THE CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF RALEIGH was established on December 12, 1924 by Pope Pius XI. At the time, the diocese covered the entire State of North Carolina. The Catholic population in the state was 6,000.

Bishop William J. Hafey was Raleigh’s first bishop. He served until 1937, when he was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Bishop Eugene J. McGuinness was named the second bishop of Raleigh in 1937. He served until he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Oklahoma City and Tulsa Oklahoma in 1944.

He was succeeded by Bishop Vincent S. Waters, who was named for Raleigh in 1945. During the tenure of Bishop Waters, the diocese grew to approximately 70,000 Catholics. In 1972 Pope Paul VI created the Diocese of Charlotte from the western half of the diocese. Bishop Waters served until his death in 1974.

Bishop F. Joseph Gossman became the fourth bishop of Raleigh in 1975, and served until his retirement in 2006. He was succeeded by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge in 2006.

Bishop Burbidge served until he was named for the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia in 2016.

Bishop Luis R. Zarama, an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, was appointed the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh on July 5, 2017. The date of his installation Mass was set for August 29, 2017.

Bishop Zarama arrives to a diocese that is comprised of 54 counties in eastern North Carolina and covers approximately 32,000 square miles. It is divided into eight deaneries with a total of 95 parishes and missions and five centers for campus ministry.

The Diocese of Raleigh has an estimated Catholic population of nearly 500,000.

One hundred seventy-two diocesan and religious order priests serve the diocese in active ministry or retirement. There are 73 active permanent deacons, 38 religious sisters and 27 seminarians. The Diocese of Raleigh has two Catholic high schools, five preschools/early childhood centers and 22 elementary/middle schools.

HOLY NAME OF JESUS CATHEDRAL was dedicated on July 26, 2017 and is a powerful sign proclaiming our mission as a Church, to bring God’s Word and God’s love to the people of eastern North Carolina, especially the most vulnerable and those in most need. Located prominently in our state capital, our Cathedral reminds all who pass by of the spiritual values that we pursue as Catholics in this city and state.

The Cathedral proclaims our missionary history, standing on property owned by the Diocese and originally purchased by Father Thomas Frederick Price, the first North Carolinian to be ordained a priest, whose cause for Beatification is being considered by the Church.

As the Mother Church belonging to all of the faithful, Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral provides a truly sacred place to celebrate the liturgical life of the people in our Diocese.

LUIS RAFAEL ZARAMA was born November 28, 1958 in Pasto, Colombia, the first child of Maria Teresa and Rafael Zarama. He was raised alongside his four brothers and one sister.

He attended the Conciliar Seminary in Pasto, Colombia where

he graduated from high school. He attended the Marian University in Pasto, earning a degree in Philosophy and Theology. He also attended the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, where he earned a degree in Canon Law. He was a Philosophy and Theology professor at the Carmelites School, the Learning School and the Colombia Military School for 11 years.

He was ordained to the Roman Catholic Priesthood for the Archdiocese of Atlanta on November 27, 1993. His first assignment was as parochial vicar at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Atlanta. He served as a member of the Vocations Committee. He was the first Hispanic priest to be named pastor in the Archdiocese of Atlanta to St. Mark Catholic Church in Clarksville, Georgia and St. Helena Mission in Clayton, Georgia.

He was a board member of Habitat for Humanity in Habersham County in 2005. In April 2006, he was named vicar general of the archdiocese. He was named Chaplain of His Holiness with the title of monsignor by Pope Benedict XVI on March 7, 2007. In 2008 he was appointed to serve as the judicial vicar for the Metropolitan Tribunal of the archdiocese.

On July 27, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI named him Titular Bishop of Bararus and Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. He was ordained to the Episcopacy on September 29, 2009.

On July 5, 2017 Pope Francis named Bishop Zarama the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Bishop Zarama’s motto is “God is love.” For his coat of arms, Bishop Zarama adopted a design to reflect his life and ministry as a priest.

On a blue field is displayed an extra wide chevron of Gold (yellow). This device gives the illusion of two mountains; a gold one and a blue one. The gold mountain (the chevron) is charged with a scattering (semé) of red crosses to represent the bishop’s home city of Pasto, in southwestern Colombia, which is known as “The Theological City.” The lower mountain (part of the blue field) has a golden lion’s head to represent the Evangelist, Saint Mark, who is the titular patron of the parish in Clarkesville, Georgia, on a mountain, where Bishop Zarama served as pastor.

Above the chevron are a gold rose for Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, also known as “The Little Flower,” and a silver (white) lily for Saint Joseph, the Foster Father of Jesus, who have served as Bishop Zarama’s particular patrons throughout his life as a priest and now as a bishop.

The achievement is completed with the external ornaments which are a gold episcopal processional cross, that is placed in back of and which extends above and below the shield, and the pontifical hat, called a “galero,” with its six tassels, in three rows, on either side of the shield, all in green.

A diocesan bishop shows his commitment to the flock he shepherds by combining his personal coat of arms with that of the diocese, in a technique known as impaling. The shield is divided in half along the pale, or central vertical line. The arms of the diocese appear on the dexter side - that is, on the side of the shield to the viewer’s left, which would cover the right side (in Latin, dextera) of the person carrying the shield. The arms of the bishop are on the sinister side - the bearer’s left, the viewer’s right.

Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. Herodias’ own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.” He even swore many things to her, "I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom." She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.” The girl hurried back to the king's presence and made her request, “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. EVANGELIO Mc 6, 17-29 En aquel tiempo, Herodes había mandado apresar a Juan el Bautista y lo había metido y encadenado en la cárcel. Herodes se había casado con Herodías, esposa de su hermano Filipo, y Juan le decía: “No te está permitido tener por mejer a la esposa de tu hermano”. Por eso Herodes lo mandó encarcelar. Herodías sentía por ello gran rencor contra Juan y quería quitarle la vida, pero no sabía cómo, porque Herodes miraba con respeto a Juan, pues sabía que era un hombre recto y santo, y lo tenía custodiado. Cuando lo oía hablar, quedaba desconcertado, pero le gustaba escucharlo. La ocasión llegó cuando Herodes dio un banquete a su corte, a sus oficiales y a la gente principal de Galilea, con motivo de su cumpleaños. La hija de Herodías bailó durante la fiesta y su baile les gustó mucho a Herodes y a sus invitados. El rey le dijo entonces a la joven: “Pídeme lo que quieras y yo te lo daré”. Y le juró varias veces: “Te daré lo que me pidas, aunque sea la mitad de mi reino”. Ella fue a preguntarle a su madre: “¿Qué le pido?” Su madre le contestó: “La cabeza de Juan el Bautista”. Volvió ella inmediatamente junto al rey y le dijo: “Quiero que me des ahora mismo, en una charola, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista”. El rey su puso muy triste, pero debido a su juramento y a los convidados, no quiso desairar a la joven, y enseguida mandó a un verdugo que trajera la cabeza de Juan. El verdugo fue, lo decapitó en la cárcel, trajo la cabeza en una charola, se la entregó a la joven y ella se la entregó a su madre. Al enterarse de esto, los discípulos de Juan fueron a recoger el cadáver y lo sepultaron.

He brings peace to your borders, and satisfies you with finest wheat. He sends his command to earth; his word runs swiftly! Thus he makes the snow like wool, and spreads the frost like ash; he disperses hail like crumbs. Who can withstand his cold? Yet when again he issues his command, it melts them; he raises his winds and the waters flow. He proclaims his word to Jacob, his statutes and laws to Israel. He has not done this for any other nation; of such laws they know nothing. Hallelujah!.

¡Celebra al SEÑOR, oh Jerusalén! ¡Alaba a tu Dios, oh Sion! Porque ha fortalecido el cerrojo de tus puertas, y ha bendecido a tus hijos dentro de ti. may integrity of faith, holiness of life, fraternal charity and pure religion flourish and abide until the end, and, as you do not fail to feed her with the Body of your Son and with your word, so also never cease, we pray, to guide her under your protection. Through Christ our Lord.
