Every once and awhile we get access to some exciting ex-periences that transport us back to our childhood imagina-tion. Such was the case ... In the Region of Newell

Many people often ask, “What does the region have to offer?” In short, my response is always “One of the great-est adventures to be found in Alberta. Period.”

During the summer of 2012, the Newell Regional Tourism Association was contacted by producer Jim Hoey or the Dimestore Fishermen, with the potential of creating an episode about this region. Immediately, thought went right to the story we wanted to tell. After filming all summer, Jim had an amazing amount of film and one of the best stories that could be told from this region. More than telling a story, it’s about telling a story that paints the region in a new light; something com-pletely different, and from another person’s perspective. We often forget that by living here, we become oblivi-ous to some of the most fascinating and wonderful places in Alberta.

show, the NRTA took the crew to the Elks Father’s Day Fishing Derby, and Brooks Medieval Faire. The NRTA also took them to UNESCO World Heritage Site Dinosaur Provincial Park, the Bas-sano Dam, Brooks Aqueduct, and EID Historical Park.

Along the way, Jim had the chance to fight the Black Knight, unearth a Di-nosaur, and help in the production of Honey at the EID Historical Park. There was even a pit stop for a Brooks Sand-wich. When it was time for fishing, both Lake Newell and Crawling Valley

Reservoir were selected. Crawling Valley was a hit with the help of local fishermen Ken Andrejian. With his assistance, Jim and Cal caught many Walleye in the five hours on the water. With line after line hammered by the fish at the res-ervoir, it made for a compelling ending to the first episode. Currently, the NRTA has begun working with the Dimestore Fishermen for episode two which will showcase the regions river ways and the mostly unknown fly fishing spots. Among other activities are comfort camping at Dinosaur Provincial Park and a trip to Blackfoot Crossing Historcial Park.

Only through the eyes of another can we truly appreciate what we have at home. What we take for granted is a story that speaks to the hearts and minds of other Albertans, Ca-nadians, and peoples from all over the planet. Jim and this episode have taken to tell this story to the world, and the story they are about to tell provides a window to the very heart of the Region of Newell. Will the world take notice and stop by for a visit?

Summer brings about a great season for outdoor activity and water sports. Newell is fortunate to have one of the best lakes in Alberta for this very water occasion. Lake Newell is the heart of the region and is the hidden gem of the sports activities of the region. Mostly unnoticed, the lake has a particular fame for the winds and ideal sailing conditions, and the Dragon Boat Racing that regularly takes place in July. It seems as though this year will be the biggest and best summer on Lake Newell as the lake plays host to SailWest, the largest sailboat competition in western Canada, and a bigger, better Dragon Boat Festival.

Summer On Lake Newell A true gem of Newell and also the best sailing lake in South-ern Alberta! The water is clean and warm. There are no high banks or trees disturbing the prairie winds, they are true and free. The lake is big enough to sail for a relaxing time before you have to change direction. Most people head west to the mountains and British Colombia for recreation so they miss the “oasis” at Lake Newell. Undeniably a prairie treasure, the sunsets are spectacular and one of the best in Southern Al-berta!

The Newell Sailing Club (NSC) is a grass roots community oriented club. Located on the shores of Lake Newell, it offers

sailing, kayaking and windsurfing activities. Mix in a social atmosphere and this makes for a perfect environment to enjoy the fabulous venue that Lake Newell is! This year we have been asked by Sail Canada to host the CYA SailWest Championship.

The “CYA SailWest Championship” is the largest western Ca-nadian sailing event of the year. Each year the four western provinces take turns hosting this event. In recent history only Wabumun Sailing Club and Calgary Yacht Club have hosted it. This opportunity will allow Newell Sailing Club to showcase our lake, club and our local junior sailors. The local


junior sailors will be competing in this event. This occasion will help raise the profile of sailing in the Region of Newell. We would also like to create opportunities for volunteers to help with this exciting regional event. The event is com-posed of 2 days of training, where the provincial coaches share the coaching duties and all sailors train together with others in their fleets. Then, 2 days of exciting racing, where the SailWest Championships, U17 championships, Open Western Championship and Western Canadian La-ser Masters Championships are decided. Sail Canada pro-vides guest judges and race officers as well as assistance in the various aspects of regatta and race management. This is a great opportunity for NSC members to learn new ways to run regattas and for local people to learn about the excitement of sailing.

From July 10th we will see sailors; parents and guests ar-rive from the four Western provinces. Montana clubs often make an appearance at Alberta events as well. The CYA SailWest Championship is being hosted as part of our an-nual Newell Sailing Club’ “Prairie Wind Regatta”. This event will stand out in the same way as our annual Prairie Wind Regatta, with a relaxed setting, a beautiful lake, home-style food and friendly rural hospitality. We welcome any-one who is interested in participating, volunteering or just visiting during this week of activities.

History of Lake Newell Dragon Boat Races

The Brooks Dragon Boat Festival was started by the Lake Newell Adventu-res Getaway Society. Last year there was a partnership with the Brooks Ro-tary Club, and this year Rotary Club is now running the event. The Battle of the Paddles Challenge is being run to encourage teams throughout Alberta to enter the event and participate in semi competitive racing. This year, the Dragon Boat races take place July 13-14th at Lake Newell Resort located at the northern tip of Lake Newell. There were a number of teams who came down to a photo finish in more than a few heats. Will you and your team take the gold? Will you be able to tell your friends that you participated in the Ro-tary Dragon Boat Races?

Is there anything special at the Dragon Boat Festival this year?

There has been a lot of planning this year into the possibilities of the festi-val. This year it is planned that beer gardens, entertainment, food vendors, and much more will be part of the event. Along with competition of the sport, people will have the opportu-nity to camp (while space permits) as well as enjoy the common areas of the competition with the other teams.

This year’s Dragon Boat festival will be bigger than the last. Its also close to Kinbrook Island Provincial Park, so it’s a great place to get involved with the activities of the Newell Sailing Clubs SailWest Prairie Wind Regatta.

Are there any Prizes ?

There are a number of prizes for ente-ring the event. There are prizes for Best Team Costume, Best Team Spirit, and Best Chant. With these prizes and the satisfaction of knowing that you can still compete with the other teams, it should be an exciting event.

hat started as simple fun has actively evol-ved into a region specific philosophy. When trave-lers or recreation enthusiasts think of recreation opportunities, they typically think of the Mounta-ins as being one of the greatest adventures. While this might be true, Newell is fortunate enough to have some of the best recreation opportunities in Alberta. This allows the Region to actively promo-te our philosophy of Re-Newell.

Now you might be asking yourself, “What is this Re-Newell nonsense?” I assure you that Re-Newell is a region specific concept. Water Sports, Wind Sailing, Sailing, Golfing, Comfort Camping, Horse Back Riding, Camping, Outdoor Motocross, Moun-tain Biking (or Coulee Biking), Rodeo, and a host of other activities are unique concepts that we have developed in our region. These activities, while they can be found anywhere else, are unique to our region because of the attributes of our region. For instance, Windsailing and Sailing are possible

on any lake in Alberta; however, Lake Newell is one of the cleanest, warmest, fastest lakes in Al-berta for this sport. Now won’t that intrigue the avid water sports enthusiast? What about pilots? Did you know that Lake Newell is one of the few lakes that you could land a pontoon plane in?

This is the concept that we are beginning to see emerge. There are many hidden facts throughout the region that are slowly creating an adventure. Many vacationers are trying to get away from the static structure of life. Being so close to Calgary, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, we have 20 camp-grounds, 5 golf courses, 3 major recreation lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and so much more. We would hope that these vacationers come to relax and enjoy the stress free environment of our region, so appropriately called a “Renewal of Spirit”. With so many opportunities arising in the Region of Newell, we could only appropriately call these Renewal Activities a “Re-Newell Adventure”.

What is a Re-Newell Adventure?

A Re-Newell adventure is an adventu-re that you can only experience here in the Region of Newell. It can be a structured, non-structured, guided, or non-guided experience. It’s an expe-rience that is unique to this area, and something that you can boast about. Whether it’s the grilling of your steak to perfection at the original Steak Pit at the Patricia Hotel, catching a mons-ter Walleye or Northern Pike in one of the many Lakes, the paleontological unearthing of a Dinosaur, or living it up at one of the many campsites around the region, every story is different, unique, and most importantly, a story about Re-Newell. Whatever the size of the adventure, the scale of the activi-ties, or the company of your compa-nions, you can be sure that a Re-Newell Adventure is exactly the outing that you are looking for.

Who is a Re-Newell Adventure for?

Re-Newell is more than just a visitor concept. Re-Newell is also a concept that every resident of the area lives with every day. As residents of the re-gion, we share in some of the most uni-que experiences that the region has to offer every day. We can fish and swim every day in the summer, walk on some of the most beautiful paths around the region, and enjoy the wide open space for our everyday activities. Each of the-se activities helps create stories, and local stories create the heart and soul of our communities. We are fortunate to have so many opportunities in the region to enjoy and create such a close community culture..

While this concept may just be an ideology, it seems to return to a simpler, more fun way of living life. The region of Newell is fortu-nate enough to have a strong, vi-brant economy which employs a number of diverse peoples from all over the planet. Often, we find locals leaving the area for recrea-tion activities in other places. I of-ten question the reason as to why our residents would leave such wonderful attractions and oppor-tunities in search of greener pas-tures elsewhere. Maybe it’s a men-tality of “where I work, I can’t play”. Maybe it’s for reasons completely unknown to me and for reasons I’ll never completely know. I can only pose a question to all, “Have you experienced true Re-Newell yet? If you have, what was it?”

Re-Newell Activities, does seem to be catching on. More people are starting to look for opportu-nities in the region where they too might be able to have an in-credible story. These stories might be action packed, personal and emotional, fun and relaxed, or any combination of significant oppor-tunities.

gion of Newell has plentiful water-ways and enjoyable summer activi-ties. This dam diverts water from the Bow River located just outside of the Town of Bassano. A great little get-away spot for an afternoon out with the family or just some downtime, this location offers a great view of scenery

01Built by the Eastern Ir-rigation District for sup-

plying irrigation to farmers of the region, this lake serves as the regions premier attraction. This lake is the warmest, fastest manmade lake in all of Alberta. Kinbrook Island features many opportunities such as camp-ing, swimming, and boat launch-ing for water activities. You may also ask what a fast lake is. Why don’t you bring a sailboat, or go windsurfing to find out how fast the lake really is.

04Like a giant centipede, the Brooks Aqueduct spans a shal-

low 3.2 km wide valley, suspending a con-crete sling twenty metres above the parched prairie landscape. Once filled to overflow-ing with precious water bound for the thirsty croplands of southwestern Alberta, today it holds only memories. Interpretive guides offer site tours and public programs throughout the summer, visitor season.

of Newell. We are blessed with two museums, The Brooks & District Mu-seum, and the EID Historical Park.

Carl’s Way is a film being produ-ced by Smoke Signal Media in Rosebud, AB and Bee All You Can Bee Committee representing the community of Scandia. The film tells the story of Carl Anderson (a Scandia pioneer) who successfu-lly negotiated one of the most spectacular real estate transac-tions in the history of Canada and was instrumental in the creation of the once doomed and now flourishing Eastern Irrigations

District (EID).

There will be a 15 minute audition held at the CPR Station in the EID Historical Park on June 8th. There will then be a call back for a se-cond audition June 22nd. Actual shooting of the film will begin in August 2013 and there will be a possible honorarium for some of the characters’ portrayals. ur first newsletter. I ask myself what informa-tion would people want to read about the Brooks Medieval Faire, a bit of history, a bit

about the growth of the Faire, a bit about plans for the 10th year in 2013. Here goes…hope you find it infor-mative.

The Brooks Medieval Faire was started in 2003 by the Brooks Public Library, as family fun afternoon in the park. At that time the Faire was held in Evergreen Park just outside the library building. People came in costume, walked around the park, enjoyed the re-enactment shows of sword fighting, possibly learned a new-to-them craft such as weaving or pottery, admired the custom sewn costumes and visited with friends and neighbors while enjoying a sunny, warm day.

The Brooks Library board found the time spent on the Faire beca-me too much for them to continue so looked for and found a local community group to take it over. Some of the people that would eventually form the Brooks Medieval Fai-re Society worked with the library in 2009 to learn the ropes. The Library continues to help out to this day,

oalthough’ in a much smaller capacity then when they planned the whole Faire themselves. 2010 saw the Faire move to the

Old Rodeo Grounds on 7th street particu-larly suited to the Medieval Faire with the mature trees and grassy areas. We were able to incorporate jousting into the Fai-re as the main attraction, (horses were not allowed in Evergreen). 2011 was the first 2 day, weekend Faire. We decided to plan a 2 day event for various reasons. We were able to have some new and unique vendors who said a 1 day event wasn’t worth coming for. The re-enactment societies could bring and set-up more of their pavilions and wares at a 2 day event. Whatever the reasons, it was a success! 2012 saw another successful 2 day Brooks Medieval Faire with some new enter-tainers, marketplace vendors, and the Feast

held on the grounds. We are always looking for new entertai-ners and vendors with a medieval theme.

the biggest yet! An Interna-tional Invitational Jousting Tournament, Family Frien-dly games and activities,

entertainment, and much more! There is absolutely

nothing like this in Alberta, and we are pretty sure you won’t find anything quite like it in Western Canada.

Period.”


Now that you are all caught up, on to 2013, the 10th annual Brooks Medieval Faire. The Annual Medicine Hat and District Highland Dance Competition will be held on Saturday at the Faire. An International Invitational Jousting Tournament will be held both days. We have some of our favorite market-place vendors from past years and are adding some new ones sure to be new favorites. SaFire Dance will be back to dazzle us with their juggling, stilt-walking and fire dancing. We continue to work on bringing some more new entertainers and activities to the 10th annual Brooks Medieval Faire. We must thank the Society of Tilt and Lance Cavalry (STALC) for the awesome jousting shows they have put on for us for the last few years and for Lady Radar’s help in using her contacts in the jousting world to help us set-up the International Invitational Jousting Tournament for the 10th annual Brooks Medieval Faire. The Medieval Faire is proud to bring you an authentic medieval experience (without the time machine). Many of the Knights and exhibitors enjoy this event in charac-ter. Will you join them in costume during the weekend?

Each section of the grounds are designed to teleport you to a simpler time where chivalry and honour were commonplace. You will be able to find amazing hand-crafted goods, and watch as traditional techniques are used in the Village Blacksmith.

Relive the Past in the Living Village

Towering metal clad warrior’s dual with real weapons and real armour for the amusement of the crowd. What are they fighting for? Honour? Glory? Money? Watch as these no-bles fight for the pleasure of the crowd.

”One of the Oldest Traditions in the Region of Newell”

he Brooks Rodeo is one of the biggest events in Brooks all year. It has a beer gardens, tons of rides and games to play and an actual rodeo during the day. Other Highlights are the Mini Chucks for Charity which takes place this year June 7th at 4:00pm in the Canadian Tire Parking Lot.

Other traditions that take place are the Karaoke Finals. The radio stations have been having a karaoke contest for the past few weeks and now the finalists compete at the Rodeo in the Beer Gardens. Top prize is $500.00 with a second prize of $250.00
