My primary reason for choosing the Media

Studies program at The New School was its

dual emphasis on theory and practice. I have

been shooting documentary video and hope to

build on my practical experience (particularly

in storytelling, research, and editing) while

developing a theoretical framewor within which

to wor. an came to the program from BarefootWorshops, a nonprot devoted to teaching documentary media

to individuals and NGO staff in the Ma an Nh fca.

One thing that struc me when I entered the

program was the regard held for students

by the faculty. We were told that we were

all colleagues and that it was our duty to

contribute to the eld. I am excited that Ive

entered this realm of academia where ideas

can be exchanged freely and new avenues

discovered. Ma Hay is a lmmaer.

My internship at CNN not only allowed me to

networ with industry professionals, it gave me

an insiders perspective of the news and media

industry that went well beyond what could be

students with a range of personal and career goals. Our students

are socially engaged scholars and innovators.

Each year, the students organize an academic conference,

Critical Themes in Media Studies, which brings together scholars

from all over the world. They publish Immediacy, an online journalon media and culture. They exhibit their projects at regularly

scheduled media shows: RUFF CUTS (wors-in-progress) and FINE

    CUTS (nished wors).

Two annual juried exhibitions give students exposure to the

world of media outside the university: Mixed Messages, a

multimedia show, and the Hirshon Invitational Film Show. Wors

by our students have been exhibited at national and international

festivals and venues including Sundance, the Tribeca Film

THE FACULTYTHEORYMEETSPRACTICEThe New School is a relatively small and tightly nit academic

community. Students in the graduate program in Media Studies

develop close academic relationships with the faculty through

interactions in the classroom and collaboration on research and

    production projects.

The Media Studies faculty includes scholars and practitioners

of the highest caliber: philosophers, sociologists, lmmaers,

producers, designers, musicians, entrepreneurs, and policy and

business consultants. The full-time faculty of 21 is supported byaround 50 part-time members whose scholarly, creative, and other

professional activities bring specialized nowledge and sills to

    the program.

The holistic approach to media and the

emphasis on combining theory and practice

are what drew me to The New School. My

experience in the program has broadened my

perspective, enabling me to mae multiple

connections across the eld. What maes

The New School unique is its commitment to

social concerns and the close interaction of the

schools across the university. Chan al,associate professor and director of graduate programs, is a media

theorist and a curator at the whny Mm f mcan

and other venues internationally. Her research interests include

digital cinema, the aesthetics of new media, and locative media

art. She describes herself as inspired by the power of media to

change peoples lives all over the world.

What inspires me as a media creator is

the possibility of discovering new and more

personal forms of expression. Teaching is a

logical connection, as I nd that my students,

for the most part, have amazing energy and

pure curiosity. Vla Nlc, associate professor, is ahighly regarded independent lm director and producer. His latest

feature lm, Here and There, has won a number of prizes, including

Best New Yor Narrative Award at the tbca Flm Fval.

The New School is about experimentation.

Faculty and students wor together to dene,

and often transgress, the boundaries of research

and creation. We combine the forces of social

    scientists, humanities scholars, designers, and

    policy experts. This interdisciplinary collaboration

maes for exciting classroom experiences and

research oppor tunities. shannn Man, assistantprofessor, teaches courses on media and public spaces, sound

and space, and formalism and material culture. She tr ies to

instill in her students The New Schools traditional commitment

to lining education to civic engagement and social justice. Her

personal research is motivated by a desire to understand the

contexts in which media operate and the way media theory and

contemporary art and architecture inform each other.
