Off to Market...
Several years ago I was on the staff of a very prestigious international multi discipline dance conference. One of the topics of the leaders that week was “Getting more young people into the dance activity.” The solution presented by the committee leader involved hiring and training a group of young white-teethed models to dance and filming a commercial that showed them dancing to upbeat music wearing hip clothes and having a wonderful time. The commercials would be distributed among the dance community to air within their own areas with a tag at the end promoting area classes. I’m not sure if the group ever produced the spots or if they ever aired anywhere, but I was intrigued by the marketing sense that was at work. The idea of using beautiful people to sell is nothing new. From Paris Hilton making whoopee to a hamburger on the car hood, to Charo plugging car insurance, we love to let celebrities and the pretty people tell us what’s “cool.” I would love to be a fly on the wall during the drive home after the first group of young people show up at the clogging class expecting to find all of the white-teethed juicy fruit models, just to find a middle aged teacher like myself and a dozen or so students wanting to try their hand at what they just saw “All That” do on America’s Got Talent. There is no doubt that popular culture has an effect on our clogging classes and the activity itself. Those of us who have taught long enough remember the boost we got from Urban Cowboy, then the drop in attendance when everyone switched to “Achey Breaky”, then the resurgence of interest following Riverdance. Clogging has gotten a great deal of attention in the last few years and more and more people are understanding that clogging is a dance and “not a plumbing problem.” Fall classes are starting soon and there is no reason why you can’t jump on the marketing bandwagon and teach “AMERICAN CLOGGING... AS SEEN ON TELEVISION!” So what if you aren’t all that... make it fun and make their feet moving right away and if their spirit was meant to dance it will. Even Mike Curtis of tv’s “All That” will quickly tell you that he got his start in the classes of a middle aged but very energetic clogging teacher named Charlie Burns. Our dance has endless possibilities for all ages, dance levels and teeth-whitenesses. Don’t try to change the packaging, the name or the demographics, just put on the music and let clogging sell itself.
Happy Clogging, Jeff Driggs

at the Memorial Day Clogging Spec-tacular in Columbus, Ohio. It was great to see all of you guys on stage to-gether doing what you do best! Also, Donna Rohe -- one of my cloggers in Republic, Ohio that dances with Heartland Express -- has been diagnosed with pancre-atic cancer. Would you and your readers please keep her in your prayers?

Time Out Just to correct you when you state in your article in the double-toe magazine. Clog is not another word for time but the footwear worn by the many workers because it was cheap but robust. People in the 60+ age group cur-rently living mainly in North West England tell me that they still wore clogs to go to school in. The Guild of Clogs and Patten makers existed from approx 1600. Pattens were like a small stilt that the person would slip their shoe in to protect it from the filth of the roads. You can see a similar idea with Japanese footwear. The origin of the word clog is thought to have come from the dutch although the English (sorry British) clog is a leather top nailed to the wooden sole. Many of the workers moved into towns and cities during the industrial revolution and the early industrial looms had a rythm very like the shuffle step, repeated. The early origins of clog dancing (dancing with clogs on) will have started from people experimenting with the then country dance and wearing clogs as that was their only footwear (maybe a second pair for Sunday best). Irish immigrants to England would have added their styles as well. When the British immigrants then shipped over to America they took their styles with them but up-graded their footwear to boots. I’ve attached a picture of a pair of clogs. These are lace up but
buyckles and clasps are also used to fasten them. Obvioulsy for fast and furious stepping (clog dancing using the wooden soles to create the sound) the lace style stay firmly attached to the feet.
Phil [email protected]
Dear Phil: Thanks for your email about the origins of the word clog. I agree that the word clog refers to the show worn by workers in the Lancashire Region of England. A Gaelic word for clock is “clag” and clogging is done in time with the music. In a history of clog-ging I refered to this root and in the many republishings and editings of the article, the reference of the word “clock” was replaced with “time” and the description short-ened. In the redo of our own site, we published the shortened ver-sion. We have since begun work on a new site and will include the proper definition and reference to the shoes used in the original clog dance. What a wonderful craft to continue to make such wonderful shoes!
A Prayer Request I am sending you a couple of photos that one of my dancers took

By Elaine Brock, NY The Nickel City Festival Committee and the Western New York Cloggers Association were very proud to welcome over 600 dancers and family members to Grand Island, New York to celebrate the 20P anniversary of our Nickel City Festival. Visitors from 15 states, as well as our good friends from Canada, began arriving on Thursday to help kick off the “Party Time” celebration activities. Again this year, the Holiday Inn Resort and Conference Center, by the shores of our mighty Niagara River was the picturesque site of this year’s Festival which ran from April 6 through April 8 . The Western New York Cloggers Association gave a great big welcome to these featured national instructors: Scotty Bilz, Charlie Bums, Jeff Driggs, Shane Gruber, Jill Gunzel, Sallie Adkins James, Kelli McChesney, Jim Naylor, Matt Sexton, Missy Shinoski, and Steve Smith. Also lending their talents to this impressive group were our guest and our regional instructors: Dale Burl, Johanna Dash, Tricia Profic, Lynda Vaadi, Michelle Rohring with Janice Agusta, plus Karen Elder, and Elaine Paugh. What a pleasure it was to have Steve Smith return - - “I am delighted to be back in Nickel City,” Steve stated. “It has been 6 or 7 years since I last visited ... I will be doing Mr. BoJangles, for the first time in ten years, in the Show. Nickel City is one of my most favorite workshops!” Shane Gruber also mentioned how good it was to have Steve back.
“Nickel City is a fantastic place to attend - - everyone should have the opportunity to take a trip here - - the staff is great, really know how to put the program together, and the Festival runs smoothly - - like a finely oiled machine.” Shane also added, “I was impressed with the huge crowds and proud to share the spotlight with all the great instructors.” A fun night with request, easy teaches, and fun dances got underway Thursday evening in the Settlement Hall for the over 300 early visitors who had already arrived and settled in. Shane, Kelli. and Scotty, plus local instructors, kept everyone entertained for the evening. Kelli commented, “This is my first year teaching at Nickel City and I think the Festival is great! I am, so happy to see how friendly and hospitable everyone is and the awesome enthusiasm the dancers have for clogging.” Workshops began bright and early Friday morning with three available halls open for dancing. As more cloggers were checking into the hotel, many others could be found hurrying back and forth between workshops, and the variety of vendors setting up shop kept the Holiday Inn a very busy place. In addition to clogging routines being taught, seminars were conducted by Scotty Bilz and Missy Shinoski. Missy Commented, “I am having a great time here, as always, and so glad to see lots of energy and fun at the teaches. This is my 3`d year of teaching and I am glad to see that it isn’t snowing!” Friday evening

featured the `Trail In’ dance in the main Ballroom, a request hall in the Settlement room, and an exclusive pool party for cloggers in the hotel pool. There’s always something to do here at Nickel City! A special moment for the Nickel City Festival was the presentation of the 6th annual Western New York Cloggers Association Hall of Fame Awards, which purpose is to recognize individuals who have contributed significantly to the perpetuation of clogging in the Western New York region. This year we were proud to honor Steve Smith, Jeff Driggs, Spencer Thompson, Mattie & Louise Kazoduj, Patty Gunner, Dave Profic, and Janice Agusta and Brandon Collins. They have all made many contributions of their time and talents to Nickel City and have helped to keep things running smoothly over the years. Congratulations to these outstanding and very deserving individuals! Michelle Rohring remarked, “I was so pleased to see my Mom, Janice Agusta, receive a Hall of Fame award. It is so nice to see how the Festival has expanded over the years - - there is so much here to keep everyone busy. I have been coming here for 20 years now, never missed a year, and will keep coming back!” Janice added, “The Nickel City Festival is good therapy and keeps all of us going. There has been amazing growth over the years and I just love it!” Saturday morning the halls were again filled with cloggers busy scheduling which workshops in the five available halls they would visit throughout the day. Every level of clogging and every type of music
- - from country and bluegrass to rock and hip hop, - - plus a seminar by Jeff Driggs, were offered. After Jeff’s arrival at the Festival was delayed due to high winds in Pittsburgh, we were so pleased to have him “back in action” with his hilarious antics. Cloggers exiting his halls were still chuckling on their way out! Jeff commented, “It was an honor to be inducted into the Nickel City Hall of Fame. (Hope it doesn’t mean that you are retiring me - - that I can’t come back!) As always, the Festival was great - - hope to come back many, many more times!” As usual, all the vendors were doing a brisk business, while door prizes, 50l50, and basket raffles were available to anyone who wanted to “try their luck.” There is much to do around the Grand Island setting of Nickel City as cloggers can visit nearby Niagara Falls, the casinos, or our outlet malls. In between nailing taps on shoes, Sally volunteered, “Once again I am so happy to be back “home” again with my New York family. 1 married Rick James in December - - he calls me his tax deduction now - - in fact he proposed to me while we visited Niagara Falls after the Festival last year! It is thrilling to see the “oldies” back here together again - - Steve and Charlie. And, watch out next year, Rick & I will have graduated from our massage therapy schooling - - so be ready to relax with a massage!” Charlie Burns added, “This is definitely my favorite place and always has been. I enjoyed partnering up on stage with Steve Smith - - it was a nice reunion. It was like “old times” when the four of us (Steve, Jeff Scotty, and I) would really cut up on stage. We shared many, many

Nickel City Festival(Continued from page 10)good times. Again, this will be my last Festival that I attend before I officially retire.” During the weekend special recognition was given to Lisa Cook from Backwoods Cloggers for receiving the Western New York Cloggers Association Scholarship, and also to Shannon Farrell from Kickin’ Rhythm Cloggers for receiving the Phyllis Antos Scholarship which is supported by the Erie Canal Cloggers. Congratulations to both of you, and good luck with your schooling! The door decoration contest was again held this year and congratulations go out to Dave Profic, Brandon Collins and Mike Nowak for taking l’ place honors with their expanded hall and doorway decorations, complete with lots of flashing lights! 2”d place honors went to the Clogging Grandmothers, Joyce Virtue, Sam Holley, Gail VanDam, Isobel Williamson, Cora Kreachan, and Marilyn Eige, from Lindsay, Ont. Every floor held many colorful and original door decorations and all were very outstanding, making it very difficult to choose the best! Many thanks to all who joined in the fun and made the walk through the halls very entertaining! Thanks to Bonnie Linhardt for making possible the stroll down memory lane with her extensive history and photo display of past Nickel City Festivals. As the Saturday workshops concluded, many moved on to a wonderful buffet dinner in the Riverview room with bluegrass music supplied by a local popular band, “Creekbend”. Show participants were gearing up for the highlight of the weekend - - the Saturday evening presentation, “Party Time,” a celebration of 20 years of our Nickel City Festivals, written by Pam Brody, and directed by Cheri Truax. Approximately 150 cloggers, (representing 14 teams), actors, singers, and cast people participated, and an impressive display of talent was exhibited by these groups who all contributed to the enjoyment of the crowds: Tonawanda Clog-Hopper Crickets, Funky Rhythm Cloggers, A11 Western New York (Tensation), Traveling Shoes, Still Kickin’ Rhythm Cloggers, Simcce County Cloggers, Sittin’ Kickin’ Rhythm Cloggers, Backwoods, Too!, Krazy Kanuck Kloggers, Tonawanda Clog-Hoppers, Kickin’ Rhythm Cloggers, Backwoods Cloggers, Fancy Free Cloggers, and the Almost Kickin’ Rhythm Cloggers. Jeff Driggs, as Elton John, kept the audience laughing, and one of the highlights was the performance by Steve Smith,

Our Dancing SpiritClogging is our dance of joy.Spirit’s spiral, lost in sound.Sweeping motion to enjoy,
punding echoes earthward bound.
Turning, moving... all as one.“Dance of Life,” I want to shout.
Fellow cloggers know the fun, rhythmic foot sounds carry out.
Joy wells up within my chest, circling in the moment round.
Energy swells to a crest, bursts of life into the ground
We clog because we can.

dancing his very own rendition of “Mr. Bojangles,” which also brought a tear or two to many in the audience. Later, the main Ballroom held an open dance for any and all cloggers with lots more energy to dance their socks off! Karen Elder remarked, “This is my 2”d time teaching at Nickel City and it is the best Festival that I have ever been to. It is so well organized, very professional, and everything is on time. The Show was so polished with its excellent lighting, music, sound system, etc. Nothing can compare!” Our local instructors consider it a privilege to teach at the Nickel City Festival. Dale Bur) says, “Nickel City is my home and nothing tops it. This is one big family reunion!” Hanna Dash added, “I grew up here in the Festival, as I began attending at age nine. It is my most favorite workshop of all!” Tricia Profic mentioned, “There are a warm, supportive, and fun group of people here.” Lynda Vaadi commented, “The country tunes and traditional dances are very enjoyable (which Scotty and Charlie have kept alive.) The location at the Holiday Inn is ideal with everything here and contained.” Elaine Paugh, a visiting instructor added, “It was very nostalgic for me to see Steve Smith again. I remember as a child seeing him teach and thinking “Wow!” Jill Gunzel observed, “Nickel City is fantastic, the audience is fabulous and the most `cloggingest’ group I’ve even seen!” Jim Naylor loved the great reception the instructors receive here. Matt Sexton, upon his first visit to Nickel City stated, “It has been a remarkable experience, and I am having a great time - - everyone has treated me so well!” Many, many special thanks go out to Ken and Linda Haley, and all their hard-working committee people, volunteers, and all the participants who did a fantastic job coordinating this year’s Festival. This event would not be a success without their service and dedication. A big thank you to all who attended and supported our Nickel City Festival! Come and be a part of Nickel
City next year, and join us on April 19, 20, and 21, 2007, again at the Holiday Inn, Grand Island, New York. As Scotty Bilz says, “Nickel City is the best workshop on the planet!!” We can hardly wait ‘til next year and look forward to seeing everyone again. Mark your calendars and you are all invited to join us for Nickel City’s “Shuffle off to Buffalo!”

NStep Dancesto a New BeatBy Lisa RobersonChillicothe, OH Gazette Pregnant and due to give birth in four weeks. Tired and hot after standing in the blazing sun for hours as she watched her dreams go up in smoke. And, emotionally drained from the exhausting day that hit her head-on. That is how Allison Bowling, proprietor of N’Step Dance Troupe, started her day when a quick July phone call alerted her to a fire at 33 E. Second Street in Chillicothe, Ohio, the location her dance studio once called home. She rushed to the scene, hoping and praying along the way something could be saved. Arriving moments later she knew upon first glance that was not going to be possible. So, like many others she settled in at a spot along the sidewalk and watched as more than 50 firefight-ers from four departments worked all day to get the blaze under control. A defeatist attitude took hold of Bowl-ing settling deep within her bones. “I felt like I had wasted the last nine years,” she said. “At times it is hard when you are an artist or performer because it’s really like that starving artist theory. You’re scrapping and it seems so hard for nine years trying to get together all the costumes, the shoes and the props.” Bowling said that was her focus Monday when she saw the smoke and the fire because N’Step is not just a hobby for her. “This is my way of being a mother and working at the same time,” she said. “I can set my own schedule and keep my kids with me. Anyone who knows me knows that. That is what N’Step is. You don’t just get me, you get all of it like a package deal.” Then, she said, something simple, yet, miraculous happened: Her cell phone started to ring. And, Bowling said she was reminded of something
she was forgetting because her mind was focused on her material loss. “What I realized this morning is that N’Step is in the heart and feet of about 60 kids in Chillicothe,” she said. “That is still here even though I have lost everything else.” “But the other half of my business is still here: the people.” Bowling and others in community are also counting their blessings in another way. The Majestic Performing Arts Center, located across a beautifully landscaped courtyard at 45 E. Second St., was spared. The theater, built in 1853, is well known as the oldest and longest continually operating theater in the country. It survived with no damage. “We still have the Majestic so we still have a stage to dance on, to prac-tice on,” Bowling said with optimism. N’Step started about five years ago, the dream of the Bowling family. For four years prior to the dance troupe’s inception, the Bowling Fam-ily danced alone as an unit. However, as each child grew older Bowling said the need for partners and teams pushed her to look beyond her own house for talent.
It started out as a small group. Bowling ran into many in the commu-nity who wanted to join, but couldn’t afford the cost. Free classes at the Carver Community Center solved that problem. “Eventually it got to the point where I was able to branch off and make a business out of it,” she said. “It actu-ally started out as a passion for me and my family and it just extended into N’Step today.” But, the best part of the dance troupe, she said, is the closest they feel for one another. “They all called and tried to rally around me,” she said.
Editor’s Note: A happy footnote to this story is that many clogging teams and fellow cloggers have pitched in to give the group costumes and cash donations. The Double Toe Times gave the group a sound system, Carl’s Clogging Supply sent shoes for the family and the Clogging Champions of America sponsored a cash donation. Cloggers always come together to help their own! Also, the Bowlings welcomed a beautiful baby girl to the family a few weeks later!
