A Few Words From Our President ~ Tom Billett

The Carlisle Import Show was a great

success this year. We had the most beautiful weather that anyone could

remember in recent years. Not too sunny

or cloudy, not too hot or humid nor too

windy. In fact the perfect weekend for cars and camaraderie with club members

and other car enthusiasts. A very full

show field with a lot of cool cars and an interesting crowd. The flea market

seemed larger this year and I even found

a few items to purchase … which always makes my wife happy!

While Sue and I were working at the club tent, renewing dues and selling regalia, a

gentleman stopped in and bought some

items. One of the things he purchased

was a set of Triumph cufflinks and tie bar. Sue mentioned that they would

make a nice collectable as no one ever

seems to wear them anymore. He said he still did. He then introduced himself as

Ken Braithwaite, a retired Navy pilot and

now a United States Ambassador to Nor-way. He said he was looking for vintage

Triumph items to take along on a special

trip with his son. They were shipping his TR6 to Belgium to participate in the TR

Register Liège-Brescia-Liège,

a nine day tour of several European

countries. We wished him luck on his journey - A very interesting encounter

indeed.

The driving season is upon us. The Spring Run is rescheduled to June 2nd

and I‟m sure the rest of the summer will

bring nothing but sunshine and fun runs with other CPTC members. Please try to

attend as many as possible this summer,

as we have some new and interesting events planned.

Keep Calm and Motor On!

The joint was jumpin‟ at the CPTC tent

on a very rare (for PA) sunny day! With the weather finally cooperating, there

was a great turnout for the show - both

in numbers of cars and those with an interest in them.

Here‟s a look at the Import side of the show from the British car perspective ...

Southern Sojourn ~ by Cliff & Kathy Grube

On Sunday, April 29th, Kathy and I left

home (the TR4 in tow) for Wilmington, North Carolina. The reason for the trip

was the AACA Southeastern Divisional

Tour sponsored by the Cape Fear Chap-ter. The tour interested us due to the fact

that the area is steeped in history from

the early 1700‟s and we had no knowl-

edge of the area in general. Needless to say, it was a wonderful experience. There

were seventy five cars registered and

they ranged from a 1910 Buick to a 1994 Ford Mustang. Frankly, I have trouble

thinking of cars that I bought new as

antiques; but … well, you know what I mean.

We had the only British car and heard plenty of good natured ribbing about the

Lucas organization. There was a 1984

BMW 320i and 1972 VW Beetle for some

company. We formed small groups as we departed on the first day‟s tour. Our

group consisted of a „36 Packard, a „77

Buick Electra, a „35 Ford Phaeton and us in the Triumph TR4 with the top down.

Our first stop was to the beautiful Airlie

Gardens for a walking tour, then cruising the beach town of Wrightsville Beach. At

this point we picked up the group mem-

bers in the VW. The next stop was for a catered southern barbeque for the entire

group; but our „35 Ford friend broke

down en route with differential issues

and the VW girls were not seen running again. After a great meal of fried chicken,

pulled pork, shrimp, hush puppies and

plenty of sweet tea, we were off to the North Carolina Aquarium located at the

end of Kure Beach.

Page 7 Triumph News

It was well done, with divers describing

different creatures as they swam by. We then headed back north to visit a club

member‟s amazing car collection. Even

though his last name was Healey, his

collection was mostly rare corvettes and 60s era, big block Chevys. Very rare stuff

worth millions.

Here, the Packard would not start due to an ignition failure. We drove back to the

hotel in the TR4, along with the Buick

Electra lacking functioning turn signals. We were still running after eighty miles.

Day two took us back to Kure Beach and Fort Fisher, a Civil War site which may

have sealed the fate of the Confederacy.

Then we boarded a car ferry to historic

Southport for lunch and shopping. Pock-ets empty, we traveled to Brunswick, a

town damaged by the British in 1776

and by the North during the Civil War. The visitor center volunteer took pictures

of our car - she and her husband had

one the same color years ago. The final stop was for ice cream at a pick-your-

own strawberry farm. Still no turn sig-

nals on the Electra. Another 80 miles.

Southern Sojourn (Continued)

Day three involved another ride back to

Kure Beach to visit the Battleship North

Carolina, which played an important role during the Second World War. It was

built in Wilmington in 1937 and this is

its final resting place. We were free to explore the nine levels of this great ship.

Well explained by signage and audio, this

was a wonderful experience.

The remainder of the day was in down-

town Wilmington, both visiting the Cape

Fear Museum of History and Science and the river walk and its fine restaurants. A

short forty eight miles. The evening was

topped off by a southern buffet, short on speeches, long on fine food & hospitality.

We headed home on Thursday after five days of beautiful sunny weather with

temperatures in the eighties. Best of all,

we saw a part of the country that was

totally new to us and made some good friends as well.

Italian Firm Buys Controlling Stake

in Britain’s Morgan Motor Co., Ltd.

For the past 110 years, boutique British

sports car manufacturer Morgan has built cars by hand, embracing tradition

over the efficiency. The company has

been predominantly owned by the Mor-gan family; but on March 5th a majority

stake purchase by the Italian private

equity group InvestIndustrial was announced, bringing change - and

capital - to the Malvern Link factory.

InvestIndustrial describes itself as “one of Europe‟s leading independent invest-

ment groups focused on acquiring con-

trol positions in Southern European me-dium-sized companies that are leaders

in their fields.” The firm‟s portfolio is di-

verse; but it‟s no newcomer to the trans-portation sector. British automaker As-

ton Martin is a current investment and

Italian motorcycle brand Ducati was one of its prior holdings.

The Morgan family will retain a minority

share and will remain engaged as “stewards for the brand.” For the first

time in the company‟s history, the man-

agement team and employees will be granted a share of the business. Invest-

Industrial has expressed a willingness to

invest in the brand to drive product development and global distribution.
