I am happy to say that the STOGA membership continues to increase

as we locate more old girls through Facebook and word of mouth

which is wonderful. We now have 1000 old girls as “facebook friends”.

Look up Teresa Effi ngham on Facebook to fi nd us and ask to be a

friend. You will most likely fi nd many old class mates on there and you

will be able to get in touch with them if you wish.

We had a fantastic turnout to the School Reunion in October and

it was wonderful to see so many familiar as well as many new faces.

Sadly Cynthia Snowden (ex maths teacher from the 1970/80’s) who

posted a wonderful video on YouTube of staff and girls in the 1970’s

and was planning to join us did not make it due to illness. Some of

her former pupils below posed for a photograph to send to her along

with their good wishes.

Best Wishes

Jilly Cooper

SPRING COUNTRY WALK – CHILWORTH/ST MARTHA’S 8th March 2016

This was a very enjoyable circular walk with a real variety of scenery and terrain. Ranging from woodlands, open fi elds with magnifi cent views to grapevines and lakes. We walked up the hills, past cows with bells and rested at St Martha’s church before descending to Chilworth and walking along the gunpowder route to the Percy Arms for a welcome lunch.

OLD PALACE GUIDED WALK

This fascinating walk took us through all sorts of delightful nooks and crannies and secret courtyards around St James’s and The Old Palace Quarter of London. We saw the magnifi cent Spencer House overlooking Green Park built for John, The First Earl Spencer and ancestor of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. We visited the secluded courtyard around the back of The Stafford Hotel beautifully lit with fairy lights. The Stafford is where Princess Diana took refuge when news of her impending divorce was leaked. Around the corner is Dukes Hotel of the Martini “shaken not stirred” fame, a catchphrase of Ian Fleming’s James Bond, and the area around St James’s is also home to many gentlemen’s clubs including: The East India Club, on St James’s Square, Boodles: which was reputed to be where Beau Brummel’s last bet took place before he fl ed to France. Brookes – where gambling all night was common and Whites, founded in 1693 – the oldest and most exclusive Gentlemans’ club in the world with current members including Charles, Prince of Wales, and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. David Cameron was a member but resigned over the club’s refusal to admit women. (Margaret Thatcher was made an honorary gentleman). Finally, we saw the In and Out Naval and Military club is in St James’s Square next to the former Libyan Embassy where policewoman Yvonne Fletcher was shot in 1984 during a protest. See the memorial to her, right.

Adriana Marcela Quintero Grijalba 1990 (below & right)

Adriana Marcela married Ignacio Gavilan who is Spanish and from Madrid on 24th September, in Toledo, Spain. They met in Colombia and now live in Paris.

You will probably remember Adriana as Marcela Quintero Grijalba. Her sister, who also attended St T’s, is Johanna Grijalba.

Clare Louise (Bartlett) Campbell Harding 2000My husband, Doug Barrow, and I married in Tithe Barn in Petersfi eld on Friday, 13th May 2016 surrounded by friends and family – including one of my close friends Léonie Collingwood-Johnson, who I met at Grove House Preparatory School and we continued on to St Teresa’s together. My sister, Gemma Bashevoy, was one of my three bridesmaids - she also attended Grove House and St Teresa’s.

My name at school was Clare Bartlett and my sister’s was Gemma Bartlett but, to confuse matters, we both changed our surname to Campbell Harding at 18 and 16 and have now both taken our husbands’ names.

In 2018 it will have been 20 years since I left St Teresa’s and I’d love to get a group together at the reunion! I look forward to hearing details of it on facebook!

BIRTHS & CHRISTENINGS

Marina Miller 1985 (right) My granddaughter Holly Marina Jasmine Gent was born on the 21st Dec weighing in at 6lbs 13ozs and 21.5 in with a full head of black hair. Mum had a rough time but both are now doing well, I have been here most of the time helping look after Holly which I have loved.

This is one very special baby as when my Son was diagnosed with late stage 4 Testicular Cancer aged 16 he was told he would be sterile. When he went for his 10yr check they re tested him just to make sure and found that he is far from that now hence Holly.

So Holly has been an extra incentive for me to carry on with my holistic path re my Stem cell cancer and so far fi ngers crossed I’m stable, re last check up in Nov next check Feb.

Christening at St Teresa’s, March 21st 2016On Sunday 20 March, Rev Deacon Ian Wells, a Governor of the School, Baptised Tedeo George-Federico Wynne, the son of Natalya Montegriffo, an old girl of the School. MEMORIES STOGA 2017

1st May 1947 is a day I have never forgotten nor shall I ever as that is when I became a pupil at St Teresa’s Convent for Young Ladies. How idyllic life seemed then, just two years after the end of war, being driven up Beech Avenue turning left into the School drive and seeing the House and lawns in all their glory. As soon as I stepped onto the ‘hallowed turf’ my school days changed for the better. Kind Nuns and friendly girls greeted me and friendships began which continue to this day. Looking back I realise that there were no social / fi nancial divisions even though 2 Rolls Royces could be seen regularly parked outside the front door! In fact there was just one invisible curtain that separated the pupils into two groups - Boarders and Daygirls and the latter - to which I belonged - were left in no doubt that they were ‘second class pupils’!! In those days St T’s was fi rst and foremost a Boarding School and we Daygirls were interlopers / part timers who were unable to partake in the social after class activities whatever they were.

I recall the various Nuns and Teachers, each in their own way a true individual, who taught me - Miss Alexander known as Beetle, for why I know not, who gave me a life-long enthusiasm for Latin, Miss Murtagh, absolutely stunning with her long dark hair so very Duchess of Cambridge, scarlet painted nails and the stature of a model and to think that she became a nun in another Order. Miss Jackson with her hair swept up at the back but who failed to make her history lessons as interesting as Miss M’s Maths. Mother Veronique - in those days Nuns were either Teachers (Mothers) or Domestics (Sisters) - whose patience I tried sorely being unable to draw a straight line with a ruler so eventually she realised Art was not for me. Mother Bernard came to the same conclusion with my inability to sew as did Rev Mother Teresa who was compelled to write to my Parents terminating Piano lessons as Marian has no ear for music. Miss Hayes who worked for Madame Vacani who used to teach Princess Margaret and Princess Elizabeth to dance, joined the trio in trying to teach me the impossible - waltz, tango etc remain a mystery to this day. French taught by Madame Monjou was a delight and coupled with Latin and English Lit and Language became my forte. Although my French accent has always been atrocious Miss Shuttleworth, the Elocution Teacher, made very sure that her pupils’ articulation, voice interpretation and pronunciation were beyond reproach. If only she could be alive today to tutor the TV stars I might not think that my hearing is defi cient. Mother Winifred, the star of the teaching staff and in my estimation the person who made the school what it was and is and hopefully will always be, occupied the position of Headmistress. A brilliant brain, fantastic understanding of human nature, adherent of Tough Love as far as discipline was concerned but kind and fair so one knew where one stood. She taught Science, Maths and Current Events. So as to be able to fully interact with her musings on the latter subject The Times and Punch magazine were placed on the cabinet outside 5th Form and entrance to the Community. How I looked forward to that weekly lesson. In fact I justifi ed her faith in me by passing O level Economics when taking a Secretarial Course – my only pass in fact.

I have stated that M Winifred was an outstanding nun and I am reminded of events that crystallise this perception. One day during a General Science lesson I was dismissed from class due to inattention – caught doing French homework! The shame of having to go to M Winifred’s study for censure when a 5th former was demeaning. I received a Yellow card which was the top punishment (did somebody in the FA get the idea from St T’s?). Proclamation was held every Monday 2pm in the gym and good and bad marks/ cards were read out which was humiliating.

Imagine my utter shock when a few weeks later at this same venue it was announced that a new position of Prefect for Day girls was to take place. Without mentioning any names there were a couple of girls in my class who never received any bad marks so I thumped the girl sitting next to me in congratulation! Who! I had underestimated M Winifred it was my name read out. Every Sunday after I left, I went up to School for supper and a chat with M W telling her of my ambition to become a MP and also I questioned her reason for making me a Prefect in view of the less than perfect record I held. Her reply was that I knew how to be naughty, was a born leader and had vindicated her choice by being the Strictest Prefect ever! Sadly I never achieved that particular ambition and sadder still her premature death meant that I was never able to tell her that she was the blueprint in all respects of Margaret Thatcher.

When in 6th Form there were perks one being that Ranmore Common could be an area for study. Sitting there in beautiful sunshine I suddenly realised it was 3.45 and the end of lessons bell had to be rung by myself at 3.50. Puffi ng and panting I arrived in the corridor in the nick of time but came face to face with M W who was startled to see me in such a state. I thought the lesson of punctuality had been learnt but plainly not as the next time I met her at the same place her remark was embarrassing “my dear you look like an iron foundry”. Indeed I did as Lindy Williams (Graham) had washed my hair and as we did in those days put it in large metal rollers. What a sight I must of looked!

Before I close I must make mention of the day I was called to her study to discuss a punishment I had given to a boisterous girl who regularly came to 6th form to write 100 lines. I knew that I was not achieving the desired result so instead told her to learn The Lady of Shallot. The girl’s Mother phoned M W to complain bitterly about the harshness but M W said that she supported her Prefect although she told me that she thought I had been rather tough but understood my reason.

Although St.T’s no longer has nuns in situ it is still a beautiful school and holds wonderful memories for me. I do try and visit Sisters Brede, Carmel, Josephine, Francis and Pauline at the Sherborne house where they now live and urge all Stoga ladies to drop in when in the area.

Happy Days and to think that 70 years have passed so quickly but with no regrets at all that I was fortunate to attend the greatest of schools.

In Touch

Lindy (Graham) Williams with daughtersHaving retired twelve years ago I fi nd I am busier than ever from studying French, Mahjong, lace making and woodcarving. I also belong to a U3A ensemble group where I play the clarinet. I love driving but no longer do school runs for my grandchildren as only 2 are still in college, 3 at university and 3 have graduated. Time fl ies…

1955

Tessa (Stone) Nash I live in Cranleigh and I have two sons and a daughter who is an old girl. I have an older sister Shirley - Anne (Stone) Hines who lives in Somerset. My hobbies include golf for many years and now Bridge and Short Mat bowls at Ewhurst.

1956 Jenny Connor Please say Hi to Lindy Williams and Margaret Homan. The fi rst lay person I ever met at St. T’s was Margaret’s mother who was having a holiday with the nuns, at the time my parents took me there for an interview. Where have the years gone? That was 1951.

Now it is the Queen’s 90th birthday being celebrated. One of my clearest memories was when the King died and I think it was Mother Veronique who came into the dining room and announced the fact. I was mad on the horses (and one of the main reasons my parents sent me to the school!). My favourite was “Kim” and I understood her to say ‘Kim had died’ and I was just so upset! My hearing is still not very good...but I still love horses!

How the convent has developed? Mother Winifred told us we can only cope with 100 boarders when I was starting and now there must be room for 300-400? The fees may be more than 50 guineas a term too???

The youngest of my grandchildren (10) is a little girl of fi ve and it would have been wonderful if she lived in UK and could have been a pupil at Grove House. Dreams are free?

My good wishes to you and helpers. I wonder are there any nuns still at the school? If there are any as old as me please say “Hello and Blessings”. Kind regards, Jenny Smith No.4/1952-56.

1952Dawn (Newman-Horrill) HorrillI have had a lovely summer. Just returned from a holiday in Inverness with my Scottish Friends. They have a very comfortable Croft in Laid. We played golf at Durness, and paddled in the Scottish waters close by. Golf was also good at Castle Stuart and Inverness. We visited Skye, which is always fabulous and Portree just looking “chocolate box” beautiful. The highlight was being invited to the 19th Annual Gathering of The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, at the Cameron Barracks, Inverness, regrettably the last. Marvellous display of Pipe Bands, and the swirling of the kilts. We were fortunate to be given tickets for the Men’s Single’s Final at Wimbledon, another fantastic day to have celebrated. Now it is back to “porridge” preparing the garden for the” winter sleep”, and planting bulbs for the Spring. I will be out of the country for Christmas and the New Year as I am visiting South Africa. It will be lovely to feel the warmth of the sun in the depth of the English winter. (Great for the old body and bones!!!!!) I am looking forward to the Reunion, will be with Carol Walker 1970 a much younger “old girl”.

1953Elizabeth M Angas (nickname at school – Aggie!)Here is the story of my life at St Teresa’s:

I was at St Teresa’s from 1942 until Christmas 1952. I was a weekly boarder in the same form as Lindy (Graham/Williams). I learnt the ‘cello and piano with Reverend Mother Teresa, and was in the school choir, the chapel choir, and the school orchestra. You may know that my younger brother - Richard, was a famous opera singer (google) He died unexpectedly 3years ago in the middle of a rehearsal.

I was in charge of the St John Fisher House in my last year at school, whilst Lindy looked after the St Thomas More House so we were joint House Captains! I left school to start my nurse’s training in1953 (aged 18) at Kings College Hospital and went on to also become a midwife and health visitor. I specialised in psychiatric nursing and in nurse- teaching. Whilst training and working, I did two degrees part-time in Psychology and Psychology of Education. In 1975, I became an Educationist at London University (Garnet College). As a Senior Lecturer, I was responsible for the Teacher Training of Health Professionals (i.e. trained nurses, physios, OT’s etc.) I fi nally retired, whilst at Greenwich University in 1995 after a fulfi lling career of 42 years.

I now work as a Quaker spiritual healer and an autogenic and psycho synthesis therapist. I am 81 and still fi t and active. I live in Woolwich with my 2 dogs - a long-haired Weimaraner and a golden cocker Spaniel. I write articles and poetry for various magazines, and play the clavichord.

With Kind Regards to everyone who remembers me! Love from Elizabeth Angas.

1959Pauline (Wood) SheppardHad a lovely day meeting up with St T’s friends Penny (Rivers) Bun and Hilary (Silverstone) also family friend in summer – many memories of 60+ years ago are still vivid!!!

I am thrilled that HORSES are back at St T’s as I have wonderful memories of riding Tosca, Blackie, Polly etc. and also stable helping and looking after Kim. I was “runaway with”, on Ranmore Common, when riding Saudi. I fell off and was badly winded and remember Valerie putting me up on Doodle with her and carrying me back to school. (Thankfully Saudi also found his way back home safely!) Mother Jo put me in a hot bath until it went cold!! I ached for DAYS afterwards!

N.B. It was ‘Saudades’ who won the mock Derby on Epsom Downs in 1943 ridden by E Smith. There is a wonderful press photo of Mother Veronica leading in the winner! (This newspaper photo used to be on wall in long hall.)

1967Jackie (Phipps) WadsworthI really hope I can make it to the Reunion this year !!

I’m still working part-time as a Health Visitor here in Dorset. It is 40 years

this month since I qualifi ed !!! I am also still part time nursing as a Practice Nurse, so quite busy.

My husband died 2 years ago this October, shortly after my younger daughter’s wedding. His illness was totally unexpected. Horses are still my “passion” and I try and ride as often as I can. Luckily, Misty lives in the fi eld at the bottom of my garden, so I don’t have far to go !!!

1967Jo (Gibson) Bray

Having retired a few years ago from my soft furnishing business I have been part of a NADFAS team making replica costumes at Polesden Lacey. I also volunteer for “Connect” a local group which helps people with dementia. I live in Effi ngham and retain close contact with St Teresa’s as my husband has been a Governor and lately Chairman for some years.

Pam (Hoare) Hanratty I am still enjoying teaching special

needs children on a part-time basis at Fulham Prep School. Also, I have

encouraged and supported my husband in writing his fi rst book which was recently published: ‘The Making of an Immigration Judge’. This book gives

a great insight to an area that has been a major concern to the general public.

1974Jo (Knight) DalyFirstly, our group of 5 ex-St T’s classmates (plus other halves) had a fantastic week away in Spain in June to jointly celebrate our ‘VERY BIG’ birthday. We see each other regularly, but it was extra special to have so much quality time together and so many laughs. The group included Anita Lyons (Wheatley), Ambie Desoutter (Day), Julie Dupenois-MacAmhlaoibh, Cathy Wardale and Jo Daly (Knight). The evidence is on Facebook, with photos of ‘Then’ and ‘Now’!

I am now working as an interim management consultant. Being freelance means I can work whenever I have to (preferably not too often!), This gives us the freedom to travel, so Steve and I are soon heading off on a 3 month trip to China, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji to explore, and meet up again with far-fl ung friends and family. So exciting!

1976Sue (Jackson) Flather (on the right) with Antoinette GabelliniNot much news of interest from me! I live in Oakham in Rutland with my husband, Robert. My son, Richard is married and lives in Norfolk and my daughter, Harriet, has just bounced back to the nest after Conservatoire and is setting out on the life of a freelance musician. We have had quite a nomadic life (UK only though) and Sister Catherine once asked me to stop moving as we were making such a mess of her address book, but we have been in Rutland for 15 years. I went to Sheffi eld University to read English Lit but since then have in general been a wife and mother, but have variously had an interiors business, worked for Macmillan Cancer Support and also for the Citizens Advice Bureau. I’m still in touch with Sue Brelsford, Deborah Wilson and Claire Kelly, also with Antoinette Gabellini who is godmother to my son.

Thanks again for the reunion, and I will try to go on one of the London walks, if I can!

1984Ana Cardenal JunqueraYou do not know how happy it makes me receiving St. Teresa’s news.

I should write to Sister Carmel, and many other important things, but even though it is so late to me, I wanted to send you at least one note, telling you about the happiness receiving all the news, thanks to at least the email, and other things. If it wasn’t for this way of communication, I could not keep in touch as I have been moving a lot in the last 10 years, and I mean it, around Spain and all over the world.

An enormous hug to whoever you can contact from 1983, if I am not confused on the dates, Mrs Rua, Sister Carmel, Mrs Chilcott, Mrs. Packman, Mrs. Mc Guire, Mrs. Brown, sorry for forgetting all the names, Mrs. Packman, if she could ever imagine how far her help has been to me in so many occasions, especially working with people for English language lessons; all the girls I’ve met there, Cristina Rodriguez de Azero, her closest friend Bernie Walsh, Vicky sorry, just forgot the surname, Elizabeth Gordon Clark, Jenny, a lot of girls from Needle work - Mrs. Chilcott lesson’; Type writing, the sixth, fi fth formers, the Brownies, a lot of people, Sister Catherine, so many that I still keep in my mind and heart.

My daughter is studying as a university student in Glamorgan, and a big infl uence for that decision was her mummy’s experience and the visit to Saint Teresa’s in the summer of 2003. I have a big diffi culty being open in social networks, and that is the reason why sometimes I stopped myself writing to you;

I received in the 90’s some letters from Jenny, and Elizabeth Gordon Clark, but I believe some of their letters where not received.

Tell me if you have any contact with Mrs. Rua or her daughter Cathy, that I sometimes remember her advice about my couple Pedro, that she met on September 2003, and we are still a team. Now a days I am helping my father so, that is the reason why I am so late still on the computer. An enormous hug.

I have done various jobs but the most rewarding up until almost the end was being a prison offi cer, now retired due to work related issues. In March 2016 (Mother’s Day) I got married for the 1st time to John Miller at Gretna Green over the Anvil and given away by my son. Nineteen of us went up for the weekend including my great nephews who were my page boys. Safe to say we all partied so it was lucky we didn’t get married until 4pm on Mother’s Day and we were the only wedding that day.

As some of you will know I have recently been diagnosed with aggressive LCH which is stem cell cancer and have refused savage chemo, at present I am treating myself holistically (Acupuncture Osteopathy, medical cannabis, various supplements and mindfulness meditation) under the close supervision of Prof Chu from Hammersmith Hospital fi ngers crossed I am improving slowly.

I believe I left St. Teresa’s around 1985. Mine was a bit of an unusual story!

I adored my family and missed them hugely, so much so, that I decided to run through the school woods at 5.00 o’clock one morning in the dark, jump on a train to London and plant myself on a bench outside my sister’s work in Knightsbridge.

Sadly, I was frog marched right back to school but not before a bit of a reunion with all the family, so the fi ve minutes of madness paid off, but I believe I caused a fl urry of activity back at the school. Needless to say I got a good telling off by Sister Carmel, and a disapproving look by Mother John. However, I think they secretly had a soft spot for me, knowing I was so home sick!

My brother used to delight all the girls in St. Luke’s dormitory when he came to drop me off, unfortunately the angels called for him in 1997 with a car accident whilst working overseas, but happy memories of those days are fi rmly etched in my mind. Along with the old ladies we used to frequently visit down the road by the drama hut, one I believe by the name of Flo.

Who knew having lived the majority of my life in London, both before and after St. T’s, that I might return to reside only a few miles down the road and living right opposite a current pupil of St. Teresa’s who went to fi rst school with my daughter, now 16. It’s a small world!

My best friend at school turned out to be my forever friend for life, Fleur Bettinson, now married as Fleur Davey.

Our year group was Vanessa Connolly, Sarah-Jane Pestana, Pippa Garland, Polly Christie, Alex Danby, Isobel Russell etc.

1989 Heidi (Thorp) Williamss-RichardsonI got married in 2004 and have 2 children Jasmine born in 2005 and Joshua born in 2006. I am still a keen hockey player. My sister Tanya who also went to St T’s lives in Perth, Australia and she has a daughter Savannah aged 20.

BURSARYZoe BugginsIn the Summer, I went to Iceland with Sofi é and 4 other girls from guides and 3 guide leaders from west-surrey. I had to raise £900 to go for a week and instead of just handing in the money, we had to earn it. The purpose of the trip was that we would visit an eco-village called Sólheimar, which is run by handicapped people and help out. We did a lot of weeding, sweeping, we painted fences tables and chairs. We also got to help bake some cookies, which were later sold in their shop. In addition helped with planting trees. Every year, Sólheimar plants trees, this is because Iceland had very few trees after they had them cut down so now people are trying to restore the ecological system. We all learnt so much there. We also learnt a lot on the geographical side. We saw geysers, the gigantic Gullfoss waterfall and we got to walk through the Mid-Atlantic ridge, where the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate are split apart. At the very end of the trip we were rewarded with a relaxing time in the hot springs spa on the way to the airport. It was an incredible experience, I gained so much from it and I’m very grateful for all the support I got to make it happen.

Sofi é DavidsonIn the summer holidays Zoe and I went to Iceland on a service trip with a group of six guides and three leaders from West-Surrey.

We helped out at Solheimer, which is an eco-village run by people with all sorts of disabilities. We spent some time weeding, painting fences, chairs and tables and sweeping. Luckily we got to help in the bakery and made some delicious cookies. As Iceland has a very few trees Solheimer plant a large number every year, and we got to help with the process by removing the weeds from the young tree saplings. The entire experience was incredible as we got to learn about their community and the way they live their lives as well as being able to see the beauty of Iceland and meet some new friends.

Penny Smith In October 2015 I signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with Plymouth University. After nearly a year of fundraising, raising over £100,000 as a group, on August 24th 2016 we fi nally set off for the climb. The challenge was immense, starting in the jungle and ending on the dusty slopes of the peak, we climbed thousands of meters each day. After 4 days and 1 night of climbing, through temperatures as low as -25 degrees celsius, we fi nally reached the peak just after sunrise on 31.8.2016. Despite the average success rate being only 2/3 and us tackling the Machame route in 6 days rather than the usual 7, all 29 of us reached the summit after

battling through the exhausting days and altitude sickness together. The climb itself was without the doubt the greatest challenge I have ever faced, but an incredible experience nonetheless raising a huge amount of money for a great cause. Since we started fundraising, the new MenB vaccination in babies has been proved to be a success, and will go on to save thousands of lives, making the climb worth every second.

Summer Research Project – Amy BatesThis summer, at the end of the 2nd year of my Chemistry degree, I undertook an 8 week research project at Warwick University, under the supervision of Dr. Gemma-Louise Davies. Her research group is investigating the use of nanoparticles as drug delivery vehicles; in other words, the use of very small molecules to deliver medicines to specifi c sites within the body.

I was based in the university’s research laboratories, chemically engineering the surfaces of mesoporous silica nanoparticles in order to improve the uptake and release of model drugs. The aim is to improve the effi ciency of medicines, potentially reducing the dose required and/or the treatment time. This has enormous benefi ts for patients and could also reduce the cost of providing treatment.

Participating in a research project provides a fantastic opportunity to enhance my theoretical knowledge and laboratory skillset, and to experience what a career in scientifi c research could be like. As participation is self-funded, I am very grateful to STOGA for their support in awarding an educational bursary to me.

This photograph (right) captures the release of a model drug from mesoporous silica nanoparticles into solution. The experiment was conducted in a dark environment to prevent photobleaching of the model drug: that is, its chemical modifi cation by light, which would adversely affect the experimental results.

Solid and aqueous samples of mesoporous silica nanoparticles, in which the particle surfaces have been chemically engineered. The samples in foil have been loaded with model drugs and covered to prevent photobleaching for the reasons stated above.

Amber McEvoy Zambia: In the summer I was fortunate enough to undertake a volunteering trip to Lusaka, Zambia. The main project that we worked on whilst we were there was helping to build a new home for the street girls who had been taken in by an organisation called ‘Vision of Hope’. Their vision is to help give girls the hope, opportunity and respect that they deserve and to give them a happier, family environment for them to live in. When we visited their old home we were shocked at the living conditions, and how so many people could live and sleep in such a tiny house, and just to see how excited they were to move into their new home made all our hard work worth it. We also had the opportunity to visit those who were more vulnerable such as those living with HIV without any access to medicine, and those who were forced to live on the streets as they had nowhere else to go to. The most poignant moment for me was visiting an orphanage for babies, some as young as a few months old, and also for young children, many of whom had no family. Many of their stories were heart-breaking yet the smiles we were able to put on their faces just by spending a little bit of time with them, is something I will never forget.

Last year 2016 was a very mixed year for me as it started off with Barry my husband, getting his CBE in the New Year Honours List, and then us both having our fi rst grandchild, Holly Piper Humphreys at the end of March and sadly in November my dad passed away nearly reaching 94 years of age

Dr Barry Humphreys, who retired last year as Chairman of the British Air Transport Association (BATA), received a CBE – or Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Barry (he says we can still call him that) was awarded the honour “for services to aviation and charity”. In a long and distinguished career Barry was Virgin Atlantic Airways’ Director of External Affairs & Route Development (1995-2009), before that he was a major regulator at the time of the creation of the European single market in aviation as Head of Air Services Policy for the UK Civil Aviation Authority.

PROJECT 16/18Plans for the next exciting development project were announced last year. This was to include a new Art Centre which incorporated some Prep classrooms and a Sixth Form Centre study centre being crafted out of the old Art building. Following diffi culties with planning, the project has now been turned on its head with the main feature now being a new multi-million pound Sixth Form Centre which will incorporate eight A level classrooms, a study library, a large common room and a state of the art lecture theatre. Planning is well under way and the project has already passed the pre-application process. Building work is due to commence in July with completion in summer 2018.

New Prep buildings are still very much part of the project and two new classrooms will be built at the same time as the Sixth Form Centre

Investment in Art is still very much on the agenda and the school architects have come up with some exciting new plans to convert Campion House into a modern Art Centre. Work for this will commence following the completion of the new Sixth Form Centre.

EXCELLENT RESULTSThe Upper Sixth leavers celebrated fantastic A Level results this year. The girls gained 50% A* or A grade, and as a result the vast majority gained places at their fi rst choice university; indeed, a record-breaking number will be attending Russell Group universities. Not to be outdone, the Year 11 also achieved some wonderful GCSEs.

Director of Studies, Gareth Beynon, commented that ‘the girls and staff must be congratulated for all their hard work and tremendous success; they have really done us proud.’

We extend our congratulations to the girls who are leaving us as a credit to the school.
