The Newsletter of St John the Evangelist, Ashton Hayes January 2019 A View from the Vicarage New Year should be a /me of expecta/on and hope. We are over half- way through the winter months, the days are ge?ng longer, and twelve months of new opportuni/es and possibili/es lie before us. Here at the Vicarage, Helen and myself await with an/cipa/on the arrival of our third child, due in early February. 2019 promises to be nothing if not busy! St John’s also looks forward to an exci/ng year of change ahead, all designed to make both our Sunday worship and our building more welcoming and accessible to all. We’re delighted that from 13th January onwards our children’s Sunday Club will now be running three /mes a month. Children will join us in church for the start of our 10.30am service, before heading over to the Village Hall for age-appropriate Bible- teaching, games and craPs. They will re-join their family in church before the end of the service, to share what they have been learning. From February, we will also be making a small change to our 10.30am Sunday service paRern, with an extra Morning Worship service replacing Holy Communion on the second Sunday of the month. Our 9am service paRern will remain unchanged. Funding permi?ng, we also hope to begin re-ordering the interior of St John’s this year, making it a more comfortable and flexible space for both Chris/an ministry and wider community use. We have now secured over two-thirds of the amount we need to start work, and are pursuing further grants and dona/ons to allow work to commence. God willing, exci/ng /mes are ahead! Happy New Year, Phil Visit of the Bishop of Chester We look forward to welcoming the Bishop of Chester, Rt. Rev. Peter Forster, to St. John’s for a special service on Sunday 13 th January at 10.30am. Bishop Peter will con/nue our current sermon series in Luke’s Gospel, preaching on “the bap/sm of Jesus” (Lk 3:15-22) and will also preside at Holy Communion. APer over two decades as Bishop of Chester, Peter has recently announced his inten/on to re/re in March 2020, so this may well be his last visit to Ashton Hayes. Please join with us to wish him a fond farewell! (Please note there will not be our normal 9am communion service that day). Toy Service and Food Bank Many thanks to everyone who contributed to our annual Toy Service at the start of December. A huge volume of Christmas giPs and chocolate boxes were donated, and have been passed to “Save the Family” who have wriRen to thank us. The giPs will be distributed to the children of the disadvantaged families in their care. We also have a new West Cheshire Foodbank collec/on box at the rear of church, and welcome food dona/ons throughout the year to support local people on low income. NEWS FROM THE PEWS St John’s: A place of worship where all are welcome Congratulations Arthur Benjamin Lee-Ellams, the son of Rebecca and Dene, was bap/sed at St John’s on 2nd December. Our best wishes to Arthur and his family as he begins his Chris/an journey. In Memory Sadly, we report the deaths of two of our community members this month. The funeral of Megan Sheppard, of Brookside, was held at Chester Cremator- ium on Friday, 14th December and Malcolm Brown was also laid to rest in our churchyard following a funeral in church on Friday, 21st December: Malcolm was well known and loved by many in Ashton Hayes. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joan and her family, and to the family of Megan, at this sad /me.
