The Open Innovation Revolution: Enable 10-100XImprovement in Adoption of Digital Learning

• IMS Global Learning Consortium– Non-profit alliance of institutions and suppliers collaborating to break the status quo of

closed, proprietary systems that make the use of digital technology difficult to use forteaching and learning

Institutions can become more agile by simply requiring supplier conformanceto 3 proven IMS standards:

– Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) - Establishes a standard way of integrating richlearning applications with platforms like learning management systems, portals, orother educational environments.

– Common Cartridge (CC) - Provides a way to represent digital course materials, includingassessments and discussion forums, for use in online learning systems. Content can bedeveloped in one format and then used across a wide variety of learning systems.

– Learning Information Services (LIS) - Enables interoperability between teaching andlearning applications and student information systems; allowing student data, class dataand grades to move seamlessly between systems.

• Adoption enables any application to seamlessly plug into another withoutrequiring costly and timely custom integrations

Enabling Next-Generation Digital Learning toImprove Access, Affordability and Attainment

• Can the education community collaborate to transform education?– Yes they can - and they are via the IMS Global Learning Consortium, a non-profit alliance of

institutions and suppliers collaborating to break the status quo of closed, proprietary systemsthat make the use of digital technology difficult to use for teaching and learning.

– Encouraging IMS conformance will save institutions 10-100X in the cost and time to integrateand support technology over previous integration strategies.

• Technology in Higher Education in Support of Student Success (THESIS)– Institutional strategy to enable institutions to be more agile and an innovative in the use of

digital applications, tools, and content to improve student success.– Simple framework to help improve the consistency and effectiveness of how faculty use

technology.– Facilitates information sharing about innovative and sustainable uses of technology to

improve access, affordability, and quality of personalized learning experiences.• Implementing THESIS is Fairly Simple!

– Schedule IMS webinar to provide overview of THESIS to cabinet members.– Sign-up by pledging institutional support for the underlying principals of the THESIS.– Utilize resources available in the THESIS toolkit and access to IMS community to support

adoption.– IMS serves as your authoritative resource to help your campus evolve to an open enterprise.

Current Institutional Context

• Evolving modes of instruction and resulting tech demands• Emerging business models•

Reliance on multiple platforms and service providers• IT evolving from builders to integrators, but still need to

facilitate edge innovation• Move to Enterprise Architecture and strategic sourcing

including integration standards• Track record of success but new challenges arise daily: Box,

Google, local developments, MOOCs

“We never again want to be held hostage with our content ,”admitted Finnell. “A big selling point for Blackboard was theability to say, ‘Hey, if we ever want to try another platform, weknow that our course content is backed by the IMS Global

Learning Consortium, and easily importable into other learningsystems.’”

“So many vendors have boasted “sure, we integrate

with your system” but what that really translates to is“we integrate with your system as long as your IT guysspend 6 months in a cave banging out code.”

LTI is a real return on investment for us and forsuppliers. We get the advantage of being able tointegrate a number of tremendous products into ourlearning environment and we don’t have to use our

limited resources on custom integrations since LTI is soeasy.”

-- Steve Kessinger, Director of IST, Bluefield College
