6 Vanessa Nicole Jewels :: Diamond Education

Head - A ring is composed of two main parts: Head & Shank. The head is the primary object that holds in the main center stone. It is made up of 4 or 6 prongs and/or a halo, which connects to the shank.

Shank - The shank, or band, is the part of the ring that wraps around your finger on the bottom. This is the area that jewelers cut when sizing a ring. It’s also the area on a ring that gets stamped or engraved.

Center Stone - This is the main focal point of your ring and it’s the stone that the rest of the ring design is based around.

Halo - A halo is composed of smaller stones surrounding the center stone. This gives the center stone a larger appearance, and it also adds a layer of protection around the center stone. You can have a single or double halo.

Side Stones - The side stones (also know as “accent stones”) are additional stones located on the sides of the ring.

Prongs - The center stone prongs are part of the head that wrap around the outside of the center stone so it won’t fall out. They can be shaped in many ways, and can also be either single or double prongs on each corner.

The 4Cs of Diamonds

——CLARITY——Clarity is based on how flawless a diamond is internally. It is very rare for a diamond to be accurately graded as Flawless. Internal characteristics of a diamond are called “inclusions,” and surface characteristics are called “blemishes.”

——CARAT——The bigger a diamond is, the more rare it is, which increases the price. Diamonds are sold by the carat (shown as “ct”). Most diamonds in the world weigh less than one carat, which is why larger diamonds cost so much more per carat. A carat is equal to exactly 0.2 grams (about the weight of a paper clip).

——COLOR——Color refers to a diamond’s lack of color, grading the whiteness. A color grade of D is the highest possible, while Z is the lowest. To the naked eye, most diamonds with a GIA color grade of I or above appear nearly colorless.

——CUT——Cut is a diamond’s most important characteristic since it determines what we generally think of as “sparkle”. Cut refers to a diamond’s proportions, symmetry and polish. Excellent cut: roughly the top 3% of diamonds. Very good cut: roughly the top 15% of diamonds. Good cut: roughly the top 25% of diamonds.
