledgeto make an educated hiring decision.

Get 3 BidsBefore HIRING a Contractor

Have you put off doing yourkitchen long enough? Is thisthe year you have vowed to do

something with your cabinets? Have thehorror stories of kitchen remodeling madeyou afraid to even think about it? Withprices approaching and surpassing $100,000for full kitchen remodeling, it is no wonderthe Average Joe and Jane feel a littleoverwhelmed.

Enter Kitchen TuneUp. This nationallybased, locally owned franchised company inDowners Grove, owned and operated byMarty Ceranec offers “Kitchen Solutions forany Budget.” “I think some people getsticker shock when they look at the price ofredoing their kitchen, says Ceranec, butthere are many, many ways to update thekitchen without breaking the bank.Sometimes people are overwhelmed by allof the options. We work with clients everyday who have the same anxieties.”

For seventeen years, Marty has beenredoing kitchens and saving homeownersthousands of dollars by coming up withcreative solutionis for their kitchens. Hemust know what he’s talking about. Sincejoining Kitchen TuneUp (KTU) based inAberdeen, SD in 1994, he has won 6 monthlyCustomer Service Awards, Rookie of theyear award in 1994. Franchise of the yearaward in 2000 and Customer Service Awardof the year in 2008.

“We are successful because we stickwith the basics such as returning phonecalls, showing up on time, and completingthe work as promissed. This doesn’t sounddifficult, but is often lacking in thecontracting business,” says Marty. That, plus the ability to offer many differentoptions and price points powers hisbusiness. “We are not trying to sell ourclients more than it takes to accomplishtheir goals according to their budgetary
