JULY
2018
Words of Hope by Rev. Meg Wilson
An amusing story has been recently circulating on Facebook. A beautiful golden-colored dog arrived
in a lady’s garden, wagging his tail. He made his way into the house, found somewhere comfortable,
curled up and went to sleep. After an hour or so, he got up, stretched and left the house, but he
returned again the next day and on a number of days after that. Eventually curiosity got the better
of the house owner and she attached a note to the dog’s collar – “I’m curious about the owner of
this delightful dog who comes to take an hour’s rest in my house so
regularly.” The next day the dog arrived with a reply attached to his
collar: “He lives in a house with 6 children, 2 of them under 3 years old.
Tomorrow I’m coming with him!”
That dog knew the wisdom of taking a break from life’s hectic whirl. God
created the universe, and we are told that the Creator then rested.
Sabbath laws gave those who were slaves, those that were impoverished,
even the animals, a day to attempt to rejuvenate. It was a day to focus on loving God, loving others
and love of one’s self.
We do not honor the Lord when we work non-stop and never take time to bring our chaotic life to a
stop. Parents can provide their children a powerful lesson by teaching them to unplug for periods of
time. Adults can learn that saying “No”, on occasion, will allow them to more fully say, “Yes” when
the time is right. Every one of us needs to take regular time out to recharge our batteries and to
refocus. A day’s rest or a few days of vacation enables us to re-engage with our responsibilities,
refreshed and re-invigorated. As we enter these months of summer, create some time to
experience the Sabbath. When we support each other, making it possible for each other to take
some time off, we will find that God’s people will actually be better served. So this summer, I
encourage all of us to make sure that we create some intentional time of Sabbath and to volunteer
to allow others to take some much needed rest from their responsibilities.
The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14
Prayer: God of Life, please forgive me for not always honoring the importance of keeping Sabbath.
Encourage me to reorganize my life, so that I might find the way to take proper rest and
refreshment in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Blessings, Pastor Meg

HOPE CHURCH NEWS
DID YOU KNOW?
The annual cost for Gas & Electricity for
Hope UCC is $19,500. That breaks down
to over $50 per day. While that number
may surprise you, it’s a reality. Only through your dona-
tions, combined with those of others who care for our
church, can we keep the lights on and the building warm in
winter and cool in summer. The Gas and Electric bills are
just two examples of the expenses that are incurred month
in and month out, whether you attend worship on Sunday or
not. Please be generous in your giving. Thank you for your
continued support.
Norm Nenninger
Treasurer
THANK YOU!
We would like to thank our
hope church family for
showing Welda love, care, and concern; she
loved all of you! A special thank you to the
Hills and Lubecks for bringing Mom to
church for the last few years. She lived for
her church which kept her going. Also a spe-
cial thanks to Pastor Meg for her tender com-
passion, love, and helping the family deal
with mom’s passing.
Thank you,
Tim and Nancy Cole
SERVICE TIMES CHANGE
The BOT’s voted that for the
summer months we will join to-
gether for one combined wor-
ship service instead of two. Worship will be at
9:30 am from Memorial Day 5/27 thru Labor Day
9/2. We will meet in the middle and worship God!
Coffee Hour will follow the 9:30 service.
THANK YOU, THANK
YOU,THANK YOU!!
I would like to thank all of
the members who helped with Pastor Meg's
Installation on June 24th: Barry, Burnham,
Cindy Johnson, Donna Canu, Daisy Katz, Sue
Grimshaw, Nancy Fay, Amy Schinning, Eleanor
Gurich, Jane White, Opal Lulek, Janet Dolland,
Janet Brown, Shirley Kirby, Brad Lusk, Lori
Sarnowski, Lisa Mackey, and Rick and Judy
Cole.
Whether you baked goodies for the Dessert
table, greeted our guests, entertained waiting
clergy or helped with the set up or clean up,
many hands make light work, and I truly appre-
ciate each and every one of you.
I had many people ask where we got the Water
Lily Cake. Mrs. Maddox Cake Shoppe in Farm-
ington Hills (Orchard Lake and 10 Mile Rd.)
made this beautiful cake. Our family has used
this bakery for many, many years and her
cakes have always made our dessert tables
special.
Blessings to each of you.
Nancy Burnham
IT’S OFFICIAL!!
Thank you to all who partici-
pated in making my Installa-
tion as your pastor such a wonderful celebra-
tion!
The little details made it very special. Thank
you for the cards and gifts and even more for
all your support and prayers. Hope Church is on
an exciting mission as together we seek to
serve God’s people both within our walls and out
in the world. It is my honor to be your spiritual
leader for this journey!
May God continue to bless our ministry.
Blessings, Pastor Meg

HOPE CHURCH NEWS (cont.)
JIMMY JOHN’S NEXT
MONTH
There is an event being planned
at Jimmy John’s field in August.
Look for more information in up-
coming bulletins and the August newsletter.
JOIN THE BELL CHOIR!!
We need more ding-a-lings!
Come join the bell choir. Learn
a new skill in a friendly welcom-
ing environment. You don’t have
to know how to read music. You do, however,
need to be able to count to 4 (or 3, or sometimes
6). And, if you only want to ring one bell, we can
handle that also. We have 2 octaves of bells, and
three octaves of chimes, so there are plenty of
opportunities to ring. Please contact Denise Kil-
dea or the church office. Also, watch the calen-
dar for the start of fall rehearsals.
WHERE OH WHERE HAVE OUR
WHEELCHAIRS GONE?
We are looking for three full-size
wheelchairs. One had Lyle Anderson’s
name painted on it; the other two may
have been unmarked. These items were donated to
the church for the benefit of those that need assis-
tance from time to time.
If you know the whereabouts of these wheelchairs or
if you have borrowed one of them, please contact the
church office, so we know who has them.
Thank you.
CALLING ALL CORNED BEEF
LOVERS!!!
Ken Hess is looking for a team of volunteers
to work on a Corned Beef Dinner to be served
in October. We know, Corned Beef is usually
a St. Patrick’s Day fare. However, Ken would
like to use the October event as a teaching
event, so while he is in Florida for the winter
months, Hope Church can still celebrate in
March with the Corned Beef and Cabbage
Dinner.
This event was always well attended and now
is our chance to bring it back to our calendar.
Please reach out to Ken.
THANK YOU!
The Roses were beauti-
ful!! I am humbled to
have the opportunity to
direct our talented
choir, and they deserve the lovely bouquet!
They are a dedicated group who have been so
very supportive of the music ministry at Hope,
and have been generous to accept me as their
director. I heartily give each of them a big
thank you. We are always looking for more
singers to join the Choir; we have a place for
you. You are most welcome, and you have the
summer to make your decision. We hope to see
you when practice begins in September. Again,
thank you for the flowers, and on behalf of the
Choir, thank you for your support.

HOPE CHURCH PANTRY
Our Hope Food Pantry is going to
shorten the hours that we are open each
week for clients. Most people come in
the morning and with the new hours of 10:00 to 1:00 p.m.,
starting July 19th, we will only need two volunteers each
week. New volunteers will be partnered with a
knowledgeable, trained, person to insure that procedures work
to our clients’ best advantage. This is an interesting and
worthwhile way to help the church and our neighbors. We
have posted a Pantry Volunteer Sign-Up sheet in Fellowship
Hall for the coming months.
While we did very well with our fundraising event, our list of
clients continues to grow; and we still depend on the
donations from the congregation to keep our pantry shelves
stocked. The Pantry’s urgent needs, this month, are toilet
paper and paper towels. We are always grateful to
everyone who shares their time and resources with this
mission.
CHRISTIAN MISSION AND WITNESS
NATURE AT NIGHT
In a few short weeks, school
will be done for the summer;
that and the warm weather
starts us thinking
“VACATION”. Here is an
idea that will take you to the out of doors in
Michigan. There are six places called Dark Sky
Parks. One of those in Emmett County, just
outside of Mackinaw City, is designated as in-
ternational. What you will find is areas of low-
light pollution and opportunities to gaze at the
Milky Way, shooting stars and meteor showers.
Here is a short list of where the best night
time shows are playing:
1) Headlands International Dark Sky Park,
15675 Headlands Rd., Mackinaw City
2) Lake Hudson Recreation Area, 5505 Morey
Highway, Clayton, MI 49235
3) Negwegon State Park, Ossineke, MI
49766
4) Port Crescent State Park, 1775 Port Aus-
tin Rd., Port Austin, MI
5) Thompson’s Harbor State Park, Posen, MI
49776
6) Wilderness State Park, 903 Wilderness
Park Dr., Carp Lake, MI
P.s. If you should go to a Dark Sky Park, take
a flash light with a red covering over the lens.
This will help keep the harsh light down.

COMMUNITY INTEREST
FIRST FIVE YEARS
This 5-week program
for parents who have
children 5 years and
under includes basic parenting skills with
discipline that really works as well a chap-
ter on preparing for school success. The
cost of the class is a one-time fee of $5
per family that includes a book, childcare,
the Paper People Program for children in
childcare, as well as gas cards for those
parents who complete the series by re-
ceiving a Certificate of Completion at the
last session. Scholarships are available if
needed.
Hope UCC will host CARE’s parenting class
above from Monday, August 20th until
Monday, September 24th (with no class on
Monday, September 3rd). Please see the
flier in FH will more details.
INTERFAITH VOLUNTEER CAREGIVERS,
HAVE CAR, WILL TRAVEL
Hundreds of older and disabled neighbors in
our community need help getting to doctor ap-
pointments, the grocery store, or other essen-
tial errands. Being able to
get food and medical care can
make it possible for them to
remain in their own homes for
as long as possible. The In-
terfaith Volunteer Caregivers
program is in need of volunteers who can pro-
vide business hours – mornings and afternoons.
If you have just a couple hours a month that
you can give to someone in need, you can make
a huge difference in the life of a struggling
neighbor. You tell us what days, times and ar-
eas are convenient for you, and we call you
with specific appointments that meet these
criteria. If you are free, say yes. If you’re
not, simply decline, and we will call you another
time. Even one more ride a year will make a
big difference to the person who needs it!
Please call us today at (586) 757-5551.

LIST
Our congregation knows that
prayer is our tool for connecting
to God. Together, we pray in
worship and we pray at home.
Please check the prayer list in
both the newsletter and the bul-
letin to help us keep our prayer
requests current. You may con-
tact the church office to re-
move or add a name. We also
have a prayer sculpture in the
church lobby and you are wel-
come to write a prayer request
on a heart and hang in on the
sculpture. When we lift our con-
cerns in prayer, we will surely
know the presence of the Lord.
