The Epiphany (Page 160 BCP) O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory

face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Lesson (Old Testament): Isaiah 60:1-6, 9

In our Old Testament lesson the prophet envisions the end of exile and the glorious res-

toration of Jerusalem.

Psalm 72

The psalm asks that God endow the king with compassionate justice and righteousness

and that his reign may extend over all nations and throughout all generations. To him

shall kings from distant lands bring gifts.

Second Lesson (Epistle): Ephesians 3:1-12

Here is set forth the great theme of Paul’s apostolic commission: the revealed mystery

that Christ’s salvation extends beyond Judaism to include all peoples.

The Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Our Gospel is the story of the wise men from the east, who, guided by a star, come to

worship the child born to be king. Despite the wicked plotting of Herod, the Magi are

able to bring their gifts to Jesus without betraying his exact location. Early Christians

found in the rich symbolism and motifs of the story the fulfilment of both Old Testament

prophecy and the dreams of many peoples. The meaning of this birth, amid terrifyingly

human circumstances, enlightens and transcends human history.

I am looking for persons to form an Altar Guild, with specific reference to looking after the linens and items used at the altar. In previous years persons were allocated a month to help with the washing of the linens. Many of these persons have died and the burden now falls on a few persons. If you are interested in this particular ministry, kindly give your name to the Rector, or indicate your willingness to help in this important area. This will be followed by a meeting to put these efforts and ideas in place.

Persons with monthly envelopes are asked not to throw away the boxes in which these envelopes were distributed. The company has not supplied us with boxes for next year. Please keep the boxes to place your new monthly envelopes in.

This Child secretly comes in the night, oh, this Child, hiding a heavenly light, oh, this Child, coming to us like a stranger, this heavenly Child.

This Child, heaven come down

now to be with us here,

heavenly love and mercy appear,

softly in awe and wonder come near

to this heavenly Child

This Child, rising on us like the sun, oh, this Child, given to light everyone, oh, this Child, guiding our feet on the path-way to peace on earth.

This Child, raising the humble and poor, oh this Child, making the proud ones to fall; this Child, filling the hungry with good things, this heavenly Child.

We three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we travel afar,

field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star:

O star of wonder, star of night,

star with royal beauty bright,

westward leading, still proceeding,

guide us to the perfect light!

Born a King on Bethlehem's plain, gold I bring to crown Him again: King for ever, ceasing never, over us all to reign.

Frankincense for Jesus have I, God on earth yet Priest on nigh; prayer and praising, all men raising: worship is earth’s reply.

Myrrh is mine: its bitter perfume tells of His death and Calvary’s gloom; sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in a stone-cold tomb.

Glorious now behold Him arise, King and God and sacrifice; Heaven sings out, ‘Alleluia’, ‘Amen!’ the earth replies.

First Lesson (Old Testament): Isaiah 60:1-6, 9

Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Lift up your eyes round about, and see; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far, and your daughters shall be carried in the arms. Then you shall see and be radiant, your heart shall thrill and rejoice; because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. For the coastlands shall wait for me, the ships of Tarshish first, to bring your sons from far, their silver and gold with them, for the name of the LORD your God, and for the Holy One of Israel, because he has glorified you.

Psalm: 72 (as found in Hymns Ancient & Modern)

1. GIVE the King thy judgements, O God : and thy righteousness unto the King’s son. 2. Then shall he judge thy people according unto right : and defend the poor. 3. The mountains also shall bring peace : and the little hills righteousness unto the people. 4. He shall keep the simple folk by their right : defend the children of the poor, and punish the wrong-doer. 5. They shall fear thee, as long as the sun and moon endureth : from one generation to another. 6. He shall come down like the rain into a fleece of wool : even as the drops that water the earth. 7. In his time shall the righteous flourish : yea, and abundance of peace, so long as the moon endureth. 8. His dominion shall be also from the one sea to the other : and from the flood unto the world’s end. 9. They that dwell in the wilderness shall kneel before him : his enemies shall lick the dust. 10. The kings of Tharsis and of the isles shall give presents : the kings of Arabia and Saba shall bring gifts. 11. All kings shall fall down before him : all nations shall do him service. 12. For he shall deliver the poor when he crieth : the needy also, and him that hath no helper. 13. He shall be favourable to the simple and needy : and shall preserve the souls of the poor. 14. He shall deliver their souls from falsehood and wrong : and dear shall their blood be in his sight. 15. He shall live, and unto him shall be given of the gold of Arabia : prayer shall be made ever unto him, and daily shall he be praised. 16. There shall be an heap of corn in the earth, high upon the hills : his fruit shall shake like Libanus, and shall be green in the city like grass upon the earth. 17. His Name shall endure for ever; his Name shall remain under the sun among the posterities : which shall be blessed through him; and all the heathen shall praise him. 18. Blessed be the Lord God, even the God of Israel : which only doeth wondrous things; 19. And blessed be the Name of his majesty for ever : and all the earth shall be filled with his majesty. Amen, Amen.

Bidding Prayer

Let us kneel in homage as we pray to God, the Kings of Kings.

We offer our richest gifts of prayer and praise, knowing them imperfect but trusting in the holiness of Christ to make them holy…As the Wise Men were led by a star to Bethlehem, so guide your pilgrimChurch to worship in holiness and bow down in adoration until the time when your purpose is accomplished.

Give wisdom to the rulers of this world, that they may see the light of truth and follow the way of peace…Let them not be moved by fear or envy; make them ready to see you in what seems small and unimportant, so that their power is used not in pride but in service.

As we have known the joy of Christmas and rejoiced in the gift of the Holy Child, may we now bring to him our gifts of love and reverence…Make our lives, in our families and in all our meeting with others, tokens of the treasures that in our hearts we offer to the Lord.

Look with mercy on those whose journeys through the world are long and who can see no

that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you, how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; that is, how the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace which was given me by the working of his power. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places. This was according to the eternal purpose which he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and confidence of access through our faith in him.

The Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: `And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'" Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
