ASHA CRITIC AT LARGEASHA CRITIC AT LARGE

SISTA's the spectacular play has been showing off-broadway since it's premiere last October. The all female cast is an extraordinary quintet of beautiful voices and dynamic personalities. The unique story was written by playwright Dorothy Marcic and produced by Tony Award winner Hinton Battle. The backdrop of the story is in an attic. The attic belongs to the grand-mother of three African American sister's played by Tracy Conyer Lee, April Nixon, and Jennifer Fouche. They grandmother has just passed and they have been tasked with finding an appropriate song to sing for their grandmother's funeral. They do so with the help of one of the sis-ter's daughters played by Lexi Rhoades and their white sister-in-law played by Amy Goldberger. The five women find themselves sifting through the grandmother's attic which serves as a museum of memorabilia, tracing all the way back to the 1930's. As they dig through the rich artifacts of the matriarch's life they are forced to confront devastating realities from their past as well as their present. The way in which they are able to cope with these hard truths and happy memories is by singing songs of their childhood. The songs are varied in pace, tempo, and feeling but all aid in making the play interactive. The audience is inspired to move in their seats when the ladies do a Motown medley of songs by musical legends like the Supremes. There is a funny moment where the niece (Rhoades) sings Erykah Badu's hit "Tyrone" as a way to let her man know she's not tak-ing his mess. The crowd cues in at the appropriate moment of the song making them feel part of the show.

There are few sad moments when the music brings you to a place of tears and sorrow. Fouche plays Roberta the feisty, quick-talking, activist sister who inevitably draws us in with her powerful voice while singing Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" a song that captured the haunting truth of how African American slavess were treated.

A moment to celebrate was when Conyer's character Gloria, the bible-carrying Christian sister, stepped out of her comfort zone in an attempt to belt out the lyrics to Beyonce's "Put a Ring on It." There are many other special moments as well as thought provoking ones that address issues of interracial relationships, race/gender dis-crimination, and unhealthy relationships. Amy Goldberger who plays Heather the white sister-in-law does a great job of holding her own against the vocal talents of the other women. She is also a strong charac-ter as well who understands the importance of fighting for what you be-lieve in. However, there were moments in the play where her responses to questions about unfair imprisonment for minorities make her seem like the token white character. I know she's more than that and would have liked to see more of her awareness of something broad base like institutionalized racism. The play was every bit entertaining and emotional. The audience laughed and cried and left with their bellies full from good music and good acting. My belief is that everyone should support this show, is not based on a suggestion but a necessity. Shows like SISTA's that tell true stories of African American history are deserving of a loyal audience and support. Go check out SISTA's now playing at St. Lukes Cathedral off Broadway.

Snoop Dogg becomes Snoop

Lion, readies reggae CD

July 31, 2012, 2:06 PM EST NEW YORK (AP) -- Snoop Dogg wants you to know

that he's tired of hip-hop, is Bob Marley reincarnated and is embracing reggae instead of the culture of guns he once rapped about.

Also, he's got a new name: Snoop Lion. The artist said at a news conference Monday in New

York that he was "born again" during a visit to Jamaica in February and is ready to make music that his "kids and grandparents can listen to."

The former gangster rapper is releasing a reggae album called "Reincarnated" in the fall. He said that in Jamaica, he connected with Bob Marley's spirit and is now "Bob Marley reincarnated."

Bing: Snoop Lion documentary Bob Marley's son Rohan attended the conference and

gave Snoop his blessing. "I feel like I've always been Rastafarian," Snoop said of

the spiritual Jamaican movement. While there, he said, he visited a temple, was renamed Snoop Lion and was also given the Ethiopian name Berhane, meaning "light of the world."

Snoop didn't explain why he was switching from "Dogg" to "Lion," but it's likely a reference to the Lion of Judah, a religious symbol popular in Rastafarian and Ethio-pian culture.

Later, he played five songs for a small crowd, including one called "No Guns Allowed." It features his daughter and includes the lyrics, "No guns allowed in here tonight, we're going to have a free for all, no fights."

"It's so tragic that people are doing stupid things with guns," he said.

Snoop, best known for hits like "Gin and Juice" and "Drop It Like It's Hot," is an avid supporter of marijuana rights and has been banned from entering Norway for two years after trying to enter the country with a small amount last month.

Also: Snoop Dogg denied Norway entry for 2 years for pot

He said that in Jamaica, where he stayed for 35 days, he grew closer to his wife, who saw his transition. He added that he's excited to perform music that his family and chil-dren can listen to.

"As a 40-year-old man ... I've got to give them some-thing," he said. "That's what you do when you're wise."

Snoop Dogg said he's not completely retiring from hip-hop but is "tired" of the genre because it is no longer chal-lenging.

"Reggae was calling ... it's a breath of fresh air," he said. "Rap isn't challenging; it's not appealing."

The album was produced by Diplo and will feature Snoop singing. It will be released on Vice Records.

The album will be followed with a documentary of the same name, also produced by Vice. It features Snoop making music and will include some personal elements of his life, a producer of the film said. It will debut at the Toronto Inter-national Film Festival in September.

A coffee table book about Snoop's rebirth is also in the works.

"It feels like I'm 19 or 20 years old again," he said.

July 31, 2012, 4:33 PM EST

Billboard

Jay-Z's Made in America Festival just got exponentially bigger following the Philadelphia weekend's final lineup announcement earlier Tuesday.

Rap legends (and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members) Run-DMC will perform on the event's second night, which Pearl Jam is headlining.

The festival also added acts that skew more towards pop than hip-hop, includ-ing Swedish House Mafia DJ Alesso, bluesy guitarist Gary Clark Jr., and rocker Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. They will play alongside previously billed elec-tronic acts like Skrillex, Miike Snow, and "Feel So Close" singer Calvin Harris.

Dennis Rodman writes children’s book: ‘Dennis The Wild Bull’

Would you let NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman teach life les-sons to your kids? The question may soon be answered when the for-mer basketball star releases his own children’s book entitled: Dennis The Wild Bull. Reportedly, Rodman wants to inspire kids by writing about he overcame some of the challenges he faced as a young per-son. The Huffington Post reports:

Dennis Rodman has staked his claim in the literary world before, penning four autobiographical titles, including 2005′s “I Should Be Dead By Now.”

But the Hall of Famer’s newest work, “Dennis The Wild Bull,” isn’t the latest account of his raucous life, it may actually be a prequel — written for children, TMZ reports.

Details on the children’s book, which is slated to be released later this year, are minimal, but according to a website dedicated to the work, it will “convey good lessons to children based on Dennis’ own experiences as a world class athlete while overcom-ing obstacles as a child.” Rodman teamed up with author/screenwriter Dustin Warburton and illustrator Dan Monroe to create the book.

Oprah has a reason to celebrate; ratings up at OWN

It’s been an uphill battle for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN, but based on recent ratings, the “Queen of Talk’ has a reason to celebrate. Efforts to improve the ratings for OWN are mov-ing faster than previously expected.

According to Discovery’s chief executive David Zaslav, “We’re significantly ahead of where we thought we would be last quarter. After a 14 percent ratings gain in the first quarter in its core audience of women 25-54, OWN grew viewership around 20 percent in the latest period,” Zaslav said. “And so far in the third quarter, ratings are up more than 50 percent. Overall, that leaves the channel up about 25 percent year-to-date.”

Since launching in January 2011, OWN reportedly lost over $300 million in advertising due to poor ratings, lead-ing Discover to nearly double its initial investment.

However over the past few months, Oprah has landed several interviews with highly sought after guests for Oprah’s Next Chapter including Bobbi Kristina, Paris Jack-son, 50 Cent, and the Kardashian clan.

It’s apparent that Oprah increasing her screen time equates to boosts in ratings for OWN

Veteran Educator Proposes a Way for

Creating Smart Schools

New book offers a process for the creation of smart or effective schools through the development and implementation of the Educational Instructional

Coaching Model WESTBURY, N.Y. – According to John Dewey, education is not a

preparation for life, but is life itself. As a veteran educator committed to public education, Dr. Judith Kronin pens Creating Smart Schools, a book that pro-poses a model that makes it possible for every student to attain a quality edu-cation.

Ron Edmonds spoke in an uncompromising voice, “All children can learn.” Today, Kronin speaks with the same resounding spirit and says, “All educators can teach.” Creating Smart Schools is a book that offers a process for the creation of effective schools through the development and implementa-tion of the Educational Instructional Coaching Model. This model, (EICM), will enable American students to earn top scores on the Programme for Inter-national Students Assessment (PISA). EICM evolved from research and a set of core beliefs, which include the following:

The major goal of educators is to inspire students to become critical thinkers and independent learners.

Educators must create environments of small learning communities where a major portion of instruction is devoted to problem solving.

Educators must create lesson plans that inspire students to increase their enjoyment of good questions and help them work out their own under-standing of “static” knowledge like mathematics, science, and reading.

Teachers must design student-directed instructions. Educational reform is comprehensive and involves every member of

the educational community. Instructional coaching, which requires mutual respect between a coach

and teacher, is the cornerstone for improving classroom instruction. Made available through Xlibris, Creating Smart Schools is the guide-

book to what every school needs for every student to attain quality education. For more information on this book, interested parties may log on to

As Publisher of the Community Journal I highly recommend reading this book, especially if you

have children living in Nassau County...

eBay Store Closed

My eBay store, The Quality Corner 1, is now closed. After much delib-

eration, I decided to close it last month. It was not an easy decision, but it is the best course right now.

I opened the store back in 2008 and it was my pride and joy. I worked very hard to grow my eBay business. In 2009, I expanded to selling books and audiobooks world-wide. In 2010, I became a Power Seller and an eBay Top Rated Seller. I felt good about my accomplishments at that time.

In 2011, eBay made several changes to the fee structure and seller requirements. During the entire time I've sold on eBay, they have continued to make policy changes. However, the most recent changes caused me to reconsider my eBay busi-ness. I decided to keep the store open through the busiest season of the year. After a slow holiday sea-son, I became discouraged. After reviewing my prof-its, I made the final decision to close the store in Feb-ruary. As the saying goes, "if it doesn't make dollars, it doesn't make sense."

Even though my eBay store is closed, The Qual-ity Corner is still open. I maintain my relationship with a very large book distributor, therefore, I still have access to over 2 million titles in print and audio. I will continue to take special requests and ship books directly to my customers. I have several local customers, including the Columbus City School district. I am very thankful for my loyal customers and I look forward to continually providing quality products and quality service in the future.

The online segment of my business is continuing to grow. I am now selling ebooks, music and entertainment on my blog. You can view my selection here. Also, I am an affiliate for Barnes & Noble, so I will be promoting their products and passing on sav-ings to my readers. You can read more about that here. I intend to focus more on my book review service as well. To learn more about book promotion through reviews, trailers and press releases, view my website at www.blackbookreview.com.

Tramp. Since the introduction of Snow White in 1937, four of the ten princesses have been young women of color; Pocahontas, Jasmin, Mulan and Tiana. But critics point out that this might not necessarily mean an end to Disney’s stereotyping. For in-stance, Tiana, the studio’s first African-American princess appeared on a watermelon candy wrapper.

One 22-year-old female, Lauren, published on her Tumblr page reinterpretations the race of some of Disney’s princesses. Using Azalea’s dolls, a doll dress-up web-site, Lauren changed the skin color of the princesses. ”So I made a bunch of white Disney characters into WOC,” Lauren wrote on her Tumblr page. “Just for funzies “

Disney princesses undoubtedly have had an influence on the meaning of beauty and the role of women. ”As a woman, you can either be a princess awaiting her prince or an evil stepmother/witch; as a man, you get all the action (in many senses of the word,)” Natalie Wilson wrote in an AlterNet article published last year . “And beauty, of course, equals white, blonde, thin and young.”

While Lauren changed the color of these women she left the hair texture the same, leaving critics to further discuss hair as a standard of beauty in the African American community.

Greetings, Friends! Each week is a challenge, not so much about writing the col-umn, but what might be in-teresting to you. Many ideas reverberate around my head, but, the final choice is not easy, nor may it be the right choice. Often, I am torn be-tween the secular, the spiri-tual, the political, the family, the . . . . YIKES! A conun-drum, for sure, and none easily justified.

Well, here we go! I am troubled by how so many people take the short-cuts in life, find it easier to lie than state the simple truth, cut corners to get where they want to go, sooner than God intended, sooner than they deserve to be. I am troubled by all the troubled people in the world, many of whom are around me. The Lord knows that I don't like con-flict, but HE is ensuring that I build character, character that would not be strength-ened without adversity, chal-lenges, conflagrations, stub-born situations or great con-flict!

WHO am I to argue with the Lord? For sure, my arms are too short to box with God! For sure HE is more powerful than I, and stronger than ALL of us put together. BUT, GOD is not the problem, or the issue. It is US, either singularly, in groups, or in total. WE need to follow HIS teachings, lis-ten to HIS word, Love one another, as HE has loved us, completely, and without res-ervation. Wholly, and not in increments. Think about it, pray over it, contemplate it for as long as it takes, but, try it, you might like it, AND, be Happy because of

Museum Mission Statement The mission of the African American Museum of Nassau County [AAM] is

to provide programming and events that foster the intellectual development of community members and visitors with an interest in African-American art, history and culture. A primary goal is to disseminate the history of African-Americans on Long Island and the African-American contribution to the social and cultural development of American society through material and visual culture. The AAM, located in Hempstead, New York, opened in 1970, at the

height of the black power movement, as the Black History Exhibit Center. It is the only African American history museum on Long Island, and is located to serve Nassau County’s largest African-American population. The museum is a multi-disciplinary cultural institution that provides art installations, historical exhibitions, film pro-grams, community service events, and educational programming. This 6,000-square-foot facility, offers a rotating series of exhibits showcasing local and na-tional African American artists. The African Ameri-can Museum also houses the African Atlantic Geneal-ogy Society. This organization provides workshops and individual research instruction in family geneal-ogy. The museum has installed a new E-Learning Program that offers an innovative pedagogical ap-proach, using subject headings relative to Americans of African descent, for conducting research on the internet. The AAM is cur-rently working on methods to expand the community’s understanding of knowledge organization methods, literary warrant, and information retrieval and how these relate to African-American social history.
