The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ The bishops' stewardship pastoral asks, "And what do Christians bring to the eucharistic celebration and join there with Jesus' offering?" The answer: "Their lives as Christian disciples, their personal vocations and the stewardship

they have exercised regarding them, their individual contributions to the great work of restoring all things in Christ."

El Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo La pastoral de corresponsabilidad de los obispos pregunta: "¿Y qué aportan los cristianos a la celebración eucarística y se unen allí con la ofrenda de Jesús?" La respuesta: "Sus vidas como discípulos cristianos, sus vocaciones personales y la mayordomía que han ejercido con respecto a ellos, sus contribuciones individuales a la gran obra de restaurar todas las cosas en Cristo".

SACRIFICE Today the Church focuses on the Eucharist. Today’s readings remind us how connected to ancient blood sac-rifices we are when offering our unbloody sacrifice. The reading from Exodus describes a solemn ritual designed so the Israelites would never forget their covenant with God. The reading from the Letter to the Hebrews turns us from those ancient animal sacrifices, the first efforts to worship the living God. Our sacrifice is the body and blood of the Son of God. Because of Christ we have a new covenant. The Gospel from Mark retells the establishment of that covenant, the familiar story of the Last Supper. Jux-taposed with the story of animal sacrifice as it is here, we are challenged to listen with new attention, to remember the great price paid for our salvation. Jesus gave his body and every drop of his blood for us.

SACRIFICIO Hoy la Iglesia se centra en la Eucaristía. Las lectu-ras de hoy nos recuerdan la gran conexión que existe entre los sacrificios de sangre de la antigüedad y el sa-crificio incruento que ofrecemos ahora. La lectura del Éxodo describe un rito solemne para que los israelitas nunca olviden su pacto con Dios. La lectura de la Carta a los Hebreos nos lleva de los antiguos sacrificios de animales a los primeros esfuerzos para adorar al Dios vivo. Nuestro sacrificio es el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Hijo de Dios. A causa de Cristo tenemos una nueva alianza. El Evangelio según San Marcos relata la creación de ese pacto, la conocida historia de la Última Cena. Si contrastamos la historia del sacrificio de animales que vemos aquí, se nos desafía a escuchar con nueva aten-ción, para recordar el gran precio que pagó por nuestra salvación. Jesús dio su cuerpo y cada gota de su sangre por nosotros.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA Fe Los cristianos creemos que Jesucristo esta físicamente presente en el pan y el vino consagrado durante la misa. Esta creencia es tan antigua como nuestra Iglesia, pero fue solo en el siglo XIII que los cristianos comenzaron a venerar la presencia sacramentada de Jesús en la hostia. Fue durante esta época que nació la fiesta de Corpus Cristi o la actual Celebración del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Muchas comunidades cristianas celebran esta fiesta con procesiones y cantos en honor al santísimo sacramento del altar. Recuerdo que en Texas el pueblo Méxicoamericano cantaba: “Bendito, bendito, bendito sea Dios, / los ángeles cantan y alaban a Dios (2x). Yo creo Dios mío que estas en el altar / oculto en la hostia ten vengo adorar (2x)”. Este canto enfatiza la verdadera presencia de Jesús en el pan consagrado, pero sus cantores ignoran el hecho que nosotros también fuimos consagrados en el bautismo; consagrados para “alter Cristus” (otro Cristo) en el vecindario. En un mundo donde menos gente asiste a Misa el único Corpus Cristi que la mayoría de la gente secularizada verá es tu cuerpo. Ojalá podamos comportarnos como buenos testigos de la fe y que proclamemos "bendito, bendito" siempre y en todo lugar.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION A new name for this feast, long known as Corpus Christi or “Body of Christ,” points to an important recovery of Com-munion from the shared chalice, the Precious Blood, in the Roman Catholic liturgy. For many centuries, only the priest received from the chalice. Now, over the last forty years, the cup has been offered more frequently to the faithful. Sadly, perhaps because it is not offered at all Masses, or because people are free to pass by the offered cup, it can be seen by some as a “take it or leave it” option. Some important meanings surface, however, when we drink from the common cup, such as our desire to partic-ipate in the pouring out of Christ’s love. Bread is the staff of life, eaten by necessity even in times of pain. Wine, on the other hand, is the mark of festivity, a pledge of joy, a sign of unity between our altar table and the banquet feast of heav-en. The center of the Gospel today is Jesus speaking of the pouring out of his blood, and his offer of a cup of blessing to be shared as a sign of his love. There is no better response than to take and drink, and no better way to mark this feast.

mos Señor o con otra respuesta semejante. Estas plegarias tienen un orden propio. Pedimos primero por las necesidades de la Iglesia, como institu-

ción; por los jefes de Estado y quienes gobiernan el mundo en todos sus niveles; por las personas que sufren cualquier tipo de opresión, sea econó-

mica, física, mental, de salud, de libertad de conciencia, de falta de expresión, de marginación, etcétera. El cuarto momento de esta oración está

directamente enfocado a las necesidades de la comunidad local y, este es precisamente el momento de recordar nuestros difuntos. Este es el mo-

mento de presentar nuestras necesidades particulares, sea en voz alta o en voz baja, según lo indique quien preside la litúrgica, sea eucarística o

sacramental. Estas plegarias pueden también cantarse de tal forma que favorezcan la participación del pueblo.

FEAST OF FAITH

The Corpus Christi Procession

In the thirteenth century, a Belgian nun by the name of Juliana had a vision: she saw the full moon silvery and radiant except for one dark spot.

The meaning of the vision was revealed to her: the moon was the Church’s liturgical year, the dark spot a missing feast in honor of the Blessed Sac-

rament. Today’s feast of Corpus Christi—the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ—grew from Juliana’s vision.

On this feast, many parishes observe the traditional Corpus Christi procession, giving honor to the Eucharist by carrying this greatest treasure

out of the safety of our churches and into our streets. At the end of every Mass we are not just let out, we are sent forth, strengthened by the Eucha-

rist, to be the Body of Christ in the world. The Corpus Christi procession is the dismissal writ large! We take Jesus with us, not only in our hearts, but

carried in our midst and exposed in a monstrance. It is a public profession of faith and a blessing of the world. Jesus walks with us on these streets

that we walk day after day, among those who know him but yearn to know him better, and among those who do not know him. The Eucharist is a

mystery to be believed, to be celebrated—and to be lived.
