Vehicles were delayed for up to seven hours at the end of July because of stricter checks by Spanish border guards "to prevent smuggling". The European Commission said Gibraltar was not part of the passport-free Schengen zone and therefore Spain was "obliged to carry out checks on persons and on goods", but must abide by EU law. It said in a statement: "The commission urges both Spain and Gibraltar to allow for smooth and efficient border crossings while taking into account these obligations." The commission said it had received assurances at the beginning of 2013 that border checks would be "proportionate", but said it had suggested "a technical meeting with the Spanish authorities in order to address the issues raised by the border checks, including the alleged excessive waiting times". In an interview with the ABC newspaper published on Sunday, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said Spain was considering charging people a new 50 euro (£43) fee to enter and exit Gibraltar through its border post. Gibraltar has linked Spain's tough stance to the creation of an artificial reef in waters off Gibraltar. said he was appearingto rebuff the "lies, manipulations and maliciousinsinuations encouraged bycertain political leaders"over the scandal. He said theeconomy was beginning torecover from years ofcrisis, and expressedconcern that a continuedfocus on the scandal wasdamaging Spain's image.

For the first time, headmitted making amistake by putting trust"in someone who we nowknow did not deserve it".But he denied "committing

the criminal offence ofcovering up for someonewho is alleged to beguilty". Former PPtreasurer Luis Barcenas isin custody while beinginvestigated over othercorruption allegations.Rajoy repeated that hewould not resign, and saidSpaniards should awaitthe outcome of judicialinvestigations into theaffair. "Justice will showthere was nothing illegalin my own behaviour orthat of my party," he said.

In response, SocialistParty leader Alfredo Perez

"You must go,Mr Rajoy," he said.Representatives of otherparties later denouncedthe president's claims thathe knew nothing ofwrongdoing by MrBarcenas, saying theirrelationship was too closeto make such a claimcredible.

An invisible summertimedangerExperts who know aboutthe ill health effects oftropospheric ozone – alsoknown as low-level ozoneor bad ozone, as opposed tostratospheric ozone, whichfilters ultraviolet radiation–want to know why theauthorities do not do abetter job of informingcitizens about pollutionlevels when they exceedsafety thresholds. FedericoVelázquez de Castro, adoctor in chemistry atMadrid's ComplutenseUniversity and author ofseveral studies on ozonesaid the way thegovernment is neglectingthe issue is a cause forconcern: "Pollutioninformation is extremelyimportant because it saveslives."

Velázquez de Castrotook part in a study thatexamined the relationshipbetween heat andmortality in Seville: theanalysis showed thathigher ozone

concentrations affectedmen more than womenbecause they spent moretime outdoors. Low-levelozone is a secondarypollutant, forming whenother toxic gases (mainlynitrogen oxide emissionsfrom vehicles) react withsolar radiation. Spain, likeother Mediterraneancountries registering hightemperatures and manyhours of sunlight, isparticularly exposed tolow-level ozone pollutionin the summer.

A report by theEuropean EnvironmentAgency using 2012 datashowed that Spain wasthe EU country thatmost often surpassedrecommended levels ofthis gas. It appears farfrom the car exhausts incity centres – in city parks,on the outskirts and evenin outlying municipalities. The green groupEcologists in Action hasfor years been asking local

governments to informcitizens about pollutionlevels in real time. InMadrid, they suggestsignboards similar tothose about traffic jams.

People with respiratoryproblems are most at riskfrom high ozoneconcentration at groundlevel, and should beespecially alert toinformation aboutenvironmental pollutants.Legislation makes itmandatory for authoritiesto inform citizens when acertain threshold isreached, which in the caseof ozone is 180micrograms/m3. Abovethat value, it is considereda health risk. At thosetimes, local and regionalauthorities oftenrecommend via their

websites that at-riskgroups such as children, the elderly and peoplewith respiratory problemsrefrain from exercisingoutdoors.

Spain tops theEuropean charts for ozonepollution. In 2012, itsurpassed the health riskthreshold 168 days out ofthe year, ahead of otherhot countries such as Italy(163 days) and Greece (151days), according to theEuropean EnvironmentAgency.

The EU estimates thatfrom 2001 to 2010 between15 and 61 percent of thecontinent's urban populationwas exposed to excessiveozone levels. Citizensbreathe polluted airwithout even realizing it.

With banks under fire forabusive mortgage clauses, evictions andmismanagement, theirhigh-handed treatment ofindividual account holderswas revealed by the Bankof Spain last week.

Last year 43,647 caseswere lodged with the Bankof Spain’s complaintsdepartment, a 20.7percent rise over 2011 andan historic high, accordingto the department’sannual report.

The Bank of Spainissued 2,838 rulings infavour of the complainantin 2012, of which only519 were subsequentlyresolved. In 82 per cent ofcases the Bank of Spain’sdecision was ignored bythe lenders. The Banknoted in its report: “Thenumber of rectifications onthe part of the banks does

not even reach a fifth ofthe total, which is clearlyunsatisfactory.”

The situation hascaused the regulator toalso lose patience with thebanks. The report stated:“The department is goingto closely monitor thissituation, especially inthose cases whereindications of serious orreiterated breaches oftransparency andcustomer protection areevident. These instanceswill be handed to theinspectorate.”

Unemployment figures forJuly show that thenumber of people out ofwork dropped for the fifthstraight month in a row–by 64,866 – and 32,890more workers registeredwith social security, theLabour Ministryannounced last Friday.

The unemploymentfigures have not droppedfor a similar consecutiveperiod since 2007, but the

number of new socialsecurity affiliations is thesecond worst figure sincethe crisis began in 2008.Compared with June, thenumber of unemployeddropped by 1.36 per cent,to stand at 4,698,814.

However, it is stillunclear whether this trendwill continue after thehigh tourist season ends inSeptember. Seasonal jobsmake up most of the

positive data, with morehirings in the service andconstruction industries. The ruling PartidoPopular praised the latestfigures in a statement inParliament, saying thatthe government labourreforms were working. Butthe country's largestunions, the CCOO and theUGT, warned that jobswere only being createdthrough temporary andshort-term contracts.

Spain posted a tradesurplus for only the secondtime on record in May asthe exports continued tothrive and importsremained weak because oflow consumer demandcaused by the ongoingrecession.

According to figuresreleased on Wednesday bythe Bank of Spain, the

Same sex couples will be allowed to apply to marry in Uruguayfrom Monday, nearly four months after a bill was approved by thecountry's Congress. About half a dozen couples should apply fordates at civil registry offices in the coming days, activists say.

Following Argentina in 2010, Uruguay became the second SouthAmerican nation to pass same-sex marriage legislation. AcrossLatin America, the number of countries allowing gay unions ormarriages is growing. In Colombia, a judge recently ordered anotary to sign a document which – while not being a marriagecertificate – in effect gave a same-sex couple the same rights asheterosexual couples. Mariano Rajoy must be heavingbig sighs of relief these days –those pesky opposition

politicians gave gone off on holidayuntil the end of this month and theGibraltar border checks are currentlydominating the headlines. So storiesabout former PP treasurer LuisBárcenas have dropped off the frontpages for the first time in six months.

Reactions to Rajoy's appearance inParliament last Thursday havevaried. Pro-government dailies

(two in all) said Rajoy had won the"mano a mano" with opposition leaderAlfredo Perez Rubalcaba while the pro-Socialist dailies (all the rest) trotted outthe same old accusations – all of whichrepeat word for word those thatBárcenas has been making. Rubalcabaso faithfully parroted the latter that LaRazon newspaper called him"Rubalbárcenas". If that catches on, itcould mean the end of Rubalcaba'spolitical career, which is not tipped tosurvive the Socialist Party's next majormeeting to decide how to elect theircandidate for the 2015 general elction.

Iwatched Rajoy's address toParliament and I thought he put upa good performance. In fact, he

gave Rubalcabas a thorough verbalpounding, throwing back things he saidwhen he was Interior Minister:

1“There are those who want toconvert Parliament into a hugepolice station. That's absurd." Yet

that is exactly what Rubalcaba hasbeen trying to do for the past sixmonths.

2“It is the judges who decide if theallegations are true." YetRubalcaba has accepted

Bárcenas's allegations as the word ofGod.

3“We must remind the opposition torespect the presumption ofinnocence and not use lies and

unfounded suspicions, not to sayinfamy, as a political weapon." Yet forRubalcaba, Rajoy is guilty and mustprove his innocence, and he's beenusing lies and unfounded suspicions ashis only political weapon for the pastsix months.

Rubalcaba sat stony-facedthroughout it all and never haveI seen such a sorrier-looking

bunch of Socialists as those who satthrough Rajoy's perfectly deliveredspeech last Thursday.

For one political observer, proofthat Rajoy had won thatparticular round was that

Rubalcaba and all the other SocialistMPs sneaked out of a back door afterthe session was over to avoid the press, while Rajoy and his people walkedcalmly out through the main door.

But the comments that surprisedme most came from JustinoSinova, writing in the very pro-

Socialist El Pais. At the beginning ofhis blog titled "Al borde del k.o." (Onthe edge of KO) Sinova admits hisconscience is making him disagree withthe paper's editorial line, whichsupported Rubalcaba. But, Sinova said, the parliamentary session which hadbeen touted as the end of a fight withthe foregone conclusion that the Leftwas going to deliver the final fatal axblow turned out to be anything butthat. Sinova said Rajoy had delivereda well structured speech in which headmitted his mistake but affirmed thathe had not committed the crime ofcovering up for a suspect (Bárcenas),while denying the latter's accusations –as false, based on half truths and hisinterpretations of half a dozen truths. He reminded the opposition that theonus of proof was on the accuser, notthe accused and criticised the climatecreated by the opposition – "theSocialists are not interested in myexplanations, they only wanted me tocome to Parliament to resign". He thenwent on the offensive against his mainaccuser (Rubalcaba) – "you neverappeared in this Chamber to explainthe Faisan case (a scandal involvingthe Basque terrorist group whenRubalacaba was Interior Minister)even though the PP and the otherpolitical groups asked you to do so morethan 40 times".

Rajoy ended his speech sayingquite firmly that "I am not goingto resign or call early elections."

The only thing he didn't do was thumbhis nose at Rubalcaba, who broughtnothing new to the session, except theendless repetition of Bárcenas'accusations. Although in a way he didthumb his nose – by pointing out thatall the threats about a no-confidencewere so much hot air, becauseparliamentary rules made it possiblefor such a vote to be taken without thepresence of the PM – "So you didn'tdrag me here after all," Rajoy said.

Perhaps now we can look forwardto a few weeks of peace and quiet– but that leaves me with one big

problem. What on earth am I going towrite about until all those peskypoliticians return to make lifemiserable for all of us? I suppose I canalways take a few pot shots atVenezuela, which is still refusing togive me the pension they owe me!

Dodging responsibilityTurning the tables

We don't know what is worse:admitting many monthsafter the fact that he made

a mistake without assumingresponsibility, or keeping quiet andletting the whole judicial processplay its course as the prime ministertried to do when his party's formertreasurer, Luis Bárcenas, beganfloating allegations about the extrabonuses he paid out to members ofthe Partido Popular. Mariano Rajoyfinally opened up last Thursdaybefore Congress in what was a tensebut historic session in which a headof government admitted for the firsttime he placed too much trust in hisformer treasurer who indulged instill questionable dealings."I made amistake, I was wrong to trust thisperson we now know could not betrusted," he said. It was the firsttime since the entire case brokeagainst Bárcenas in 2009, when hewas first provisionally charged in theGürtel inquiry, that the primeminister has made reference to hisone-time close confidental colleague,a man he personally appointed tohead the party's finances during thatheated PP convention in 2007 inwhich Esperanza Aguirre tried tooust him from leadership.

But the fact that he hasadmitted to what he says wasa mistake in trust doesn't

solve the image problem that theruling party is facing. The PP’sapproval rating has dropped by morethan 12 percentage points over thepast few months. And the oppositionSocialists continue to reiterate thatthey will still reserve their right tocall for a non-confidence vote, whichno doubt will be backed by theopposition parties. Rajoy has accusedthe Socialists of wanting todestabilise Spain with theirdemands for a vote of censure.

PP lawmakers are clamouringvictory over Rajoy’sappearance, saying that his

explanations to the Spanish peopleabout Bárcenas were sufficient. Butthere are many questions thatremain, and the former treasurerintends to bring out more evidenceconcerning the financial dealingsinside the party when he continuesto testify before the High Court laterthis month.

As for Rajoy, he won’t resign buthis international image as aserious conservative leaders is

being shattered. Even TheEconomist wrote last month: “MrRajoy’s refusal to take responsibilityfor his party’s dirty secrets does

nothing to regain voters’ trust.” Andthat growing lack of confidence issomething that Rajoy will never beable to contain.

Crisis in Morocco

Abureaucratic blunder lastweek, that led to the release ofa convicted paedophile

through a royal pardon, thrustMorocco into its worst political crisissince King Mohamed VI came to thethrone in 1999. A 63-year-oldSpaniard, Daniel Galván Viña, wasone of the 48 inmates serving time inMoroccan jails who were grantedpardons by the king in his annualgesture to celebrate the anniversaryof his investiture. Galván wasconvicted in 2011 and sentenced to30 years in prisons for abusing 11children in Morocco – it was theworst child abuse case in thecountry’s history. Two lists had beenmade for the king’s consideration bythe Spanish Embassy in Rabat.

The first contained the names of30 Spaniards who were justseeking a transfer to serve out

their sentences in Spanish jails; theother listed 18 inmates who asked tobe granted full pardons. Galván’sname was in the former. Butsomeone at the royal palace in Rabatmixed the two lists and KingMohamed approved a blanket ofpardons for all 48. When it wasdiscovered that the notorious Galvánwas released, the news set off wavesof protests across the nation thispast weekend which were quicklyput down by riot police.

For the first time, KingMohamed had to explain to hispeople that a mistake had been

made and he didn’t know theseriousness of Galván’s crimes. Then, in an unprecedented move, thepardon was revoked and aninternational warrant for Galván –who by now was back in Spain – wasissued. The convicted paedophilewas captured in Murcia on Mondayand appeared before the High Courtyesterday. The head of the Moroccanprison system was fired, and nowMoroccan authorities are anxious tomeet with their Spanishcounterparts to ensure anembarrassing situation like this willnever happen again.

Keep summer safeMost people have homeand contents insurancebut, with the weatherbeing as hot as it is andeverybody leaving doorsand windows open to tryand cool things down, didyou know that if a burglarslips in through that openwindow, you may not becovered by homeinsurance? So, if you’re planning to

enjoy the summer at homehere in Spain, or goingabroad, take a fewprecautionary steps tohelp protect your homeand possessions.

Anti-burglary tips

Close outside doors andwindows. Even if youleave a room for a fewminutes, make sure thewindows and doors to theoutside are closed andpreferably locked.

Turn on your alarm.Heading to thesupermarket for picnicsupplies? Make sure youpunch the code into thekeypad. Insurancecompanies may not payout if you "forgot" to turnyour alarm on. It’s alwaysbetter to be safe thansorry, even if you’re onlypopping out for 10

minutes.Lock up any garden

items. Summer is a greattime for DIY, gardeningand barbecues, but thievescan – and do – stealgarden equipment that’sleft lying around. So leavepricier items likelawnmowers, outdoordining sets, bicycles etc.,locked away in a shed orgarage.

Don't make it easy forburglars. Don’t leaveanything lying aroundthat a burglar could use togain access to yourproperty – like tools tobreak open a door orwindow, or a ladder togain access to an upstairswindow. Home insuranceclaims have been deniedbecause burglars used anunsecured ladder to get in.

Don’t hide spare keysoutside. Burglars know allthe tricks and all thehiding places – so leavethat spare key with aneighbour or friend ratherthan under that flowerpot.

Don’t stay away for toolong. If you do, try and getsomeone to sleep over forpart of the time you’reaway. A lot of homeinsurance policies requirethat a property is not leftempty for lengthy spells –

typically 30 days. So ifyou’re lucky enough to beaway for that long, try andget someone to stay inyour home for at least onenight during any 30 dayperiod in order to keepyour home insurancevalid. Read your policysmall print to find out theexact vacancy period limit.

Clear the letterbox if youhave one. Letters andcirculars poking out ofyour postbox is a sure signyou’re away. Ask theneighbours to keep an eyeout for this while you’renot here – burglars will beon the lookout for anyobvious clues to an emptyhome.

Put your dog on a diet.If a dog flap is largeenough for a burglar to fitthrough, your homeinsurance policy might bevoided in the event of aclaim. Make sure yousecure any such entrypoints before heading offon your hols.

Double check thateverything’s locked. Youmay be racing to theairport or rushing for thetrain, but make sure youcheck all windows anddoors are locked and theburglar alarm, if you haveone, is set before you go.

The British Governmenthas issued the follow pressrelease in response to therecent escalation in tensionat the Gibraltar Spaincrossing point:

FCO Political DirectorSimon Gass, summonedthe Spanish Ambassadorto the United Kingdom,H.E. Federico Trillo, inorder to underline theBritish Government’sserious concerns regardingdelays at the Gibraltar-Spain border, and to seekreassurances that therewould be no repeat of theadditional checks thisweekend.

Foreign andCommonwealth OfficeMinister of State HugoSwire, pictured above, said:

“From 26th to 28th July, and again on 30th July, there were long delays atthe Gibraltar-Spain border

of up to seven hours, as aresult of whollydisproportionate checksintroduced by the Spanishauthorities on vehicles bothleaving and enteringGibraltar.”

“Disruption to borderflows has a direct impacton the prosperity and well-being of communities onboth sides of the border. The UK Government’sposition is that thesedelays are unjustified, unacceptable and have noplace at a border betweenEU partners.”

The SpanishAmbassador to the UnitedKingdom was lastsummoned to the FCO inNovember 2012 followingtwo serious incursions intoBritish GibraltarTerritorial Waters.

Following commentsreported today, the Foreign

and Commonwealth Officehas reasserted its ties withGibraltar.

The Foreign Office hasalso called for a politicalanswer to the currentsituation, looking tocontinue the UK’s strongrelationship with Spain. AForeign Office spokesmansaid:

“The Prime Minister hasmade clear that the UKgovernment will meet itsconstitutional commitmentsto the people of Gibraltarand will not compromiseon sovereignty. Ourdifferences with Spain onGibraltar will be resolvedby political means throughour relationship as EUpartners, not throughdisproportionate measuressuch as the border delayswe have seen over the pastweek. We have manycommon interests withSpain and wish to continue

to have a strongrelationship at every levelwith the Government ofSpain. The CordobaAgreement was anexample of our relationshipwith Spain workingeffectively, with theAgreement benefitingmany in the Campo area ofSpain. We are continuingto abide by our obligationsunder the Agreement andwe look to the Governmentin Spain to do likewise. Inthe meantime, we will beseeking an explanationfrom Spain followingreports that the Spanishgovernment might targetGibraltar with furthermeasures.”

QROPS (Qualifying Recognized OverseasPension Scheme) have been available to

ex-pats since April 2006.

There is no mystery to QROPS, they are basicallythe same as your UK pension but offer better

benefits than the UK. The process is very simpleand takes approximately three months to complete.

In the UK you may not take any benefits before you are 55 years of age. If you are 50 or aboveand have been outside the UK for 5 complete

tax years you may withdraw 25/30% and then an income at 55.

If you are pension rich but cash poor, this could bea way of solving temporary financial difficulties.

You have nothing to lose by asking but everythingto gain. We look forward to hearing from you

There has been an awfullot of confusion aboutwhether or not you areallowed to have bonfires,BBQs etc at this time ofyear.

Obviously, commonsense should dictate that itis downright dangerous tohave an open fire at thistime of year and theabsolute devastation tothe countryside – to theback of Fuengirola and allthe way along to Marbella, going inland as far asGuaro – last year shouldmake everyone realisethat this cannot beallowed. Even so,practically every morning, and very often before firstlight because they thinkthey can (and mostly do)get away with it, you cansee small plumes of smokerising from fires of gardencuttings etc.

We were therefore verypleased to discover that alady on a new Facebooksite “Local Fire andWeather Watch” hadtaken the trouble to findout what the actual law ison all of this. This is whatshe says:

“I asked them (the FireBrigade) straight out whatthe rules are for bonfires(hogueras). I was toldcategorically that youcannot have one at all, atany time or any day or inany conditions in an areadeemed "forestal". Don't befooled into thinking this isjust a forest area! I asked ,

pointing to a big field fullof olive trees, in thecampo, if that would beclassed as forestal and wasassured it certainly wouldbe. So you can gather thatif you are in an area witha good few trees or anorchard for example thiswould probably be classedas forestal.

This rule applies fromthe 1st June to 15thOctober. NO exceptions!(This also applies toBBQ's, coal/charcoal orgas!)

In non-forestal areassuch as urbanisations etcthe rules are very simple. You MUST have a"permiso" for a bonfirefrom your town hall. Thiswill involve a specialsection of the GuardiaCivil coming to inspectwhere you intend to haveit and if you have safetyprecautions in place. Thisinvolves a hose pipe/s anda cleared piece of landwhere you intend to havethe bonfire, together witha further area of clearedland to stop it getting outof hand.

You are NOT entitled tohave a bonfire without thispermiso. Failure to have apermiso can result inHUGE fines. If you do geta permiso and your bonfiregets out of hand thepermiso becomes void andnot only do you have topay a fine for letting it getout of hand but you alsohave to pay the emergencyservices costs for having tocome and put it out. If it is

breezy/windy and youhave the bonfire alight, the permiso becomes voidand if reported you will getfined.

Now on to thereporting! The FireBrigade were in NODOUBT that the firstpeople you call is 062 –Guardia Civil and NOT112. Why? Because 112 isfor ALL emergencies andcentralised for Andalucia.

062 puts you through tothe Guardia Civil and theyare responsible for goingout to check thebonfire/fire and thenactivating the relevantservices i.e. Bomberos/INFOCA /BRICA etc. They also check for anypermisos. The GuardiaCivil are the only ones whohave the authority to finepeople who have illegalbonfires whilst the 112services cannot issue fines.112 will attend anemergency via theGuardia Civil but it's theGuardia Civil who havethe authority to fine.

On the subject of BBQ'sI was told certainly NOTin an area forestal untilafter the 15th October butuntil then the localby-laws of thevillage/town/city wouldapply and you would haveto find them out throughyour local ayuntamiento(Town Hall). They did saythough to think verycarefully before you hadone! Is your area likely tocatch fire with any flyingembers/sparks etc? If so

then don't do it!! Theywere basically saying whatwe had all been sayingyesterday – if in doubt, don't!!!

I asked if all bonfiresshould be reported tothe Guardia Civil?"Absolutely" was the reply! They said if you see eithera fire or a bonfire it wasbetter to be safe thansorry. You can tell thedifference between abonfire and a fire in mostcases. Bonfires normallyhave a column of smoke(can be black, grey orwhite depending on whatis being burnt) howeverfires tend to have plumesof smoke and you canpossibly see flames. Againthe colour of the smokecan vary between black towhite.

So be in NO DOUBTfolks! The bomberos wouldprefer you to report anybonfire or fire to theGuiardia Civil on 062.They said exactly what wewere saying – don't thinksomeone else will do itbecause they may not!”

Written by Jill Leonardorganiser of the FacebookLocal Fire and WeatherWatch Group.

Editor says : Thanks forthat Jill. Now there’s noexcuse for having a firewhen you shouldn’t andputting all of us, ourhouses and our kids andanimals at risk. JUSTDON’T DO IT!

On the subject of fires Church supportsthose in needSt Andrew’s AnglicanChaplaincy has a longhistory of giving to localcharities, but a few yearsago the ChaplaincyCouncil decided thatinstead of a vague amountat the end of the financialyear a specific amountwould be budgeted forcharitable donations forthe year.

At a recent meeting ofthe Chaplaincy Council itwas agreed that as manycharities were strugglingbecause of the financialcrisis the Chaplaincywould make somedonations now. And theCouncil agreedunanimously, on thisoccasion, to supportCUDECA and CARITAS.And so, last week theChaplain, the VenerableDavid Sutch, and Mr JimMarshall presentedcheques for 1,250€ toCUDECA (pictured aboveright CUDECA – L to RJim Marshall, NataliaAparicio, Ven. DavidSutch) and to the branchof CARITAS (picturedbelow) in Los Boliches.

Ven. David said thatsome people might wonder

at the wisdom of givingmoney away when theChaplaincy, like manypeople and organisations,is struggling financially. But since Jesus said “it ismore blessed to give thanto receive” if we showfaithfulness in a God whogives us everything weneed, then our faith will berewarded and we will beblessed.”

The parishioners arealso supporting the workof CARITAS withdonations of non-perishable foodstuffs fordistribution to the needy ofthe area. If anyone wouldlike to contribute to thiswork donations in kind orcash may be brought to StAndrew’s Church anyWednesday morning.

The Sardinian Warbler isa bird found throughoutAndalucía, in a widerange of habitats, fromopen fields to privategardens, woodlands toreed beds and olive grovesto salt marshes. Despiteits almost omnipresentnature the shy Sardinian

Warbler is rarely seen, preferring to keep out ofsight and feeding in deepand dense cover. However, in the breedingseason the male bird ismore conspicuous, singingfrom open perches andperforming noisy flights ofdisplay.

The male bird, shownin both photographs, hasdark-grey upper partsand a jet black head witha bright red eye-ring. Theunder part is light greyand the throat white. Thefemale is not as colourfulwith a grey-brown upperpart, a greyish head andreddish eye ring. Herunder parts are buff andthe throat is also white. At this time of the yearthere are lots of juvenilebirds about and theirplumage is similar to thatof the female. Go towww.xeno-canto.org/135565 if youwish to listen to arecording of a SardinianWarbler’s song.

An adult bird is around14 centimetres in length, with a 16 centimetrewingspan and weighsabout 13 grams – lessthan the weight of agreetings card. They feedmainly on insects,

seasonal berries andseeds. It seems, the localsat least, are particularlyfond of pomegranateseeds. Hang half a cutpomegranate up in yourgarden and you will mostlikely receive a visit froma Sardinian Warbler.

A few SardinianWarblers do fly to Africafor the winter but themajority are resident, remaining in Andalucía.In February a pair willbuild a nest and duringthe breeding season thefemale will lay up to three

clutches of between threeto five eggs in the samenest. Incubation takesaround two weeks, fledging – when the youngbird develops the wingfeathers large enough forflight – takes aboutanother two weeks, thechicks becomeindependent two to threeweeks later. The parentsthen chase them from thebreeding territory so thatthey can get on with thenext clutch.

From the director of thehugely successfulBridesmaids, and starringliterally one of its biggeststars in the voluptuousshape of McCarthy, TheHeat is set to be one of thecomedy winners of theyear. Uptight FBI specialagent Sarah Ashburn(Bullock) teams up withcoarse foul-mouthedBoston cop ShannonMullins (McCarthy) andguess what? For thepurposes of the plot thetwo women loathe eachother on sight.

Ashburn is a prissyknow-it-all and hugely

disliked by everyone at theoffice while Mullins givesas good as she gets, overwhelms the guys bysheer force of personalityand litters the air withprofanities.

So no prizes for workingout that if this movie is torun its full length the twoprotagonists must becomebosom buddies as they joinforces to bring down aruthless drug baron (isthere any other sort?) It’sa formulaic plot seendozens of times starringguys and the dialogue iscrude and blowsy. But thisis McCarthy at her

Bridesmaids best, provingthat she is one of the bighitters in Hollywood, andBullock is on top form sothe chemistry between thetwo stars fairly crackles.

It’s won a lot of critical

acclaim for being one ofthe year’s genuinely funnymovies and Feig hasaccomplished what he didin Bridesmaids –demonstrating that he isthe director du jour forfemale actors.

MOVIES AND DVDS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 2013

MOVIE SPOTLIGHT By Amy Thomas

Iam so used to seeingMatthew McConaughey

on the Top Ten Hollywoodlists, cavorting on beaches, working out his pint-sizedbody and running throughthe surf whilst attemptingto swing his impossiblyshort, dinosaur type arms,it often slips my mind thathis is in fact an actor.

My previousconceptions of him

being nothing more than aHollywood ‘fluff’ playercompletely dissipatedwhen I accidently stumbledupon the 2011 movie “TheLincoln Lawyer” on the boxlast week.

McConaughey playsMick Haller, a defence

lawyer who has been hiredto represent an arrogant,over-privileged young manLouis Roulet (Ryan Phillipe)accused of battering aprostitute. It doesn’t takelong for Heller and hisresearcher Frank Levine(William H. Macy) to realisethat there is something“not quite right” about thiscase. Very soon, Roulet, confident in the ‘lawyer-client’ confidentialityclause, cockily not onlyadmits his guilt to Hallerbut also confesses to aprevious crime for whichHeller’s client, JesusMartinez, was sentenced tolife.

Here Heller becomes anAmerican anomaly – a

defence lawyer with aconscience – knowing thetruth, and yet having toaccept his legal limitations. The film is an intelligent, well paced thriller thatholds your attentionthroughout. The movierests squarely on MatthewMcConaughey’s shouldersas he appears in almostevery scene and he carriesit off admirably. Hisrelationship with themother of his daughter, ex-wife (Marisa Tomei) whoworks in the DA’s officegives us a personal insightinto Haller’s life withoutstooping to sentimentalityand also adds to the latertensions of the plot.

William H. Macy’s roleis, as they say, a small

but significant one, and wefeel for his unfortunate

fate, as we do for him in themajority of his roles. Thecharacter of Louis Roulet isone that makes you want totake him by the collar andsmack him upside his head,or perhaps it’s just RyanPhillipe that we want to dothat to!

If you enjoy a goodcourtroom drama, whose

ending is not a foregoneconclusion, then “TheLincoln Lawyer” isdefinitely worth a watch, and while we are on thesubject, there are a coupleof others that deserve amention, if you missedthem first time around.

“My Cousin Vinny” is amore light hearted

courtroom drama, but thedialogue is quick andpunchy with a brilliantperformance by Joe Pescias the unconventionallawyer. This film alsostarred Marisa Tomei whowon an academy award in1993.

Amuch more serious andsinister courtroom film

is the 1996 “Primal Fear”starring Richard Gere. Thisis the film in which EdwardNorton made his debutwith his role of the accused,a dual personality characterAaron Stampler / Roy. Thisastonishingly good moviehas shocking twists andturns right to the very endand is not easily forgotten.

And of course, my finalrecommendation is the

classic “A Few Good Men”.I have seen this filmcountless times butwhenever I catch it on theTV I cannot turn over thechannel! Tom Cruise, although not my favouriteactor plays a blinder as thelawyer and who can resistwatching Jack Nicholson’sfamous “You can’t handlethe truth!” speech againand again and again.

Any comments?email: [email protected]

This week you are likely to be a bit distracted, so this is one of those times whenyou need to make sure you pay close attention to the details, especially whensigning agreements or fulfilling promises. You could be feeling inner discomfortlike you are not making any progress at all, this is because of your ruler Marsbeing in Cancer which is stirring up the emotional waters. The reality is, yourmind is going through some much needed contemplation as you prepare to re-emerge with fiery desire like never before.

There are financial opportunities all around you, just make sure you get allagreements in writing, however on your side it is all about bringing that dealhome through proper planning and making those ideas a reality. Make sure youkeep your ears open and really listen to what others are asking for, instead ofjumping in and giving a lecture on something that does not apply. Socially youare as popular as ever and will be a magnetic beacon on an evening out.

Others are drawn towards you lately as they sense the confidence andconvictions within you. The more you slow down and plan your moves, thebetter the outcome will be. Your biggest challenge is remaining focused as ladyluck is with you and you need to accomplish as much as possible this week.Financial elements are looking up, especially by the weekend. Every decisionyou make now will dramatically alter the road ahead.

All kinds of breakthroughs can be made at this time, the kind that couldtransform your life entirely. The thing is, it is all about being in the game to win, therefore, you cannot allow anything to get in the way of your turning awayfrom faith or self confidence. You may have to deal with struggles or obstaclesbut this is a time loaded with potential and promise. So stick in there and donot be tempted to turn away at the last hurdle.

Whatever was bringing you down could turn itself around just like that, thereare better days ahead. It is like you have not been able to depend upon anyoneoutside of yourself for what you need. Every time you reached out, their handwas withdrawn. A change of heart will lead to things just falling into place andworking out in your favour. Many personal opportunities will appear.Open upto others and let nature take its course.

Not letting that fear of the unknown hold you back is the key. There is apersonal transformation occurring, one that allows you to relax and enjoy lifewithout worrying too much about the future. Others may feel threatened byyour general ease with life and see you growing in power and subtleinfluence. Maintain your standards and make sure whatever task you do isdone with as much precision as possible.

Life can be unpredictable and so can others around you, however, you canstill be rooted to a place you call home where you can escape from themadness of it all. Keep in mind this week that you cannot always judge theoutcomes by the events that are currently occurring. Be willing to adapt andtrust your gut instincts, they will guide you. Allow yourself to dream big -the world is your oyster and why shouldn’t it be?

If there ever was a time to get a bigger vision and a better hold on your life andon your path it would be now. You continue to gain in personal strength andpower and at the same time there is a growing sense of hidden awareness thatcan almost over-power your senses at times. Relationships are being redefinedand new close contacts are being formed. There is the possibility of some traveloccurring shortly.

Keep things simple and life will seem to flow with a lot more ease. Overcomplication can lead to confusion so when things seem hectic bring it backto the basics. You always do so much for others and most of the time othersare not aware because you make it all look so easy. However, this is your timeto call in favours and reap the rewards of your efforts, if you put in the hardwork there can be material rewards.

You are injected full of positive productivity, so keep the bigger picture in mindversus the daily events that consume so much of your time. There is a lot ofwork that needs to be done at this time, it is the things you take care of nowthat allow you the time to kick back and relax later on. Early next week is greatfor any social or romantic activities, attention will be coming your way, as yourpersonality shines bright.

You may be worrying a lot right now - but nothing is usually as bad at it seems. There are plenty of times when you may have feared the worst and somehow, the tides turn and you get a break. Someone you least expect is going to comethrough for you, others are seeing the same spark and looking at you fordirection and leadership and will support you in your ideals. Pay attention toyour diet and make sure you eating well, stress can take its toll.

You have a radar that is fierce and a lens that is clear this week and this givesyou an intuition that knows the way. Trust in who you are and all that you bringto the table, it is indispensible. Past experiences seem to come together andbecome of huge benefit to you, allowing you a fresh start from a stronger andwiser position. Others may need you to be around and you may need to lend alistening ear.

Dear Calvin,

I am about to hit 55and have always had longhair and now feel it istime to cut it short (on theadvice of many of myfriends who all have shorthair!). How do I decidewhat style will suit me?

Kathy, Fuengirola

Dear Kathy,

Just because all of yourfriends have short hair itdoesn't mean you have tofollow suit. Gone are thedays where we had todress or wear our hair ina certain way at a certainage. However, if youdecide a new style is foryou, here are a few tips tohelp you.

1. The shape of your

face plays a big part inchoosing a new style.

2. Look at yourlifestyle. How much timehave you spare to do yourhair? Are you prepared toblow dry each time, or doyou want something youcan wash and leave?

3. Choose a style that isaway from your face asthis gives us the illusionof lifting the face.

4. Leave softness in theneck, going to short can bequite harsh.

5. If you want to callme on the number belowand come in to see me at"Calvin's Hair Studio" Iam very happy to do a freeconsultation and adviseyou on what would be bestfor you as it is much

easier if I can see you inperson.

Dear Calvin,

I have seen yourecommend "Paul MitchellForever Blonde". I haveblonde hair that iscoloured but after a fewdays it has faded. I’ve seenadverts on tv for ashampoo with violet in it.Does this work? Wherecan I buy it in Spain?

Lillian, Bexleyheath andRio Frio

Dear Lillian,

Blonde hair fading(and yellowing) is aconstant problem here inSpain. "Paul Mitchell" hasa violet shampoo. Violetneutralizes the yellow inthe hair as it is at theopposite end of the colourspectrum. They also havea "Forever Blonde"shampoo and conditionerwhich helps keep yourblonde vibrant and helpsstop fading. Another goodtip is to remember to keepyour hair covered from thesun whenever possible. I stock the "Paul

Mitchell" range so please

feel free to come and seeme.

Dear Sue,

Whenever I have amanicure to paint mynails they start to lookshabby after a couple ofdays. I have beenrecommended by a friendto have "shellac" put onthem to keep them lookinggood for a few days longer, but somebody else told methese are false nails. Idon't want to ruin mynails. What should I do?

Wynn, Rio Grande

Dear Wynn,

Yes your friend whosays "shellac" is a falsenail is quite correct. It is aform of gel nail that has tobe cured under a uv light. The process itself is not tooharsh on the nail. It is, asalways with false nails, the removal that provesthe problem for thenatural nail.

I don't provide thisservice in the salon forthat reason, howeverCND/Creative that makeshellac introduced a range

in May 2013 in Spaincalled "Vinylux-the weeklymanicure". They haveintroduced 62 colours forthis as opposed to 42 forshellac and so far all of myclients are very happy withthe durability of thisrange.

As it lasts so long it isimportant to sterilise thenail prior to applicationand always use a goodconditioning nail oil toprevent the nail dryingout.

Dear Sue,

I see on sun productsan SPF factor, what doesthis mean? And why dothey vary so much fromfactor 2 to 50?

Sarah, Mijas Costa

Dear Sarah,

I fully understand howconfusing all thesenumbers are. Firstly, inthe same way as UK andEurope have different shoeand clothes sizes, Europeand USA have differentnumbers with SPF. This iswhy many sun creamshave two numbers on

them. The USA has alower number thanEurope. SPF stands for"sun protection factor" so aEuropean SPF 20 meansyou can stay in the sun 20times longer than it wouldtake for you to burn andget sun damage thanwithout. This doesn'taffect the skin's ability totan.

In my opinion the bestsun protectors containtitanium dioxide whichliterally forms a barrieragainst the sun’s rays.

The range of numbers isan indication of how longyou may stay in the sun,but anyone who knows mewill tell you that Britishskins are not designed forthese hot temperatures souse the highest protectionyou can.

Many of the goodranges contain day creamsin their SPF creams whichsave time and will help toprevent skin cancer.

I would like to thankCaroline for phoning mewith a question this weekregarding skin peeling. This is something that Ihope to cover later nextmonth as it isn'tsomething we can cover inthe summer.

Thanks to Kym forputting our phonenumbers in below. Soif you don't have time toemail Calvin([email protected])or me([email protected] keep the phonecalls coming.

If you have anyquestions for Calvin orSue, you can contact themon 633 733 374 (Calvin) or952 473 681 (Sue).

Fish fingers and custard maynot sound like a good choice fordinner but the outgoing Dr.Who, Matt Smith, seemed tolike it well enough.

Announced on BBC TV, a firstin itself, was the actor who willplay the twelfth – and possiblylast as they say they will not behaving a number 13 – version ofone of the world’s most famousdoctors.

Glaswegian Peter Capaldi, atage 55 is one of the oldest toplay Dr. Who – the same age asthe first Dr. Who WilliamHartnell was in 1963 – followingMatt who was the youngestdoctor of all.

I can distinctly remember loving

the show when it first started. My younger brother hated it,always ending up hiding behindthe sofa being terrified ofwhatever ghastly enemy he wascoming up against at the timebut, turn it off.... not a chance!

Capaldi is expected to make therôle his own in fairly shortshrift. The man is the onlyDoctor so far to have an Oscarunder his belt and has been anaccomplished actor for years. One of his latest parts was asthe foul-mouthed spin-doctorMalcolm Tucker in the BBCseries The Thick of It.

However, it is not the first timeCapaldi has appeared on theshow – he played Romanmerchant Caecilius in 2008

Doctor Who adventure TheFires of Pompeii.

To put you all out of your miseryand stop you having sleeplessnights trying to remember them, all the 12 Doctors so far are:

1. William Hartnell (1963-1966)2. Patrick Troughton (1966-1969)3. Jon Pertwee (1970-1974)4. Tom Baker (1974-1981)5. Peter Davison (1982-1984)6. Colin Baker (1984-1986)7. Sylvester McCoy (1987-1996)8. Paul McGann (1996)9. Christopher Eccleston (2005)10. David Tennant (2005-2010)11. Matt Smith (2010 - 2013)12. Peter Capaldi (2013 - )

Everybody was wondering who the new Who was going to be with lots of speculation but

… and remarks on social sites are about equal for whether or not he’s a good choice.

Ashootingstar,falling

star or meteoris caused whena piece ofspace rock thatis happilyhangingaround inspace happensto strike theEarth’s upperatmosphere. Then, becauseit can be travelling at up to 20,000mph,the friction of the air causes the rock toburn up causing a brief streak of lightacross the sky, lasting only a second ortwo.

Most meteors are tiny, around thesize of a grain of sand. But if thespace rock is bigger, perhaps

the size of a house brick, then it cancreate a spectacularly bright fireball asit burns up. If the meteor is big enoughto survive the journey through theatmosphere and eventually land on theground then it is known as a meteorite.

You may remember in Februarythis year when a spectacularfireball was seen zooming across

the skies of Russia. This meteor wasestimated to be around 20 metres indiameter, weighing more than the Eiffeltower and travelling at over 41,000mph! The resulting blast wave as itexploded 14 miles up in the sky causedwidespread damage and injured around1500 people.

Most meteors, however, are quiteharmless, and if you spend longenough outside on any given

night then you are almost guaranteed tosee at least one meteor. But at certaintimes of the year the Earth passesthrough the debris left over from acomet tail. The collective grouping of thetiny particles can cause a meteorshower and in some cases even a meteorstorm.

Every year around mid August theEarth passes through the debrisleft behind by a comet called

Swift-Tuttle. Swift-Tuttle orbits the Sunonce every 133 years. The last time itwas in our area was back in 1992; it isnot due to return again until 2126. Buteach time that the comet has visited theinner solar system its path was almostidentical and the debris from its tail liesright across the Earth’s orbit. So as wepass through the litter of tiny particlesand sweep them up they create thePerseid meteor shower.

At their peak the Perseids cannumber 200 meteors an hourshooting across the sky. In past

years when we have struck a

particularly dense area the number hasgone up to hundreds of meteors perminute causing a meteor storm. In 1972some parts of the world reported seeingmeteors ‘falling like hailstones’ from thesky.

The Perseids have been observedfor over 2000 years and in somecountries they are referred to as

‘The Tears of Saint Lawrence’. August10th is the day of St. Lawrence who wasput to death by the Romans. It is saidthat he was slowly burned to death overhot coals, and after suffering for sometime he is reputed to have cried out ‘I’mdone this side, please turn me over’!

Patience is the key word withmeteor spotting, it’s no use juststicking your head out of the

window during the adverts on TV. Youreally need around 15–20 minutesoutside in the dark to allow your eyes tobecome dark adapted as most of themeteors are very faint indeed.

You don’t need any specialequipment to see the Perseids, simply find a very dark, safe area

far away from street lights then witheither a deck chair or sun lounger (anda glass of wine) lie back, look up andenjoy the show. The meteors will createvery fine almost gossamer like trialsalmost anywhere in the sky but if youfollow an imaginary line backwards youwill find that they all seem to originatefrom the constellation of Perseus, hencethe name Perseid. I have alwaysfavoured looking about half way up thesky toward the Northeast.

The nights of 11th to 13th of Augustare predicted to be the best timeswith around midnight on Monday

12th being the maximum. Because theMoon will be in an early crescent phasethis year then it will set quite early inthe evening and not block out any of thefainter meteors.

And if you do spot a shooting starbe sure to make a wish as theyalways come true!

Happy Stargazing.

Catch a Falling Star!If you’ve never seen a shooting star then thisweekend will be your perfect opportunity.

Is Spain institutionallycorrupt? It is very difficult with allthe evidence in recentyears not to agree thatSpain and its peoplesespecially those who gainsome political power, areprone to automaticallycheat all others where theythink they can get awaywith it. We all know aboutthe developers bribingwilling local councillors toissue licences for buildingon restricted or legallybanned lands, but whatabout all the Spanishlawyers who willinglyprocessed the sales, bothfor the sellers and thebuyers? I have askedseveral lawyers if whenthey graduated for theCollegio de Abogados(lawyers school) if they

swore an oath to obey thelaws without fear orfavour? All replied “Ofcourse. We had to.” Sowhy have none beensanctioned for processingthe illegal salestransactions? They cannotuse the excuse that theseller had a licencebecause it is the lawyers’professional duty to checkthat the sale is legalDid some say that the salemay be illegal despite thelicence being granted andthere will most likely be asmall fine to pay and thecost of this fine is built intothe selling price so do notworry?” It would appearthat some did, so they arereally corrupt crooks inmost people’s minds andshould also be liable forpaying reparations to

buyers where a house hassubsequently been pulleddown.I have had my “ISSUE”with a Spanish lawyer (itis still ongoing after 4years) where I was givenbad advice and lack ofservice. I believe thatlawyers now should onlybe paid when the action isfully completed. After allthey always demandpayment up front.Thought for the week. When I was young, awoman would reach intoher handbag, take out acompact and proceed to pather face. Today they reachin and take out a device(smartphone) which theythen proceed to stab withtheir fingers. How timeshave changed.

Opinion Comment&

We all seem to have thewrong impression of theWinter Fuel Allowance(WFA).This is NOT an automaticright for us pensioners.Initially it was a “gift”by the incumbentgovernment of the timethat decided it wouldprovide a sum of money tohelp pensioners with theirheating bills – within theUK. It was not designedfor all British people wholived in other countriesthroughout the world. It had absolutely nothingto do with whether onehad paid income tax,

national insurance tax orany other tax. We have allpaid these taxes but thishas nothing to do withbeing eligible for receivingthe WFA.It may well be cold attimes in Spain, although itmost certainly does not getanywhere near as cold asin the UK, but, forwhatever reason, I diddecide to leave the UK andlive in this country. The fact that I have servedin the forces, am short ofmoney and am havingsome difficulties livinghere, is totally beside thepoint. I do not have an

automatic right to receivethis WFA.I am most definitelyentitled to my pension as Ihave paid into this overmany years, but, as I havejust said, this does notentitle me to the gift of theWFA.Now I am living in Spain,I see no reason why Ishould expect the UKgovernment to support mefinancially, other than forwhat I am entitled to.Maybe the Spanish wouldlike to receive a WFA?But why should they, theyare used to the Spanishweather !

Over the last few weeksCoin seems have beensubjected to anunacceptable level ofmotor cycle noise at alltimes of the day and nightby young men roaringthrough town on theirinadequately silencedmotor bikes and scooters. Not only is this situationcreating an unbearableracket but it is highlydangerous, and someonewill get killed if the localpolice continue to ignorethe practice. At times the town appearsto be little more than aracetrack for a smallminority of selfishmotorcyclists with

virtually no chance ofthem being apprehendedby the authorities. While not wanting toappear a "killjoy" I do feelthat one should be entitledto sit at a pavement café orlie in bed without thisconstant ear splittingnoise breaking the peaceand tranquillity which Ibelieve we are all entitledto enjoy. I sincerely hopethat this situation is dealtwith urgently before thesummer is over.

Editor says: It must be oneof the most annoyingnoises on the planet and,as you say, little is doneabout it here.

The deal gives Crutchlow, who has had four podiumfinishes for Yamaha'ssatellite team Tech 3 thisyear, a MotoGP factoryride for the first time.

Crutchlow joins Ducati, replacing 2006 worldchampion Nicky Haydenand re-forming hispartnership with formerTech 3 team-mate AndreaDovizioso. There areonly three full factoryteams in MotoGP – atDucati, Yamaha andRepsol Honda – andeach has two riders. Both Jorge Lorenzoand Valentino Rossihave contracts withYamaha that run until2015, while Repsol Hondahave Spaniards MarcMarquez and DaniPedrosa signed up. Riderssigned to factory teamsbenefit from updates andhigher spec machinerybefore their rivals in otheroutfits, who lease theirbikes from the factories.

Back in May,Crutchlow revealed thatYamaha were in talkswith Moto2 riderEspargaro for a Tech 3ride in 2014, expressingfrustration at not beingoffered the same package, and with Bradley Smithunder contract with thesatellite team for 2014, itlooked as thoughCrutchlow would be leftwithout a ride in 2014.Yamaha, though, werekeen for the Isle of Manstar, who has finished asthe top satellite rider inall but two races this year,to stay with the Tech 3team.

It is well documentedthat Ducati havestruggled in recentseasons and have not wona race since Casey Stonertook victory at theAustralian Grand Prix in2010. Seven-time MotoGPchampion Rossi had atwo-year spell with Ducatibut managed only threepodiums, eventuallyrejoining Yamaha thisyear. The Audi takeoverof Ducati has promptedbig changes in themanagerial side of theMotoGP project, but theystill remain without asingle podium in 2013.

Ducati Corse generalmanager BernhardGobmeier said they havea two-year project to getDucati back to acompetitive level.

Steve Parrish, MotoGPBBC commentatorbelieves that Crutchlowhas made the rightdecision saying “I don'tthink Yamaha saw his

potential.Theydidn'tdo averygood

job of trying to keep him.He has probably spoken tolots of people who courtedhim in much betterfashion. Tech 3 negotiatedwith Spanish Moto2 riderPol Espargaro, who willreplace Cal next year, at apoint when they shouldhave been talking to Cal –I think that upset him”.

“Cal is not daft andknows Ducati hasn't beenthe easiest bike to ride.People will think that ifValentino Rossi, who only

managed two podiums intwo years with the team, couldn't sort it out, whatchance does Cal have? But Cal rides the bike

differently.We

shouldn't forget, too, thatCasey Stoner won a lot ofraces on it including achampionship in 2007 – soit's not impossible to ride.”

Crutchlow opts for DucatiCal Crutchlow has signed a two-year deal to ride for Ducati from next year.

Crutchlow with soon-to-be-teammate-again Dovizioso

Kenny Sansom was onThursday night in the careof the ProfessionalFootballers’ Associationafter revelations that hewas homeless, pennilessand losing the fight againsthis addictions to gamblingand alcohol. “We’ve beenlooking after Kenny not fortwo weeks or two monthsbut for several yearsregarding his rehab,” saidPFA deputy chief executiveBobby Barnes. “He has been constantly

in a programme where he iscounselled and looked afterby our psychologists fromthe Sporting Chance clinic

on an out-patient basis. Wehave been paying for hisaccommodation for quite atime and one thing Kennyknows is we will never turnour backs on him.”Arsenal say they are also

giving support and guidanceto their former Englandfullback "We are aware ofKenny Sansom's situationand have been providinghim with ongoing supportand guidance," said anArsenal spokesperson. Sansom spent eight

years with Arsenal, playingin 314 matches. Sansom said: "I am in a

bad way. Arsenal are tryingto help me, but I have got totry to help myself." The 54-year-old, who is the secondmost capped England full-back in history behindAshley Cole, is reported to

have been living on thestreets and spending histime drinking andgambling. He made his professional

football debut for CrystalPalace when he was 16before moving to Arsenal, where he won the LeagueCup in 1987. Sansom leftthe club in 1988, afterfalling out of favour, forNewcastle. He also hadstints at Queens ParkRangers, Coventry,Everton, Brentford andWatford before retiring in1995. Time and again we hear

of footballers who arehooked on gambling anddrink, and the outcome isusually not good. One ofEngland’s best defendershas his biggest challengeahead ... good luck Kenny!

The best thing any pokerplayer can see is hitting amonster or the stone coldnuts on the flop. We thenhave to think how do I getthe other player(s) to payme off. Did we raise pre flopwith a premium hand or didwe raise light in lateposition, set mining orlimping with connectors? These factors will come intoplay here. If you raised witha premium hand it will notbe hard for them to put youon a big hand. If you haveraised with junk and hit big,bet every street. If you getaction as it would be difficultfor them to put you on thehand as you raised pre and,of course, if you had missedyou can now represent theA.

Let’s say we are in earlyposition with AQ so we raise3X the BB. We get a lateposition call and the BBcomes along for the ride ashe has value to call. The flopcomes AQQ, we need toappear weak to keep at leastone of the players in the pot.Should we could check orbet?

This is when takingnotes on the other playercomes into it's own. Are theytight, loose or better stillover aggressive? With thelatter I would check, hopinghe bets. With the tight andloose player I would betaround 1/3 pot. Should thetight player have anything,he will call and raise with aQ giving us the action we

want but if he has missed hewon't put a cent into the pot.The loose player will call asa dangerous board does notworry them, he is hoping hecan bluff the river with anover-sized bet which is asure sign of a weak handwith this board. With theloose player I would bet theflop and turn and check theriver giving him a chance tobluff – then we can comeover the top with a pot sizebet. Bluffing is part of pokerand if you’re going to bluffmake sure the story addsup, unlike TV poker whichis edited clips of just theaction hands becausefolding round to the BB isnot good TV.

Simple rules to followwhen bluffing – do not tryand represent the A if youhave not raised pre flop, ifyou’re going to represent aflush make sure you havebet the flush draw. Youneed to make your bet bigenough to make them fold.Too small they have value tocall, too large it makes themsmell a rat because whywould you bet so big if youhad the nuts? I often seeplayers shoving all in on theflop with a bluff. Why riskyour stack? You’re onlygoing to get called by a handthat beats you. Betting thepot is fine because if he doesnot believe you on a pot sizebet there is less chance hewill with a shove..... becausea shove does not make senseif you have the nuts!

England retained The Ashes by drawing the third Test as rainput an end to Australia's push for final day victory. Australia were in acommanding position, having removed AlastairCook, Jonathan Trott andKevin Pietersen to reduceEngland to 37-3 in pursuitof an unlikely target of332. But recurringshowers prevented anyresumption of acompelling contest after

14:03 BST, and thecaptains shook hands on adraw at 16:40. The resultgives England anunassailable 2-0 lead withtwo Tests to play in thefive-match series andensures they will keephold of the urn, havingtriumphed in the past twoseries.

England need to drawonly one of the remainingtwo Tests to win theseries and underline theirrecent domination of oneof sport's oldest contests.

Australia, who woneight consecutive Ashesseries between 1989 and2002-03, will be hoping to

salvage a draw from theseries before the returncontest down under, starting in November.

Pietersen’s dismissalreopened the can ofworms that is theDecision Review Systemafter he was given out oneight after edging, or

perhaps not, Peter Siddlebehind. DRS has been adisaster during this seriesand there have beenproblems with it almoston a daily basis.

Central to the problemis HotSpot – the infra-red,heat-seeking technologywhich is meant to detectedges. It has been plain tosee neither the playersnor umpires trust it andPietersen’s dismissal hasalmost certainly signed itsdeath warrant.

The 33-year-old, whoscored a first-inningscentury here, reviewedthe call made by on-fieldumpire Tony Hill anddespite HotSpot showingno contact between batand ball, third umpireKumar Dharmasena didnot overturn the decision.

Snicko later showed afaint edge and the soonera real-time version of thesound-based system isrolled out the better.Hopes are it will beavailable for the returnseries this winter.
