Three Great Ways to Help Rock Fall Fest 2013

Are you looking for a way to support Fall Fest? Look no further than the patio after services. Through mid-August, the Fall Fest Committee will be welcoming your gifts and contributions in a couple of special ways:

Sponsorship Opportunities Let's pump up the fun for all ages with Bubble Rollers, Bungee Jump, Bounce House, Obstacle Course and Dunk Tank (get ready Pastor Robb!) ...great games, live band, Halloween Costume Parade and much more! Your generous tax-deductible contribution will make all this possible. Check out the Fall Fest Sponsorship Opportunities display for the contribution level that works best for you!

Silent Auction Donations Our Silent Auction, the centerpiece of last year's Fall Fest, was a highly-successful fundraiser. The 130+ wonderful donations of gifts and services, were essential for raising funds that are supporting the good work and missions that Aldersgate is able to implement this year.

Let's continue this legacy of giving for a great cause. Think about what you can offer to the Fall Fest 2013 Silent Auction effort. It only takes a couple of minutes to sign up.

Donation Forms are available on the patio (and in this newsletter). Also, if you have a connection with a local business that could benefit our Silent Auction, please contact Ron Alderson [email protected] or Lori Daybell [email protected].

UMCOR School Kit Project at Fall Fest Fall Fest guests will have an opportunity to assemble an UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) school kit. These kits will be used in places where people do not have ready access to many essential supplies for everyday life. In some countries, children don't have books or school supplies. Many have no schoolrooms; classes are held in inadequate or half-destroyed buildings, tents, or even the open air. School kits may be these children's only educational resources. We are asking for sponsorships to help underwrite this great mission project.

Thank you for your continued prayers! We're excited to be working together to create another great event for our church family and our neighboring community.

Please remember that ALL GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS using the Aldersgate facility must contact the church office and schedule their meetings, rehearsals and events on the Master Calendar. Using the Master

Calendar avoids confusion and conflicts and also insures that your meeting or event is set up properly with the necessary equipment.

Our facility is in constant use both internally and by outside groups. What you see on the Sunday bulletin calendar is only a small portion of the events and activities that are occurring during the week.

In addition, it is VITAL to remember to close and lock all doors and windows when you adjourn. Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in keeping our property secure!

First, I want to let you know that Pastor Robb and I have decided to alternate writing the articles for the monthly Gatepost. So, this is my month! Second, I want to talk a little bit about the upcoming prayer class entitled, “Way of Prayer.” As we begin to envision what our church might be doing in the next year and beyond, Pastor Robb and I felt it was important for the Church to spend some time in prayer intentionally listening to God. The class will be based on the book, The Way of Prayer, which leads small groups into the heart of prayer. In this 10 week study,

participants will explore the nature of prayer and a number of prayer forms. Topics include: How Do You Pray? Images of God Praying by Heart Praying with Music Praying by Gaze Praying with our Bodies Scriptural Prayer Contemplative Prayer Praying with and for Others Prayer and Social Transformation

In an effort to help everyone attend a Prayer class, we are having four different

weekly meetings. These are: Sundays from 10:15-11:30 AM Library led by Helen Waterson Sundays from 5:30-7 PM Fireside Room led by Rev. Karin Ellis Tuesdays from 10-11:30 AM Fireside Room led by Rev. Robb Fuesler Wednesdays from 7-8:30 PM Fireside Room led by Bill Marquis Every class begins the week of Oct. 6 and child care will be provided at each class. We hope you will be able to attend one class in order to deepen your own prayer practices and hopefully listen for God’s voice in your life. Let us be in prayer together! Blessings, Pastor Karin

Our last Adventurers Meeting was spent watching the movie “Faith Like Potatoes” together in the Library. We had mixed reviews. I feel a lot of it had to do with the accent of the actors, the small screen of the television and the sound quality of the television’s speakers. It would have had much better reviews had the screen been larger (since the scenery was just beautiful) and the message could have been received with a clearer sound system. Well, we all have our opinions but the message of the movie could not be disputed: “God will do amazing things with us if we are open to the grace given to us through Jesus!” Because we are currently short-staffed in the office, our October meeting, which would have been on Thursday, October 24, has been postponed it until November. What will we be doing in November?...Check this out:

ADVENTURERS (55+) and OTHERS (younger than 55) BOWERS MUSEUM SENIOR OUTREACH PROGRAMS PRESENTS:

California Rancho Friday, November 8, 1:30pm in the Fellowship Hall

A one hour presentation that will take us to southern California back in the early 1800’s as we discover what life was like on a rancho. Clipper ships, making candles, branding cattle, racing horses, cooking, clothing and a fiesta! Come, bring your friends, and be present to enjoy this free, informative and fun journey back in time. There is no charge to attend although we will have a “Love Basket” available for Bowers Museum, if you wish to donate. Funds go to help Bowers Museum to keep offering these fine programs, create new ones and to refurbish the artifacts. Of course November 8 is a long way off-but as “time flies” it is good to put in a “save the date” now! There will be a sign-up sheet closer to the date so I may plan on seating and possibly purchase goodies to sell. The pro-ceeds raised will go into the ADVENTURERS fund so we can have future gatherings that offer more variety, infor-mation or (my personal favorite) food! All non-perishable foods/beverages that are unsold will be donated to the needy coming into the church office. And that is what we ADVENTURERS do! We have many great adven-tures but we always keep our focus on caring. Caring for each other, and those we haven’t met yet, upon this life-long journey with Jesus Christ. Yours in fellowship, Mary Keough

SUNDAY SCHOOL By Kim Wilmoth

At the beginning of the month, we started our Sunday school program after our summer Sunday school program, Circle of Friends. I have put together Sunday school schedules for the 2013-2014 school year, however I still have some holes I need to fill. I feel that Aldersgate is such a wonderful place for children. It is truly the dedication and commitment of the Sunday school teachers that make it such a warm and welcoming place to be on Sunday. If you decide to be a part of the team, a lot of the work is done for you. I will mail you a copy of the lesson the week before you teach so you can have the opportunity to review it. Any of the supplies you might need, I will gather for you and put in a tote and bring it to your room on Sunday morning. You are always free to add in your own ideas, but anything called for in the curriculum will be ready for you. Currently we use a program called Grow. It is from Cokesbury, a Methodist publisher, and does a good job of teaching important Bible stories and concepts of our religion. Most teachers commit to teaching once a month. Ideally it would be great to have the same teacher in the room every week, but with busy schedules and a desire to go and hear the sermon, a once a month commitment seems to work for most. The nice part is that it is the same 4 or 5 rotating and there is consistency in that.

Here are my current needs….. 1. Pre-school teacher (blue room) – a teacher the second Sunday of the month. Preschoolers are 3 (and Potty trained) through entering kindergarten. 2. Kindergarten/First (purple room) – a teacher the first Sunday of the month 3. Kindergarten/First (purple room) -- a teacher every other 2nd Sunday of the month. 4. 2nd/3rd grade -- I am looking for a person just to be a helper the 1st Sunday of the month. I have a lead teacher, but there needs to be two people in a classroom. 5. 2nd/3rd - a teacher every fourth Sunday of the month 6. 4th/5th grade – a teacher every 3rd Sunday of the month Please email [email protected] if you feel like this is an area you could help with. It is so much fun, less than an hour, and only once a month. And, you can always attend second service to hear the sermon!!

FINANCIAL FACTS The Children’s Education program, under the direction of Kim Wilmoth, is featured this month as the first in a series of articles highlighting how your contributions are being used to further the the ministries of Aldersgate. Thank you for your stewardship! Norm Henke, Financial Secretary Each and every week when you place your check in the offering plate, that money goes to many places. First it goes up to the counters and then money is properly put into designated accounts. Much of the offering goes to support the ministries that this church offers. I know I made that sound all too easy, but you offerings help in so many ways. The money that is designated towards children’s ministries goes towards buying the curriculum. We use a curriculum series through the publisher Cokesbury. Each and every lesson comes with a teacher lesson as well as take-home and in-class materials for the children. Each and every Sunday we use: glue, markers, stickers, yarn, clay, pencils, colored pencils, scissors and so much more. Here is just one way your offering helps. You money also supports programs like Zero Gravity, Advent Festival, Easter brunch, church picnics and Vacation Bible School. Each one of these events is planned with purpose and intentionality. They are designed to allow children to feel included and a part of this church. You offering is helping to create life long church goers who will in-turn support the church as they grow older.

at (714) 542-5936. All prayer requests are placed in the church prayer book and the staff and pastors pray for these people weekly. To respect the privacy of those in need, we publish only the names of those who give us permission to do so. Let us support you in prayer! If you are interested in becoming a member of the prayer chain, please contact the church office.

Prayer Shawl Ministry... ...meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. During August, the group will be meeting from 3pm to 5pm in the Fireside Room. If you are interested in being part of this important and meaningful ministry, please feel free to attend a meeting—even if you have no experience, there are knitters and crocheters willing to help those that are just getting started. Please feel free to contact Phyllis Gavitt if you have any questions or need further information about the group.

BeFriender Ministers The BeFriender ministry of Aldersgate is a listening presence. This ministry is not a ministry of "doing", but of "being,"--being present and listening quietly. Everyone is, at times, on a difficult journey and needs a caring companion who will listen, empathize, and be a reminder of a caring, faith community. All requests and meetings are confidential. This ministry comes under the umbrella of the Care and Nurture team. If you are interested, or know of someone who might be, do not hesitate to contact Rev. Robb or Elsie Hale. You can also fill out one of the cards in the pews and put it in the offering plate or make a notation in the red attendance book.

GriefShare is a special weekly seminar/support group for people grieving the death of someone close. It is a place where you can be around people who understand how you feel and the pain of your loss. At GriefShare, you’ll learn valuable information that will help you through this difficult time in your life. For more information contact Elsie Hale at (714)838-4111 or Mary Lynn Norby at (714) 832-4678..

Save the Date: November 23, 2013 "Surviving the Holidays" during grief workshop will be held on Saturday, November 23 at 2:00 PM in the Upstairs Library

The youth at Aldersgate kicked off the new school year this month and are as busy as ever! We had a great time welcoming our incoming 6th graders at our annual Welcome Back pool party! We invaded the Fuesler’s house and had a great time in fellowship swimming, playing basketball, and enjoying a Mario Kart race on the Wii! We have had a great time getting to know the Fuesler family. At the beginning of September, Pastor Robb, Jennifer, Andy, Abi and

Riah joined us for a “get to know you” session, where we all had fun playing 20 questions and getting better acquainted.

At the end of September, we enjoyed a night of music and coffee at a concert benefiting the youth group. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to enjoy the music and the time together. We truly appreciate all of the support you give to these amazing youth!

We finished up our Bible study series on John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and were excited to dive right in to a new study. We will be exploring the prophets of the Old Testament. We are looking forward to studying some books of the Bible that are often overlooked.

We are looking forward to a fall season of service, fun and fellowship. In October, the youth and their families will be serving Sunday Suppers together. We will also be doing some evening programs regarding affirmations where the youth will be giving and receiving compliments. We are looking forward to our annual Halloween Sleep Over, followed by a day at Fall Fest! The youth are excited to be working booths at Fall Fest, as well as enjoying time together with their church family.

It is an exciting time for the youth group as we begin a new year together. Thank you so much for all of your love and support!

by Kim Wilmoth The Second Sunday of every month is Family Worship!

The second Sunday of every month all children, 4th grade and up, stay in worship with their families. As worship is foundational for the Christian life, this is a great

opportunity for children to deepen their faith through the experience of worship. (It may be helpful to think of questions you can ask your children about their experience of worship afterwards, e.g., ‘Which hymn was your favorite this morning? What do you think was the main point of the sermon? Was there a time in the service where you really felt God’s presence?) Worshipping together as a family can open up the doors for discussion and it teaches children that church is a place they are welcomed. It is helpful to consider that children grow spiritually by participating in the worship life of the church. Children also experience the world through their bodies and make meaning about these experiences through their senses. Children have a strong need to belong.

ZERO GRAVITY We had a SUPER first meeting last week and are anxious for the next

time we get together!! Calling all 4th and 5th graders…… Zero Gravity….nothing holds us down! You know, gravity is that thing that keeps us to the ground. It’s what pulls us to the ground when we fall. But with God and the love of God, nothing can keep us down. So join us for pizza, games, and fellowship (that’s getting to know everyone and hanging out). Overall, it is just going to be a good time Plan for these fun dates to come: (all from 5:30 – 6:30 in room 8) October 13th – Minute to Win It November 10th – Western Round –Up …Y’all come down now, ya hear? November 24th – All Church Advent Festival – a night for the whole family December 8th – Crazy Christmas Family Game Night, Pizza dinner and caroling afterwards! Recycling by Margaret Henke, Environmental Ministries Co-Chair

Thanks to Beth and Tom Glen, Environmental Ministries now has a more visible recycle bin for the disposable coffee cups and paper water cups. It will be placed by the coffee table on Sunday mornings and by the door to the kitchen at our Wednesday night dinners. We hope this will make it easier for people to recycle and keep trash out of our environment. Thanks for your cooperation!

Booting the Bottle by Margaret Henke, Environmental Ministries Co-Chair

It may be time to revisit the issue of bottled water. Even though quite a few individuals have switched to carrying their own reusable bottles and filling them with filtered water from the tap, we still see many plastic water bottles at the gym and whole cases of them leaving Costcos and other big discount stores. Here in the U.S., we throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.

Adding insult to injury, as much as 50% of the “empties” or 30 million bottles a day end up polluting landfills as they leach chemicals into the groundwater for the next 1,000 years. There are just not enough companies recycling bottles here in the U. S. and China will not take them anymore, so they sit on the docks in Long Beach and San Francisco looking for a new home. The few that may actually get recycled are actually downcycled, meaning they are being turned into other products leaving most new water bottles to require virgin plastic.

Bottled water in general is nothing more than a massive marketing success. It is water in a bottle, sucked out of the 1 percent of the planet’s water that is drinkable, processed by some global subsidiary, trucked to your town and sold to you at a hilarious markup. If we had read, in a 1907 novel, about some guy standing on the sidewalk hawking water in bottles, the character would be depicted as a charlatan. Today bottled water has become routine, and you see these bottles everywhere.

Most people do not think about the environmental costs of this habit, but there are many—the amount of oil and water needed to make them, for example. The manufacturing and transfer of the bottles consume millions of gallons of oil. Over 1.5 million barrels of oil were used to make the plastic bottles consumed in the US last year–and that doesn’t include the petroleum used to transport them. To put that in perspective, that’s enough petroleum to power 100,000 automobiles for a year!

Drinking bottled water actually wastes water as well, and in a world where many people don’t have adequate drinking water, that’s just wrong. Manufacturing a plastic water bottle necessitates using three times as much water as the actual capacity of the bottle!

Both the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Environmental Working Group have studied bottled waters and found, among other things, that they are unregulated. They are often just packaged tap water (label images to the contrary), and often violate safe drinking water standards and/or contain chemicals used in plastics manufacture. Coca-Cola (Dasani) and Pepsi Co. (Aquafina) use municipal tap water, for example. And yes, you are taking someone else’s water, and causing it to be shipped to you at the climate’s expense. Tap water is strictly regulated, so may actually be healthier.

There are many reasons not to use bottled water but we realize that sometimes when we are traveling it may be the only choice. In order to encourage the use of reusable bottles however, the Environmental Ministries group would like to provide all of the Fall Fest volunteers with bottles on October 26th. Kim Wilmoth provided them for the Aldersgate picnic a couple of years ago, and we commend her that. The only problem I see is that the water will not be as cold as many may like it. (I always put lots of ice cubes in mine before I fill it) Maybe we can have some ice available so that those who wish can add some. We all want to be better stewards of God’s creation and this is one small action we can take to save water and resources. Thanks for caring!

As we walked in, for Sunday worship service, Sue Bishop greeted my husband,

Allen, and me. She asked us, “Would you like to represent Aldersgate United Methodist

Church, Tustin, California, and volunteer to tell folks about Heifer International at the

Orange County Fair this summer?” and, to Sue's surprise, we said, “Why, yes, we would!”

You see, Allen and I have been long-time supporters of Heifer International When our children were small, and

we were Sunday School teachers, our Sunday School students collected funds for cows, bees, and goats. So, when

Sue Bishop asked us to volunteer at the Orange County Fair, to represent Aldersgate, and tell folks about Heifer

International, we said YES!

In preparation for the Orange County Fair, Sue Bishop asked us to attend a Heifer International training.

During the training, Allen and I learned about the mission of Heifer, to end hunger and poverty in a sustainable

way. Heifer works with families all across the globe. Heifer gives the families a hand up, not a hand out. Heifer

brings communities together and links them to markets in their areas. Because of the efforts of Heifer Interna-

tional, and folks like us at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Tustin, millions of people will be nourished by

milk, eggs, and fresh vegetables. Families, that only knew poverty, will be building businesses. Heifer Interna-

tional provides long-term solutions to long term situations.

With the Orange County Fair just a few weeks away, Allen and I wanted to learn as much as we could about Heif-

er International. We had a trip scheduled to Little Rock, Arkansas, for my dad's retirement (he practiced medi-

cine in Little Rock for 50 years). We knew that Heifer International was headquartered in Little Rock, so, Allen

and I planned a visit.

What a visit it was! There were three parts to our Little Rock visit: the interactive, educational building,

the “green” headquarter office buildings, and the Heifer Ranch. The educational, interactive building, and the

“green building” are located at 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202, near the Clinton Library. The education,

interactive building was very informative. Our eyes were open when we saw how many people, around the

globe, live. I was shocked to find out that half of the world's population lives on less than $2.00 per day. After the

interactive, educational building, we walked next door to the “green” headquarter office building. We were

amazed by the Heifer International's Green Building. Its green design set a new standard in sustainable develop-

ment. Even the parking lot was “green”. After our tour of the “green” building, we headed to the Heifer Ranch,

which is 45 minutes northwest of Little Rock, in Perryville, Arkansas. Heifer Ranch offers programs, such as

multi-night programs that provide a first-hand look at the challengers surrounding hunger and poverty. For ex-

ample, Allen and I saw an abandoned bus that participants may live in during their stay at Heifer Ranch.

When it came time for the Heifer International volunteer time at the Orange County Fair, Allen and I

were ready! Did you know that a goat can provide a family with a gallon of milk a day? When Heifer Internation-

al provides a goat to a family, the goat comes to the family pregnant. This allows the goat to be able to give the

family milk. The family, that receives the goat, must promise to give the offspring to another family. During our

brief volunteer time at The Orange County Fair, we got to know the Heifer International goat, Lola. Lola was only

six months old. Fairgoers were able to pet Lola, and, we were able to share a bit about Heifer International with

them. Here is an image of Allen Buchanan, volunteering with Heifer International, with Lola the goat, at the Or-

ange County Fair, 2013.

Sunday Suppers News

Volunteer Highlight

Washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen are some of the more “invisible” volunteer jobs for Sunday Suppers, but we have a steadfast and cheerful team who are truly Christ’s example of humble giving. Dave Kendall, Lynn Lampert, Reed Tibbetts and Helen Waterson volunteer almost every month with dish soap up to their elbows and dishcloths at the ready. Theirs is a gift from the heart. They are a joyful and fun presence in the kitchen – many interesting conversations over soapy water makes great camaraderie. Please consider being part of this special team or volunteering for other jobs. We always need help and welcome new people into this meaningful Sunday of service.

Youth Group Volunteering in October

UMYF is volunteering to serve the October 20 Sunday Supper. All youth must be 13 years or older to serve and have a liability waiver signed by their guardian. Parents are welcome to serve with their youth. Scott and Lisa will be coordinating signups. We will need some of our regular volunteers to take some jobs, so please look for your monthly email or contact Ann DiPlacito.

Our guests are homeless people, families struggling with unemployment, the working poor, and seniors. All are welcome. We collect groceries and serve supper at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on the third Sunday of every month. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Ann DiPlacito at 949-857-2398 or [email protected].
