Mini Lesson There are many musical tools

that can enhance the meaning and effect/sound of a poem.

– Rhyme (internal and external)

– Repetition (beginning lines with same word, repeating a line throughout, beginning and ending with same line)

– Onomatopoeia– Alliteration– Consonance– Near or Slant Rhyme

Mini Lesson

Some musical tools that may be less familiar

Onomatopoeia: – Words in a poem sound like

what they mean as in “pop” or “slap.”

Alliteration: – Initial consonant sounds are

repeated to make another type of musical rhyme.

Consonance and Slant Rhyme

Writer’s Work Time

1. Go to Step 3 of the Online Classroom.

2. Watch DD and JT’s Think Aloud: Using Musical Tools.

3. Download the latest version of your document from the Online Classroom activity Submit Your Revised Poems.

4. Resave your document with a new name on the computer’s desktop.

5. Select and revise one or more of your poems using rhyme, repetition, alliteration and onomatopoeia.

6. Resave your work and submit to the Online Classroom activity Submit Your Revised Poems.
