STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION This has been a month of celebrations for us as Catholics. Today we celebrate the Solemnity (Feast) of Corpus Christi during which we commemorate the great gift of the Eucharist which stands at the heart and life of the mission of the Church. This is not only a time to celebrate this gift to us from Christ, but to consider its meaning and richness both in the life of the Church and in our lives as Catholics.

The celebration of Corpus Christi commemorates the presence of the Body and Blood of Christ, one of the Sacraments of the Eucharist. On Holy Thursday Jesus met the Apostles for the Last Supper, when He said, “This is my Body (indicating the bread) and this is my Blood (designating the wine).” We as Catholics acknowledge the gift of the Eucharist, as this is the food of our souls.

Twelve times during the Last Supper Jesus reminds us that He is the Bread of Life. He is quite definite about this reality. It is He Who gives us eternal life. Every Catholic Mass, not just this one, is both a memorial to Christ’s life, death, and Resurrection, and also a participation in the sacrifice which Christ made on the Cross for us. When we approach to receive communion, we are in reality at the foot of the Cross, adoring, asking forgiveness, and offering ourselves to Christ Who loved us to His death.

Today, and every day when we approach the Eucharist, we need to keep this in mind. We need to receive this incredible gift and then as good stewards we need to share it by being disciples, by sharing the Good News in our lives and how we live them.

Every Child Needs a Voice Nearly 5,000 children pass through the San Diego County foster care system each year. These children have been removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment, and neglect, and often struggle as they move between homes and schools without consistent adults in their lives.

For children in foster care, a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) can be the essential difference in the trajectory of their lives. CASAs work one-on-one with a child or group of siblings, getting to know them and what is needed for their best interests to be met. With the support of a CASA, a child in foster care is more likely to succeed in school, receive vital services, and find a safe, permanent home.

Voices for Children, a nonprofit organization primarily funded by private sources, is the only agency designated by the San Diego Superior Court to recruit, train, and supervise CASA volunteers for our community. CASAs are empowered by the Juvenile Court to become experts about their case children. More than mentors, CASAs have broad access to legal, medical, educational, and other records and professionals. CASAs make recommendations to the Court to ensure that the judge is informed about their case children’s unique challenges and what they need to be happy and succeed.

No prior experience is necessary to volunteer as a CASA—Voices for Children provides all the needed training, plus a dedicated staff supervisor to offer resources and support throughout a volunteer’s service. With just 10-15 hours a month, a CASA can create a brighter future for a child in foster care. Visit www.speakupnow.org or call (858) 598-2230 to learn more and sign up for a volunteer information session.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the heart of today’s solemnity is a eucharistic procession, held in many parishes, that calls to mind the procession of Holy Thursday, yet has a purpose different from the somber adoration in the night watch. In the late Middle Ages, a procession through the city with the Blessed Sacrament was an occasion of heartfelt joy and great emotion. In a time when people seldom approached the altar to receive Holy Communion, the procession through the streets, past homes and workplaces, was a vibrant reminder that Christ was with them as a dear companion and guide.

Every year on this day, a joyful procession winds through the streets of Rome from the Lateran cathedral. A few years ago, Pope John Paul II, deeply moved at the sight of the throng accompanying the sacred host, said that we ought to feel profoundly united with the faithful everywhere in the world at such a moment. “Before our mind’s eye all the Churches of the world, from East to West, from North to South, are present.” Originally this feast was on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, but after the calendar reform of 1970, its title was expanded from “Corpus Christi” to “The Body and Blood of Christ” and in the United States it was moved to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Even though Easter season ended two weeks ago, this beautiful feast is aglow with Easter light.
