The Anatomy of A First Aid KitA well-stocked first aid kit is a handy thing to have. To be prepared for emergencies:

• Keep a first aid kit in your home and in your car.

• Carry a first aid kit with you or know where you can find one.

• Find out the location of first aid kits where you work.

First aid kits come in many shapes and sizes. You can purchase one from your local American Red Cross chapter. Your local drug store may sell them. You can also make your own. Some kits are designed for specific activities, such as hiking, camping or boating.

Whether you buy a first aid kit or put one together, make sure it has all the items you may need:

Include any personal items such as medications and emergency phone numbers or other items your health-care provider may suggest.

• Check the kit regularly.

• Make sure the flashlight batteries work.

• Check expiration dates and replace any used or out-of-date contents.

The Red Cross recommends that all first aid kits for a family of four include the following:

• 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)

• 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)

• 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch)

• 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram)

• 5 antiseptic wipe packets• 2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each)• 1 blanket (space blanket) • 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve)• 1 instant cold compress• 2 pair of non-latex gloves (size: large)• 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets

(approximately 1 gram each)• Scissors• 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide)• 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide)• 5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches)• 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches)• Oral thermometer (non-mercury/nonglass)• 2 triangular bandages• Tweezers• First aid instruction booklet

Currently, nearly 124,000 men, women and children are awaiting organ transplants in the

United States.

Approximately 77,633 Multicultural Patients*

Approximately 2,146 Pediatric Patients*

29,532 Organ Transplants Performed in 2014

14,414 Organ Donors in 2014

More than 47,000 corneas were transplanted in 2013

More than 1 million tissue transplants are done each year and the surgical need for

tissue has been steadily rising.

National Donate Life Month (NDLM) was instituted by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations in 2003. Celebrated in April each year, NDLM features an entire month of local, regional and national activities to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.

For the 2016 National Donate Life Month artwork, Donate Life America was inspired by the mighty sunflower. It’s difficult to overlook their stature and bright color. A sunflower’s orangey yellow hue evokes feelings of optimism, warmth and cheerfulness. Often found in fields, they stand confident, sheltering each other and following the light throughout their lives.

Look a little closer and you will notice that one sunflower’s face contains as many as 2,000 seeds. With these, it has the potential to create an entirely new field of flowers. We each have a similar potential to give life when we register our decision to become an organ, eye and tissue donor. One organ donor can save and heal the lives of up to eight people through organ donation and countless others through tissue donation. A chance at new life gives beyond the recipient. Just as a new field of sunflowers brings comfort and happiness to those that come into contact with it, so does a loved one’s gift of donation to his or her family and friends.

Through life and its struggles, the sunflower reminds us to lean on each other and embrace the life-giving aspects of our lives. It reminds us to live with joy, to focus on the light even during difficult times, and to give freely to save the lives of others when we are gone.

U.S. Reps. Tour Independent Pharmacies

by Michael Rule, Associate Director Public Affairs and Grassroots Advocacy

The 2016 Congressional calendar is designed to give members of Congress an opportunity to spend additional time in their respective districts to meet with constituents during this election year. As such, many members of Congress continue to visit small business independent community pharmacies to learn more about operations, the role they play in the health care system and issues affecting the industry.

For example, Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform (OGR) Committee, took time to meet with Dean Jolley and Darryl Wagner of Jolley’s Compounding Pharmacy. This visit provided an opportunity for participants to discuss key legislation important to independent community pharmacy including: H.R. 244, the MAC Transparency Act, H.R. 592, the Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act, and H.R. 793, the Ensuring Seniors Access to Local Pharmacies Act. It also occurred shortly before an OGR committee hearing to investigate rising generic drug costs.

Additionally, one of patients’ and independent community pharmacy’s biggest supporters, Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.), took time to visit Madden’s Pharmacy in Elberton, Ga. Congressman Collins is a lead sponsor of H.R. 244, and co-sponsor of H.R. 592 and H.R. 793. He aggressively questioned representatives of Express Scripts and CVS Caremark during a November 2015 hearing of the House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law. He has also spoken before the full House of Representatives of the need for legislation to level the playing field between independent pharmacies and huge pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) corporations. While Congressman Collins is well versed in the issues facing independent community pharmacy, this visit allowed those attending to discuss another issue of importance, DIR fees.

There was also a visit in Tennessee where Roller Pharmacy in Erwin hosted Representative Phil Roe (R-Tenn.). Rep. Roe is a co-sponsor of H.R. 592 and H.R. 793. This visit was an opportunity to thank Congressman Roe for his support of these important bills and to ask him to support H.R. 244.

Finally, in Florida, Congressman Patrick Murphy, who is currently a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, visited Palm Beach Compounding Center in Palm Beach. During the visit, pharmacist in charge Rick Upson discussed the key legislative issues. Congressman Murphy is a co-sponsor of H.R. 592. He also had the opportunity to show Congressman Murphy the videos of “Phil My Pockets,” a humorous take on how PBM middlemen interfere with the patient/pharmacist relationship.

NCPA appreciates all members of Congress who have taken the time to visit an independent pharmacy in their district and learn more about the key role these pharmacies play as pillars of the community in regards to civic involvement and providing employment opportunities, as well as their overall role in the health care system. With more recesses built in this year’s Congressional calendar, we hope more members will use the opportunity to visit an independent pharmacy in their community.

Interested in hosting a visit, or maybe scheduling a meeting in your district with a member of Congress? You can find tips and a sample

invite letter that can be personalized here, or contact [email protected] for assistance from NCPA.

The doctor told him that he needed a cane. So he bought one. He hid it behind the sofa. When the cane was finally discovered he was asked why he wasn’t using it. His

answer: “It’s for old people and besides it’s too short.” He was three months from becoming 93. “When you bought the cane, didn’t anyone at the drug store help you?”

“No.” he replied. “You should have asked. Why didn’t you?” This made him angry. “Because I wasn’t buying my first bike you know!”

It was obvious: Buying his cane was not a pleasant experience. After a few adjustments and some tender persuading he finally used the cane.

Source: http://www.ncpanet.org/How-to-Sell-Canes.pdf

Do you sell canes? If so, consider the following ideas:

• Make sure they are easily accessible.

• If they are merchandised on a wall then make sure they are at an appropriate height and the cane be taken down easily.

• If they are in a free standing rack then be certain that canes are not tangled with each other and the canes can be slid effortlessly out of the display.

• Cross merchandise a floor display near your waiting area.

• Have canes adjusted in a variety of positions. Create a sign that reads: We are happy to help adjust the cane so that it fits you just right.

• Offer your customers an assortment of styles and colors to choose from. Canes are available in ball, crook, derby, ornamental, palm grip, soft grip, offset,

left handed, right handed and T handles. There seems to be no end in colors and fashion canes are becoming very popular. Leather wrapped canes seem to be a big hit. Some canes even light up, known as The Pathfinder. Don’t forget the

folding travel cane.

• Have plenty of the accessories: cane tips, tripod tip, glow tip, cane ice tip attachment, stand (cane stay), strap, and clip on light.

• Most important! Offer compassion and understanding. You never know when someone is counting on you to take care of their dad.

Each April since 1987, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) has sponsored Alcohol Awareness Month to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma and encourage local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues.

10

With this year’s theme, “Talk Early, Talk Often: Parents Can Make a Difference in Teen Alcohol Use,” the month of April will be filled with local, state, and national events aimed at educating people about the treatment and prevention of alcoholism, particularly among our youth, and the important role that parents can play in giving kids a better understanding of the impact that alcohol can have on their lives. Local NCADD Affiliates as well as schools, colleges, churches, and countless other community organizations will sponsor a host of activities that create awareness and encourage individuals and families to get help for alcohol-related problems.

Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous—both to themselves and to society, and is directly associated with traffic fatalities, violence, suicide, educational failure, alcohol overdose, unsafe sex and other problem behaviors, even for those who may never develop a dependence or addiction. Adolescence is a time of heightened risk-taking and as alcohol and drugs enter the

picture, parents are faced with a unique set of challenges. They can simply sit back and hope their kids will “get through it,” or they can take an active role in learning about alcohol and drugs and helping their kids do the same.

It can be daunting to talk with children about drinking and drug use, but it is well worth the effort parents put into it. In fact, research has shown that kids who have conversations with their parents and learn a lot about the dangers of alcohol and drug use are 50% less likely to use these substances than those who don’t have such conversations.

“Alcohol and drug use is a very risky business for young people,” says Andrew Pucher, President and Chief Executive Officer of NCADD, “and parents can make a difference. The longer children delay drinking and drug use, the less likely they are to develop any problems associated with it. That’s why it is so important to help your child make smart decisions about alcohol and drugs.”

Basketball, football, racquetball, golf, and baseball.....what do these sports have in common? Answer: They are all considered sports with a high risk of eye injury. You can add to the list boxing, softball, lacrosse, hockey, tennis, soccer, paintball, fencing, badminton, and fishing. Every year 100,000 Americans suffer eye injuries during sports and recreation; 42,000 requiring emergency room treatment. The good news is 90% of these injuries could be prevented with the use of the protective eyewear.

April is National Sports Eye Safety Month. Because most sports-related eye injuries are preventable, the potential economic savings resulting from the prevention of these injuries is great, not to mention the well-being of the injured athlete. Even though most eye injuries are preventable, most sports organizations do not require participants to wear the appropriate eye safety gear. Players are required to wear pads, shoes, leggings, helmets, and even mouth guards; but, rarely, do we see players with appropriate eyewear. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the participant, parent, or coach to require players to wear the correct safety wear.

When we think of eye safety and sports, most of us immediately think of children in sports. However, more and more adults are participating in athletic and leisure activities that may pose a potential threat to the safety of the eyes if protective eyewear is not worn. One common mistake is believing one’s regular eye glasses can serve as protective wear. Not only is this incorrect, but regular eye glasses (or what eye doctors call “street wear”) can actually increase the risk of serious damage to the

eyes. Regular glasses and contacts can actually puncture the eye and surrounding tissue if an accident occurs.

In fact, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is trying to pass requirements that restrict participants from wearing “streetwear” in high risk sports. Sports enthusiasts should also realize regular sun glasses fall into the category of “streetwear.” While sun glasses protect the eyes from harmful UV rays, they may cause serious injury if a broken piece pierces the eye or surrounding flesh.Ninety percent of sports related eye injuries can be prevented with the use of protective eyewear including safety glasses, goggles, safety shields and eye guards designed for specific sports. Eyewear with polycarbonate lenses should be worn for high risk sports, and helmets with a polycarbonate face mask or shield should be worn if helmets are required. Eye protection should be approved by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). Remember, most sports organizations to not require players to wear protective eyewear, so it is up to the participant, coach, or parent to make sure appropriate eyewear is used.

In addition to safety eyewear, use the following guidelines whenever you are in

the vicinity of sports activities:

*Protect eyes from flying debris or other objects.

*Remember regular eye glasses are not sufficient protection.

Advertising

Market your pharmacy to new customers by identifying target audiences for this marketing effort. Consider placing advertising in nursing homes, doctors’ offices, human resources departments for large companies and neighboring businesses and health-related organizations. Advertising can alert new customers to the pharmacy’s special offerings. For example, “Proven and Powerful Marketing for Your Independent Community Pharmacy,” recommends incorporating a private “consultation room” for discussing sensitive pharmaceutical concerns with patients and then advertising this offering via newspaper, radio or other advertising platform.

Sales And Promotions

Attract new customers to the pharmacy with an offer of something special, including free health information, a free useful item, such as a paper fan during the summertime or reusable shopping bag, or discounts on health-related pharmacy items such as over-the-counter pain relievers, sunscreen or vitamins. Another marketing idea to bring in new customers is to offer health care promotions where people can receive free health care screenings for blood pressure and cholesterol. Gift cards for services, such as flu shots, can also be used to attract new customers, according to Samantha Timmerman at the Pharmacy Development Blog.

Pharmacies must work to attract new customers given the prevalence of pharmacies on the market. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 269,900 pharmacists worked in pharmacies in 2008, including traditional pharmacies, pharmacies in hospitals as well as

mail order and online pharmacies and pharmaceutical wholesalers. The Bureau reports that interactions between customers and pharmacies will continue to grow as prescription drugs grow more complex and increasing numbers of individuals begin taking multiple prescription drugs, providing the perfect opportunity for attracting new customers.

Marketing Ideas to Bring in New Customers for a Pharmacyby Morgan Rush, Demand Media

Merchandising And Display

Merchandising and displays can effective market to new customers, particularly in situations when the pharmacy is located within another retail store, such as a drugstore or grocery store. Merchandising displays can attract new customers to the pharmacy to browse rather than just walking by. Display products related to the theme being promoted, and include “shelf talkers” that activate to present health information when customers walk by.

Public Relations And Publicity

Outstanding customer service is another effective marketing technique. When new customers approach the counter, avoid saying, “I’ll be with you in a minute.” Instead, offer a welcoming greeting and ask the customer’s name for future reference. Be prepared to discuss health information with knowledgeable facts about pharmacy products. Create promotional activity calendars for pharmacy events that may attract new customers. Ideas include an “allergy season” presentation in the spring and information about diabetes before the winter holiday season, when patients may want information about enjoying the season’s delicacies without putting their health at risk. Alert the media to these events for free publicity and possible coverage.
