Preserve fine Thingyantraditions

The Eve of the Thingyan Festival (WaterFestival) falls on the First Waxing of Kason1371 Myanmar Era (today).

According to the Myanmar legend, theKing of Tavatinsa Celestial Abode leaves itskingdom and sojourns in the human abode. Itis traditionally believed that the time he arrivesin the human abode is the beginning ofThingyan. As a gesture of honouring his visit,Myanmar people set Atar pots with variousspecies of seasonal flowers in them on theThingyan Eve to extend a warm welcome to theKing of Tavatinsa Celestial Abode. The dayhas been designated as the Thingyan Eve.

According to Wawharrat-hta PakathaniTreatise, the term “Thingyan” is derived fromthe Sanskrit word “Sinkjanta”, and someassume that it is derived from the Pali word“Sinkanta”. The term “Thingyan” meanstransition from the old to the New Year.

Historic records say that the ThingyanFestival came into existence in Bagan Period.Succesive Myanmar kings celebrated the WaterFestival traditional every year. Referring tothe historical documentaries, the Water Festivalwas celebrated on a grand scale in successiveperiods such as Bagan, Innwa, Nyaungyan andKonbaung.

Long ago, Myanmar people mixed scentedliquid and water into a silver bowl and pouredthe water onto others in a polite way inThingyan. Many used small thabye branches tosprinkle the scented water to others, which is avery lovely tradition of Myanmar.

In Thingyan Festival, the people should allpreserve the fine traditions, and avoid decadentcostumes that harm Myanmar traditions andculture.

Therefore, revellers and merry-makers areurged to welcome the Myanmar New Year1372 by avoiding decadent culture andcostumes and preserving and safeguardingcultural heritage and national character.

NEW YORK , 12 April — When patent number20100079356 was published on the US Patent andTrademark Office website at the beginning of thismonth, it was assumed that it was an April Fool joke. But now it appears that plans for Apple to developelectronic spectacles that will allow the wearer towatch 3D films on the move are more rooted in real-ity than it at first seemed.

If the spectacles are indeed in development theywill revolutionise the way films can be enjoyed onApple’s major products — the iPod, iPhone andiPad.The document shows how users would slot theiriPod or iPhone into the head-mounted gadget. EDINBURGH, 12 April — The identification of 20genes which could help explain the causes of kidneydisease could one day “revolutionise” treatment, re-searchers say. Chronic kidney disease affects aboutone in 10 adults and can require dialysis or even anorgan transplant. The genes identified by the interna-tional team of researchers control kidney functionssuch as filtering waste from the blood.

Experts said the Nature Genetics study was “a greatbreakthrough”. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is along-term condition in which the kidneys progres-sively lose their function.People tend not to noticesymptoms, which can include swollen ankles andhands or blood in the urine, until the condition is ad-vanced.

It is linked to ageing — about one in five men andone in four women aged between 65 and 74 will havesome degree of CKD.—Internet

OHIO, 12 April— A researcherhas developed a brief memory test tohelp doctors determine whethersomeone is suffering from the earlymemory and reasoning problems thatoften signal Alzheimer’s disease.

In a s tudy in the journalAlzheimer Disease and AssociatedDisorders, neurologist Dr. DouglasScharre of Ohio State UniversityMedical Center reports that the testdetected 80 percent of people withmild thinking and memory problems. It only turned up a false positive —wrongly suggesting that a personhas a problem — in five percent ofpeople with normal thinking.

The test can be taken by hand, which Scharre said may help peoplewho aren’t comfortable withtechnology like computers. He’smaking the tests, which take 15 minutesto complete, available free to healthworkers at www.sagetest.osu.edu.

“They can take the test in thewaiting room while waiting for thedoctor,” Scharre said.

“Abnormal test results can serveas an early warning to the patient’sfamily,” added Scharre. “The resultscan be a signal that caregivers mayneed to begin closer monitoring ofthe patient to ensure their safety andgood health is not compromised andthat they are protected from financialpredators.”

In the study, 254 people aged 59and older took the test. Of those, 63underwent an in-depth cl inicalevaluation to determine their level ofcognitive ability.

SCIENCEDAILY 12 Apr—A British scientific ex-pedition has discovered the world's deepest underseavolcanic vents, known as 'black smokers', 3.1 miles(5000 metres) deep in the Cayman Trough in theCaribbean. Using a deep-diving vehicle remotelycontrolled from the Royal Research Ship JamesCook, the scientists found slender spires made ofcopper and iron ores on the seafloor, erupting waterhot enough to melt lead, nearly half a mile deeperthan anyone has seen before.

Deep-sea vents are undersea springs where su-perheated water erupts from the ocean floor. Theywere first seen in the Pacific three decades ago, butmost are found between one and two miles deep.
