SCHEDULE FOR DX NEWS,. . We now resume weekly publication of DX NEWS and will continue on a weekly schedule until the middle of spring. We a r e making a slight adjustment in the t iming of DX NEWS production, necess i ta ted by the fact that Page Taylor can only work on IDXD on Sunday. We will complete composition of DX NEWS when Page 's section a r r i v e s on Tuesday o r Wednesday; copy goes to the pr inter the same day. Th i s means the other edi tors have a n additional day to get copy to HQ each week. Edi tors should continue to m a i l sections to HQ via Special Delivery.

MECHANICAL FILTERS, FINALLY !

Kokusai h a s modified the distribution procedure for the i r excellent minia ture mechanical f i l t e r s (descr ibed a t length in past a r t i c l e s in DX NEWS) and we will now be able to obtain them direct ly f r o m a state-side representa t ive without having to go through a l l of the delay and red-tape we've experienced in the past when we've dealt d i rect ly with Japan. The p r i ce i s even lower th i s way, too! HQ i s now purchasing a batch of these excellent 2.1 kHz units ( for r ece ive r s with 455 kHz I F frequency only) fo r r e s a l e a t cost to the membership. P r i c e i s $15. 00 pe r fi l ter, p lease specify if fo r vacuum tube o r t r ans i s to r receiver. The f i r s t batch will probably be a t HQ by the t i m e you read this; we will f i l l o r d e r s the same day they a r e received.

REPORT FORMS AND STATIONERY, TOO.

Reception repor t f o r m s a r e now available to NRC members ; m o r e deta i ls will be found e lsewhere th i s issue. We a l s o now have stationery in stock; two color printing with the NRC emblem. P r i c e i s $2.35 for 100 sheets, postpaid.

DAYTIME DX INFO REQUESTED.. . As we'd hoped, our r ecen t a r t i c l e s on the l imi ts of midday DX have s t i r r e d up some interes t in th i s interesting but neglected area . P ro fesso r Ray Bell of the Physics Department a t Penn State h a s sent along a copy of a technical paper he'd published in 1937 in which he'd measured daytime signal strengths in an attempt to verify the groundwave equations. He naturally observed midday skywaves but apparently none fu r the r away than expected on the basis of the mechanisms desc r ib - ed in GPN's r ecen t article. He's checking h i s old r ecords fur ther for useful data. Bengt Er i c son in Sweden has checked midday reception t h e r e and a repor t will appear soon. We would like to a s k our membersh ip - especially the old- t imers who listened in t h e good old days before the R F pollution real ly hi t - to check the i r logs fo r long distance midday receptions. Remember , by midday we mean the period f r o m 10:OO AM through 2:00 PM local t ime a t the midpoint of the signal path. P lease send whatever data you can find to GPN a t HQ and he'll include i t in a future ar t ic le .

NEW MEMBER KITS.. . The l a s t remaining problem f r o m the f i r e which destroyed much of HQ lasr yaaz i s New Member Kits; the stocks on hand were los t and we've been slow in replacing them due to the p r e s s u r e of publication workload, production of the Pa t t e rn Book and Domestic Log, etc. We're sti l l working on NMK's - the recent abbreviation l i s t appearing h e r e in DXN i s pa r t of that effort. Any typing volunteers with carbon ribbon typewri ters willing to help u s out? *GPN, BGK, CDP

cases the correct ions themselves appear to have been in e r r o r ; in the event of contradictory information we have used the m a s t e r copy for the upcoming new NRC Domestic Log a s the final reference. We will continue to welcome fur ther

additions o r correct ions and Pat tern Book updaters will appear on an i r r egu la r bas i s h e r e in DX NEWS.

CFRB's claims exaggeration, engineer says . Wil k The Globe end Mail

MISSISSAUGA - A sugges- tion that development In MI> sissauga nil1 put radio station CFRB out of bu-iness is ;In exaggeration. town council's general committee was told yesterday.

George Mather. a consulting engineer hired by thctown to investigate Lhe claim, said the radio station's concern that proposed hlgh-nse develop mrnt in the Clarkson area

ple: CFRB Ltd. ma). in the not too distant luture. be re- quired to reduce or even eli- minate entirely the radio sig- nal lrom i b transmitker In t ' w town of hlississauga. In other words. CFRB may be forced out of business. tll? CFRB brief says.

..The reason for this I to Usl ominous Statement is the threat to our signal patlcrn caused by the proposed con- struction of tall bu~idings in

~.. could put them out of business b e c a u s e o f i n t e r f e r e n c e around its Mississauga trans- mitting station was valid."

I A report by Clire Eastwood. I

a professional englneer corn- ' mission* by CFRB says ':the / colutructlon of tall bulldlngs / in CFRB's strong-field area could result in a revocation of ! the station's licence."

The t om ' s Lakeshore Com- munity Study proposes mas- slve revdentla1 development which would increase the pop- ulation of the Ciarkson-Lome Park area l o 10 times the present 6,500. The F R B brief to council says ttus would be detrimental to its 0peratiOnS. l t as& that buildings pro- posed near the transmitter be , limited to 30 feet in h e i ~ h t : and that others proposed for Lakeshore Road, about two miles east of the transmitter site, be kept to a height of 35 feet.

"The problem is quite sim-

no other sites xhere it could suitab! its transmitters.

The radio station is re- quired by tile Departmenel Communications to restr:ct Its s~gnal radiated in certain directions In order to protect thc signals of other stations.

The rcport says that be- cause of international. agree- ments, the directionalpattern -.--

used by CFRB a t night is vety critical.

"The partion of ' this signal that is re-radiated in the p r h tected directiolls is the rob lern since the s ca t t e r ez s i i 11al 'would cause CFRB to vio- late its commitments under I t - ~ ~

cence.' According to Mather, how-

ever, a report on which CFRB reached its conclusion On re- . radiation is not valid in t h k argument.

Creetings.and solutions. As of t h i s wri t ing (12/31) the NRC l og copy has been rec'd in Boston during t h e past week. A l l three DX s ta t ions from me t h i s time done not on my usual HQ-150, but t he s e t I or ig inal ly s tar ted serious DXing with: a Fisher &FM Stereo Tuner (vintage 19601, which I ' m resurrecting fo r possible s a l e ( s l a g w/ accompanying power amp) or use a s a backup rx u n t i l I can scare up t h e $$ fo r another 150 or other communications rx. I f anyone is interested i n the Fisher and i t s paver amp; I ' l l be asking in the neighborhood of $175-200 f o r both. A l l tuner-preamp f u n c t i m s ok. W i l l work over power amp soon, but no major problems with it either. Ant- f o r t h i s run the 2' loop, but w/no amps a s one i s out of commission temporarily. Was only giving the Fisher a run th ru i t s paces t o check it out when t h i s stuff hrd. Latest item of 3 a lso on 150.
