New York Cares

Have you ever felt like your community needed a little more of this and that, in other words, improvement? This is your chance to make a difference. New York Cares is an organization solely for the good of the community and its people. Here you get together with people your age or older to come up with a plan to help your community or any other community to bring out their best qualities. Whether it is picking up garbage, painting murals, or even playing bingo with seniors at a senior center, there are so many ways to help. But you do not have to look only in NYC, you can also go to your community center in your community. Remember, be the change you want to see in the world.

My name is Julaury Varlack and I am a teen leader at New World High School’s community service program and New York Cares. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me or any of the people below.

Who is going to be the winner of $5,000 for their non-profit organization?

Last year, New World High School partnered with YPI (Youth Philanthropy Initiative), an important organization that has created a new experience for students, where we can explore and talk about problems and obstacles that we have in our community. The YPI organization helps high school students to make a difference in society by representing a charitable organization.

On Friday, February 17, 2012, New World High School students started their 1st YPI poster presentations. The presentations will continue on until March 30th when all groups will present the work they have done for their organizations. On this day, all teachers, staff, and parents are welcome to come during periods 3, 4, and 5 to view the presentations in the school’s gymnasium.

Each class will have two winning groups that will go to the final competition on April 30th. Expectations are set very high because as you know, everyone wants to make a difference in society and most of all help their non-profit organization (charity) win the $5,000 grant.

Good luck to all the participants!!!

I want to remind you that New World High School’s Multicultural Show is coming soon. It’s going to be on March 22nd. I have been participating in the shows for 4 years now. The first time I participated was in 2009. I won first place for the talent show in singing and I received a gift card and a certificate. I was so excited but nervous at the same time. When I heard my name I was in shock. I could not believe it. I believed in my talent, but I was not sure that I was going to win since there were a lot of people participating and they all were talented.

If you have not heard about the multicultural show before, I will tell you more about some of the details. It is a show about your tradition and the customs that you do in your country. In short, it is a time to remember good moments about your country.

Each time the multicultural show comes around, I get very excited because it reminds me a lot of my country (the D.R.). I think I have told you enough and gave you some clues of what and when the multicultural show will be. Enjoy the show!

New World High School is a wonderful school that has students from a diverse mix of cultures. Students from all around the world meet together in one place, and this place is New World High School.

Many people live only knowing their own culture. However, not everyone should be satisfied with that. Learning other cultures can expose you to new types of food, friends, goods and ideas. So one main reason to learn about other cultures is to keep things interesting and to gain knowledge and awareness of other people and things.

Some of the countries that we have present here at this school include: The Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Senegal, Yemen, Palestine, Pakistan, Liberia, Albania, Bangladesh, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ghana, Mali, Mexico, Peru, South Africa, The Ivory Coast, Vietnam, Guinea Conakry, Congo Kinshasa, and many more.

Different cultures are like puzzle pieces that make up the world. Once those pieces are found and understood, we can discover the beauty of each piece’s shape and how it fits into the bigger picture. This is what makes our world interesting. It is wonderful to belong to a school with many different cultures.

COLLEGE AS AN ESSENTIAL FACTORBy NELSON FLORES

College is a significant step in a student’s life. It represents an opportunity for a brighter future as it prepares students to be highly involved in their community. Although many people compare it to high school, there are certain tips that one should consider in order to succeed in this place where “dreams become true."

• College is about making wise decisions in order to create open-minded leaders of our community. Consequently, you should put all of your effort and motivation on what you do.

• College is about gaining expertise and knowledge in your particular field or major of study to be ready for a competitive technological world. Therefore, you should take into consideration taking courses that would lead you to be successful before you actually enroll in a college class.

• A good way to be ready for college is to take College-Now programs given throughout the year in different institutions in our area, such as Hostos Community College, Monroe College and Lehman College. Students, who attend these

programs and successfully finish them have the opportunity to receive college credits, which are transferable to your college of choice. Besides this, you get to know what it feels like to be in a college-level class and learn how to prepare yourself when you begin your career. Some of the courses that you can choose from include: introduction to criminal justice, expository wri t ing, nutr i t ion, general psychology, intermediate algebra, fundamentals in public speaking, introduction to the digital toolbox, and many more. (Note: some courses may have different requirements that must be met in order to be eligible).

• If you want to create your ideal future and see your dreams become realized, you should always keep up the hard work and be positive in everything you do. Remember your future is in your hands.

In conclusion, college is one of the most important steps in a student’s life, but success in high school is the most important step. It is a challenge that should be taken seriously, for the benefits outweigh the sacrifices made in this road towards “success”.

No big deal! If you really want to know the truth about the Regents, they aren’t as hard as you may have been told. It all depends on you and the time that you spend studying for it. If you still feel nervous, here are some tips for when you have that “big test” on your hands.

• Never let people stress you out by telling you that the Regents are that difficult. In fact, they are difficult just for the ones who are always influenced by other people’s ideas about it.

• Always be prepared during class. You never know how the test will be, so you must always be prepared. Use the Regents prep books to be familiar with the test structure. You should make sure that you study everything you know will be on the test.

• You must bring everything you need; always bring extra items such as pencils, erasers, pens, etc….

• The night before the test, do not forget to review your notes and everything you have done in class.

• Do not stress yourself thinking about how it will be difficult, the real truth is that nothing is difficult if you put all your effort in it.

Remember, do not be afraid of the Regents; they are just simple tests that you can pass if you really try your best and put all your effort into making them happen, but you must always be prepared. Never be afraid because fears are just in the mind and if we can handle those fears, we can easily be successful… good luck!

How stressful can it be having to take the same test over and over again? And can it get any worse if it depends on your future! As we students know, taking a quiz or a test in class is stressful enough to drive us crazy for a couple of days, but the stress is much more for a state test.

There are many tips and strategies that we can use in many exams and test, be it the SAT or ACT, the regents, or a simple quiz that we should be able to handle in 25 minutes. These tips should work in any subject.

Tips before the test:

• Preparing for your first test should begin on the first day of class; this includes paying attention during class, taking g o o d n o t e s , s t u d y i n g , c o m p l e t i n g h o m e w o r k assignments and reviewing

study materials on a regular basis.

• Budget your time; make sure you have sufficient time to study so that you are well prepared for the test.

• Eat before a test. Having food in your stomach will give you energy and will help you focus, but avoid heavy foods, which can make you groggy.

• Have a good night’s rest and arrive early.

Tips during the test:

• Bring at least two pens/pencils with good erasers, a calculator with enough batteries and any other resources that your teacher allows you to. Also, bring a watch to the test so that you can better pace yourself.

• Do the easiest problems first. Do not stay on a problem that you are stuck on, especially when time is a factor.

• Write legibly. If the grader cannot read what you wrote, they will most likely mark it wrong.

• Read carefully: Do not make assumptions about what the question might be.

• Double check to make sure that you put your first and last name on the test.

Tips after the test:

• Look over the test and make sure that you understand your mistakes. If you do not know the answer to a question, look it up, ask a classmate or ask the teacher

• If the teacher reviews the test in class, be sure to take notes on what the teacher wanted f o r a n a n s w e r o n t h e questions/problems that you got wrong.

• Save the test as study m a t e r i a l f o r f u t u r e cumulative tests.

If you follow these tips and strategies you should be able to handle any kind on test or quizzes and have a good grade on it. Remember some exams and tests determine whether you go to a good school or not and if you are graduating or not. So think about it before wasting your time. Take it seriously because it will have an impact on your future. Do what you have to do and do it well because you will be rewarded later.

Stressed About an Upcoming Test? Here Is Some Help!

I know that a f e w w o r d s m i g h t n o t change your w o r l d c o m p l e t e l y. H o w e v e r, I also know that talking about our lives and reading about

o t h e r s ’ experiences helps us better understand ourselves.

Depression… what is it exactly? If you look it up in the dictionary, this is the definition you would get: “A condition of mental disturbance, typically with lack of energy and difficulty in maintaining concentration or interest in life.” However, by asking others and thinking about how I feel, I have found a better definition. Depression is when a person finds himself or herself lost

in this world. When you feel that you do not matter to those around you and you do not feel loved. This lack of interest is caused by many different problems in our lives. Let us do one of the positive things and let us think of a way to overcome it! One thing to keep in mind is that there are people who truly love you and care about you! Never put yourself down! Always think positively about yourself. After I interviewed Sali Salem, I was able to conclude that one positive thing she does especially well is taking time to be alone and reflecting about the good aspects of her life. This can help a lot of people who do not like to talk much, but if you are one of those people who does not mind speaking to others about your struggles, then you should go speak to someone who is close to you, such as a friend or to an adult, such as a counselor or a parent. You can also speak to someone by calling the crisis intervention hotline (1-800-LIFENET). It is free and confidential. The last few words I have to say is that there are people who truly love you and care about you, therefore life is indeed worth living.

Fast Food in America

Americans are known for looking for the quickest way to grab a meal and to go to work, as part of their daily routine. That is where fast food restaurants come into play offering a great variety of choices, beginning with low and convenient prices to the fastest service done. The “grab-and-go” community is over 25% of Americans every day. And this number keeps rising. According to Google Maps, there are close to 50,000 fast food chains across the United States with McDonalds being the largest res tauran t cha in . They a re attracting people not just to eat at these restaurants, but they are also giving jobs to the majority. The inconvenience of all of this food is the negative effects that it causes to our health. The obesity rate is

increasing; adult obesity rates increased in 16 states in the past year and it did not decline in any state, according to F As in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2011, a report from Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) and t h e R o b e r t Wo o d J o h n s o n Foundation (RWJF), twelve states now have obesity rates above 30%. Since 1995, rates have doubled in nearly 17 states. This event affects the entire society since there is a need for more spending in health care to prevent people from having health problems.

Asthma is another result of fast food. People with obesity are 92% more likely to be experiencing a s thmat i c symptoms ( Ju l i a Ransohoff). And these problems are just a few that are being

mentioned compared to the scary reality.

Fast food companies are only good for those who are driving it. These companies try to persuade us to buy their products, but in reality, their products are hideous drugs that are damaging our future society and our children. We know that businesses can create any sort of company in this free-market economy, but we need to ask ourselves, do we want our future to be buried in doctor appointments and lamentable hours in the hospital? Or, do we prefer to be with our families enjoying their company and teaching them to be healthier each time? The choice is ours. Choose wisely, because your choice will affect your future.

The effects of drugs on our life are enormous. Nowadays more and more teenagers use these drugs as a means to show that they are tough or to fit in a certain group. This use of drugs has a negative impact on the developing brain of teenagers.

Some young people think, “When I grow up, I will quit,” but the problem is that, by that time, they are already addicted. If you are addicted, you would not feel good unless you have a taste of it. This is happening to teenagers across the country who are using drugs in order to fit in. The problem is when you start using drugs, you will not see the effect until many years down the line.

Using drugs affects your life, mentally, physically and socially. Drugs have a mental influence on us in the sense that it makes us lose memory of what we previously did. Sometimes, drug addicts do something without realizing what they have done until after they are sober. Drugs have an effect on us physically, in the sense that it makes us weak, skinnier and uglier. Socially, in the sense that you will not feel like hanging around your friends or your family. You feel alone and isolated by using drugs. Ultimately, the usage of drugs can lead to death, so it is important to remember these negative effects and avoid drugs. By avoiding drugs we can live a better, healthier, and longer life.

The Effects of Drugs on Our Health

It is important for students to be healthy, so I have decided to share some health tips that can help you live better and be healthy.

1. Exercise 2 to 3 times a week.

2. Eat 3 times a day. Eating fruits, vegetables, and grains is very good for your organ system.

3. Quit smoking because it can damage your heart and give you serious health problems.

4. Always be positive, happy, amiable, and help other people in need.

5. Sleep well at night and give your brain some time to rest.

Our health is the best thing we can have. If we work on our health, we can live better. Always try to achieve your goals and be healthy. Believe in yourself no matter what you do.

A bully is a person who uses strength or power to harm or intimidate those who are weaker. Bullying does not only strike the United States or just the Bronx, it happens throughout the whole world. Everyday kids get bullied. Bullying does not have to be physical, it can happen on the Internet, through texting, and through many other modes of communication. As you might have heard in the news back in 2010, a college student committed suicide because his roommate posted footage of him getting intimate with another guy on Facebook. This was cyber-bullying. But many people today are still suffering of cyber-bullying. Bullies often intimidate other kids that appear to be physically or mentally weak. The bullies take advantage of them. In many schools, kids are being bullied for their shoes or even for their lunch money, for meaningless goods. There is verbal bullying as well, which nowadays is just too common. People do not really pay attention to it, while it is the victims that suffer the most. Small things such as calling others inappropriate names. These words hurt people’s feelings when they hear them. Another major type of bullying is indirect bullying. It is very common in schools. Indirect bullying is spreading rumors about others to make them look bad, or rejecting others from groups. Bullying should be stopped.

Suggestions to Know About

I will not advise you because I believe I am better than you; I will advise you because I want you to become the best person you can be. I may not be the most successful person in this small planet, but I may be the only one who will raise my voice and share my knowledge with you, so that you can have a better awareness and understanding for the things around you.

Here are my suggestions:

* Start your day with a positive attitude and big smile, then you will see life differently.

* Be tolerant of things and do not allow them to be a big deal.

* Your mood is like seasons. Do not let anyone or anything ruin your mood.

* Do your best to understand the people who are around you.

* Remember that life should not be an emergency. Try to be calm when life presents you with any obstacles.

* Trust yourself. Be more confident and believe that you can achieve the things that you want in life.

* Stay positive, even in times when you feel that you are lonely, remember that there is a reason for all things that are happening in your life. So take the challenge to enjoy every second in you life.

* Find yourself before you get lost. When you can understand who you are and be accepting of that, you make things easier for yourself.

* Live your day like it is the last day of your life. Be full of energy so you can face anything.

In the end, do not be sad, be happy. It does not matter how much pain you have in you heart. Remember that you will live this life only once. It is in your hands to make your life the best or the worst experience. It all depends on your attitude.

Who ever thought an Asian Harvard graduate would ever be the reigning star of the NY Knicks. Well, these last weeks, Jeremy Lin has made it happen. Being an athlete is not Lin’s only talent, he was also a serious economics graduate student at Harvard University.

These last few weeks, he has been the key playmaker of the Knicks. He has fueled the Knicks victory over the five times champion, Kobe Bryant, and the LA Lakers by scoring the game high (38 pts, 7 assists). With that said and done, it is very clear that he has also earned himself a place in the All-Star Rising Stars challenge. Since Lin has started playing, fans can see great progress and now the Knicks are on their way to becoming an elite team in the western conference.

Respect

He felt shy and flustered,And she felt happy, yet bothered…

He was afraid that his feelings would not be returned,And she feared that of them her parents would learn…

He listened, patient, and soundless,And then she decided to go and confess…

He realized then that they could be together,And that was until she told him it was passing the border…

He looked helplessly at the words that broke his heart,And she said, “Sorry, if only culture, weren’t a main art…”

He told her he needed time to be apart,And she fell down, feeling torn and sick to the heart…

He has left now, feeling all sad and lonely,And she’s thinking over and over, “If only, if only…”

He wonders about all of the restrictions,And she’s explaining, “It’s okay. I guessed this was going

to happen…”

He says, “You didn’t even try.”And she cries, “You’re not understanding. Why?”

They both wished for their future together,Wishing that they would have been forever…

He, however, decided to forget it entirely,And she’s left thinking how she would’ve had it…

Completely.

He Said Coldly; She Cried Sadly By AMAL HADI

Respect is the most important word there is. We should all have it in mind when we speak to someone. It could be someone who is your same age or someone who is older than you. Either way, to respect someone you first need to learn how to respect your own self. Respecting someone is not acting childish at school or screaming around like a little kid. Respect starts at home in your family. We learn in our house how to say, “thank you,” “good morning,” and “good night.” Everything that people tell you, do not take it as a joke. Believe in yourself, be strong, achieve everything you want to accomplish, and do it without any regret.

Teachers should also get respect from their students, not only during school but also after school. We need respect to build up trust and have good relationships between teachers and students alike. I personally believe that students should respect their teachers in every aspect because we will gain an advantage towards the future, to have better resources, such as college references and more. Teachers can be helpful in so many ways. They help us with our homework, they give us one-on-one counseling and they are understanding of our problems. However, you do not get respect unless you give respect. To get respect, we need to earn it.

When I first c a m e t o t h e United States from the Dominican Republic, I was so excited because I could not wait to meet this country. At the same time I f e l t s o s a d , because I had left my friends and

part of my family including my grandparents and my father. My grandparents were crying the day before I came to the United States. My father was the one who took me to the airport; I saw the sadness in his face, I felt like crying too. I was sad because I was leaving the country where I had lived for 15 years, the place where I born and where I had my friends from when I was a little child.

When I got here I felt like I was born again; I had no friends and I didn’t know the language. I did not know how to use public transportation, so I was not able to leave too far from home. I felt very different because I was living in a country that was different from the country that I had left. Here people spoke a different language, they had another culture that I was not part of. I felt lonely because I could no longer go to places and have fun with friends.

About a month after I came to the United States, I started school. I began to learn English and I started to understand what people were saying to me while I was walking down the street, and I began to understand what they were asking me. I started to understand the rules of the country, and I also started to understand how to use public transportation, so I was able to go out and meet new places. Also in school, I met more people and I started to have friends and to socialize with other people because I was learning the language.

However, now I can socialize with people in my language that is Spanish and with people that know English too. After all that happened, I feel proud of myself because I have passed an obstacle that was in my life and now I can feel confident to face any other obstacles that life brings me.

The first months that I lived here were extremely hard, because I felt lost in a world that I didn’t know; I was like a newborn baby that didn’t know anything. However, as time passed I adjusted to the United States and to its laws. As time passed, I learned more and more about the United States and I felt more comfortable because I had more friends and I learned more of the language. Now I can communicate with people that are native speakers of English. This situation that has happened in my life has helped me learn that no matter what situation you are in, keep your head up and always go forward. Never give up because if you want to be someone in the world, you have to fight for what you want.

English has always been my second language. As a beginner, I had wished to wake up one day knowing everything about the language. When I first arrived to New York City from my home country, Yemen, I thought it was going to be easy to adapt to a new environment. The language was not going to be the hardest thing to learn, actually getting to know the people and to be able to communicate with everyone was one of the biggest obstacles I faced. As days passed by, I learned more about this new place and I started to become more focused towards achieving my goals.

Going to high school was my goal. I wanted to get into a good high school after I graduated from my middle school and I ended up going to Harry Truman High School, which was my cousin’s suggestion. The school was very good, but I could not be enrolled into their school because it was for students who knew English very well and I was not one of them. I was disappointed, but I decided to transfer to New World High School. Here I have discovered great teachers and the perfect program for me. Now I am on my way to improving my English language skills in all the educational categories.

Moreover, at New World High School I am able to explore the different cultures of people that I had never heard from before. This presence of student diversity has encouraged me to stick to this school. Everyone here is treated the same and I feel like I am one with everybody. My grades have improved rapidly and I have made a lot of friends with people from many different countries, such as the Dominican Republic, South Africa, Algeria, Palestine and many more. I have learned one very important lesson throughout my high school years, which is to never push things aside or wait until the last moment to do them.

My Dream By ZAIMA ZENIYA

The quote, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” by Eleanor Roosevelt is important. It means that only if you believe in your dreams, and work hard enough to fulfill it, it can come true. Your future will be very successful if your dreams do come true. I also have dreams that I want to accomplish in life.

One of my dreams is to become a nurse or doctor. I want to become a doctor to help all the people with diseases and problems with health. If I become a doctor, I could save the lives of many people. To save someone’s life, or help them with their health, is a wonderful feeling because you are doing a good deed.

When visiting my doctor, I always ask her about her career and she explains to me what she does and enjoys. She helps me believe in my dreams and she tells me that I can face any problems through hard work. Also, seeing people out of the hospital, cured or healed from whatever they had helps me believe that I can do the same when I become a doctor. Also, my family supports me and my dreams of what I want to become. I know that becoming a doctor will be hard work and that there is a lot to know and to go through, but I will try my best and accomplish my dream.

Before I can even achieve my goals, I must face the hardships in high school and college. It will be a lot of hard work. I have to pass all my regents, exams, and classes. However, school provides us with many opportunities to do extra-curricular activities that we enjoy and many resources, such as internships, SAT prep for college, college courses, etc.... To be a successful person, I need to accomplish these goals in life. I have the ability to achieve my dreams and I know anyone else can too if we all just work hard, try our best, and never give up.

My Future DreamsBy AZIZAH ABDO

Everybody has their own dream to have a better life in the future, but everybody does not have the same opportunity. Some of them have a good life and some of them are presently going through a hard time, but each of them is working today to make it better for tomorrow. And those who believe in their dream, only they can make their dreams come true.

I am a student at New World High School. I have a big dream, which is to be a space engineer and to have a better life in this beautiful world. I just came to the USA a few months ago. When my family and I got the opportunity to come here, I was so happy because in my country, colleges do not offer any majors in space engineering. Though I was new in the USA, I tried my best to do well in school. I believe that I can be a successful young girl.

I understand that middle school is easier compared to high school, especially when it is in a foreign country. Though to graduate from high school and to go to a college is not an easy task. My high school

teachers and my senior friends in high school have opened my eyes to be involved in as much activities as I can be, because only passing classes will not help me to get that what I really deserve. So I am doing whatever I need to do to go to college because this is the only way to fulfill my dream. To be a real successful person, I need to achieve my goals step-by-step and I know I have the ability to make it happen.

People all around me inspire me to believe in myself and all of the leaders we see in history also stimulate me to dream. There are so many people who have had a hardship life in their past, but they made their dreams come true. And finally after achieving their dream they have also helped those people who struggled make their dream true too. Actually, I feel so sad when I think there are still starving people in our 21st century world. I want a truly beautiful world and I know there are so many people who have the same dream as I do. I know we can make it happen if we believe in ourselves.
