The Multi-User Touch Screen Experience.

For example, ‘windows’ on the screen can provide deeper insights into parts of the venue, not just providing virtual ‘wayfinding’ around the premises, but also more fun elements, such as modifying well-known paintings (imagine drawing a moustache – just temporarily! – on the Mona Lisa), or exploring the remains of Pompeii (and build your own Roman villa at the same time).

Several viewers can compete to identify star constellations across the Galaxy, or create their own football teams who then compete against each other. Hone in on the Statue of Liberty, flip the screen to see it from another angle or a bird’s eye from the very top of her crown. Provide interactive tours of hidden treasures in the museum’s vaults, 3D interviews with celebrity sportspeople, play interactive video games themed to the venue… the potential is endless.).

Generate more visitor revenueOne of the greatest benefits of this more interactive connection with visitors is the way in which it adds another layer to the whole venue experience.

Plus, it provides an ideal opportunity to commercially engage with these audiences, for example: pay to enter competitions with a range of branded prizes; provide an interactive tour of the museum shop’s catalogue and order online, with the option of home delivery; or buy discounted tickets for the next big sports event.

Multi-touch systems can also be integrated with back-end systems, such as databases and CRM to gather information about visitor interest for future marketing campaigns.

Multi-touch displays are fast emerging as one of the most exciting ways to interact with visitors to venues, creating a richer experience while at the same time, making it possible to show so much more than previously possible and even generate more revenue.Multi-touch takes traditional touch and video technologies to a whole new level. One of the biggest challenges facing galleries, museums and other entertainment venues today is how to make the visitor experience as compelling as possible, particularly when competing with other forms of entertainment.

Today’s younger generation, in particular, have very high expectations, thanks to their everyday use of video games and other forms of entertainment. Other issues include the fact that physical space within the venue limits how much can be physically exhibited, yet expansion is rarely an option, due to tight budgets.

This is why an increasing number of the world’s art galleries, museums and other entertainment venues are turning to multi-touch technology, with its ability to show such a rich array of information, while allowing several people to engage with the screen at any one time.

What is Multi-User Multi-Touch?Ranging from 21.5 to 55 inches, multi-user, multi-touch displays have real ‘wow’ factor and make an immediate impact, often housed in beautifully designed ‘housing’ such as table-top designs.

Once users start to interact with them – simply by using their fingertips – with up to 60 simultaneous touch points they can explore a whole wealth of information. The beauty of these touch devices is that we are all so familiar with the ‘touch’ experience, through our smartphones and other devices.

Multi-touch technology takes that a step further, creating an interactive multi-user experience that can be applied to all kinds of environments. The technology itself has improved considerably, particularly with Projected Capacitive Touch, which provides a fast and consistently high quality response, ideal for creating a robust, interactive tool that will help car retailers engage with customers better to close those important showroom deals.

Connecting with visitors.

Sell venue-related productsIncrease revenue by selling visitors souvenirs of exhibitions, branded goods that support their favourite sports teams, discounted tickets for future venue events.

Explore hidden treasuresForget about the confines of four walls: with multi-touch, you can ‘virtually’ increase your museum or gallery, showing treasures in the vaults (or link to other museums or galleries).

Interactive wayfindingDig deeper: don’t just show them the easiest way to get to a part of the venue, give them an interactive guide. Let them use their fingers to swipe, flip and expand on restaurants, bird’s eye views of the stadium, or a preview of art exhibitions. Add videos and interviews.

Capture visitor dataEncourage people to register their details for future events (‘sign up to our newsletter today and receive a free key-fob in the gift shop’).

Sponsors’ showcasesLink to third party organisations who have a role to play, for instance football clubs, exhibition sponsors or tour organisers.

Educational and creativeGet visitors interacting with what’s on show, create fun competitions or video games. Who can race a chariot fastest down a Roman street? Or ‘frame’ pieces of art and then hang them on the gallery wall? Or win a Formula One race?

1. Location mattersTable-table designs are imposing and create a powerful impact, while wall-mounted systems are great space savers that liven up blank walls. Think about the furniture it is housed in, make a statement and link to branding. The creative potential is endless.

2. Touch quality is essentialAn unresponsive screen is very frustrating for users, so make sure it is fast to respond and consistent. Look for zero-lag, despite how much information is being displayed. Bezel-free design ensures that the screen is touch-sensitive right to the very edges.

3. Robust and self-serviceLook for a robust system that is ‘fit and forget’. This applies to both the hardware and the software. An intuitive and interactive interface is key: people should be able to use the system without any guidance or training.

4. Integrate it with the bigger pictureLink multi-touch systems into the rest of the sales and marketing strategies, for instance to send data back to CRM systems and databases.

5. The right support and expertiseWork with a system designer and hardware provider that has a track-record in multi-touch and so knows what pitfalls to avoid. Also, make sure that once installed, there is strong on-going support.
