The Mother's Day MiceBy Eve Bunting

A Summary

1 Once upon a time in a little house under a big tree in the forest, there lived three mousebrothers, Biggest Mouse, Middle Mouse, and Little Mouse.

2 Early on Mother's Day morning, the three brothers quietly left their little house to searchfor gifts for their mother. They had to hurry—only two hours until Mother would be getting up!

3 As they walked through the forest, each mouse held tightly to his brother's tail. Theypassed a fox and an owl, but safely went on unseen until they reached a strawberry patch.Middle Mouse picked a big red strawberry as his gift for Mother.

4 Passing through the meadow, Biggest Mouse found a dandelion fluff ball which hepicked for Mother. She could use it to make a Mother's Day wish.

5 Littlest Mouse wanted to go on to Honeysuckle Cottage, a little yellow house withbeautiful honeysuckle flowers growing outside. How lovely they smelled! What a good gift,BUT…a large black cat lived there! Would he dare go to pick a honeysuckle?

6 As the three brothers watched the cat from afar, they could hear someone insideHoneysuckle Cottage playing the piano. The song was “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”.

7 Little Mouse started creeping toward the house, but his brothers pulled him back by thetail. “You might be eaten!” they warned. “You will have to forget the honeysuckle flower. Youcan find something else for a gift.”

8 On the way home, Biggest Mouse and Middle Mouse told Little Mouse to bring Mother adaisy or a rock. But Little Mouse had come up with his own secret idea.

9 Finally, they arrived back home. Mother Mouse saw her gifts. “Happy Mother's Day!”the three mice shouted. Mother blew apart the dandelion fluff ball and made a wish. She cutthe strawberry into four pieces, one for each of them. She said that the first strawberries taste ofsummer coming.

10 Little Mouse called, “Now for my gift!” He had made up a song to go to the tune of“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”, and he sang it proudly as HIS Mother's Day gift.

11 Mother was so surprised and happy. She said, “All my surprises were lovely. You eachbrought me something different and you each brought me something the same. Do you knowwhat that was?” All three brothers knew that Mother meant they had all brought her their love. And, of course, that was the best gift of all!

We have brought a song to say,Happy, happy Mother's Day.No one's mother is so nice,

Love from all your little mice.

Mother

Mother’s Day is here at last,

To find a gift we’ll hurry fast,A fluffy dandelion would be nice

For Mother — from her little mice.

A strawberry — all juicy red,

I’ll pick it from its meadow bed,The berries grow where bees are humming,

The first ones taste of summer coming.

A honeysuckle smells so sweet,

A lovely gift — a special treat,But I know something better yet,

A song that Mother won’t forget.

The gifts you brought were ‘specially fine -

As different as each mouse of mine,Yet each one gave the same, I say -

Each brought their love this Mother’s Day.
