Helping the N.C. Zoo From the Inside OutDuring 2009, the Zoo Society managed, thanks to the help of so manygood friends, to net $4.7 million for the Zoo. This record-breaking sum rises to $5.4million when the Zoo Society’s 2009 investment income is added to that total. Thankyou for making this success possible.

The Society reached this milestone because you—our closest friends anddonors—remained loyal to your Zoo even while a difficult and turbulent economyengulfed North Carolina. We use this document to report openlyand honestly about your gifts and about the ways that we used your donations tosupport the Zoo and carry out the missions of the Zoo and the Zoo Society.

Savinga Piece ofthe World forits Wildlife

The largest single gift the Zoo Soci-ety received last year arrived as a $2million pledge from an anonymousdonor. The pledge, which will be paidover the next 20 years from a Chari-table Lead Trust, will support the Syl-van Heights Waterfowl Society. TheZoo Society began its support of Syl-van Heights in 1997 in response to arequest from the Association of Zoosand Aquariums and the N.C. Zoo,which wanted to provide SylvanHeights with enough financial sup-port to maintain its world-renowned,captive breeding programs for rareand endangered species of water-fowl. Currently located in ScotlandNeck, NC, Sylvan Heights has flour-ished with continuing support from

the Zoo Society. SylvanHeights still maintains itsaward-winning avian prop-agation center, and itrecently opened an adja-cent ecopark that exhibitswaterfowl and other birdsto the public. The exhibitsshowcase more than 170species of ducks, geeseand swans from aroundthe world.

During 2009, Sylvan Heightsexpanded this ecopark by adding twonew exhibits. The first, a wheelchair-accessible treehouse, hosts many ofSylvan Heights’ public education pro-grams and includes a viewing blindthat overlooks the second new addi-

tion, a 5-acre, forested wetland. Thiswetland features a mixed collectionof waterfowl, cranes and otherspecies of birds and is banked by aviewing blind that conceals visitorswhile they steal amazingly-closeglimpses of these birds.

Donations for Places Outside the Zoo

Several major gifts in 2009 supportedprojects inside the Zoo. One of thesearrived as an estate gift from Dr.Anton Schindler, a distinguished for-mer scientist and friend. Dr.Schindler’s estate left more than $1million to the Zoo Society. The firstdispersal from his estate, a donationexceeding $200,000, arrived in 2009with the promise that additional gifts,totaling more than $1 million, wouldbe forthcoming in 2010.

Dr. Schindler directed his gifts tofund operations of the Valerie H.Schindler Wildlife Rehabilitation Cen-ter, the Valerie H. Schindler WildlifeLearning Center and the Zoo’s pachy-derm breeding programs. During hislifetime, Dr. Schindler was a primaryfunder for both the Learning and theWildlife Centers, which were named inmemory of his beloved wife.

In 2008, VF Corporation donated$15,000 that we used last year tooperate the Schindler Wildlife Learn-

ing Center. This Center housesstudents and guests attendingZoo educational programs. During2009, the Center took in 35 internsfrom 11 colleges and universities andone veterinary hospital.

Other major gifts to theZoo Society in 2009 supported Project: Polar Bears, a campaign tofund improvements to the Zoo’s exist-ing Polar Bear exhibit. It must beupgraded to meet new standards foracquiring Polar Bears from Canada.Because the Zoo’s two Polar Bearsare nearing the end of their lifetimes,the Zoo must meet these standardsquickly to be ready to secure new,younger bears when necessary.

Combined gifts from the Zoo Soci-ety’s Board of Directors provided morethan $250,000 to Project: Polar Bears.The Society staff donated another$21,000 toward this project. Other significant 2009 gifts included !

Donations for Places Inside the Zoo

$150,000 from Talmadge and Ian Sil-versides, $25,000 gifts from the John Wesley and Anna Hodgin Hanes Foun-dation and from Peter and Ona Pickensand $10,000 from Fran Young. Localcounty and city school children addednearly $9,000 by conducting a Penniesfor Polar Bears campaign.

When the Zoo Society kicked offProject: Polar Bears on October 28,Executive Director Russ Williamsannounced that the Society hadalready raised $1.2 million toward its$2 million goal. This total included$200,000 from Bob and Bonnie Meekerto add artistic and interpretive elementsto make the exhibit more educational

and interesting. At the time of thiswriting, the ZooSociety has raisedmore than $1.625million for Project:

Polar Bears. The State of North Car-olina remains committed to providing$2.7 toward this project.

RTI International also joined the listof funders who will make major futurechanges inside the Zoo. Under theleadership of Earl Johnson, Jr., RTIpledged $300,000 to build a trainingand research facility in the Zoo’s kid-Zone Exhibit. This facility will housefuture programs that the Zoo’s educa-tion staff will use to awaken children tothe wonders and joys inherent in nature. The programs will train teach-ers to use nature and the outdoors to inspire and educate children.

Touchstone Energy ElectricCooperatives and RandolphElectric Membership Corpora-tion gave $50,000 and $10,000,respectively, to add interpretivegraphics to the new picnic pavil-ion, Solar Pointe.

Getting DeeperInside the ZooA year-end What’s, Up Doc? fund-raising campaign earned more than$54,000 to buy much-needed diagnos-tic equipment for the Zoo’s VeterinaryHospital. A key factor in this campaignwas the pressing need to replace a veterinary endoscope that had failedearlier in the year. This loss left veteri-narians without a key diagnostic tooland forced them to call in equipmentand staff from the N.C. State School ofVeterinary Medicine for needed proce-dures. The costs in time and money

In 2009, the Zoo opened several exhibits that received allor most of their funding from private donations to the ZooSociety. One of these, the Honey Bee Exhibit, opened inMay. Gifts from the North Carolina State BeekeepersAssociation, the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation,The Donald and Elizabeth Cooke Foundation, and others, raised $240,000 to underwrite this exhibit.

Art patrons and Zoo supporters Bob and BonnieMeeker saw several of their past, major investmentscome to fruition in 2009. A $200,000 gift from the couplein 2007 culminated in the opening of an artistic replica ofa geyser next to the Zoo’s Bison Exhibit. Painted toresemble a series of boiling mud pots and equipped withfountains that intermittently surge and shoot skyward, thegeyser sculpture gushes and subsides to mimic thespectacular displays real geysers gush out in YellowstoneNational Park.

A 2008 gift from the Meekers realized its potential in2009 with the opening of Acacia Station—a treetop view-ing platform that takes visitors eye-to-eye with the Zoo’sherd of five giraffes. Acacia Station opened in May andgives visitors the most spectacular view yet of the Zebra,Ostrich and Giraffe Exhibit.

In 2008, the Meekers provided yet another gift to fundthe creation of an educational video that explains andhonors the professionals and the professions of thosewho manage the Zoo and the Zoo Society. Staff workedwith a video production company throughout most of

2009 and into 2010 to complete this video. Called TheN.C. Zoo from the Inside Out, the video offers an educa-tional and entertaining look inside the N.C. Zoo. Thepride and gratitude the Society feels for this videoinspired us to include it as a gift tucked inside this annualreport. It is our way of thanking our most generousdonors for their support of the Zoo.

Society funding continued to supportseveral long-term education programsorchestrated by Zoo and Zoo Societystaffs. Most notable of these programsis Field Trip Earth, a second-generation,interactive Web site that launched in2002 as a descendent of two similarWeb sites (The Elephants of Cameroonand The Red Wolves of Alligator River)that the Zoo and Society developed in1997 and 1998, respectively.

Managed by Mark MacAllister, theZoo Society Online Learning Coordina-tor, Field Trip Earth, in the tradition setby its predecessors, follows conserva-tion researchers as they work in thefield to protect African Elephants, Hell-benders, Gorillas, sea turtles and otherforms of wildlife.

In 2009, the American Association ofSchool Librarians named Field TripEarth as one of the top 21 educationalWeb sites in the country. The awardplaced the site in league with Websites operated by NASA, Google Earthand Edutopia. Field Trip Earth servesclassrooms in all 50 states and in more than 140 countries worldwide. Wall earned a notable accolade in2009, too, when The Association ofZoological Horticulture presented herwith its first Lifetime Award (The ChuckRogers Conservation Award). Theaward acknowledged Ms. Wall's per-sistence in promoting the valuable rolehorticulture plays, and should play, inzoological institutions.

GlaxoSmithKline and High Point

Community Foundation donated$10,000 and $5,000, respectively, toKeepers in the Classroom. This well-established, outreach education pro-gram sends Zoo staff into schools toinspire students and help them see theconnections between nature, quality oflife and scientific understanding. In2009, Keepers in the Classroom trav-eled to 50 classrooms to serve 1,922students.

In the second year of a two-year$50,000 grant cycle, KidsConnect!used $12,500 of Dell’s 2008 gift of$25,000 to buy Dell computers forlibraries in Greensboro, High Point andForsyth County. The grant provideslibrary outreach workers and other staffwith training to use these computersand the Internet to help develop com-petency skills in under-served children.KidsConnect! served about 300 stu-dents during 2009 and culminated inan August event that brought them andtheir families to the Zoo. During theirvisit, participants gave presentations onthe projects that they were proud tohave completed during the year.

NCCAN! (North Carolina Childrenand Nature Coalition) affiliates with theinternational Children & Nature Net-work to help children reconnect with !

At the request of the Zoo Director, the Zoo Society made a substan-tial change in its investment portfolio in 2009 by using some stocksas collateral to purchase a 270-acre stretch of land that sits next tothe Zoo. After buying the land, Zoo Society Executive Director RussWilliams worked with state and local governments to push forwardthe transactions needed to allow the City of Asheboro to undertakea satellite annexation of this property. The land, like the Zoo prop-erty, now sits inside the city limits of Asheboro and has become asite for field work and education programming. The Society will con-tinue to hold the property as a long-term investment that may besold in the future or, perhaps, used for future exhibits or facilities.

Drawing the Outside to the Insidemade the purchase of new equipment a toppriority of the veterinary staff. As always, theZoo Society’s members demonstrated theircompassion and concern for the Zoo’s ani-mals by providing the funds veterinariansneeded to keep the Zoo’s animals healthy.

The Zoo’s spring fund-raising campaign toraise money to improve the Giraffe holdingarea and prepare it to accommodate a breed-ing program proved equally successful. Thiscampaign raised over $53,000. That campaignalso introduced Zoo Society members to theZoo’s growing herd of giraffes, which nowconsists of two 3-year olds, two 4-year oldsand a 30-something matriarch, Julie, who isone of the oldest Giraffes in the world.

nature. NCCAN!, which operates underthe Zoo Society, launched a Web sitein October, sponsored by the FoodLion Foundation, and accepted a$7,500 donation from the Sierra Clubto bring Richard Louv, author of LastChild in the Woods, to speak at thisevent.

The Zoo’s Veterinary Staff and theZoo Society joined ranks in 2009 tolaunch two new initiatives that nettedabout $18,000 for Zoo Veterinaryneeds. The first raffled off a chance forthe winner and a friend to shadow aZoo veterinarian for a day. The winnersummed up her experience in a thank-you note that said, “Thank you againfor the most extraordinary day I’veexperienced in years…I have alwaysbeen proud of our Zoo, but I’m posi-tively bursting at the seams with prideafter watching you and all the Zoo stafffrom behind the exhibits. Every personI met believes strongly in the impor-tance of his or her work. Our Zoo ani-mals could not be in better hands.”Proceeds from the raffle supported theZoo’s Conservation Medicine Program,which researches ways to alleviatehealth problems affecting rare andendangered species.

The second Society/Veterinary part-nership organized three Science Campsfor 12-to-15 year-old children interestedin becoming veterinarians. Nearly 100students applied to the camps, whichhad openings for only 60 children. Mostof the proceeds will fund veterinaryinterns working in the Valerie H.Schindler Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

Other significant funding for theWildlife Center arrived from a Childrenof the American Revolution Project, ledby Catherine Horne, and from our loyalCommunity of Caring members, whodonated $16,500 toward the Center’soperation. Ms. Vivian Ring, Bob & Bon-nie Meeker and Mary P. Stephenson allmade significant contributions withinthis group.

Sending InsideInformation OutsideThe Zoo Society upped its connectionsto its friends and fans by launching aFacebook page and a Twitter accountin 2009. By the end of 2009, morethan 600 people had enrolled as ZooSociety Fans on Facebook and 300people were following our Tweets. During 2009, the Zoo Society’s registered lobbyist worked closely with statelegislators, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and theN.C. Office of Management and Budget to hold onto funds that the Statepromised the Zoo in 2008 for repairs and renovations to the Rocky CoastExhibit, for construction of the Plains Barns and for bonds to support thePolar Bear project. The Society is very pleased to have helped the Zookeep this important funding during a time when the State of North Carolinaand its citizens are facing so many financial difficulties. We applaud Gover-nor Purdue and the Legislature for recognizing the important educationaland economic contributions offered by the N.C. Zoo and for adopting along-term view in protecting these resources. We are grateful for the State’scourage and foresight.

The Society received another welcome boost from the state’s corporatecitizens, who continued to show their support for the good works and bene-fits provided by the Zoo. During 2009, the Zoo Society’s Corporate Mem-bership program grew, despite the difficult economy.

Zoo To Do For the tenth consecutive year, RandolphTelephone generously acted as the Signature Sponsor for Zoo To Do,

an annual dinner, dance and auction organized by the Zoo Society and bythe Randolph Friends of the Zoo. The “Do” 2009 marked the 26th year of this

premier event. Nearly 900 people gathered at the Zoo for this gala, which raised$125,000. Most of these proceeds will be used to support Project: Polar Bears.

Partners for Wildlife Zoo Society events in 2009 included twoother evening events, Migrating Feasts for the Beasts, to acquaint potential donorswith the remarkable—but often under-praised—conservation work that various Zoostaff members carry out every year. The events highlighted the work of these Zoo

researchers and invited the evenings’ guests to consider becoming supporters of these and similar endeavors. With generous support from the Proia family

and other donors, we raised $21,500 that will support the Zoo’s field con-servation and research programs. Donors who contribute $1,000 or

more to this program are invited to join this special group of ZooSociety members who care deeply about conservation. "
