This document has been updated and amplified; to see this document all together and updated, visit: http://spir-food.blogspot.it/2015/02/the-neocatecumenal-mass.html. In January 2015, I, Father Joseph Dwight, posted on the Web (http://wordbelife.blogspot.it/2015/01/spiritual-food-1501.html; http://wordbelife.blogspot.it/2015/02/spiritual-food-1502.html) and sent the following two emails to over 100 people in the Neocatecumenal Way for whom I had tried to help for about ten years here in Italy, from 2005 to 2015.I have been helping out with the Holy Masses and the Penitential celebrations with you for almost 10 years. I had mentioned to you a few times that I knew that your statutes had been approved a few years ago, but the way in which you celebrated the Holy Mass was not yet approved and that Pope Benedict had formed a commission to examine the Holy Mass celebrated in the small groups Saturday evening among the members of the Neocatecumenal Way. I believed up to only a few days ago that this commission had not finished their work before Pope Benedict had left the papacy. A few days ago I discovered that instead the commission had finished their work and the three founders of the Neocatecumenal Way - Kiko Argüello, Carmen Hernandez and Father Mario Pezzi – had received a letter on December 1, 2005 written by Cardinal Arinze, the prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Liturgy with a list of “decisions of the Holy Father” to which they were to obey.Visit: “THE NEOCATECUMENAL MASS”; the Web reference for this article, as well as other articles written by Father Joseph Dwight, can be found at: http://josephdwight.blogspot.com.

*he following is the printed letter that I had planned to gi'e out aturda e'ening at two neocatecumenal asses! Januar 1A! 2015:
Dear brothers and sisters of the Neocatecuenal counities,
I ha'e been helping out with the Col asses and the Denitential celebrations with ou for almost 10 ears. I see a lot of good will and good fruits. Drecisel for this reason I offered mself e'en to the point of offering two Col asses e'er aturda e'ening with ou! and the Denitential celebrations whene'er ou called me.
I had mentioned to ou a few times that I new that our statutes had been appro'ed a few ears ago! but the wa in which ou celebrated the Col ass was not et appro'ed and that Dope +enedict had formed a commission to e=amine the Col ass celebrated in the small groups aturda e'ening among the members of the (eocatecumenal )a. ! belie"ed u# to only a few

?f the si= points detailing the pope6s directi'es! onl one permits the (eocatechumenals to continue what the are doing. *his regards placing the e=change of peace before the offertor! a traditional practice in the 4hristian liturg which is still in use toda! for e=ample! in the 9mbrosian >ite celebrated in the archdiocese of ilan. 9ll the other points reOuire the (eocatechumenal )a to eliminate a large portion of its liturgical inno'ations.
Our Holy Mother Church see%s to hel# and #rotect the ecclesial o"eents  in order not to loose the gifts that the Col pirit has gi'en to each mo'ement. +eing part of the "ocolare o'ement since 18! man times I heard from the mouth of 4hiara @ubich that she followed immediatel and totall e'er small indication from Dope John Daul II! e'en if she had to change her important programs. @ie the saints and good religious! 4hiara @ubich trusted totall in ,od! not in herself! and thus she belie'ed that if she obeed the Dope! her superior! after she e=pressed well her thoughts! e'en if she was not in agreement with the decision of the Dope! she did the hol will of ,od. If the Dope trul made a mistae! according to ,od! the Dope will most liel change his idea! precisel because 4hiara @ubich obeed. Cumilit and obedience cause the graces of ,od to gush forthN If what 4hiara @ubich belie'ed was right was trul right according to ,od! ,od will tae care of the problem! and to change the idea of her superior! in ,od6s own time. *he first criteria of discernment regarding pri'ate re'elations is precisel humilit and obedience $<isit: *he 4atholic 4hurch and Dri'ate >e'elation% http://pri'-re'.blogspot.com&. 4ertainl! the responsibilit of superiors is greatN <isit: *he ,reat >esponsibilit of >eligious @eaders $http://3osephdwight.wordpress.com/201/0/0A/great-responsibilit/ &.
At the be$innin$ of a o"eent the 4hurch offers a period of obser'ation as well as certain 'erbal authori;ations! as Dope John Daul did with the leaders of the (eocatechumenal )a. *hen afterwards other 4hurch guides us for our true good and for the true good of the ecclesial mo'ement. The Truth will a%e you freeN $Jn :72&.
*he recall of +enedict K<I regards the was in which the neocatecumenal groups celebrate the ass. *he Dope wants them to conform to what is prescribed in the liturgical norms 'alid for the whole 4hurch.

&e))i did not obey the letter  in which were articulated the directi'es of the Dope. *heir act of  partial obedience is in a letter which the wrote to the Dope on Januar 1A! 200. *he limit themsel'es in fact to than the Dope for ha'ing conceded to them another two ears of time. 9nd the return to defend their wa of doing the communion. *he underline that to do the communion in this wa is an essential instrument to con'ert the ones further awa from the faith: to abandon this would compromise their mission. ?n this crucial point of the communion the indicated that the want to follow their wa. It is in fact the diffuse opinion among the neocatecumenals that the letter of 9rin;e was something pro'isionar! modifiable! a simple instrumentum laboris! and that in the end their practice will be substantiall appro'ed. *his opinion persists e'en after the recall of +enedict K<I regarding the rite of the ass! in his tal gi'en to the neocatecumenals on Januar 12 200.
In an case! this is not the thought neither of 9rin;e nor of the Dope. !n an inter"iew on *ebruary
+, -../, on 0atican 1adio! the cardinal prefect for the congregation for the liturg reasserted that the letter is the conclusion to e'erthing. In this wa he e=plained the process from which the letter originated:
*he letter flowed out of what emerged from the e=amination of this congregation of how the  (eocatecumenal )a celebrates the Col ass for man ears. P *o e=am this we had a mi=ed commission among people nominated from the (eocatecumenal )a and people nominated b our congregation. In the discussions emerged man practices which the do during the ass! P and man emerged which were not according to the appro'ed boos. *his is the bacground. B'erthing was e=amined in man sessions b the mi=ed commission during a period of two ears or more. 9nd there was also a discussion among se'en cardinals of the >oman curia! desired b the Col "ather! who e=amined e'erthing. *hus! this letter is the conclusion to e'erthing.

I am to inform ou of the Col "ather6s decisions.
In the celebration of the Col ass! the (eocatechumenal )a shall accept and follow the liturgical  boos appro'ed b the 4hurch! without omitting or adding anthing. "urthermore! in regard to some elements the guidelines and clarifications are emphasi;ed as follows:
1. unda is the #ies #omini as the er'ant of ,od Dope John Daul II wished to illustrate in the 9postolic @etter on the @ord6s #a. *herefore the (eocatechumenal )a must enter into dialogue with the diocesan bishop in order to mae it clear that the communit of the (eocatechumenal )a is incorporated into the parish e'en in the conte=t of the liturgical celebrations. 9t least one unda  per month! the communities of the (eocatechumenal )a must participate in the Col ass of the  parish communit.
2. 9s for an admonitions issued before the readings! these must be brief. 9dherence must also be shown to what is set out in the Institutio ,eneralis issalis >omani $nn. 105 and 12& and to the Draenotanda of the ?rdo @ectionum issae $nn. 15! 18! 7! 2&.
7. *he homil! because of its nature and importance! is reser'ed to the priest or deacon $cf. 4ode= Iuris 4anonici! can. In this document! sections 2 and 7 of article 7 read as follows:
Q2 - It is permitted to ha'e a brief instruction that helps e=plain better the liturg that is being celebrated! and e'en! in e=ceptional circumstances! a few testimonies! as long as these conform to the liturgical norms! are offered on the occasion of Bucharistic liturgies celebrated on particular das $for seminarians! the sic! etc.&! and are thought trul helpful as an illustration of the regular homil deli'ered b the celebrating priest. *hese instructions and testimonies must not assume characteristics that might cause them to be confused with the homil.
Q7 - *he possibilit of Rdialogue6 during the homil $cf. #irectorium de issis cum Dueris! no. & can be used occasionall and with prudence b the celebrating minister as a means of e=position! which does not transfer to others the dut of preaching.

. ?n the e=change of peace! permission is granted to the (eocatechumenal )a to continue using the indult alread granted! pending further instructions.
5. ?n the manner of recei'ing Col 4ommunion! a period of transition $not e=ceeding two ears& is granted to the (eocatechumenal )a to pass from the widespread manner of recei'ing Col 4ommunion in its communities $seated! with a cloth-co'ered table placed at the center of the church instead of the dedicated altar in the sanctuar& to the normal wa in which the entire 4hurch recei'es Col 4ommunion. *his means that the (eocatechumenal )a must begin to adopt the manner of distributing the +od and +lood of 4hrist that is pro'ided in the liturgical boos.
. *he (eocatechumenal )a must also mae use of the other Bucharistic Draers contained in the missal! and not onl Bucharistic Draer II.
In short! the (eocatechumenal )a! in its celebration of the Col ass! should follow the appro'ed liturgical boos! eeping in mind what is laid out abo'e under the numbers 1!2!7!!5! and .
9cnowledging the fa'ors that the @ord has bestowed upon the 4hurch through the man acti'ities of the (eocatechumenal )a! I tae this occasion to e=tend to ou m best regards.
