LOS ANGELES, 9 Aug—A bacterium normallyfound in the mouth, skinand intestines might belinked with colic in babies,a new study has found.
In the study publishedin the August issue of theJournal of Pediatrics, re-searchers at the Universityof Texas Medical Schoolat Houston analyzed dataof 36 babies, both breast-and bottle-fed. About halfhad colic.
The researchers foundthe bacterium Klebsiellaalong with gut inflamma-tion in the intestines of allbabies who had colic, acondition characterized byuncontrollable crying.
“We believe that thebacterium may be spark-ing an inflammatory reac-
tion, causing the gut in-flammation,” said Dr JMarc Rhoads, a pediatricsprofessor and the study’slead investigator.
“Inflammation in thegut of colicky infantsclosely compared to levelsin patients with inflamma-tory bowel disease,” hesaid.Babies without colichad more types of bacte-ria in their intestines, asign that certain types ofbacteria are beneficial topeople, Rhoads said.
Colic, which causes anotherwise healthy baby to
cry and scream often andfor long periods withoutany noticeable reason, hasno medically groundedtreatment or known cause, although bottle-fed babiesseem to get it more oftenthan breast-fed infants, ac-cording to the study.
Also, colic could possi-bly lead to other gas-trointestinal conditions inlater life, such as irritablebowel syndrome andceliac disease, the studysaid. The condition oftendisappears as suddenly asit presents itself.—Xinhua

DES MOINES, 9 Aug — Loud outbursts, hot tempers and pleas for civility at townhall meetings around the country on Sat-urday foreshadowed a long, hot August asDemocratic lawmakers returning homefaced resistance to proposals to reform thenation’s costly health care system.
At a meeting in Des Moines, Sen TomHarkin of Iowa, was interrupted severaltimes by people in the audience shoutingcriticism and questions, even though hesaid he didn’t expect Iowans to take partin what he called “scare tactics, misinfor-mation and obstruction.”
“As we have seen in recent days, op-ponents are pulling out all stops to kill thereform effort. This is a shame,” Harkin said.
But his words didn’t stop some in theestimated crowd of 200 from disrupting
the meeting, where uniformed police offic-ers were present. Des Moines police said noone was arrested.
At one point, a man from the audienceyelled: “This is not health reform, this is con-trol, control over our lives.”
Harkin responded to one man shoutingcriticisms by saying, “As I said, there is anationally coordinated effort to disrupt thesemeetings.” The man responded that no onehad sent him to the meeting.
Similar exchanges have recently takenplace at town halls nationwide, as Demo-cratic lawmakers return home for the Au-gust recess to rally support for PresidentBarack Obama’s top domestic priority —revamping a costly health care system thatleaves millions without insurance.

High time to rise from fantasyKo Myanmar
Everyone has their dreams and they have theright to fulfil their dreams. Here, they are required totake care in realizing their dreams but not at theexpense of others.
I would like to present a well-known tale that isabout the experience of a young monk who indulgedhimself in a fantasy, while giving a massage to thepresiding abbot.
In his fantasy, the monk thought that the abbotwas at the old age, so the abbot might present the silkrobe a rich disciple had offered him recently to himas he always gave him a massage; that if so, he shouldnot use the robe as it was very expensive; that so hewould leave the religious order after getting rid of therobe; that he would make an investment in a businesswith the money he would gain from sale of the robe;that later, he became to get on with his business andgot married to a woman; that then he enjoyed eco-nomic development with a paddy field and got chil-dren; that one year he gained a bumper harvest ofcrops, and in the end of Buddhist retreat, his wife, hisbaby and he went by bullock cart to the monastery tooffer a bag of rice and a tin of edible oil to the abbot;that at a uphill site on their way, the bullock cartmoved quickly, and unexpectedly the baby his wifewas holding in her arms dropped off the cart; and thatthen he was angry and struck his wife’s nape with hiselbow for her recklessness …
While giving a massage with his two elbowsover the nape of the abbot, his fantasy went too farand he accidentally hit the abbot’s nape with hiselbow.
So, the abbot reminded him, saying, “Hey, hey, monk, the one who is negligent is your wife, but theone who hurts in his nape is me.”
Then, he was shocked and frightened and ranaway as the abbot knew all of his fantasy.
Similarly, some are indulging themselves intheir fantasy; some, in the fantasy of the 2010 elec-tion; and some in the fantasy to disrupt the 2010election.
I also have heard of a clandestine scheme toincite mass protests taking advantage of Daw Suu’scase.
It seems to me that a budget allotment has beenpassed for a project. Some expatriates are makingrally cry and showing off their prowess going aroundthe world. They are like a drunkard Po Htwar whostays inside the house while he is broke, but when hehas some money, he is drunk himself into oblivionwalking with a stagger along the street with his
longyi (nether garment) around his shoulder and usingbad language.
I learnt from a foreign radio broadcast that a so-called veteran leader of 1988 mass protest as well as anex-BCP UG who a western country provided fertilesoil said that he was very active in all the protests; thattheir revolution has been mature enough; that he wouldtake a leading role in the forthcoming protest; and thathe had contact with internal networks.
In the website he has put on the Internet, he saysregarding underground activities that when the crowdtake to the streets, do not take frontlines; watch and seethe conditions staying a little distant from the crowd;go into hiding as soon as possible if the situation is notfavourable; never let yourself caught; take the last seatwhile taking a bus in order that no one can shadow you;you can carry on the revolution only if you are notarrested; it is important to leave others in the lurch; andask the persons you have organized and dear-devilsfrom your ward to hold the flag in the frontline of thecrowd.
So, I wonder what sort of frontline so-called de-mocracy activists will take. It seems to me they willtake the frontline or front row in front of TV to watchthe programmes when Myanmar sees riots, or they willdeceive the people into taking to the streets, and createanarchic riots across the nation, and when the admin-istrative machinery of the government is no longereffective, and the government of democracy activistsis formed, they will rush back to the nation fromabroad to take the frontline.
While the renegades are with the hope of comingto power, sacrificing the lives of others, a group ofpeople in the nation are plotting to seize the power.Their tactics are that they make unreasonable demandsto persuade the people to take to the streets, using
monks as a human shield. Then, following the prac-tice of hunter Sonuttho, they plan to shoot with anarrow through the body of Elephant King Hsaddanwhich is like the country and seize the tusk which islike the power and hand it over to Queen CulaSubhadda.
According to their first-hand experiences, to-day’s people know very well that internal and exter-nal power-craving elements are just plotting to cometo power, exploiting and making as the stepping-stone the people who they claim they love so much atthe expense of national interest.
In fact, the entire people and members of theSangha except those who are completely under theinfluence of covetousness, envy, ill will and animos-ity know well that every time Myanmar sees attemptsto seize power through mob rules and anarchic sensecause untold miseries, and harm the life of the people.
As the saying that goes “Happy with what otherstell”, some are indulging themselves in the fantasy ofgetting rich, thus bothering themselves. That does notharm others much, so it can be said that is not too bad.
It is rather foolish of those, who are power-craving with the hope of coming to power one wayor another by stirring up unrest and deceiving thepeople into their schemes, to create strong negativeimpact on the entire nation. They should have real-ized that their plants will never come to fruition inpractice.
In reality, they do not have their ways blocked tothat degree at which they have no choice but toprovoke public outrage and use violent means tocome to power. They have an opportunity to come topower by organizing the people, recognizing theirtrue desire through the election to be held in accord-ance with the constitution approved with the supportof the vast majority of the voters.
So, they should have chosen a peaceful way todemocracy to win the heart of the people so as to servethe public interest, instead of unfair means to seizepower, sacrificing the people. If so, that will bebeneficial to all, the nation, the people and them-selves. I wish they gave up the fantasy of coming topower through the conspiracies that pose great threatto the nation.

State used to be a village. Now, it has been urban-ized as a result of theTatmadaw government’sdrive for nationalreconsolidation.
Seeing Mandalay-Myitkyina Railroad andS h w e b o - M y i t k y i n aRoad, Hopang enjoyssmooth transport.Hopang in Mohnyin Dis-trict is the closet regionto Indawgyi region, witha distance of only 27miles between the tworegions. Mogaung is 40miles north of or an over-one-hour train drive fromHopang. Phakant andLonkhin, the lands ofjade, are accessible fromHopang. On our wayfrom Mohnyin toMogaung, we dropped inHopang.
Now, Hopang hasbecome an affluent townwith all characteristics ofa town such as fine roads, markets, houses and largebuildings. It sees a goodnumber of sites wherebuildings are under con-struction, which reflectsthe arrays of urbaniza-tion.
When asked aboutregional development,Head of Hopang General
Administration Depart-ment U Khaing Min toldthe Myanma Alin, “Ourtownship is constitutedwith four wards, eight vil-lage-tracts, and 22 vil-lages. It was upgraded to atown from a village on 1October 2002 due to peaceand progress. Now, ourtownship’s developmentin the health care, educa-tion, communication andtransport sectors is far be-yond the developmentlong ago.”
Head of Hopang In-formation and Public Re-lations Department DawMya Tin conducted ournews crew round the town.On arrival at the basic edu-cation high school, we sawa new two-storey build-ing under construction. We learnt that in 2009, the
matriculation pass rate ofthe school was 40.94 percent, and many of the suc-cessful candidates weredistinction winners. Now,the youth of the town haveeasy access to education.
Next, we proceededto Nantyin Creek cross-ing wooden bridge thatlinks Hopang and HsinboTownships. Daw Mya Tinexplained that due to thewooden bridge, it had be-come very convenient forlocal people to travel be-tween Hsinbo Township
and Hopang; that previ-ously, local people ofHopang had to passthrough Myitkyina whenthey traveled to HsinboTownship; and that then,it took passengers onlyabout two hours to travelto Hsinbo Township.
An itinerary took usto Hopang People’s Hos-pital, which used to be astation hospital. Now, ithas been upgraded to a16-bed facility providingbetter health care to localresidents.
On a visit to HopangMicrowave Station, welearnt that it was put intocommission on 28 July1998; and that Hopangauto exchange equippedwith 700 exchange phoneswas opened on 18 Febru-ary 1996, and cellularphone line providing serv-ice for 527 phones, on 28April 2008.
Hopang’s main busi-ness is agricultural farm-ing. Now, it has launchedthe practice of growingpaddy two times in a rainy
season to achieve its goalof being the fourth gra-nary of Kachin State.Other businesses includejade mining in Phakantand Lonkhin, gold min-ing and trading goods.
Thus, it is no exag-geration to say that thecollaborative efforts thegovernment, the peopleand the Tatmadaw havebeen exerting earnestlyhave plucked up Hopangobscurity from.

BERLIN, 9 Aug—Ateam of European and USresearchers say they'regetting closer to alteringpancreatic cells to pro-duce insulin to cure Type1 diabetes.
Altering cells to pro-duce insulin would helpdiabetics metabolizesugar and reduce or elimi-nate the need for daily in-sulin injections, the LosAngeles Times reported onSaturday.
A team of scientists ledby Patrick Collombat, aresearcher at the MaxPlanck Institute for Bio-physical Chemistry inGermany, reprogrammedpancreatic cells in dia-betic mice by activating a
gene known as Pax4, theTimes reported.
In mice trials, Pax4converted cells that nor-mally made a hormonecalled glucagon into cellsthat made insulin, the Eu-ropean and US research-ers wrote in the journalCell. For reasons un-known, the gene therapyworked best on mice lessthan 1 month old, com-pletely counteracting thesymptoms of Type 1 dia-betes, Collombat said.
Future trials are to fo-cus on how to activate thePax4 gene and then turnit off so it doesn't producetoo much insulin,Collombat said.

BALTIMORE, 9 Aug—Aset of powerful cells inbladder tumors seem tobe responsible for thecancer growing andspreading elsewhere, scientists in Baltimoresaid.
The findings couldhelp researchers developnew ways of locatingand attacking similarcells in other types ofcancer, scientists atJohns Hopkins Univer-sity School of Medicinesaid on Friday.
Scientists have longsuspected that a subsetof cells in canceroustumors act much likestem cells, which spurorgan development early
in life and remainpresent to repair orreplace injured andaging tissues, Dr DavidBerman reported inthe July issue of StemCells.
The power cells foundin bladder tumors aresimilar to stem cells, with both having an un-limited lifespan and apropensity to migratethrough tissues.
If scientists had a wayto identify and targetcancer cells with theseproperties, the popula-tion that sustains tumorsand makes them growcould be eliminated,Berman said.
