Holy Week and Easter Spring is in the air, and the Great Fifty Days of Easter are almost here. But not

yet. First there is Holy Week. Holy Week and its culmination in Easter Day make

up the most important time in the church year. We will begin our observances on

April 9. We will gather, weather permitting, at the altar in the courtyard for the

Liturgy of the Palms. We will then process to the nave together while singing

“Hosanna” as the crowd did when our Lord entered Jerusalem for that final week.

But then we will pause at the door to the nave. Here the mood changes. In addition

to being Palm Sunday, it is also Passion Sunday. The gospel reading will be the

Crucifixion according to Matthew. This sets the tone for the rest of the week until

the Great Vigil.

The next opportunity for us to gather in Holy Week is on Spy Wednesday. It

is called Spy Wednesday because Scripture tells us that on this day Judas made his

bargain to betray Christ. We will be observing The Way of the Cross on that day

beginning at 5:30. We will move about the nave, stopping at various stations to

contemplate Jesus' final journey to Golgotha.

On Thursday we will have our Maundy Thursday service beginning at 5:30.

As part of this service we will have the washing of feet. This can be a very moving

and touching service, and I encourage you to participate in it if at all possible. We

will have a nursery, and, what with the time change and all, it will still be daylight

when we get through.

At noon Friday we will have the Good Friday service. This is actually a

continuation of the Maundy Thursday service. Together with the Great Vigil of

Easter, they constitute the Tridium of Easter.

The Great Vigil of Easter. This is absolutely my favorite service. We will

once again gather in the courtyard, this time at sunset, 7:30. We begin with the

Service of Light. We will kindle new fire and light the Pascal candle from it. We

will then process into the darkened church, lit only by the Light of Christ. As the

Exultet is sung, the light will spread through the nave as we light our individual

candles. We then have the Service of Lessons. There are nine lessons that may be

read, but we will stick just to two. We then move into the Service of Christian

Initiation (Baptism). This year we are planning on baptizing four persons at this

service, two babies, a child, and an adult. Baptism by candlelight is about the most

beautiful thing that happens in a church, and I know you will want to be there.

After the baptism, we turn up the lights, ring bells, and welcome in Easter. The

service continues with a very brief sermon and then the First Communion of

Easter. After the Great Vigil service, we will have a party in the parish hall to

celebrate the end of Lent and the beginning of the Great Fifty Days of Easter.

(Continued from Page 1) Feast of the Resurrection. Any

acolyte who wishes will take part in the procession.

Last year we had eight or nine participating. All

acolytes will have a role in the procession. During the

sequence hymn, we will have the flowering of the cross

followed by the Resurrection gospel reading from John.

We will have a baptism at this service also. (Five

baptisms in one weekend. How exciting!) After this

service we will have our traditional Easter egg hunt on

the front lawn. All in all, there is much that will be

going on this month at St. James'. I encourage you to

take part in as much of it all as you can. I assure you, it

will be worth the effort.

Peace,

Fr. Brandt+

Good Friday Offering Each year our plate offering on Good Friday goes to the domestic and Foreign Missionary Society. The Episcopal Church has been in partnership with the Diocese of Jerusalem for a very long time. Since 1922 the Good Friday offering we collect helps the ministries of healing, feeding and teaching among the dioceses of the Province. While there is not an “offertory” on Good Friday there will be a plate in the aisle for your donations. Please give generously for this worthy cause.

Saturday, April 15 at 9:30 AM we will be putting all the Easter Lilies in the church for Easter Vigil that night. The more help we have the faster it will be done. Please come help make the church beautiful for Easter.

13th Annual Cotton Classic

The 13th Annual Cotton Classic Road Race is

scheduled for Saturday, May 6, at the

Washington County Courthouse. The race

includes: Race Purse, t-shirts and finisher's

medals for all participants, and great post event

entertainment and food. Proceeds from the race

benefit the YMCA Partnership Campaign, a

program that provides financial assistance for

YMCA membership and programs for needy

families. Deadline to enter is April 21.

The YMCA encourages churches to get up a

team to walk. Check the hall bulletin board for

Foster Care Outreach Update We have a name! After much thought and discussion, the foster care outreach ministry at St. James Episcopal Church has been officially named Annis' Children. We chose this name out of respect and remembrance for Annis Walcott, a beloved parishioner of St. James. We are excited to remember her in this way and look forward to the many good things to come!

March was social worker appreciation month. In keeping with our plan to show monthly appreciation for the social workers, Leigh Harris and Katie Elliot delivered lunch to the DHS office on March 20th. We hope to have a photo to share soon!

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. The color associated with this is teal blue. In order to promote awareness, Annis' Children plans to tie teal blue ribbons in a tree in front of the church. We plan to invite Barbara Wright and other social workers from the DHS office to attend church and then tie these ribbons after the 10:30 service on Sunday, April 2nd. All parishioners are invited to stay after church to help; let's work together to create this beautiful installation!

During the week of April 3-7, Annis' Children will work in collaboration with St. James Day School to tie teal blue ribbons in a tree close to the school entrance. The children will help with this installation during school hours. The specific date and time as yet to be announced.

The next meeting for Annis' Children will be April 17, 2017 at 5:30 pm. All are invited to attend and get involved! You can call or email Emily Pieralisi with questions. 822-2907 or [email protected]
