Shrove Tuesday and Lent Now and Then A Season for Prayer and Purpose During Lent at Binkley, members and friends are encouraged to center in God’s presence through prayer, disciplines of your choosing (fasting from certain foods, activities, etc.) and commitments to service or support for God’s creation. Some people pledge to write a note of support to a different person every week while others gather food to support those who live with hunger every day. The Lenten promises you make are entirely up to you. All of these promises are helpful in connecting us to Jesus the Christ who is our servant leader and redeemer. February 12 is Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving, when the faithful confessed their sins to the local priest and received forgive- ness before the Lenten season began. As far back as 1000 AD, "to shrive" meant to hear confessions. Historically, Shrove Tuesday also marked the beginning of the 40-day Lenten fasting period when the faithful were forbidden by the church to con- sume meat, butter, eggs or milk. However, if a family had a store of these foods they all would go bad by the time the fast ended on Easter Sunday. What to do? Solution: use up the milk, butter and eggs no later than Shrove Tuesday. And so, with the addition of a little flour, the solution quickly presented itself in... pancakes, lots of 'em. In France, (as well as here in the US - or more famously - in New Orleans) it's known as Fat Tuesday which culminates the Mardi Gras festival with boisterous celebrations just before the Lenten season. At Binkley, our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is led by the youth of the church and includes a Talent Show. All ages are encouraged to sign up on Dale’s door for the talent portion of our night together. The cost for the meal (pancakes, waffles, sausage, fresh fruit and beverages) is $6.00 for 6th grade and above and $5.00 for 5th grade and below. Any net proceeds from the meal will support our Baptist Youth Camp scholarships. Our meal begins at 5:15pm and is served until approximately 6:15 pm. The Talent Show will begin by 6:30 pm. Please sign up on Dale’s bulletin board if you have a talent to share. Please join us on February 12 for this night of fellowship through food, fun and frivolity! Shrove Tuesday and Lent – Now and Then –

A Season for Prayer and Purpose

During Lent at Binkley, members and friends are encouraged to center in God’s presence through prayer, disciplines of your choosing (fasting from certain foods, activities, etc.) and commitments to service or support for God’s creation. Some people pledge to write a note of support to a different person every week while others gather food to support those who live with hunger every day. February 13 is Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lent for many Christians. On Ash Wednesday at Binkley we have two types of services where you may worship God and receive ashes on your hand or forehead.

The first opportunity is an intimate gathering for two families at a time scheduled in fifteen minute segments beginning at 5:00 pm. Dale Osborne and Stephanie Ford

lead the children and parents in a time of dialogue, song and prayer as well as an explanation of the ashes. Please sign up on the sheet on Dale’s door or on Tuesday night at the Pancake Supper. This gathering will occur in our beautiful prayer chapel.

The second opportunity for a service of ashes takes place in the sanctuary at 7:30 pm. Peter Carman and the Chancel Choir led by Leandra Strope provide leadership for this worship time. Singing, scripture readings, prayer, special music and the placement of ashes are incorporated into the gathering.

We encourage you to take part in this service which prepares us for the season of Lent.

Join us for supper from 5:30-6:00, and presentation/discussion until 7:00. Child care available.

A NEW SEMESTER FOR ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL CLASSES February 3 - May 12

With thanks for an engaging January term, we turn to our Spring 2013 opportunities for the Church School hour (9:30-10:45am). You’ll have a difficult time choosing among the compelling offerings. To help with your decision, come to our Mini-Launch Sunday, February 3, in the Lounge. There, you’ll enjoy previews of each of the adult Church School classes, along with coffee and light breakfast snacks. Classes will begin the following week, February 10.

ESL BIBLE STUDY Maria Palmer, teacher This class is designed for those learning English as a second language and interested in Bible Study. It focuses on stories from both the Old and New Testaments. Participants learn basic English vocabulary and share from their own cultures and histories about why the stories are important. All are welcome.

LEAVING WELL: CREATING A LEGACY Health and Wellness Committee, facilitating This class focuses on opening up the conversation around our mortality by exploring the experiences, feelings, and values that have shaped us—and then considering the legacy we want to leave for our family and friends in the face of illness or death. We will explore topics such as getting our affairs in order, dying with dignity, communicating with families and friends, caregiving, and facing grief. We’ll talk about how to help children and teens. The class is intended for all adults—since it is vital at any age to think about our eventual death from spiritual and emotional perspectives, as well as create the legacy we will leave. Class will end on April 28.

PAUL: CHAUVINIST, ANTI-SEMITE, THEOLOGIAN? Micheal Palmer, teacher In the Fall we began a class on Paul, looking at who he was, and why it matters. It is not necessary to have attended the Fall class to understand this one. We welcome new participants! For centuries Paul’s letters have been used to inspire profound faith, but also to foster misogyny in the church, to build up community but to tear down tolerance, to inspire deep commitment to God but rationalize horrible injustices. Many have argued that it was Paul who founded the church and is the true progenitor of Christianity. What does it mean that such a difficult-to-understand person stands at the origins of our faith? What role should his letters play in the ongoing life of the Church? Join us for a frank discussion of the most enigmatic figure in early Christianity, and learn with us what Paul means for today’s Church.

IT’S NOT JUST ONE WAY Beth Welton, facilitator Are you a recent member of Binkley, perhaps a prospective member, or member of longer standing who has an interest in learning about the personal faith journeys of our ministerial staff as well as others in our commu-nity? Do you have a desire to feel a deeper personal and spiritual connection with those whom you worship with each Sunday? If so, please join us for a time of both sharing and discussion as we engage and appreciate our many different spiritual paths at Binkley.

PROFILES OF FAITH, COURAGE, AND COMPASSION Collins Kilburn, teacher This class explores the lives and thoughts of three fascinating heroic figures, each edifying examples of moral and spiritual excellence. The roster includes Rosa Parks, behind-the-scenes soldier in the fight for racial equality and “mother” of the civil rights movement, the one whose refusal to move to the back of the bus sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott; Marian Wright Edelman, the anti-hunger advocate who initiated the Poor People’s Campaign in 1968, and later founded the Children’s Defense Fund; and William Slone Coffin, Jr., the prophetic voice and activist from the pulpits of Yale University and Riverside Church, whose leadership in the Anti-Vietnam War Movement and as President of SANE/FREEZE made him especially prominent.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS

There are many dates still available for honoring and remembering a loved one with sanctuary flowers. The sign up board is in the Narthex.

From the Minister’s desk Dear Binkley Friends,

I was moved at a recent gathering by the statements some Binkley members made about why they feel strongly about inviting folk to come and be a part of our life together in this congregation. The gathering was a task force of inter-ested people gathered by Charles Coble to work together on growing the congregation. One member reflected on extraordinary offerings for children and their families. Another spoke of not taking for granted being a member of a church that insisted on racial inclusion from its founding days in the 1950s and for the full inclusion of LGBT people in the years since, an ever widening insistence on full welcome and affirmation. Another spoke of the personal experi-ence of being supported by a church family. And that was just the beginning. The group begun just in the last few months is already starting to feel like a movement! We are discussing issues as wide-ranging as follow-up with visitors to the church, getting to know our immediate neighbors better, outreach to the UNC community—and much more. If you are interested in joining in on efforts to invite and welcome, Charles Coble (or I) would be glad to hear from you! We’ll be back over the months ahead to ask for help on specific tasks—the ones that fit your individual gifts.

In recent months at Binkley Church, we have struggled with hard decisions around whether or not to move forward with an ordination—a process that strained our spirits and caused sharp disagreement. We face financial challenges at the beginning of 2013 that mean we will be looking at difficult budget choices on the first Sunday in February. And we face a host of other challenges as a church. At such a time, I find it refreshing to remember the strengths of this church; the love that binds us; the witness we have long committed to beyond our four walls. And it is encouraging to know that some of you are fired up about inviting others to be part of the ongoing story which is this local church.

What is it that brought you to Binkley church? I came to be part of a community whose values and calling are well re-flected in the little statement crafted a year and a half or so ago. They aren’t easy words, and it is not an easy calling, nor one we succeed at every day. And yet it remains who we are.

Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, re-specting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation.

In Christ’s Peace,

Peter

CONGRATULATIONS We offer warm congratulations to Lillian Lee, who received an award from our local NAACP chapter on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for her years of service and action in the community. The Rebecca Clark Award was given to Mrs. Lee “for Outstanding Service in the Area of Political Activism, Voter Education and Voter Registra-tion.” We are grateful for the many contributions that Lillian Lee and her husband, former Mayor Howard Lee, have long made in working for justice and inclusion, both in the wider community and in their many years of faithful membership here at Binkley.
