ORIGINAL DIAGNOSIS: "Arbor 10m. alta, foliis 13-18 cm. longis et 6-8 cm. latis, corolla 15 mm. longa, petalis 3-4, anthera 4mm. longa."

Added to this there is a long and detaileddescription, and a good and detailed illustration. Hence, there is no need to printanother illustration.

SUPPLEMENTARY DESCRIPTION: Blades 8-18cm long, 4-8 cm wide, oblanceolate tooblance-elliptic, above glabrous, below puberulent throughout and puberulent tuftedin the basal axils of the secondary and thetertiary veins; stipule tube 5-6 mm long, the

lobes 2 mm long, broadly deltoid, the 3(-4)corolla lobes 3.5-5 mm long.

Degener states in his diagnosis that theflowers are 15 mm long; and in his description that the corolla tube is 8 mm long, andthe lobes 7 mm long. On the contrary, hisdetailed figure shows the tube 5-6 mm long, and the lobes 5 mm long. The corolla isfleshy and it shrinks on drying. The driedflowers on the holotype have the corolla tube5 mm long and the lobes 3.5-5 mm long.

DISCUSSION: From more numerous recentcollections, it is now known that the varietyis also arboreous, so Degener's sole diagnostic character no long holds. However, thetree has differences in leaf pubescence, in thestipule tube, and in the corolla lobes. Itsrange largely coincides with that of thespecies, but because of its several differencesin morphology, it is here raised to the rankof a variety.

DISCUSSION: The new epithet is given inhonor of Edward Yataro Hosaka (19061961), a former student of the writer's, andassistant, or agronomist at the Bernice P.Bishop Museum, and the University ofHawaii. His taxonomic and ecologic exploration and publication on Kipapa Gulch is aclassic in Hawaiian botanical literature.

west Maui Island, Waikapu, W. Hillebrand& 1. M. Lydgate, ex herb. Lydgate (BISH). Ofthis there are three sheets, one labeled"Hamakua," and two labeled "Waikapu orHamakua." Hillebrand selected them asduplicates and sent them back to Lydgate inHawaii. These were part of Hillebrand'sbasis for his M. trimera, but they all haveglabrate blades, and it seems clear that theywere a part of Lydgate's collection fromWaikapu in west Maui. The writer is selecting the Lydgate collection with the bladespuberulent beneath, from Hamakua (BISH) asthe lectotype of M. trimera Hbd.

Morinda sp.In the Bishop Museum is a solitary collec

tion by J. M. Lydgate from Kauai thatseems to be a native member of the genusMorinda. Since it lacks inflorescence andfruit, it is not capable of preciseidentification.
