Hanging Outin Hammocks

A hammock hanging betweentwo trees is an inviting sight. This swinging bed has providedsafety and rest in the centuriessince its invention.

Anthropologists say thenative people of Central andSouth America hung the firsthammocks about 1,000 yearsago, weaving bark and leavesinto lightweight nets they calledhamacas. While some were usedfor fishing, others were strungbetween trees and used as a bed, providing a clean, dry place tosleep, plus protection fromanimals on the jungle floor.

When Christopher Columbusarrived in the Caribbean in the1400s, he was fascinated by thesleeping nets. The explorertook hamacas back to Europe, where they became knownas hammocks.

Sailors quickly adopted thesuspended beds. Easily rolled upfor storage on a crowded ship, hammocks were more hygienicand also helped preventseasickness by swaying with avessel’s movement. Through the20th century, hammocks werestandard equipment onnaval vessels.

‘Paws’ For NationalDog Day

National Dog Day is Aug. 26,and we’d like to give ashoutout—or woof-out—to ourcommunity dog! Take amoment to “paws” and give ourfurry four-legged friend a pet, scratch or belly rub!

Remembering V-J DayThe happy news came on

Aug. 14, 1945. Calling it “theday we have been waiting forsince Pearl Harbor,” U.S.President Harry S. Trumanannounced to crowds gatheredoutside the White House thatJapan had surrenderedunconditionally to the Allies.World War II was finally over.

Three months earlier, fightinghad ended in Europe withGermany’s surrender. Now reliefand jubilation erupted at wordthat the battle in the Pacific hadbeen won. In the U.S., millionsof people flooded city streets tohold impromptu parades, complete with marching bands, confetti and fireworks.

In New York City’s TimesSquare, sailors climbedlampposts and waved Americanflags, while strangers cheeredand embraced. One celebratorymoment, of a sailor excitedlykissing a woman in a whitedress, was captured byphotographer Alfred Eisenstaedtand printed a week later in Lifemagazine. The iconic image isan enduring symbol of VictoryOver Japan Day, or V-J Day.

Allied nations also broke outin festivities, which continuedthrough Aug. 15, the date theUnited Kingdom declared asV-J Day. Japan’s formalsurrender took place a fewweeks later on Sept. 2.

Circle of FriendsPhilosopher Thomas Aquinas

wrote, “There is nothing on thisearth more to be prized thantrue friendship.” In honor ofBest Friend’s Day on Aug. 15,reflect on your own experienceswith friendship.

• What does it mean to be afriend? What qualities doesa good friend possess?

• Who were some of yourbest friends when you werea child? How did youbecome friends? Whatgames did you play? What other activities didyou do together?

• Can a person have morethan one best friend?Do you?

• Name some other goodfriends you’ve had throughthe years. Did you keep alot of the same friends asyou grew up, or did youmake new friends at eachnew stage of your life?

• Who is your oldest friend?Who is your newest friend?

• Think back to the happiestor funniest momentsyou’ve shared with friends.

• What is the nicest thing afriend has ever done foryou? What’s the nicestthing you have done fora friend?

• What advice would yougive to someone who islooking to make newfriends?

SpiritualCorner

August is here. Time seems tohave tales to tell always. Stories, some filled with joy, others withhard moments. Every day tellsus a new story in our life. Everyday we choose to write thiscontinuing story on our souls. We etch it into our hearts andminds. What are we etching? What are you etching into yourvery heart?

The bible is a true story. Frombeginning to end about Godslove for us, His plan for aKingdom to come. It’s Godinspired words are perfect.Written to give us everything weneed in our life. To give hope, joy, strength, patience, faith thatGod is with us. Emanuel, Godwith us. The assurance that He,our faithful Father is over allthings in this world. Colossians1: 16-17.

There are instructionsthroughout the bible telling ushow to receive and keep thathope. How to bind it in ourhearts. The bible tells us toremember. Remembering whatwe have seen and felt God do inthe past helps us in our presentcircumstances. If we forget whatHe has done in the past wecannot fully understand thepresent and our role in it. Godknew there is a pull in ourhumanness that draws us intoforgetting.

In Joshua 4 God did a miracleto enable the Israelites and theark of covenant to cross over theJordan. The waters parted andstood up. God told Joshua tochoose one man from each tribeto go back to the middle of thewater and pick up a stone. Placethe stones along the Jordan as aremembrance. In the future Hesaid, when your descendants asktheir parents, “What do thesestones mean?” Tell them, “Israelcrossed the Jordan on dryground.” God wants all thepeople of all the world toremember how powerful Hishand is. His hand is stillpowerful and over us. He wantsus to remember.

I’m a healthy 72 year oldwoman and last month I had asevere heart attack. When I wasfirst told I felt a blanket of fearbegin to fall over me. I prayed,“Dear Father You know myfrailties. You delivered me fromfear. I will not let Satan takeback any territory. Give mepeace and joy instead of fear.”He did. Through the week ofprocedures, stepping into newwaters He parted them. I knew,Emanuel was with me. Laughterand joy filled my room. Iwitnessed to those around me,the Fathers perfect love. Iremembered who He is and whoI am to Him.

Do you remember Him andwho you are to Him whenthings seem impossible? He cancalm your waters, go before you,and part your rivers. He wantsyou to etch Him into your heartand remember.

Shedding Light onSun Protection

Sunshine is one of the bestparts of summer, but we need toprotect our skin from its harmfuleffects. Let’s shed some light onsome common misconceptions:

Myth: I’ve already had years ofsun damage, so there’s no pointin protecting myself now.

Fact: Sun protection isimportant at any age. Doctorssay even if you have a longhistory of sun exposure, youcan still reduce your risk of skincancer and prevent furtherskin damage.

Myth: If I don’t have asunburn, my skin isn’t damaged.

Fact: You don’t have to see oreven feel the sun’s burningeffects. Wearing a sunscreen thatblocks all ultraviolet rays—UVAand UVB—is the best defense, and reapply it every two hours.

Myth: I don’t need sunprotection on cloudy days.

Fact: Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and other defensesshould be worn anytime you’reoutdoors, since most of the sun’sUV rays can penetrate cloudsand fog.

Oodles of Noodle FunFoam pool noodles provide

fun and easy exercise both inand out of the water. Here aresome creative ways to use theol’ noodle on dry land!

Javelin throw. Form a circleshape with a pool noodle byduct-taping the two endstogether. Hang the ring in anopen area. Cut a second noodlein half to make a javelin, thentry to throw it through the hoop.To increase the difficulty, makethe hoop a moving target byswinging it from side to side.

Ring toss. Stick a chopstick ordowel rod into the ground, thenslide a pool noodle over it tocreate a stake. Tape a noodle’sends together to form a ring;repeat to make several rings.See how many rings you canland over the stake.

Back in the DaySome experiences that were

part of everyday life in the pastare curious concepts to today’sgeneration. See if you rememberthese things that have fadedaway with changing times.

Party lines. Between 1930 and1950, phone service for manyhomes consisted of a partyline—a telephone line sharedamong several households.Anyone on the party line couldpick up their phone receiverand end up in the middle ofsomeone else’s call, soconversations were notalways private.

S&H Green Stamps. Similar totoday’s rewards programs, manyretailers offered their customersS&H Green Stamps as bonuses, which were based on the dollaramount of their purchase.Shoppers could save up stampsand exchange them formerchandise from a catalog.S&H and other stamp programswere most popular in the 1960s.

TV stations signing off. Before the days of 24-hourbroadcasting, TV stationswould often end the day’sprogramming in the earlymorning hours by playing arecording of the nationalanthem.

Ways To DrinkMore Water

During warm weather, it’simportant to drink plenty ofwater to prevent dehydration.Increase your intake and stayrefreshed by following thesetips:

Make it part of your dailyroutine. Dietitians recommenddrinking water at several specificpoints during the day: after youwake up, with meals, before andafter exercise, and when takingmedication.

Pick a cup and fill ’er up! Aninsulated bottle, a colorfultumbler, a mug with a handle ...it doesn’t matter what kind ofdrinkware you use, as long asyou like it. Choose a containerthat is comfortable to use andsuits your style.

Sip through a straw. Manypeople find it easier to drinkthrough a straw, and you’ll getmore water with every sip. Plus, sipping slowly is better thanguzzling, which can causebloating.

Find your favorite flavor. If youdon’t like plain water or simplywant some variety, enhance theflavor with a few fresh berries, some sliced fruit, a splash ofjuice, or sprigs of fresh herbssuch as spearmint.

Adjust the temp. Whether youlike it served over ice orlukewarm, water is hydrating nomatter its temperature. Let foodservers know your preference soyou’re sure to drink water atmealtimes.

Jill: “California has a lot ofbeaches. Could you bemore Pacific?”

Two men rented a canoe andwent fishing in a remote part ofa lake. Admiring their day’s bigcatch, one of the men said,“We need to mark this spot!”The other man took out hispocketknife and began carvinga big X in the bottom of thecanoe. “What are you doing?”yelled the first man. His buddyexplained, “I’m marking ourspot, like you said!” “Thatdoesn’t make any sense! Howdo you know we’ll get the samecanoe next time?!”

A geology professor’s formerstudent returned to campus oneday with a gift for her teacher,a unique soil sample she’dcollected from a faraway river.Upon receiving the gift, theprofessor replied, “I appreciatethe sediment.”
