CHARLIE!

I want to thank Judge Ron Sacca for honoring Charlie with the title of National Best Of Breed and National Grand Champion. Words can never come close to describing what this means to me. Learning that Charlie is the first American Eskimo Dog who has been awarded the NBOB, NGRCH and is also a Total Dog means the world to me, as I believe this wonderful breed is capable of excelling in all events. At not even 2 years old yet, Charlie has far succeeded my expectations and only pushed me to train harder to achieve new goals. Perhaps we will

reach for the stars and try for the Super Dog! Thank you to two wonderful friends and mentors, Mary Ellen Eichelberger and Diana Allen for making this litter possible. I wasn’t originally going to keep a boy and am sHe touches me in a way that the relationships with my other dogs don’t come close to. Our bond only strengthens with our training and I look forward to moving on to his obedience career. He has

pleasantly surprised me with two Rally Obedience High in Trials his first two weekends in the ring. A thrilling first for us! His early success gives me hope for a promising obedience career. We definitely have a long way to go but it is fun to think about. When life puts the hobby on the back burner, the

thought of getting ready for a dog show is often more than one can bear. This was how Nationals was for me this year. Having been through several stressful months starting with an acute illness of my mother, the last thing I wanted to do was get ready for a dog show. I’m so glad I did as I had a wonderful time. The love and support received from so many exhibitors touched me in a way I’ll never forget. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. So many of you have influenced my thoughts on the sport of pure bred dogs. The knowledge learned has influenced my breeding program and goals that I have for our future. Special thanks to friend, Valerie Piltz, who encouraged us in our training and gave us hope in shooting for our first Total Dog Award. There is no looking back now! NAEDA  –  The  Scoop  Winter  2011

FROM YOUR BOARD President 2011 has been an eventful year for NAEDA with the passage of the ballot measure which requests the United Kennel Club recognize a third variety in the American Eskimo Dog Breed Standard: two proposals were passed by the General Membership at the 2011 National Meeting. The first proposal included the designation of a Toy Variety, which includes dogs measuring 9 to less than 12 inches and bitches measuring 9 to less than 11 inches. The second proposal was to allocate points to the toy variety similar to the combination of awarding points to the miniature and standard varieties. A third proposal to add single tracking to the gait section was approved by NAEDA General Membership vote in 2008; however, it was apparently not forwarded to UKC for approval. A letter summarizing the Toy Variety ballot measures and the single tracking language was sent to UKC on November 15th and a confirmation of receipt by email was received on November 22nd. My contact at UKC, Ms. Vicki Rand, indicated that at least three departments would need to be consulted on the Toy Variety proposals, and although she expected to have the first meeting between the departments conducted before the end of the year, we could expect the processing of the proposal to take several months. I realize that many members who have dogs who could be shown under the proposed Toy Variety, are anxious to have an opportunity to compete in the 2012 show schedule. Since we have now formally introduced the changes to UKC, I would ask all those who are interested in the progress of the UKC review to be please patient. I have asked UKC to keep me posted on the progress of the proposed changes. I believe it is important that the NAEDA Executive Committee, which is responsible for supporting and sponsoring any proposals approved by the General membership, have the primary voice on this matter. For those who are interested in contacting UKC directly with good intent, I would ask that you postpone the calls, emails, posts and/or letters until the Executive

Committee hears back from UKC and can report to you the progress on the proposals.

Vice-President I want to start off by thanking the Washington American Eskimo Club, for a wonderful job in hosting the 2011 National show & meeting. The site was well situated for the event. The space for the show was great, and the meeting room was just what we needed. The dinner Saturday night was wonderful, I'm sure that everyone was able to eat their fill, I know I did. I know that some of the things they had planned, didn't pan out, but wasn't because of their not trying. 2011 has been a busy and trying year for the NAEDA. There has been many changes with it being a voting year with some new officers coming in, thankfully we still have some of the old officers on board to help with transition. At long last we were able to get the toy petition passed, and sent on to UKC for their approval. We of course don't know how long it will take them to give us the final answer, as to rather they will accept it or not, but it is in their hands now. We as breeders of this wonderful breed need to encourage our puppy buyers to join their local clubs and the National Association. We have lost a couple of clubs this past year, and in doing so have lost members. Someone said that we might let the club in the location of where we place a pup know of them and see if they have any interest in joining. I think it's a wonderful idea. Till next time, hope everyone has a wonderful, safe & happy Holiday Season.

Secretary SURPRISE! I’m back. With the withdrawal of the individual running for secretary and the National meeting being in Minnesota for 2012 I decided to stay on as secretary for NAEDA for 2 more years. I am hopeful that everyone can turn a

new leaf and that the next 2 years will be less stressful then the last 6 years… I do hope that all of the new members for 2011 choose to stay on as members in 2012. NAEDA needs people to stay involved as we are only as good as our members make it. Advertise in the newsletter, sponsor a trophy, join a committee, and come to the NAEDA National Show in Minnesota in 2012! I hope with the newsletter going to twice a year big format again that folks will resume their advertising. It really helps to defer the costs of sending out the newsletter. PRESIDENTS- Please pay special attention to the meeting minutes where we are asking for a CURRENT list of all of your officers AND for a copy of your active by-laws. Please forward those to me via email so we can make sure our records are up to date. We would like a copy of your by-laws so we can keep all the member organizations together in one place. Remember every time you have elections and elect a new board we need a new list sent to us.

Corresponding Secretary First I want to congratulate the Washington Club for a wonderful National and congratulate all of the winners. I would also like to thank the National for awarding a plaque to me for my 20 years of consecutive service as a National officer. It was a very nice surprise. This time, since I have been showing dogs in the UKC for over 20 years, I thought I would write about some things I have observed over the years. When I first started showing my eskies back in the 80’s, there was much camaraderie. By this, I mean that we all got together in our areas and discussed what shows we were going to, who we were taking, who could ride with whom, and who all would be sharing motel rooms. Back then, we saved a lot of money by traveling together or meeting at the motel and sharing rooms. Now it seems this practice has changed somewhat. Maybe it has to do with campaigning for the Top Ten, maybe it has to do with the fact that people just don’t want to travel in groups anymore, but it seems harder and harder to make a

champion class. It seems almost impossible to find out where some people are going and even though the price of gas is sky high, riding together has pretty much become a thing of the past. Sharing motel rooms is still popular somewhat, but I remember when we would do anything to save money and five of us would stay in a room with 2 beds. Today, usually two of us stay in the same room or we stay alone. Where has this camaraderie gone? Then, it seemed we all ate dinner together after the show, even the judges. We had a great time, and, no we didn’t think it was fraternizing, and we didn’t think that just because we all ate together, that the judge would put us up the next day. Sometimes we lost, sometimes we won, but we didn’t care, we were with good friends having fun. I understand that in this day and time, many judges don’t even know each other, much less the exhibitors, so this one thing has truly become a thing of the past. Now, it seems it is about the almighty blue ribbon, or the Top Ten points, or the Best In Multi-Breed Show. Sure, all of those things are wonderful, and that is what we show for, but it shouldn’t be what we go for! What I mean is, shouldn’t dog showing still be for the friendships we make, the enjoyment of just sharing a weekend with your dog and your friends?

Debbie Mitchell [email protected]

Parlimentarian I'd like to take a moment to thank the membership for entrusing me with the office of Parliamentarian; I will endeavor to do my best in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this office in an unbiased manner and in adherence to our Bylaws and Robert's Rules of Order. The office of Parliamentarian is unusual in the NAEDA in several ways. It is responsible for ensuring the rules and Bylaws are followed at all meetings (including electronic meetings) of all bodies of the Club; whereas usually this position has only an advice-offering duty upon query. It's interpretations of those rules and Bylaws are binding on all present at such meetings (in person or electronically), and there is no procedure in place for appealing an "interpretation". And the

Page 6: The NAEDA SCOOP · and gave us hope in shooting for our first Total Dog Award. There is no looking back now! Diane Cowles Nordic Whispers American Eskimos and Past Presidents of the

NAEDA  –  The  Scoop  Winter  2011

Parliamentarian is an actual Executive Committee member with voting rights, rather than simply an impartial advisor to the President. These provisions are generally the opposite of what Robert's Rules of Order state, but a Club is certainly allowed to do that in its Bylaws, as the Bylaws take precedence over Robert's Rules. In any event, I would be interested in hearing from long-timers in the Club as to why this position was set up this way. Please email me at [email protected] or call me at (208) 794-9572 to educate me as to the history behind this. While I'm not inclined to initiate a major overhaul of this position without the membership's desire to do so, I do feel that the current arrangement provides too much power to the Parliamentarian, with no checks and balances in the event those powers are abused or if the Parliamentarian's binding "interpretations" are severely flawed (other than removal from office by a two-thirds vote of the Board). I also believe that any change to this arrangement is going to require an amendment to the Bylaws, as any procedure otherwise put in place would end up conflicting with the Bylaws. Speaking of Bylaw amendments, there are several provisions that should be tightened up. There are a few small inconsistencies, some conflicting provisions, and also some fairly ambiguous provisions that end up being subject to interpretation which I am sure we (the membership as a whole) didn't foresee being a problem until recent years' events brought them to our awareness. However, Bylaw amendments require a two-thirds vote, so if we are going to take on this task, we would need to be together on it. Something to think about.

Publicity Director I never thought that I would have to write this apology but, unfortunately, once again I put too much trust in people. Months ago I volunteered to find a photographer for the National, which was to be hosted by our local Washington club. We were also holding a club show before the National date so I thought it would be a good idea to try out a new

photographer that I had met at local AKC shows. Richard of Maritime City Photography talked a good game. I had seen some of the professional ads he had done and they were excellent. We used him for our June show and the pictures were wonderful. We booked him for the 2011 National in Vancouver. He gave us a great deal, was to send a cd of all photos to me for the Newsletter and web, and promised to have everything delivered quickly. Almost three months later, no one has received their photos, multiple emails and calls have been sent but there has been no communication with Maritime City Photography. The following was received via email on Dec. 5th. Dear Customers, This email is to update you on the status of your shipment. Our mass shipment was sent out at the end of October to our shipper. Unfortunately, due to circumstances regarding a contract dispute and a change of ownership change at the shipper, the several shipments, including yours, were lost in the process. We were only made aware of this in the last few days after being recently informed of our customers not receiving our shipments. (MANY emails were sent in the previous weeks with no acknowledgement – Barb) We are have reprinted, packaged, and are reshipping everything. Local orders will be delivered by MCP personnel to expedite the order. Thank you for your continued patience. We are sorry for your inconvenience. Maritime City Photography As of Dec. 15th everyone still waits for the photos! I can’t apologize enough to people who purchased pictures. These memories are precious to us and we have been denied the pictorial evidence. I hope that eventually we will receive our orders, but for the purposes of the Newsletter and web – I have no photos, except some candid shots that I took myself. If I ever get the National win shots, I will include them in the newsletter and post them quickly on the web. I am so sorry!

Treasurer The older I get the faster time seems to fly so where did 2011 go?! Wow! In reflection, 2011 has been a good year for NAEDA from my office position. We’ve had good participation in trophy sponsorship and had Michigan send us some trophies that we could re-use and we were happy to do that in WA this fall. We’ve had good membership numbers and I’m hoping that continues into 2012. As the year comes to a close here at our house I always try to reflect back on the dogs who have departed over the year. This year we lost three: Robbie, Omar, and Shania. All three were very, very special to me and were building blocks in our dog breeding program. We lost them, one a week, during the terribly hot late July and August

weather. Although our kennel is air conditioned, I think the drastic difference between inside and outside was a contributing factor in their loss. Sadly, sometimes when we do all we can for our dogs it just simply isn’t enough and there’s nothing more we could have done. Dues for 2012 have not changed. If you are a member of the National through your local affiliated club, please pay your dues to your club and they will forward me the National portion of your dues. If you are a member at large you may send the dues directly to me. All dues for 2011 expire on 12/31/11. Have a Happy New Year and I’ll hope to see many of you along the way at dog shows!

NEED YOUR INPUT UKC has asked NAEDA for assistance in updating the test questionnaire used in licensing AE conformation judges. Members are invited to send possible questions or ideas to Barbara Davidoff at [email protected]. Ideas related to the proposed breed standard changes would be especially helpful. The original request from UKC was for NAEDA to prepare a response by the end of January, however, due to the importance of having accurate questions, we have requested and have been granted an extension. Please respond by email by February 15th so the Executive Committee can compile, review and forward our ideas to UKC in March.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING – OCTOBER 22, 2011

VANCOUVER, WA Meeting called to order by the President, Bob Brekke at 2:50 p.m. A quorum was established by the number of voting members present Secretary’s report – approval of minutes - as published in the last newsletter. Motion by Debbie Mitchell, 2nd by Barbara Davidoff. Approved unanimously. Treasurer’s report – Sally was unable to attend, so Barbara Davidoff read the following report from Sally: As of 10/19/11 - $8987.87 – Cash net operating account As of 10/19/11 - $2403.53 – Rescue account. Total number of members was 222. Report of officers: President – President Bob Brekke stated that he felt the Association President needs to be more active in making major decisions. He also felt that there should be guidelines for making Breed Standard Proposals. Bob stated that he believed we should return to the printed form of the newsletter. Bob stated that the

Page 10: The NAEDA SCOOP · and gave us hope in shooting for our first Total Dog Award. There is no looking back now! Diane Cowles Nordic Whispers American Eskimos and Past Presidents of the

NAEDA  –  The  Scoop  Winter  2011

Association gave too much power to the Parliamentarian, that the position should be revamped in case an overruling of a decision was necessary. Rescue – Nancy Basham was unable to attend, but sent the following report. A portion of the rescue funds went to Sue Lunsford to help with Anna Powell’s dogs. We also donated money to help the dogs in Cobb County, Georgia. Heidi Halverson stated that she had a thank you note from Sue Lunsford. Nancy helped with the placement of a 12 year old dog in Arizona. Jim Binick thanked her. Further discussion on rescue fund: Trophy Committee – As Sally Bedow was unable to attend, Barbara Davidoff gave the report in her place. Barbara stated that we only had 11 trophy donations for this show. We need to work to assure that many, if not all trophies are donated for the show in Minnesota in 2012. Canine Health Foundation – Bob Brekke. Bob state that the President receives a letter from Purina regarding the weight circles. Judges Review Committee – Sally Bedow sent a report that the NAEDA had not received any requests for sponsorship from judges this year given by Heidi Halverson. Karla Cole Junior Showmanship Recipient (Trip to Premier Show) - There were no applicants last year. Diane Cowles explained that it took her son three years to become comfortable in Junior Showmanship. She proposed that we take Junior Showmanship out of it and open it to a Junior who happens to want to show an Eskie that they own in the regular classes, so we are promoting our breed, but not everyone is going to have the confidence and self-assurance it takes to go into the Junior Showmanship ring, so Diane had another suggestion. She suggested that we take Junior Showmanship out of it and open it up to any Junior that wants to show their dog in the regular classes. Someone asked that isn’t the whole part of the Junior Showmanship is the learning, and also, that the judge questions the junior to find out their knowledge in regard to dog anatomy, etc. Debbie Mitchell stated that as a judge, when you judge the Champion class you are judging the champions, you are not judging that junior. When a judge judges Junior Showmanship, you are judging the children, you are not judging those dogs. It does not matter about the quality, or how good the dog is. You are judging the ability of the junior to handle that dog. Diane Cowles said that her son got more confidence, more respect for the breed, and more love for the breed showing in the regular classes than he did showing in Junior Showmanship. She stated that are we about the breed or are we about Junior Showmanship? Someone stated we are about both. Bob stated that when this came up last year, no one seemed to know where the guidelines are for the applicants. The committee was to come back to the BOD with recommendations of those specific things which would probably have the latitude of going in the direction Diane is wishing to go unless this group here wishes to continue its discussion on the matter. He is perfectly willing to continue this under new business. He is not trying to cut off the discussion at this point, but it was a report that was to be made to the BOD. Dick Kortemeier stressed the fact that Junior Showmanship was geared toward families, wherein the family may have 1-3 children in that family. Dick stressed that he did not think any club, even the National, should charge for Junior Showmanship. Oklahoma, Northeast Texas nor Arizona charge for juniors. Vada Binick suggested that we make a policy stating that we do not charge for Junior Showmanship. Jim asked that if he understood correctly that there was no committee report at this time, and Bob clarified that there was not. The committee report is for the BOD not the GM meeting. Futurity Committee Report – Barbara Davidoff stated that we had some problems. We had 2 families that did not realize you had to nominate a specific puppy within the 4 month time frame. Then there are people like Debbie and Barb that forgot to nominate their whole litter. Barb stated that she thinks we need to push it a little bit more. There were 3 nominations in 2011, 2 in 2010 and 1 in 2009. Some good breeders are remembering to do it, but we need to push it and get it clarified. She stressed that everyone needs to remember to register their litter. The money goes to Sally and is distributed at the Futurity but Sally did not attend, the money will be mailed out. Finance Committee – Jim Binick handed out copies of his proposal for the following years. Jim stated that the purpose of the Financial Committee is to assess the current financial position of the club and propose ways to

Page 11: The NAEDA SCOOP · and gave us hope in shooting for our first Total Dog Award. There is no looking back now! Diane Cowles Nordic Whispers American Eskimos and Past Presidents of the

NAEDA  –  The  Scoop  Winter  2011

make it more profitable in the future. Jim stressed that the National at Oklahoma was an unusual year because all the proceeds from the All Breed shows were given to the National which greatly helped out our entries. Jim stressed that the other thing we don’t have is a hard copy newsletter. Jim’s report was committed to a single breed show in 2011 and auction, but a multiple breed show in 2012 since Northern Lights has agreed to host same and donate the proceeds to the National. Jim also stated that Arizona has agreed to hold a multiple breed show in conjunction with the National in 2013 and donate the profits to the National, so the next two years look profitable for the National. 2014 depends on the venue and what our policies are at that point too. Jim gave alternatives for 2012 and 2013, one with a hard copy newsletter and one without a hard copy newsletter. It looks like we can go back to a printed newsletter but we would barely make it or be barely losing money, so he wanted to point out at this time that we have to take into consideration are we going to have other expenses that we currently do not know about or are there going to be other funds we need that we are not currently aware of. End of presentation. Bob explained about the Finance Committee. He stated that the job of this committee is to look at the expenses and income and suggest a budget to be voted on at the General Membership meeting. They would look at those items in more depth than the rest of us and that the committee is 5 regular members, 2 club presidents and at least one member from the GM and Exec. Board. This is not an audit committee but will work with the Treasurer if there are questions. Any expenditure over $1000 in excess of the budget must be reviewed by this committee to make sure the expenditure is financially feasible. 2 members will be selected for a 2 year term and the Treasurer will not be the Chairperson. Jim named the members as follows: Jim Binick, chair, Heidi Halverson, Sally Bedow, Sherry Myers, and Shane Groves and Bob is the adviser as the President. Educational programs – Will continue. Heidi said there would be a reproductive specialist from the Twin Cities, and maybe a handling seminar. Debbie stated that she was certain Diana would be happy to do a puppy seminar. Barbara stated that she thought the seminars were wonderful but the problem she has with them is that you are cramming so much into the 2 days. She doesn’t know what the solution is but she thinks seminars, shows, meetings, banquet and auction into 2 days makes some people pretty tired. Historian – Diana was unable to attend, but Bob stated that we need to continue to work on sending information from the NAEDA to her and Barb would like to archive it too on the website. OLD BUSINESS – Barbara Davidoff regarding the newsletter. Barb stated that it is still the same, do we or don’t we. We have 18 members who pay to get a printed copy. Barb has found a new place that is cheaper than what we were working with before. Barb spoke with Cindy Cwi, but she buys her stamps on line. Postage will remain to be a problem as postage is going up after the first of the year. She does not think people are reading it on line. We do not qualify for bulk mailing. Sherry Myers of Washington made a motion that the club do two hard copy mailings a year, the one before the National Show and the one after the National show giving the National results which would be Summer and Winter and the other two be on line versions. Barbara Davidoff seconded that motion. Dick Kortemeier asked about advertising and Barbara stated that the membership does not support the newsletter by paying for ads. Bob said the Motion is in order but it was scheduled under New Business and he wants to make sure that the Budget Chair is comfortable with this Motion. Bob stated that the Motion will be delayed until the Budget comes up under new business. Create a manual for clubs hosting the National show – Bob stated that there is a manual in place but it probably needs to be redone. Breed Standard Change Recommendation Proposal Results - Ginny Voit reported in Joe Allen’s absence. We got a total of 216 ballots returned. The results of admitting the Toy Variety and sending it to UKC: we had 151 votes for and 65 votes against. That passed with 2/3 majority. The other proposal concerning the points was 152 votes for and 64 votes against. That passed with 2/3 majority of the vote. Bob stated that because we had a breed standard proposal vote that was approved several years ago regarding adding of the words “single tracking” to the gait portion, that proposal was never submitted to UKC for their consideration. Bob would administratively direct that the people sending the letter to UKC include that proposition. Members at large Representation – Bob said that since we have a large number of people that are members at

Page 12: The NAEDA SCOOP · and gave us hope in shooting for our first Total Dog Award. There is no looking back now! Diane Cowles Nordic Whispers American Eskimos and Past Presidents of the

NAEDA  –  The  Scoop  Winter  2011

large, this should be addressed in the future. New Business: Election Results – Bob Brekke – we had one contest. First of all the person who had submitted for the position of secretary, Chris Wood, sent us a communication this week telling us he would not be able to fulfill the obligation of the job and withdrew his name. As soon as the new officers are seated, they will address what that means to the organization. They have a plan. So the only position that had a contest was for corresponding secretary and the results are as follows: Debbie Mitchell – 82 Tammy Powers - 49 A big hand was given to Bob. The new officers are President – Jim Binick Vice President – Virgina Voit Secretary – to be determined Corresponding Secretary – Debbie Mitchell Treasurer – Sally Bedow Parliamentarian – Lenise Redding Publicity Director – Barbara Davidoff Much thanks to Bob Brekke and Heidi Halverson for their service by Jim Binick. Bob reminded Jim that he was still in an advisory capacity as the past president. Jim said that with the seating of the new officers, we have to address the vacancy of Secretary. Checking the By-Laws, an appointment can be made for that vacancy. Jim would like to postpone that until the BOD meeting. He asked did we have an immediate need for the secretary at present. Since Debbie is doing the minutes, we do not need a secretary for the time being. During the BOD we will appoint a new secretary. Budget Discussion and Approval – The first order of business was the standing motion in regard to the newsletter of doing 2 hard issues and 2 on line issues per year. Since Jim cannot serve as the Finance Committee chair any longer, he did reiterate that he did feel doing 2 hard issues and 2 on line is doable and will entertain the motion at this time. Lenise Redding stated that unless we change the By-Laws we are required to send out a printed copy 4 times per year. Debbie Mitchell stated that in California, the printing right under that states that in addition to the publication as stated in A above, the NAEDA is free to utilize any and all available media to promulgate information on the American Eskimo. So, what they decided in California was that included the newsletter, so really A was in conflict with C, so they elected to go with C, and that is how we ended up with an on line newsletter. Lenise Redding does not agree that the ruling was correct, and not ruled according to the By-Laws. Bob Brekke stated that the Parliamentarian in California ruled that an on-line newsletter met the criteria of the By-Laws, and that it does not necessarily mean that we were incorrect in California by what we did, but that we need to relook at the issue. Lenise Redding re-read Article A per the request of Sherry Myers in Washington. Heidi Halverson stated that we as a club cannot afford to send out a newsletter 4 times a year, but if we go to a more simplified newsletter the other 2 times a year, put it in a envelope at regular postage, then we are still adhering to the By-Laws, and that would save the club money. Sherry Myers was asked how she felt about that as opposed to her earlier motion. Sherry agreed to amend her motion to the following: The NAEDA will send out hard copy newsletters that will include advertising, color pictures, etc. of the Summer and Winter issues and that the Spring and Fall issues will be limited to textual business updates and Executive Officer reports of the club. Seconded by Barbara Davidoff. Debbie Mitchell suggested that we go to our Feed Stores or Feed manufacturers and ask for an annual advertisement. That would help the cost of the newsletter. Jim Binick asked Lenise Redding if that would meet the requirements of the By-Laws. Lenise Redding said it would. Bob Brekke asked if the electronic archiving would continue and Barbara Davidoff said that it would. No other discussion regarding the newsletter. Jim Binick called for a vote. Motion passed unanimously. Heidi Halverson made a motion that the dues remain the same except for removing the charge for the hard copy

of the newsletter, seconded by Diane Colwes. Dues – Dues are currently the following: $20.00 per person that belongs through a club $25.00 per person at large $10.00 senior that belongs through a club $15.00 senior at large $5.00 – Junior that belongs to a club $10.00 – Junior Jim Binick called for a vote and motion passed unanimously. Junior Premier Sponsorship – Diane Cowles made a motion that we open up the Karla Cole Junior Premier Sponsorship to Juniors that are not entered in Junior Showmanship, but are showing dogs they own in the regular classes. Jim Binick stated that this proposal needs to be presented to the Junior Premier Showmanship committee and they can come to us with a recommendation as anything regarding money must go before the BOD. Any discussion regarding the current amount allotted must come before the BOD. Bob Brekke asked that due to the fact that we have had no applicants in the last two years, was the reason that the $500 was too low, or that the program needs to be extended as recommended by Diane Cowles to promote more participation. Heidi Halverson stated that we do not have that many Junior members and that was a big deterrent in addition to what we are discussing. Debbie Mitchell stated that we have 8 Junior members. Bob Brekke made a motion that we increase the funding for Junior Showmanship to $750.00, with a second by Dick Kortemeier. Bob stated that if the dollar amount wasn’t enough and if it doesn’t work, we will have to put more money it it. Jim Binick called for a vote. Majority voted for with one vote against. Rescue Program – Jim asked if there was any question as to what is happening with the rescue fund. Sherry Myers asked that was it correct that the Rescue Chairman be allowed to spend up to $500 and any amount above that must be approved by the Executive Committee. Anything above the $500 must be approved by the Executive Committee. Sherry Myers moved that the Chairman of the Rescue Fund be allowed to spend $750 a year and anything beyond that be approved by the Executive Board on a case by case basis. Seconded by Dick Kortemeier. Hearing no other discussion, Jim Binick called for a vote. Passed unanimously. Jim Binick stated that we will have some administrative things that we need to catch up on that will be some expenditures on incorporation and insurance as budget items. Bob Brekke stated that Joe Allen was going to propose that the NAEDA purchase a laptop for the Treasurer and the archiving. Heidi Halverson feels that this year is not the year to do this, but after the Minnesota show our Treasury will be a lot healthier then and she would like to postpone this to next year. Joe’s purpose was that the accounting program that we currently have is obsolete and Sally’s home computer does not have the capability to run the program or the memory to do so. Jim Binick did say laptops are not very expensive. Any further discussion on this will be during the budget discussion. Hearing none, this subject is closed. ALTERED DOGS – Heidi Halverson – Should Altered Dogs count for AE apprenticeship for new judges? When Heidi asked UKC if altered dogs counted in the minimum of three required for apprenticeship, they said no, but if the NAEDA tells the UKC that we will allow them to count, then they will. Heidi made a motion that we allow altered dogs to be included in the minimum amount of dogs to be allowed for an apprenticeship. Seconded by Dick Kortemeier. Jim Binick stated that the only thing he can see as different is that altered dogs carry more coat, but with the correct judges’ education you can encourage future judges to not consider the coat as a normal coat for an unaltered dog. Tammy Powers stated that many altered dogs shown today are champions or grands, so the quality would be the same. Hearing no further discussion, Jim asked for a vote. The motion passed unanimously. 2012 Annual Meeting Host Update – Heidi Halverson said that Minnesota is planning a wonderful show with a lot of fun things to do. If you don’t want to pay for a hotel, there are tons of Minnesota members that live in the vicinity that will open their homes for exhibitors. The show is about 30 minutes from the airport. The

banquet will be cheap and it will be catered. Bring bags of dog fur. They have a wonderful spinner that will spin the hair into items for you. They are striving to make this show as fun and as inexpensive as possible. Heidi had handouts so people could be aware of where the showsite is in relation to hotels and the airport. 2013 Annual Meeting Host Update – Arizona American Eskimo Dog Association by Jim Binick. They are still looking for a venue but they will find one. Jim said they are working on this and they are very excited because this is the first National that Arizona has had and they are getting ready staff wise and financially. Awards – AOM Dams to GR CH A W D’s Hello Dolly and Diane Cowles, “PR” Jazzies Lexy Baby and Robin Feldhouse, and to Awd’s Sadie Spirit of Daisy and Rob and Josh Brown. #1 dog to NBOB NGRCH GRCH'PR'Island's Mystic Stella Blue and Robert G. Brown or Gregory Mann. The last plaque was awarded to Debbie Mitchell for 20 consecutive years of service to the NAEDA as Corresponding Secretary. Other New Business – Jim stated that we have lost a couple of clubs such as Keystone and Florida and we are having difficulty keeping these clubs active. Jim feels NAEDA could do an outreach wherein we could assign a committee or a person whose job would be to contact the clubs on a regular basis and encourage them to stay active. We have breeders that place their dogs out of state. It would be this person’s job to contact these clubs, let them know who these new people are and ask that the local club contact them to recruit them as members. Debbie Mitchell made a motion that the person that should contact these clubs, and keep them active and getting new members to join would be Dick Kortemeier. Seconded by Lynn McClure. Jim stressed that if you have an out of state dog placed in your state, it would help to have those people encouraged to join the club and to also try to encourage the at large members to join local clubs. Jim recommends that Dick interview the more successful clubs to see what tricks that they are using too. Debbie Mitchell stated that we, as breeders, should contact Dick and let him know that we have placed a puppy in that state, so that he can contact that club and let them know that there is a potential member in their state with a new puppy. Also, breeders could offer an honorary membership to the club in the state in which the puppy is going. Heidi also suggested that we could include an NAEDA membership application in our puppy packets, which a lot of us already do. Dick pointed out that there are some states with enough at large members that could have a club of their own. They just need someone to help them take the bull by the horns and aid them in organizing the club. Hearing no more discussion, a vote was taken which passed unanimously. Dick Kortemeier did point out that our thoughts and prayers go with Tammy Nichols, a long time member as she awaits a liver transplant. Adjourned by Jim Binick at 5:00 p.m.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING –OCTOBER 22, 2011 VANCOUVER, WA

Meeting called to order by President Jim Binick at approximately 5:05 p.m. – Roll call vote – Quorum established by Debbie Mitchell. Jim Binick asked for a recess for 15 minutes while the Michigan proxy situation was discussed. This meeting was not part of the minutes. The BOD meeting reconvened at 5:20 p.m. with Dick Kortemeier holding Michigan’s proxy. Old Business – Jim stated the first order of business was to appoint a Secretary. Heidi Halverson had graciously agreed to remain as secretary for another two years. Tammy Powers was also interested in the position. Virginia Voit, Vice President was interested in learning more about Tammy Powers and asking her questions in regard to her qualifications prior to taking a vote of the BOD. Tammy stated that there was not a local UKC club in Cincinnati or Ohio. Virgina Voit asked her what her qualifications were for becoming secretary. Tammy stated that she is a manager of a supply chain. She has been treasurer for clubs, she has never been a secretary for a club, but she does manage 147 people in her

Page 15: The NAEDA SCOOP · and gave us hope in shooting for our first Total Dog Award. There is no looking back now! Diane Cowles Nordic Whispers American Eskimos and Past Presidents of the

current position. She is on seven different committees, the quality improvement team, the flow team, and The Children’s Hospital, so organizational skill wise she has have a lot of qualifications. Debbie Mitchell asked if she had any dog club experience. She is a member of the Claremont County Dog Club. Virginia asked if she had held any offices and she said she was a Trustee. Dick Kortemeier asked her if she was able to attend the upcoming shows. She said Minnesota was drivable and she didn’t see any issues right now with Arizona. Lenise Redding said that with her personal experience with Tammy, she was on the computer all the time. Virginia Voit asked her what duties she perceived the position of secretary involved. She assumed the Board meets monthly by teleconference. Tammy asked what the expectations of the Board would be. Jim Binick stated that we have two people interested in participating at a fairly intensive level. Jim stated that the person who receives the fewest votes will get the opportunity to serve on the finance committee which is very important also. Jim Binick then called for a roll call vote: VP – Heidi Treasurer – Heidi Parliamentarian – Tammy Publicity – Heidi Corresponding Sec – Heidi Arizona – Heidi Fingerlakes – Heidi Indiana – Heidi Michigan – Tammy Nevada – Tammy New England – Heidi Northeast Texas – Heidi Northern Lights – Heidi Oklahoma – Tammy Oregon – Heidi Southeast Texas – Heidi Washington – Tammy Wisconsin – Heidi Heidi Halverson – 13 Tammy Powers – 5 Heidi Halverson retains the Secretary position. Committee for Karla Cole Jr. Showmanship Committee – Committee members are: Sherry Myers, Diane Cowles, Rob Brown with Sally Bedow as an adviser. Sherry Myers reported that there was really no report and she suggested that we ask someone to take Sally’s place as she has enough to do right now. Barbara Davidoff volunteered to take Sally’s place and Jim said he would like a report within the first quarter and he would be happy to call Barb repeatedly on this. Sherry stated that the issues were sponsorship to the Premier but whether or not the Junior had to show in Junior Showmanship. It was reiterated that it has to be the Premier and they have to show an Eskie that is owned or co-owned by the Junior. Jim stated that he wanted for the committee to get their act together and we can discuss this later. Pat O’Donnell, Fingerlakes stated that the Junior Program set guidelines which contained the fact that you had to be a Junior member, that you actively participate as a National member, and co-own the Eskie with a relative or family member. Pat said that he and Mary Verness and his daughter Renee put it together and he feels we are getting away from what this committee was originally intended for. Jim suggested that the committee consult with Pat to see what he remembers and in the interim we will attempt to find the criteria. Debbie Mitchell said she may still have it and she will try to locate it. Jim said they will talk and meet in January to see where the committee is at that time.

NO OTHER OLD BUSINESS. NEW BUSINESS – Judges and show site fees for 2011 – Heidi Halverson. Judging fee was $750.00 and $750.00 for the show site which was allocated for 2011. Washington was thanked for covering the show site cost at no charge to the National. Heidi Halverson made a motion to continue $750.00 for the judge and $750.00 for the show site for 2012. Seconded by Barbara Davidoff. Roll call vote – passed with one dissenting vote. Annual Policy Review – Bob Brekke handed out copies of the policies for the club. Emergency Judge Replacement – Debbie Mitchell and Diana Allen. Debbie stated that she and Diana had discussed that, but with Diana’s absence, she asked that the NAEDA give them until January to complete a proposal. Dick Kortemeier thanked the NAEDA for writing a letter of apology to the Lone Star Toy Fox Terrier Club. Breed Standard Change Procedure Policy Proposal – The following procedure shall be used for considering breed standard change proposals presented by members of this association. Two members in good standing shall send a written breed standard change proposal to the president of NAEDA and refer it to the Breed Standard Contact Person, a person designated by the President. The Breed Standard Contact Person shall review the proposed standard change to make sure the language is complete to accomplish the proposed change to be approved by the submitting parties. Upon approval of the BOD the proposal shall be introduced to the membership through the newsletter. The following newsletter shall accept comments and questions about the matter to serve as an educational forum for members to learn about the merits of the proposal. The only published place for pros or con opinions shall be the national newsletter. The proposal shall be sent to the membership for a vote in accordance with the bylaws and if approved shall be sent to UKC for their consideration. The voting roster shall be the members in good standing the date the proposed change is sent to the BOD for approval to send to the general membership. The vote shall be counted in conjunction with the General Membership meeting following the ballot process. Submitted by Bob Brekke. Bob Brekke – Bob stressed that we take a look at this proposal and decide what we want to change, so that we will have a proposal in place the next time a breed standard proposal change comes up. Jim said he would like for everyone to review this and he would like to take this under advisement as he feels we need to have a procedure in place if and when another breed standard proposal change comes up. He feels we need a procedure to follow. Pat O’Donnell stressed that this will now go to UKC, but that we have to realize that whatever the outcome, this becomes a dead issue. He does not believe the NAEDA needs to keep making similar or reworded proposals on the same issue as you will never please everyone and the club does not need to keep spending thousands of dollars on the one issue. He wants to know if that is the way he understands it . If the UKC comes back to us and says no, we as an organization have to step back and say they need to go a different route, such as starting their own breed. Jim stated we don’t know what is going to happen. Jim said that if they say no, the members are free to bring breed standard proposals to us as long as they make sense. As a Board, we cannot exclude that, we can only act on the request. However, it is the Board’s responsibility now to be a protagonist. It is important that we have a line of communication with the UKC. Dick Kortemeier wanted to know who was going to write the letter and when it was going to be sent. Debbie Mitchell will write the letter, after approval by the Executive Board, Jim Binick will sign and send the letter prior to Thanksgiving. Jim will report in the newsletter what the UKC sends us in response. REVIEW OF OTHER POLICIES – Heidi commented that she would like an updated officer list from each club after this show and any time any club has an election. The policies says you are supposed to do this, so Heidi would appreciate it if all clubs would do this. Bob thinks every club should send the UKC a copy of their current By-Laws. Bob brought up the possibility of Friday night ballot counts, which would mean calling the meeting to order on Friday night. Jim would like for the Parliamentarian to review the By-Laws and policies and see if this is a violation.

Page 17: The NAEDA SCOOP · and gave us hope in shooting for our first Total Dog Award. There is no looking back now! Diane Cowles Nordic Whispers American Eskimos and Past Presidents of the

NAEDA  –  The  Scoop  Winter  2011

Jim also stated that in the future you will probably see the issue regarding the Parliamentarian position that should a ruling be rendered, is there an opportunity for checks and balances wherein that ruling can be over ridden by the Board or the Executive Committee. At present, the By-Laws are written wherein the Parliamentarian is the most powerful position, and Jim stated that the current Parliamentarian has no problem with the issue of overruling her ruling. As a Board, you will be seeing this in the future. Dick Kortemeier made a motion that we ratify the policies for the next 2 years. Sherry Myers seconded. If everyone is in agreement, this will be approved by unanimous consent. No one was opposed, so the motion was approved by unanimous consent. Finance Committee membership – Jim said that whoever was not secretary has a life time opportunity to become a member of the Finance Committee, so Jim asked that Tammy Powers be the Chairperson. Members include Heidi Halverson, Sherry Myers, Sally Bedow, and Candi Chamberlain. Tammy Powers asked when we were audited. She was told that we never had been. Tammy Powers asked if we could do an informal audit which the Treasurer has no problem with. It was agreed to do so. Heidi agreed that we do not have enough transactions a year to warrant an outside audit. Tammy has no problem with an informal audit. NO OTHER NEW BUSINESS. Comments for the good of the organization – Pat O’Donnell said that we have to remember we are here for the dog, not for personal gain. There are a lot of people out there that are all about I, I, I. Backstabbing of other breeders has to stop. If we are not a unit, why did we spend 3 hours in a meeting. We need to get together. Jim thanked everyone for being at the meeting. Bob was given a hand for the jobs he did as Parliamentarian and President. Motion to destroy the ballots by Heidi Halverson. Seconded by Sherry Myers. Approved by unanimous consent. Motion to adjourn – Debbie Mitchell Seconded - Barbara Davidoff Adjourned at 6:45 p.m.

NAEDA  –  The  Scoop  Winter  2011

There is a lot of debate over vaccines these days. Part of the problem is that people just don’t know much about the diseases that these vaccines prevent. Most people have never had any experience with them, which is good as that means the vaccines are working. As with everything medical, it is all about the risks versus the benefits. The risks are a hot topic these days with anecdotes abounding. No one seems to talk about the benefits though so here is a short synopsis of just what these disease are capable of. The diseases discussed here are all vaccinated for with the DHPPi+L vaccine (also abbreviated DAPP+L; he standard vaccine course, in my opinion. Distemper (Hard Pad disease) Causal agent: a paramyxovirus Signs: Fever, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, hardening of the foot pads and nose, neurological signs (muscle twitching, paralysis, seizures), pneumonia, death Old Dog Encephalitis: Occurs if the dog had distemper when young, signs include loss of coordination, pneumonia and compulsive movements such as head pressing and pacing. Treatment: Supportive only. No treatment if severe or progressive neurological signs. Infectious Canine Hepatitis Causal agent: canine adenovirus – 1 Route of transmission: urine, feces, saliva, found in wild animals Signs: worse in young dogs, fever, loss of white blood cells, inability to stop bleeding, apathy, loss of appetite, discharge from eyes and nose, vomiting, abdominal pain, neuro signs can develop but are rare, opacity of the eyes Treatment: Supportive only. Parvovirus Resistant to severe disinfectants, stable in the environment Two forms of the disease: Myocardial: seen in very young dogs, heart cell death, death, rarely seen now due to wide spread vaccination Gastroenteritis: lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, diarrhea (very distinctive smell), death Treatment: Supportive only. Reports suggest that death occurs in up to 48% of cases. Parainfluenza A component of ‘kennel cough’. Not generally a deadly disease but very common. Signs: Discharge from the nose, sneezing, pawing at the face, breathing difficulties, open mouth breathing, discharge from the eyes, reverse sneezing Treatment: Supportive only. Leptospirosis (Weil’s Disease, in humans) ZOONOTIC -> can be passed to humans and causes FATAL liver failure Passed in the urine, often of rats. Signs: Kidney failure (80-90% of affected dogs), fever, depression, loss of appetite, generalized pain, discharge from nose and eyes, jaundice, drinking and peeing more, pneumonia, abortion Treatment: Supportive only As you probably noticed, the problem with these diseases is that there are no specific treatments. All we can do is try and support them until their body can kick the infection. In some diseases, like parainfluenza, that normally works out fine, with the others, particularly leptospirosis and parvovirus, supportive treatment often isn’t successful. Many people often think that there is little risk these days since nobody sees these diseases anymore. The reason we don’t see them is because of wide spread vaccination. All of them still exist it wild animals, which means they can be passed to our beloved pets. But, as with everything, it is about weighing the
