If you like fun, games, fellowship, and surprises you won’t want to miss our Bi-Annual Youth All Nighter. Please bring a sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, and an open mind! See you there!

Our youth group picked apples at Dan and Karyl Masters house to help support our church’s community food program. The weather was beautiful and Dan and Karyl were so kind as they made us orange cranberry muffins and homemade apple cider for a little fellowship time in between picking apples! Then we enjoyed an afternoon of fall festivities at Green Bluff!

Dear Friends,

One evening recently I received a phone call from a good friend of many years. We had met for lunch earlier that day…we’d spent time catching up on the past few months. A lot had taken place in our lives since our last good conversation. My friend’s words when he called that evening struck me so…. He said “thanks again for today, our time together was so good for my soul!” Our luncheon conversation hadn’t moved mountains…we’d solved only about half of the world’s problems! We hadn’t even been trying to “fix” one another. It was just a pause in the ever moving flow of life for meaningful connection. It was “community” in the best sense of the word…community that went “soul deep.” It was a gift.

If you’ve been around Methodism any time at all you will have heard or read one of the Wesley questions that was asked around the circle when small groups (called Class Meetings) gathered to nurture their newly found faith. The question was “How is it with your soul?” my friend’s phone call reminded me again how important it is for us to pause and care for our souls.

I visited my Doctor last week…it was a follow up visit monitoring the back pain I live with and around…The visit led to the suggestion of still, another round of physical therapy. I thought as I drove away from the clinic how much time and energy it takes these days just to keep this 73-year-old body of mine on track and functioning at a somewhat acceptable level. The question is “can I ever finally learn that my soul needs that same intention and care?” My friend’s phone call reminds me how important real community is to the care of my soul and of yours. Allow me to share a great quote from the final chapter of the book a few of us read together in our recently concluded Grow Class:

“Journeying with Jesus…means to be in a community, to become part of the alternative community of Jesus. Discipleship is not an individual path, but a journey in a company of disciples. It is the road less traveled…Though that (gathering, breaking bread, sharing at soul depth) is not the only role of the church, it is the primary role.” (Marcus J. Borg; Remembering Jesus Again for the First Time)

Yes, we serve others – we reach out into our community…we present and represent the Gospel to those waiting to hear...to know…But what about the care of our own souls in the midst of all the doing? Do we mostly just go to church…or on a Sunday or another day, does the Church truly gather? Are our Souls being fed—yes by the body and blood of Christ, but also by the in-fleshed Spirit of God we come in contact with when our souls are opened to one another? “How is it, these days, with your soul?” My soul was better after spending an hour and half of “real” time with a dear Christian brother. How is your soul today?

Troop 22 meets on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the church. We always welcome new Scouts and interested parents. Most boys join the troop toward the end of their 5th grade year, though any boy is welcome to join Scouting until his 18th birthday.

We have been quite busy the last several months. The troop went to Camp Easton on Couer d’Alene for a week of summer camp in late July. Summer camp is always one of the highlights of the Scout year. While we were there Scouts worked on rank advancement and earned merit badges such as swimming, small boat sailing, shotgun, environmental science, and first aid. Camp Easton has many waterfront activities: swimming, sailing, scuba, kayaking and many more. Two Scouts earned their BSA Lifeguard certificates and may work at the camp next summer. Sadly, at the end of June we lost a beloved Scoutmaster, Patrick Van Inwegen, after a three-year struggle with bile duct cancer. Patrick, was a professor at Whitworth University and a well-respected leader in the Scouting community. Our new Scoutmaster, Steve Greene, is an experienced leader having served as a Cubmaster for several years. We have a busy fall coming up. In September, we returned to Camp Easton for a weekend to work on a campsite memorial project. The last weekend of October we will be joining many other troops for our Three Rivers District fall camporee. In November, we will be participating in an annual Food Drive. The rank of Eagle Scout is Scouting highest award. A Scout must progress through all the other ranks, earn 21 merit badges, 11 of which are required, serve in a leadership role in the troop and complete an Eagle Service Project. This year we have had two Eagle Scouts, Alex Van Inwegen, Patrick’s son, and Jordan Steinhart. Scouting is a wonderful mixture of outdoor activity, character building, and just plan fun. Parents are welcome at all meetings and often go on campouts and to summer camp. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend more time with your son. You may have heard that girls can now join Scouts. This is true. Though our troop is an all boy troop, there are active troops in the District that include girls. If you have any questions, please contact us or just drop by some Wednesday night.
