Introduction to what has gone on since September Wow, 2011 is over and gone; where did the year go? We are already halfway through the 2011-2012 club year and we have seen and accomplished a lot of exciting activities. Since our last newsletter we had a tour of the Galapagos Islands presented by Jan Boyarzin, a demonstration of how to mix media using stills and videos by Rick Price; How to use Textures by Shannon Carson and she provided to our web page the following links which you will find useful when trying to perform some of the tricks she showed us.

Club outings have included painting by light at the Red Deer Cemetery under the guidance of Rick Price and Larry Hildebrandt, Use of lighting in Portrait Photography by Rick Price and Dean Watkiss. There were the usual monthly photo competitions followed by the climax of our fall season of the 189 photographic entries into our Winter Club Photographic Competition. Congratulations to all who entered, you managed to make the judges work very hard as the quality of all of the entries were fantastic. The time taken to judge all of these fantastic entries resulted in us running well past our allotted room rental time at the Dawe Centre. On the next day, following the judging, we opened up the photo entries for viewing by the public at the Dawe Centre. For our first club showing, we had a significant number of the public and club members come and view the spectacular collection of photographs. The fall season was finished off by the CAPS Christmas dinner and the presentation of the winning photos and the individuals who took them. Congratulations to all the winners. For a list of our events and activities check above and also keep updated for new events and activities as we add them onto our web page at http://www.centralalbertaphotographicsociety.com/resources. Trip to the Galapagos Islands by Jan Boyarzin If a trip to the Galapagos Islands is on your 'bucket list', don't wait too long! I was very fortunate to be able to travel to Ecuador in

May of 2011 with some friends on a tour. The islands are a World Heritage Site and travel is restricted by the National Park. The majority of the islands are off-limit without a guide and group sizes are generally kept to no more than 16 people. During the week-long tour, we had

the opportunity to visit two islands per day with a small yacht.

This place is a photographer's paradise not only because of the unspoiled, fabulous scenery but the abundance of incredibly tame animals. Amazing shots were around every corner! Iguanas, sea lions and birds of all types were plentiful. Among the highlights of the trip: seeing a pair of Waved Albatrosses doing their mating dance, getting near to a male Magnificent Frigate with its throat pouch inflated, being so close to a baby sea lion you could hear it nursing its mom, and watching a pair of penguins on land move to the water's edge, escaping with a jump and a splash. For the trip I brought my favorite camera - a Panasonic DMC ZS10. It's a compact superzoom with an impressive 24mm - 384mm range. The pocket size and light weight of this camera works for me and it has a lot of modes to play with including a decent macro setting. With its 14.1 MP, I've been able to make prints as large as 11x14 inches. I also purchased a Panasonic DMC TS3 for this trip because of the daily snorkeling opportunities on the islands. I

experienced some lens fogging with the TS3 even though I tried to be very careful not to get debris around the seal. Much of our snorkeling was just off-shore and a fair amount of sand was churned up by the ocean waves making good photos difficult. The Galapagos Islands are amazing, unique, incredible and relatively untouched by humans. If you are planning to go 'someday', keep in mind that these islands may get more difficult to visit in the future as the government of Ecuador continues to regulate tourism in order to safeguard this fragile ecosystem. The December 16th 2011 Winter Photographic Competition Results We had a relatively warm evening for the Awards and Christmas Banquet night. About a third of our club members attended the Banquet and the announcing of the winners of the numerous categories of our winter competition. Competitors were divided into Novice, Intermediate and Advanced, except for the Doug Corrigan Award and the President’s Choice where all competitors were placed into one category. Our President chose for the President’s choice category, “My Favorite Place”. The other categories were Black and White, Colour, Digital Manipulation and competitors were allowed to enter two photographs in each of these three categories. The subject for The Doug Corrigan Award was Nature. All of the photograph entries were placed on display around the banquet hall allowing club members to walk around and view all of the entries before diner. Scotty Roxburgh kindly cooked two turkeys and a ham for the banquet and attending members brought along their own pot luck specialties filling up the banquet table with a fine array of food. Together we all had a wonderful meal along with good company. Due to the small turn out we only needed one turkey and so the second cooked turkey was raffled off. Scotty played the role of auctioneer and the lucky couple took home a fully cooked, ready to eat turkey saving them the work of cooking their own for Christmas. Our President Harvey Brinks with the assistance of the competition coordinator Daniel Pelissier handed out the awards after diner. Photos of the award winners were taken by Larry Hildebrandt and Scotty Roxburgh. If you don’t see your photo by your name under the winners, it was because you were either not there to receive your award, or our photograph of you and your winning photo did not turn out. Again congratulations to all the winners and to all of our entrants thank you for making it an exciting competition with wonderful photographs. Thanks also go out to McBain Cameras who supplied the door prizes.

If I have placed individuals in the wrong place or category, please accept my apologies, but I think I got everyone in the right place. Dawn Traverse, you had three winning mountain shots and I think I have them in the right spots.

Thanks have to go out to Daniel Pelissier and Sandra Buck for organizing the December Competition. I am sure that they did not realize the amount of work that they were to undertake; the receiving and recording of 189 entries, sorting them all out into various categories and levels and then entering all the names onto a spread sheet to record the judge’s marks. Several individuals came out on the judging night to help set up the room and take down and again on the evening that we held the public display. Thanks to those who assisted; without your help Daniel and Sandra would have been totally swamped. Also, we cannot forget the hard work of the judges, 1. Hank Broomfield, McBain Cameras 2. Janice Williams 3, Larry Hildebrandt. I certainly would not have wished to undertake the judging. Your excellent photos made it very difficult for them. Three of our members received notice of interest to buy their photos.

Past Organized Club Events. Red Deer Grave Yard

This event was well attended and everyone had a lot of fun despite the cool weather. Rick Price and Larry Hilldebrandt showed the participants how to use a variety of flash techniques and the best exposures to utilize in the night setting. Here are a couple of photos provided to me by Subash Alimchandani and Rick Price of the evening.

Larry Hildebrant kindly provided the club with the use of an empty Simms Furniture Warehouse for the photo shoot. There were a large number of club members who turned out for this very interesting evening. We were guided by Rick Price and Dean Watkiss who presented two different approaches to studio photography and the use of lighting on models, Rick with his shoot from the hip approach to photography and placing his subjects away from the backdrop and Dean Watkiss with his precision use of a light meter and placing his subjects close to a backdrop. The two young ladies who modeled for us did an excellent job of providing the right possess. Here are a few samples from Scotty Roxburgh and Rick Price.

Winter Fun Photography Here is a sample of photographs taken during this winter to show you that although it may be cold out there you do not have to hibernate.

This photo was taken by Rick Price December 31st 2011 of

some of the wild horses around Radiant Creek 60 kilometers

out of Rocky Mountain House. He especially likes the

Radiant Creek herd because in the spring and summer they

are fighting with each other virtually all the time. This photo

was taken at 1/400 sec, f/5.6, at 1600 ISO.

This photo was taken by Rick Price at McKenzie Ponds

December 27th. Dean Watkiss who conducted a studio

portrait seminar for the club in November and is a retired

Wildlife Officer told Rick that if the ears go back and the

eyes get really big; don’t just start backing up "RUN "! Well

perhaps what saved me from a charge on this photo was that

I was with another photographer (Jessie who works at

McBaine Camera). The more people there are in a group,

the safer you are from a charge of any of the aggressive big

game animals. The light was within 10 minutes of being too

low for hand held photography. This image was taken at

f/4.8, 1/125sec, 3200 ISO.

This Photo of a Great Horned Owl was taken by Scotty Roxburgh December 29

th at Henner’s Pond near the

Canadian University College. The sun had just gone below the horizon making the light tough to shoot in, especially as the woods deflected most of the residual dusk light. The photo was taken in flash mode using the pop up on the Canon Camera, with ISO 800 f5.6, 1/200 sec at 230 mm. The subject was about fifty feet up the tree and despite the distance the flash was able to provide enough light to highlight the bird. The eyes have been manipulated in Photo shop to get rid of the reflection of the flash.

Parkland Nurseries had a display of ice sculptures which I would bet are fast melting by now. These two photos were taken by Scotty Roxburgh on December 19

th using a flash with f8, 1/4sec and 1/6sec respectively with ISO 200

The Mountain Sheep rut is mostly in November; however Rick Price occasionally sees sheep butting heads at almost any time of the year. These photos were taken at Windy Point on Abraham Lake this December 4th. They were trying to ram heads and missed. Scotty (our editor and chief), Archie (the Rocky Mountain fire chief) and Rick had a blast following the herd around waiting for them to fight. You’ve have to follow multiple targets around, and be super-fast to catch them hitting heads. There is usually little or no warning and it can be a 1/2 hour between hits. Its great fun in the cold and howling wind, I’d recommend it to any photographer. The photograph on the left was taken at f/5.6, 1/800sec, 280 mm at ISO 2200.

The sun was just coming over the horizon and these

horses started to run at a gallop through the open flats

by Radiant Creek. This shot was taken with a Nikon

D80: f5.6; 1/500 sec; ISO 200; 280 mm.

Out at Abraham Lake on January 7th

the wind

blew but the lake is still not totally frozen over.

This was taken with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-

ZS8: F4.1; 1/125 sec; ISO 100; 9 mm.

For Sale...

Canon Ultrasonic Lens EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Excellent condition $200.00

Canon Battery Grip BG-E5 accepts two Canon LP-E5 Battery Packs or six AA batteries

in the included holder. Two LP-E5s yield twice the number of shots as one before a

charging is needed. It is a great accessory for the Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D and

Canon EOS Rebel XS / 1000D DSLR cameras. It allows you to shoot from a more

comfortable and more stable position and gives you more control over larger lenses. The

BG-E5 makes the grip on these cameras nicer to use, especially for long sessions in

vertical orientation. A second battery is not required - it works fine with a single LP-E5.

This is brand new, never used. Price on Amazon.com is $199.00. Asking $100.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi with 18-55 IS Kit. Excellent condition Paid $921.14.

Asking $450.00
