Life offers us an unending continuum of last laps: work projects we need to complete, academic accomplishments, family goals, and life ambitions. Each day, week, month, and year is in itself a potential place for closure with success. What major life ambitions, challenges, or projects do you hope to accomplish in 2019? One such ambition I share with you is that we make a successful transitional between pastors. A related hope is for Lin and me to get off to a good start as missionaries of the church, serving the Church worldwide through Scripture Awakening. For such goals, Paul offers invaluable advice. Linking his life with a race, he writes: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14). Note three key insights: 1. Forgetting what is behind. We cannot run well if we are always looking back. We must not live by the common mantra often heard in churches: “We haven’t done it that way before.” The transition period is a time to evaluate who we are and who God wants us to become. 2. Straining toward what is ahead. The image here is of a runner pressing across the finish line, his chest extended, his head stretched forward, and every muscle and sinew straining toward a goal. It is not enough to put the past behind. We must also focus well on the new insights and ambitions God places in our hearts. But how do we know that our ambitions are God’s ambitions? Paul’s third point provides the answer. 3. To win the prize for which God has called me heavenward. Paul was not interested in praise from others. He looked for rewards from the Lord. He was so committed to living for God that all the demons of hell could not stop him. People would attempt to kill him, but no one could reshape his inner drive. Simply stated, a person or church that is completely dedicated to God can trust in God’s continual guidance. Each final lap we face in life should be an “all-in” for the Lord experience (1 Corinthians 9:24). Let us then face this transition period like athletes running for the goal, knowing that each finish is a new beginning.

My name is Tom Pitman, and I’mgoing to be your transitional pastor forthe next year or so. I’m lookingforward to meeting you and all thatGod has planned! I’ve been asked toshare some things about myself, myministry and my family. To start—Mydesire is to seek God and give Himmy life; I want to always be willing towalk with Him when the road is easyand when it is difficult. I want to be apart of what He is doing. I want to beused by God to help people getsaved, love Him deeply, and equip them to respond to Him.I have learned a few important things about the ways of God. He reallydoes value mercy over judgment. He loves the humble and humiliatesthose filled with pride. God is more concerned with faithfulness thansuccess. He wants us to have ears to hear what He is saying. I believethe most important words we can hear Him say are, “I love you.”I grew up in Saratoga, California, (Bay Area of San Francisco) in aChristian family. I was called into pastoral ministry while I was in college, and I earned a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary inPasadena, California. I completely enjoy studying Scripture and Churchhistory as well as preaching and teaching the things I believe God leadsme to share. I have served as a pastor for 26 years from California toAlabama to Ohio, and I’ve been in Anderson, South Carolina, the pastseven years. Currently, I serve as the Ministerial Chair for our presbyteryand as a transitional pastor. My wife, Diana, and I have been married 29 years. Diana also graduatedfrom Fuller Seminary and earned a Master of Cross Cultural Studies.

Diana has served as a social worker, asociology instructor at a community college, and as an adoption counselor. We like toserve together in counseling and small groupministries. She enjoys serving with ministryteams, women’s ministries, and encouragingpeople in their spiritual gifts. Currently, Dianaserves on the Women’s Council for ourpresbytery. We have two adult kids—Andrew is 24 yearsold and is a graduate student studyingtheoretical math at Clemson University. Annais 21 years old. She just graduated fromClemson and is on her way to start medicalschool this fall. We are grateful that both loveJesus and people.I have a shepherd’s heart and I enjoy beingwith people. I find that God uses me to share

His love through a variety of waysinvolving connections and relation-ships with people from variousbackgrounds and generations.Jesus has led me to experienceHis power through spiritual gifts.I’ve seen God heal many peoplefrom headaches to cancer andlearned how to minister to thosewho are not healed. He has taughtme to pay attention to him fromleading worship services to shar-ing His love with people. As we begin 2019, I am excited Ihave the opportunity to develop acloser relationship with Bill, to getto know you all, and to be a part ofwhat God is doing with this churchfamily. —Tom

Meet DeaconRoy Hathaway

I was raised in a Christian home and attended church regularly from Nursery through

Sunday School. During the Sunday School yearsI became an avid reader of the Bible and was very

interested in Jesus’ healings and very fond of the way he treated people.I went to a high school named Brooklyn Technical HS which required acity wide competitive entrance exam and commuted 1½ hours each wayby bus and subway. I was a Boy Scout and a member of the Boy Scoutband of 80 members. We were in many New York City parades, but Iwas always on a side street and never saw an entire parade.During my high school years I was involved in an explosion at homewhich resulted in 4 weeks in the Hospital burn center and two skingraphs that did not take. During this time I read my Bible daily, especiallyfocusing on Jesus’ healings as my way to end this ordeal. Near the endof my hospital stay, they asked my mother to take me home to heal asthey had done everything they could. At this juncture, I was happy toknow that I could now rely totally on the Bible and Jesus’ works. Thehealing process took about 3 weeks, and at that time I accepted JesusChrist as my Lord and Savior. I was 15 years old at the time. After finishing High School, I went away to the Rensselaer PolytechnicalInstitute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y. And obtained a degree in Electrical Engineer-ing. During college, I was active in the Chorus, Sailing Team, and theRPI Players.I have been married 64 years and have 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and3 Great Grandchildren. During the child bearing years, my wife and Iboth taught Sunday School for 10 years, she taking the entry classesand I having the 16 year olds. I also served at various times as ChurchTreasurer, Property Chairman, Board Chairman each one for 3 years.I moved to Hendersonville 1 ½ years ago and immediately joined theChoir. Since then I have been active on 6 Committes.I am so happy to have joined this loving church and am looking forwardto serving as a Deacon for the coming three years.

2018 HPC Bell Ringers for The Salvation Army

For the fourth year in a row HPC volunteers rang bells for TheSalvation Army to support their Red Kettle fund raiser ministry. This year we switched ringing locations from The Fresh Market tothe Wal-Mart Food Entrance door. The location move provedrewarding with donations totaling $501.39, a new high for HPC bellringing efforts! (Our first location choice for ringing had been thenew Publix store which was denied due to Publix Corporate policy.HPC bell ringers rang from 10AM to 8PM and included John andMarjorie Cooper (2 hours!), Bill and Sherri Jones, Jane Waddell,Elaine Udstuen, Marilyn Frenier, Brenda Bradshaw, Becky and ClayHaskins – and Beau, their Big Dog, Eva and Dick House, TanyaJones, and Jeanie and Ed Joran. Thanks HPC Bell Ringers for exemplifying two of The SalvationArmy’s slogans – “Christianity with its sleeves rolled up” and “Doingthe Most Good.” Donations from our bell ringing effort supports thelocal Salvation Army ministries that help thousands of recipientsfrom Henderson, Polk and Transylvania counties receive food, clothing, energy and rent assistance, the Army’s Angel TreeChristmas participation, and many other assistance programs.

STEWARDSHIP“Again, [the kingdom of heaven]will be like a man going on a jour-ney, who called his servants andentrusted his wealth to them.” — Matthew 25:14“Come and share your master’shappiness!” That is what the mas-ter says to the two servants whomanaged their talents well.In this parable the master notonly says “Well done,” but healso adds a reward, an invitation:“Come and share your master’shappiness!”That’s quite the invitation for amaster to extend to a servant! The servant is not likely even toexpect praise for a job well done;after all it is his duty to serve tothe best of his ability. But to alsobe welcomed in to share in hismaster’s happiness—that is un-heard of!Yet that’s the way it is for us. OurLord and Master expects us tolive faithfully and loyally asstewards of the resources andtalents he has provided us. But,even more, he also gives us theability to do these things. Haveyou ever made a meal for some-one who needed support? Orhave you visited a person con-fined to their home? Or have youhoused someone who needed aplace to sleep? That was thework of the Spirit of God in you, showing others his love.God even gives us a feeling ofwell-being when we do some-thing good for someone. Howawesome that he still shows uswe have done well and that heinvites us to share in his happi-ness now and forever.Share God’s love with a neighbortoday, and share in God’s bless-ing and happiness!PrayerLord, thank you for your love, and guide us to share it freely. In Jesus, AmenFrom Devotions by Dale Melenbergon the website:today.reframemedia.com/authors/dale-melenberg

MISSIONARY CARE COMMITTEEDavid Demirgian Update

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth hasbeen given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizingthem in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, andteaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I amwith you always, to the very end of the age.”

-Matthew 28:18-20 - NIV

By early December it was begin-ning to look alot like Christ-mas aboardthe LogosHope. Thecrew decor-ated thedecks withChristmascheer. Davidhas a myriadof holiday activities in which he canparticipate, ranging from movienights, caroling, a solitude andprayer day (optional fasting), tablegames night, as well as theChristmas Eve dinner and service. The ship will close to the public onChristmas Day, and then beginningWednesday, December 26, thecrew will work to prepare the shipfor travel to the next port. OnDecember 27 they will cast off toAntofagasta, Chile. They are due toarrive there January 3. David andthe crew will spend New Years’sailing! For this journey, they willbypass Peru ports altogether.David has worked on several majorwelding projects. In Costa Rica, heand other ship’s welders workedthrough the night to repair a waterfiltration system. Another projectinvolved challenging weld-ingfabrication. In a 3-day project Davidreplaced a ‘life ring’, a rope pulledthrough a pulley to release a cablethat lowers the life boat. He had toremount the metal ring whilestanding atop a ladder and strad-dling the ship’s railing – all of thiswhile a stiff wind was blowing! (Seephoto above.)He joins in on ministry opportunitiesas his schedule allows. He hasgone on three construction pro-jects, a trip to see the Jim ElliottMuseum and numerous “To TheStreets” outings to share Christ’slove in the surrounding port city.David asks us to pray for God togive him welding skill. Pray for theLord to stir hearts and open thedoors for the Logos Hope teams toshare the hope, help, and love ofJesus Christ.

It was a wonderful experience to meet Dr.Denvthuama when he visited our church inOctober. He is a humble warrior for thePresbyterian Church in Myanmar. When weheard of his schedule during his stay, thatidea was confirmed. He had been preachingat his daughter Mahlimi’s Mizo church inIndianapolis and plans to visit many Mizocongregations while he is in the US.He has labored in Myanmar for many yearsbuilding up the church even when there wasgreat suppression of Christians. That sup-pression began in 1962 when the Socialiststook over and cut the country off from theworld. All private institutions were nationalized and the country went froma rich “Rice Bowl” to “the Least Developed Country.” The strict control ofmoney made it difficult to get funds to him. for several years, we had tobe very careful about exposing his location in any of our Church’spublicaitons. During that time he joined Tahan Theological College andserved as a teacher, advisor, and eventually as President. Tahan Theo-logical College began in 1978 with seven students and now has around150. It is also the leading source of Presbyterian pastors. During thoseyears he began writing books to expand the understanding of Presbyteri-ans about their denomination and their Lord. He was allowed to travelduring the oppression because he was the General Secretary of theAssembly of Myanmar’s Presbyterian Church. We have been honoredby Dr. Dengthuama because he often uses a picture of our church in thebooks he writes. Now that the country allows more freedom of worship, he continues towrite study books for the Bible and he travels by motorcycle to manychurches to present these Bible studies as well as training to the Elders, teachers and lay leaders. The challenge to the Christians in Myanmar isto be effective in a Pro-Buddhist culture where active discrimination ispracticed. They are living in the second largest country in SoutheastAsia, yet they represent only 4% of the population, along with 4% Mus-lim, and 1% Amimists. All the rest are Buddhists. This visit by Dr. Dengthuama exemplifies the changes in Myanmar, because he is allowed to leave the country for three months to visit adaughter who left the country. The daughter, a Christian, is a part of thelargest group to be given asylum here from Myanmar.

Announcing a new Sunday School class to begin January 13

The Christian Education Ministry has announced a new Sunday Schoolclass, called “Digging Deeper, Hearing his Vlice,” which will begin onJanuary 13, 2019. Those not currently involved with a Sunday Schoolclass are encouraged to consider attending. The class will meet inFellowship Hall and will begin with a study of the life of David.Bill Jones will be teaching the new class. It will not be a lightweightstudy, but rather an in-depth character study on the life of David, whichcould challenge you in ways you may not expect.God calls David “a man after His own heart.” In this class we will dis-cover how a heart for God will result in positive changes in almost everyaspect of our lives and particularly in our relationship with God. It will even change our perspective on successand failure and, to be sure, David had his share of both.We will take as long as we need to study this amazing man of God, but we anticipate it taking upto a year to work our way through the Scriptures about this man after God’s own heart.

Come, join with your brothers and sisters in prayer. This isa non-structured, very casual, time to sit before the Lord.Community prayer starts at noon and lasts about one hour.Come as you can and leave whenever—even if you canonly stay for a few minutes.
