The image of the mosaic is special to “the people called Methodists,” especially since the installation of a dramatic rendering of Jesus made from 500,000 pieces of mosaic tile 50 years ago. That “Mosaic Jesus” as he’s often called around Hot Springs has become a landmark, or sorts! Often, over the loudspeaker, I hear the driver point out the dramatic Mexican/Italian work of art to tourists riding The Duck Boats, and I smile to myself. But as I smile, I love the image of what it means to make something beautiful from thousands of pieces of broken tile with different colors, shapes, and angles. Combine the above ingredients. When I use 12 eggs, I don’t increase the onions but maybe a teaspoon or so more. I do the same with the mustard say 5 or 6 teaspoons. I use dried onion flakes reconstituted with water and drain well.

Stephen MinistersHelp, Hope, Healing. That’s the theme Stephen Ministers from First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs are promoting this Spring. The congregation will learn about the activities of Stephen Ministers. They will learn how our Stephen Ministers provide one-to-one Christian care to people in our congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.

Stephen Ministry is a confidential ministry. The identity of those receiving care and everything they discuss with a Stephen Minister remain private. A Stephen Minister is a caring Christian friend who listens, cares, prays, supports, and encourages. Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of training in providing high-quality, distinctively Christian care.

A class to train members of FUMC Hot Springs who desire to become a Stephen Minister will begin in September. Contact any pastor or Stephen Minister if you would like to learn more about becoming a Stephen Minister. Also, advise any of our pastors or Stephen Ministers if you or someone you know could use the support of a Stephen Minister.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

Since 2006 our church has supported Manos Juntas Mexico, a UM Volunteers in Mission project in the Rio Grand valley of Mexico, sending medical and construction teams to provide housing and medical care for the poor. It seems hard to believe, but June 7-14 will mark our fourteenth trip. This is due to a core group of dedicated missioners who pay all their own expenses, many returning year after year, to experience the blessing of service in the name of our Lord.

Even though we cover our expenses, we still need money to purchase construction materials and medicines. Everyone can be a participant in this project by means of your prayers and donations. Thanks to all for your on going support in this work-the result over the years being improved housing and health for thousands of people. Que Dios les bendigan(God bless all of you).

Looking for a 2 week Sunday School lesson for your class? Extraordinary Catch, a two week lesson on evangelism by everyone and for everyone, is being offered by The Invitational Evangelism Committee. Reminder: Second Wednesday prayer time for our church is May 13 in the Chapel at 4:30pm. Also please help our visitors and new members by remembering to wear name tags on Sunday mornings!

Outreach Committee NewsThanks to the congregation for the awesome response of over $20,000 for the Easter offering. The ministries that receive the offering will be greatly blessed by your generosity. Also, we provided 100 health kits to Samaritan Ministries to distribute at their annual Easter dinner at the mission. Another 200 kits are planned for this year to help Jackson House, Open Door at Jones Mill, the Oaklawn Chaplaincy, and CCMC. All these kits are made possible by your generous giving to the Ingathering offering last fall. We are so grateful for the continued support for Outreach by our church.

DR. LOUIS POOLE

Holy Week services were incredible—the preaching presented by our three pastors, the praying, and the music were all superb! Bart Patton’s and Mike Lovelady’s leadership was made manifest in the great way the youth led in a most meaningful Maundy Thursday service. Our Good Friday Tenebrae service both affirmed our gratefulness for Christ’s suffering and reminded us of his sacrifice through the scriptures, hymns, anthems, and commentaries on the seven last “words” that were brought forth in the service. And the services on Easter Sunday wonderfully proclaimed Christ’s resurrection.

Four events combine to ignite worship in any service: proper liturgical planning, great preaching, exciting music which both supports the spoken word and is a ‘vehicle’ for carrying worship to God, and a strong indwelling of the Holy Spirit within all parts of the service. Worship is a verb, with emphasis on the ‘doing,’ and it always needs heartfelt dedication by those who lead. Great leadership was so apparent in our Holy Week services—both the pastoral and the musical. Many thanks to our Chancel Choir, two handbell choirs, brass and timpani players, and organist Lynne Crow for providing superb musical leadership in the three Easter morning services. Thanks again to our Chancel Choir and Lynne, and to string players Joanne Doughty and Rebecca McCormick for leadership in the Good Friday service. Thanks to all who read scripture, prayed, or gave commentaries in this service, as well. And thank you, Holy Spirit, for being with us in all Holy Week services, and in every service and ministry that we are blessed with at First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs!

National Day of Prayer is scheduled for Thursday, May 7 2015. There are currently 3 events to be held in Hot Springs: 1. 11AM-1PM at the First Church of the Nazarene; 2. 4-5:30 at First UMC; and 3. 7PM-9PM at Trinity Church. The theme for this year is Lord Hear Our Cry – taken from 1Kings 8:28 which says “Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day.” Our prayer team encourages you to participate in one or all of these events. We especially hope that you will come to our beautiful Prayer Room behind the sanctuary on that Thursday afternoon and join us in a time of quiet worship where you may personally “cry out” to God for yourself, our church, and our nation. This is the one time of the year when the front doors of the church are open to the city.

Psalm 11:3 asks “When foundations are being destroyed what can the righteous do?” We may think that it is too late for our country-that we have reached a point of no return. There is definitely cause for despair, but we are reminded in scripture that nothing is impossible with God. This annual observance powerfully demonstrates the religious freedoms that were secured by our founding fathers. Come join us in believing that God can bring about another great lay person revival like the one that started in New York City in 1857. Just think of where our nation would be if Christians had not been praying all these years for our county. Join us as we pray that our nation would return to God. (Thoughts taken from Franklin Graham, Shirley Dobson, and Story Omaitian from the website nationaldayofprayer.org)

Volunteer opportunities include rocking babies, reading stories with children, and involving children in creative art experiences. A background check is required for all volunteers who have contact with children in the CDC. Arkansas Children’s Week CelebrationCDC children and staff celebrated Arkansas Children’s Week, which was April 12-18, by Zoning in on Construction, which was the theme for the week. On Thursday of that week, the gym was designated as a construction zone and children spent the day using different types of blocks and props to create unbelievable structures. As children built with the blocks, they were using math skills, engaging in problem solving, learning to negotiate, cooperate and collaborate, and developing work habits like planning, persistence, and concentration. While construction zones are a part of the environment of each preschool classroom in the CDC, the gym gave the children an opportunity to enjoy a much larger construction zone.
