Dear Glenvale Community,

Firstly, a quick update regarding works across the school.

We are still awaiting the exact timeline regarding the new

building at The Entrance North and we have now been told

that the modules will arrive this week. The timelines for

bathroom rebuilds are going to be sent over the next

fortnight.

Ongoing plumbing issues are a concern at the Narara

campus due to the age of the buildings and infrastructure.

Unlike other schools who have spare rooms, additional

facilities and can move classes and students easily if works

need to occur, we can’t. This means that works can only

happen before or after school or on the weekends, and that

any work needs to be safely finished and the room/s

accessible for when students return. This is an ongoing

challenge and the Department is fully aware of this difficulty

and works sometimes drag out accordingly. I am advocating

constantly to improve our school and get the best facilities

and resources for our students.

On the subject of advocacy, in my roles as President of the

Australian Special Education Principals’ Association and Vice

President of the NSW Special Education Principals

Association, I have had the opportunity to have significant

input to support and highlight the needs of our students

and schools at the state, national and international level.

Last Thursday I was part of a distinguished Q&A panel at the

NSW Primary Principals State Conference. The theme was

“Every student, known, valued and cared for” Reality or

rhetoric?

It was a great opportunity to speak to principals,

Department officials and policy makers about the

inequities that our special schools still face in relation

to facilities, staffing, funding and resourcing. I was

able to speak at length to passionately give voice to

the needs of our students, staff, schools and

communities.

Again, in my national role, I was the head of the

Australian delegation for ASEPA as a member of

the International Confederation of Principals

Council in Shanghai. Along with our national

primary and secondary principal association

presidents I presented the challenges faced by

special schools, students and families in the

Australian context. These activities are funded by

the Commonwealth Department of Education and

ASEPA members and do not use school funds.

With the ability to give voice to our challenges at

state, national and international meetings I am

hopeful that we get the recognition our schools

need.

NSW Principals’ Conference panel

International Confederation of Principals

So from the day to day of plumbing, through

to high level advocacy our schools have a way

of grounding us each and every day.

Regards as always.

From the Transition Desk....

Just before your young person turns 16 remember to apply for the Disability Support Pension (DSP) at Centrelink. You should ask for the 'Educational Supplement' while your child is still attending school too. You should receive more financial support for your household when your young person receives the DSP, which means you will lose Family Tax Benefit (FTB). Centrelink stated- Regarding when a young person claims DSP and parents receiving FTB. If a customer is claiming DSP online, the FTB will cancel automatically. If a customer claims DSP in paper form FTB will not cancel automatically which could incur a debt if DSP is granted. If by any chance the DSP is rejected FTB can be restored back to the cancel date.

Please check your DSP eligibility.

If you require proof of identity from the Department of Education to apply for the Disability

Support Pension just before the student turns 16 years of age please contact the school office.

We will provide a letter and a school identification card.

Voluntary School Contributions

Every public school asks for a small contribution towards the

many costs associated with education programs.

At Glenvale, we ask that parents contribute $35 per child each year.

This has not changed for many years and is very small in compari-

son to other schools, even though our costs can be much higher.

Please consider sending in the $35 as soon as you are able to do so; a payment

can be made via our webpage www.glenvale-s.schools.nsw.edu.au. Go to the

‘Make a Payment’ tab and follow the links.

Many thanks to those who have already done so.

All donations to the school over $2 are tax deductible as Glenvale is registered

with the Australian Tax Office as a deductible gift.

Term 4

Please return permission notes and information re-garding students ASAP.

Year 11 to year 12 transition meetings to be held in late Oct/Nov. Parents/Carers of year 11 students at Narara have been contacted.

Therapy dogs visits commence 5th Nov

Year 12 Parents info session to be held Monday 11th Nov at

1.30pm in the Narara meeting room, all parents/carers of

students leaving Yr 12 at the end of this year are welcome.

School photos have been sent home with the students if you ordered them.

Dates /Things to Remember

Uniforms wanted, size 18 and above—if you have any uniform items that you no longer need

please hand these into the school office. We have sufficient supplies of small sizes but are

desperate for size 18 and above.

Recycling your old mobile phone is a good idea—please drop them in our school

office

Over 90% of the materials in a mobile phone are recovered to make new products including jewellery; plastic

fence posts and stainless steel products. These valuable resources are lost forever if you put your mobile

phone in the garbage bin. At landfill, mobile phone batteries leak toxic materials such as cadmium.
