FIELD MEETING REPORT– PAPHOS HEADLAND AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE 1st

November 2014 John Stapley

A smaller-than-usual group (only 10 of us) set off from the beach car park south towards the headland. The sky was very overcast, with just a few patches of blue showing through. An early arriver had seen a Meadow Pipit within the fenced area. On the shore, trying to shelter from the wind, we found three Greater Sand Plover and one Common Sandpiper. A flock of twenty or so European Goldfinch flitted overhead (the first of several such flocks seen during the morning). Hooded Crow scavenged amongst the rocks and a single Crested Lark searched for food on the path ahead. A fourth Greater Sand Plover was spotted some distance up the coast. Usually these birds are found together in a single communal group – perhaps there had been a family tiff?

One of the Greater Sand Plover seen during the field trip. Photograph by Julie Smart. As we walked along the coastal path around the perimeter of the Archaeological Site, the gull seen way out to sea was presumed to be a Yellow-legged Gull. We also spotted several Common Stonechat, a juvenile Red-backed Shrike perched on a low bush, a Common Kestrel hunting in the distance and heard a Zitting Cisticola. Once through the entrance to the Site, we heard the first of several European Robin while in a nearby bush was a mixed flock of House and Spanish Sparrow. Colin and John had both seen their first Western Black Redstarts of the season in their respective gardens that morning. It was no surprise therefore to find that there had been a large overnight influx of the species when one was seen perched on a low wall some 35 metres away – we must have then seen another 10+ during the walk. A pair of Sardinian Warbler flitted between bushes nearby.

Page 8: The Monthly Checklist - BirdLife Cyprus...Saturday 28 th February: Asprokremmos Dam and Mandria Leader: Colin Richardson. Home Tel: 26946682 Winter visitors and early spring migrants

The long avenue of trees yielded a host of species including two White Wagtail, several Common Chiffchaff, a small group of Great Tit while a larger flock of some twenty to thirty European Greenfinch flew from one tree-top to another seemingly uncertain where to settle. A singing Eurasian Blackcap and the contact call of a Common Chaffinch were both heard from low bushes alongside the trees. We disturbed a Eurasian Collared Dove which had been feeding close to the path. Looking across the open area towards the ‘Forum’ and ‘Odeon’, we focused on a female Northern Wheatear, a lone Eurasian Skylark and a flock of European Goldfinch which also included a small number of Common Linnet. Crested Lark were also present here while in the distance was a pair of Common Wood Pigeons. Nick spotted a bird flying roughly west to east along the shore. Unfortunately, most people missed it completely or saw it only when it was very distant. The consensus of those that did get a sight was that it appeared to be a Glossy Ibis. By this time, the clouds looked threatening and there were distant rumbles of thunder coming at us from two sides. Discretion took over and we decided to cut short the excursion around the Archaeological site, instead heading for the exit turnstile for which – thanks to our useful contacts within the Department of Antiquities – we had a key. Immediately on exiting through the gate, we caught a brief glimpse of a Common Kingfisher perched on a water’s-edge rock before it flew off. We made it back to the car park just as the rain started. Some of the party had already departed when a Ruddy Turnstone was spotted some distance along the shore. Then in moving closer to try to get a better view, we saw a Whimbrel just in front of the cafe which had previously been obscured from view. These two species – ones that regularly spend much of the winter on the headland shores - provided a fitting end to a pleasant morning’s birding. Unfortunately, neither bird stayed long enough for lengthy observation, but they proved a welcome ‘tick’ for a couple of our visiting members.

FIELD MEETING REPORT – AKROTIRI PENINSULA 15

th November 2014

June Neal

The day began with a very wet start to the morning in the hills, following overnight storms with heavy rain. Birdwatchers travelling from Nicosia and Paphos met hail storms, torrential rain and then sunshine on their journey to Zakaki Pool in Limassol. Fortunately that part of Limassol had fared better and the paths to the hide were relatively dry. Twelve of us met up and between us enjoyed the birds that were there. The smaller species were feeding around the pools and in the reeds – a male and a female Bluethroat, a Common Reed Bunting, a Moustached Warbler, a Western Black Redstart, two Common Kingfisher, two Penduline Tit and several Common Chiffchaff. The medium-sized feeding birds included a couple of Water Pipit, a handful of White Wagtail, a first winter Little Stint and Temminck’s Stint, a Common Snipe and a Water Rail heard early on arrival. On the pool, its shores and island were two Little Grebe, a pair of Mallard, at least 27 Common Teal, a few Grey Heron (those remaining after 43 others flew off early in the morning towards the Salt Lake) and two or three Little Egret. Common Black-headed Gull numbers increased during our stay until about 100 congregated and came down to drink and then fly around the area. An immature male Western Marsh Harrier and a Common Kestrel were the only raptors present. The heavens opened and the water levels in the pools quickly rose as the heavy rain fell. Eventually a lull in the storm allowed us to get to our cars and make our way to the Akrotiri

Page 9: The Monthly Checklist - BirdLife Cyprus...Saturday 28 th February: Asprokremmos Dam and Mandria Leader: Colin Richardson. Home Tel: 26946682 Winter visitors and early spring migrants

Environmental and Education in Akrotiri. After observing the 100 or so Greater Flamingo and Grey Heron on the lake, a Common Kestrel, plus the couple of European Robin and a Black Redstart in the grounds, we were treated to an informative and excellent film about the area, its history, birds, fauna and marine life. Our thanks go to the centre’s staff for this providing us with this opportunity. Making our way to Bishop’s Pool more Common Stonechat and a couple of Crested Lark were seen, plus Robins heard singing. It was drizzling when we reached the pool but not hard enough to deter us from noting the waterbirds – a pair of Northern Pintail, a female Eurasian Wigeon, a few Northern Shoveler, as well as about a dozen Teal, Common Coot, Little Grebe. A few Robins were seen and heard, some singing between the showers; Common Chaffinch (mainly females) flew around, landing on the bare branches of fir trees. Chiffchaff flitted through the undergrowth, in bushes and in the fruit trees and a couple of Stonechats drew our attention to the overhead wires. A possible female Red-breasted Flycatcher was then spotted on the wires. It flew down into a bush and disappeared for a while whilst the field guides and scopes were sorted out. Another brief flight across the path and it vanished. Meantime a Garden Warbler was seen in flight and a Willow Warbler, sat next to a Chiffchaff on the wires was identified. These were three unlikely species to see at this season. With an ever darkening and forbidding cloud coming our way we departed for Phassouri Reedbeds before the rain became too heavy. Unfortunately the steady rain became a deluge, mixed with hail and most of us decided to call it a day and make for home. Paul, made of sterner stuff, persevered and made his way to Phassouri taking the most delightful photographs of

Moustached Warbler. Moustached Warbler, Phassouri Reed Beds. Photograph by Paul Curry. Two of our original party made their way to Lady’s Mile seeing very many Black-headed Gulls and then an Eurasian Hobby around Amosotos – another unlikely sighting for the time of year. They also saw at least six Water Pipits, a Green Sandpiper and three Barn Swallow at Phassouri before returning to Zakaki Pool where the Striated Heron had appeared.

Page 10: The Monthly Checklist - BirdLife Cyprus...Saturday 28 th February: Asprokremmos Dam and Mandria Leader: Colin Richardson. Home Tel: 26946682 Winter visitors and early spring migrants

It was an interesting field meeting with some exciting and unexpected birds despite the weather. My thanks go to every one for their good company, interest and enthusiasm – and determination not to be deterred by the adverse weather conditions.

NEW YEAR’S GET TOGETHER

The New Year get together will be on Saturday 10th January at "The Swan Akrotiri" restaurant which is opposite the new Akrotiri Environmental and Educational Centre at around 12.00 o'clock. The food will be Cypriot Meze with as much as you can drink red or white wine, draft beer, soft drinks and water. The cost will be 20 Euro per person.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL BIRDWATCHERS AND BIRD PHOTOGRAPHERS

IMPORTANT!

A gentle but necessary reminder to all bird-watchers and all bird photographers:

When you are out enjoying our visitor or resident birds, rare or common, please be sure to remember always to put the welfare of the birds first and also make sure you are not preventing

others from enjoying the birds.

Thank you for putting the birds first!

For information the BirdLife Cyprus Birdwatchers Code (available on the BirdLife Cyprus website) is reprinted below:

A growing number of people enjoy birdwatching in Cyprus – this code puts the interests of birds first and respects the countryside and other people, whether or not they are interested in birds.

Six basic rules:

Avoid disturbing birds and their habitats – the birds’ interests should always come first. Make sure you know the relevant provisions of Cyprus law 152(I)/2003 relating to hunting, bird protection and management.

Be an ambassador for birdwatching.

Respect the countryside.

Send your sightings to the BirdLife Cyprus Bird Recorder, enter them on the Cypriaca internet site and phone interesting sightings in to the BirdLine information service (25 934 076).

Think about the interests of wildlife and local people before passing on news of a rare bird, especially during the breeding season.

Report any incidents of poaching with guns, limesticks or nets to the relevant authorities.

Page 11: The Monthly Checklist - BirdLife Cyprus...Saturday 28 th February: Asprokremmos Dam and Mandria Leader: Colin Richardson. Home Tel: 26946682 Winter visitors and early spring migrants

1. Putting birds first

Whether your particular interest is photography, ringing or just birdwatching, remember that the interests of the bird must always come first.

Avoid going too close to birds or disturbing their habitats – if a bird flies away or makes repeated alarm calls, you’re too close. And if it leaves, you won’t get a good view. Disturbance can keep birds from their nests, leaving chicks hungry or enabling predators to take eggs or young. During cold weather or when migrants have just made a long flight, repeatedly flushing birds can mean they use up vital energy that they need for feeding. Stay on roads and paths where they exist and avoid disturbing habitat used by birds.

Intentional disturbance of birds or their nests during the breeding season is illegal under Cyprus law 152 (I) of 2003 on the protection and management of wild birds and game (this law implements the EU Birds Directive in Cyprus). Also, playing a recording of birdsong or calls to encourage a bird to respond is illegal under the same law. Both these offences are subject to a fine of up to €17,000 and/or up to three years imprisonment. Special permission to use calling devices for research purposes can be sought by applying to the Minister of Interior.

2. Be an ambassador

Think about your fieldcraft and behaviour, not just so that you can enjoy your birdwatching, but so others can too.

Respond positively to questions from interested passers-by. They may not be birdwatchers yet, but a good view of a bird or a helpful answer may light a spark of interest. Your enthusiasm could start a lifetime’s interest in birds and a greater appreciation of wildlife and its conservation. Consider using local services, such as kiosks, coffee shops, restaurants and petrol stations. Raising awareness of the benefits to local communities of trade from visiting birdwatchers may, ultimately, help the birds themselves.

3. Respect the countryside

The Cyprus countryside is generally “open access” but make sure to respect the wishes of local residents and landowners, and don’t enter private land without permission unless it is open for public access. Irresponsible behaviour may cause a landowner to deny access to others (e.g. for necessary survey work). It may also disturb the bird or give birdwatching bad coverage in the media.

4. Send your records in

Add to tomorrow's knowledge of birds by sending your sightings to the BirdLife Cyprus Recorder, Jane Stylianou ([email protected]) and by entering these on the Cyprus chapter of the World Birds database, Cypriaca. If you have an unusual observation to report then please also call the BirdLife Cyprus BirdLife (25 934 076), but bear in mind the notes about rare birds (below).

5. If you discover a rare bird, please bear the following in mind:

Consider the potential impact of spreading the news. Think about whether the site can cope with a large number of visitors and whether sensitive species might be at risk, such as breeding terns, flocks of wading birds or rare plants. The BirdLife Cyprus office or Bird Recorder can advise on this, in confidence and without disseminating information on the sighting.

Page 12: The Monthly Checklist - BirdLife Cyprus...Saturday 28 th February: Asprokremmos Dam and Mandria Leader: Colin Richardson. Home Tel: 26946682 Winter visitors and early spring migrants

Rare breeding birds may abandon their eggs if disturbed and some birds of prey are at risk from persecution. If you discover a rare breeding species that you think is vulnerable, please contact BirdLife Cyprus (tel 22 – 455 072 or [email protected]).

If you have the opportunity to see a rare bird, enjoy it, but don’t let your enthusiasm override common sense. In addition to the guidelines above:

i) If you go to see a rare bird, park sensibly, and don’t get too close for a photograph – you’ll earn the wrath of everyone else if you flush the bird out of sight.

ii) Be patient if the viewing is limited, talk quietly and give others a chance to see the bird too. Do not enter private areas without permission.

iii) Birds should never be flushed in important wildlife habitats or where there are other nesting or roosting birds nearby. Birds should not be flushed more frequently than every two hours nor within two hours of sunrise or sunset, so the bird has chance to feed and rest.

6. Report poaching incidents

Poaching with guns, limesticks and mist nets remains a problem in Cyprus. If you witness any illegal shooting or use of nets, glue sticks or other trapping devices, make sure you report these to the Game Fund or SBA Police, depending where you are, and to BirdLife Cyprus. Relevant numbers are given below.

Do not confront poachers and do not remove limesticks or nets, as this may put you at risk and compromise any legal proceedings against poachers. Make careful notes of where the incident took place and call the authorities and/or BirdLife Cyprus.

Be aware of the relevant provisions of the hunting law:

i) All forms of trapping and use of calling devices are illegal

ii) Hunting is permitted from November to February and mid-August to early October, everywhere except in ‘Game Reserve’ areas, generally (but not exclusively) on Wednesday and Sundays, between dawn and dusk.

iii) Shooting is not permitted within 500 metres of built-up areas; within 200 metres of isolated houses; within fenced-off private land (the fence or wall must be at least 150cm high)

iv) Only game species can be shot. BIRD PHOTO QUIZ Stavros Christodoulides

PHOTO # 23

Last Month’s Quiz answer Thin bill, relatively long legs, long hind claw and streaky plumage suggest that October's mystery bird belongs to the family of Pipits. Several pipit species can be quite similar and very often their call is the easiest way to identify them. However, with care and good views, even non-calling birds can be reasonably straightforward. The colour of the bare parts and the amount of streaking is usually a good place to start when identifying pipits. The orange coloured legs and heavily streaked underparts and upperparts immediately rule out a number of species including Water Pipit (which has dark legs) and Tawny, Richard's and Blyth's Pipits (which show less streaking, especially on their upperparts). We are left with three regularly occurring species and a couple of vagrants. Again the pattern and boldness of the streaking as well as the colour and shape of the bare parts will help in identifying our mystery bird. The upperparts are olive-toned with rather indistinct pale "tram lines", ruling out the browner and more well marked Red-throated Pipit (which also shows bolder underparts streaking). The thin and pointed orange bill and orange legs with long hind claw also rule out Tree and Olive-backed Pipits which show pinkish legs and chunkier bills. Tree Pipit also shows finer streaking on the flanks while Olive-backed has a stronger face pattern, showing a distinctive pale eyebrow. The final species that needs eliminating is Buff-bellied, an extremely rare vagrant with just two records, both in 2013. That species shows darker legs and little streaking in breeding plumage but can be more similar during the autumn/winter period. Nevertheless it is much browner and has a plain back as well as whiter underparts with bolder black contrasting streaks. Therefore our bird is a Meadow Pipit, a common winter visitor which usually arrives in early November and by mid-month is by far the commonest pipit found on the island. Next month: In December’s Monthly Checklist we will include a larger bird photo quiz to keep you busy over the holiday period. Do you have any photos that could be used in it? BEST BIRDING MOMENT OF 2014

At the end of 2012 and 2013 several of you told us of your best birding moment of those years

and it was great reading – you had enjoyed the White Storks at Akrotiri, the Sociable Lapwing,

finally seeing the Wallcreeper, great views of a Bonelli’s Eagle, Hawfinches at Armou, migrating

raptors and photographing a Bluethroat and Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters.

So what about your best birding moment of 2014? What happened this year? Did you find your own raritiy? See the elusive White-throated Kingfisher? Were you able to get to see the Striated Heron at Zakaki? Did you finally see one of your target species? Watch the raptor passage over Akrotiri this autumn? Watch your ‘own’ Barn Swallows arrive and raise their young on your verandah?

Let us know what yours was and we will print them in the January 2015 issue of the Monthly Checklist in an end of 2014 round up. You can add as much or as little detail as you want, a sentence is enough – the only provisio is that your best birding moment must have taken place in Cyprus and in 2014.

Either email [email protected] or call her on 99558953 with your birding moment of 2014. Please send by 10 January 2015.

STRIATED HERON – FIRST RECORD FOR CYPRUS

Jane Stylianou

On 26th October a photograph of a juvenile heron appeared on the BirdLife Cyprus Facebook

group which had been taken that day at Zakaki Marsh by local birder Paul Minvalla. A discussion occurred and the bird was noted as a likely juvenile Striated Heron Butorides striata. As the bird had not been recorded in Cyprus before, the site was visited on 27

th October and its ID was

confirmed. During the day it was discovered that Paul Curry had also seen the heron on 25th

October but had been unsure of its ID. It later transpired that the individual had been present since 23

rd October when Marios Phillipou had seen it and also photographed it. The bird was then

the subject of many visits to the area and was photographed and enjoyed by many local and visiting birders. At the time of writing, 20

th November, it is still present, often being found in the

rather unattractive pump station.

Cyprus’ first Striated Heron Butorides striata brevipes first seen 23rd

October 2014 at Zakaki

Marsh. Photograph by Marios Philippou.

The Striated Heron is a close relative of the American Green-backed Heron and is also known as Little Heron or Mangrove Heron. Many sub-species exist and the bird found in Cyprus is from the brevipes classification which according to the Collins Bird Guide (2

nd edition) breeds only in South

Sinai in the Western Palearctic. They note that it is a rare visitor to Eilat. It appears that in recent years it has extended its breeding range. The first record of its breeding in Eilat in Israel was in 2002. (Sandgrouse 24:2 pages 134-5 2002). Due to the fact the Cyprus bird was found near to Limassol Port there has been discussion as to whether it could have arrived on a ship. This is difficult to prove or disprove and although not a migratory species in the past individual Striated Herons have proved opportunistic and its close relative the Green-backed Heron has occurred in Europe.

GULLS IN CYPRUS Jane Stylianou

The second of several articles looking at the larger gulls that occur in Cyprus, continuing with the Armenian Gull Larus armenicus. Armenian Gull Larus armenicus The Armenian Gull is closely related genetically to the Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis. The recently pubished Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World (Vol 1) (HBW and BirdLife International) notes on p462 : “Formerly treated as a subspecies under an expanded L.argentatus and more recently as a subspecies of L.michahellis, but species status already recognised in HBW, suggested by very dark marking near tip of breeding bill; noted shorter bill (based on published measurements….); darker iris….; darker mantle…; and narrow zone of hybridisation with L.michahellis in C Anatolia….” (Their references are omitted). The Collins Bird Guide (second edition) note that it treats it as a full species as does Klaus Malling Olsen in his ‘Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America. Armenian Gulls breed on lakes in mountainous areas in Armenia, Turkey and Iran. Olsen states that 98% of the entire population are restricted to four main colonies. They winter mainly in the east Mediterranean with the largest numbers in north Israel. It is estimated that 60000 winter along the Mediterranean coast of Israel (Olsen). In 1992 when the Birds of Cyprus by P.Flint and P.Stewart was published the Armenian Gull was still considered as a subspecies of Herring Gull L.argentatus and they make reference to just a couple of sightings of the Armenian Gull. It is currently noted as a regular winter visitor between October and March in relatively small numbers. The most reliable locations to see them are Lady’s Mile and Larnaca Sewage Works where twenty plus individuals can be seen most winters with others seen at the nearby Akrotiri and Larnaca Salt Lakes, Spiros Pool and Larnaca and Oroklini sea fronts. Like the Yellow-legged Gull, the Armenian Gull is one of the species of gulls that has four age groups each with its different plumage. According to the Collins Bird Guide 2

nd Edition, all the

large white gulls have four age groups and adult plumage is acquired at just over three years of age. The four recognizable age groups for are first year (ie juvenile, 1

st winter or 1

st summer);

second year (ie 2nd

winter or 2nd

summer); third year (3rd

winter or 3rd

summer) and adult (adult winter and breeding). Between July and September five age-groups can be recognised when the recently fledged juvenile is added. Adult Armenian Gulls are slightly smaller than Yellow-legged Gulls. Their upperparts are a darker grey and they have a shorter bill which appears stubby in comparison to that of the Yellow-legged Gull. Its head is more rounded and it does not have a flattish crown. In breeding plumage they have a white head, bright yellow legs and a bright yellow bill. The black on the wing tips extends further than on the Yellow-legged gull onto the outer 3

rd or 4

th primary coverts and there is usually

a white ‘mirror’ on P(primary) 10 alone. The bill has a prominent red gonys spot with black markings and an ivory tip which makes it four-coloured. Occasionally the black sub-terminal band can obscure the red spot throughout the year and not just in autumn/winter plumage. The iris is usually dark. A photograph of an Armenian Gull taken in April can be found here: http://www.gull-research.org/armenicus/5cy/5cyapr02.html (The website of the Gull Research Organsation is a wonderful resource with photos of most of the regions gulls displaying typical plumages for all ages for each month of the year. The links in this article refer to photographs found on that website). Adult Armenian Gulls in Cyprus at present will resemble photograph a). This was taken in December 2011. The head has brown streaking which is absent from the summer plumage and the black band on the bill obscures the red spot.

At this time of year birds fledged in the summer of 2014 will have moulted out of their juvenile plumage. Juvenile birds are paler than Yellow-legged juveniles but generally have coarser dark head streaks and paler upper parts. They will moult out of this plumage by September and are not usually seen in Cyprus. A photograph of a September juvenile can be found here for information http://www.gull-research.org/armenicus/1cy/1cysept06.html First winter Armenian Gulls can be picked out by what most sources call their ‘gentle look’ as well as their small size and short blunt tipped bill. The markings on their backs appear a brownish black and their head, breast and flanks are often more heavily streaked. http://www.gull-research.org/armenicus/1cy/1cydec03.html As winter progresses these parts become whitish and the dark neck streaks that remain are striking. From mid winter the bill develops a pale base. The mantle and scapulars become grey with what Olsen calls ‘fine anchor shaped markings or bars’. By March the birds are much paler and their coverts often look ‘bleached’. This can be seen in photograph b). This bird was photographed in March in Cyprus. Second winter Armenian Gulls are paler than first winter and appear to have a grey saddle. http://www.gull-research.org/armenicus/2cy/2cydec02.html By December they begin to have more adult looking coverts and their underwing is almost unpatterned white as is the head and underbody. The grey median coverts contrast with the lesser and greater coverts which are still brown and patterned. The legs start to become yellowish at this stage. By their third summer the birds are similar to the adult with an extensive dark wing tip on which the adult’s P10 mirror is not clear. The tail of the third summer bird also has indistinct dark markings. http://www.gull-research.org/armenicus/3cy/3cyjul01.html References: Collins Bird Guide 2

A WALK AROUND AKOURDALEIA (with two hidden gems!) Ray Atkinson

This is a circular walk, starting at Kato (lower) Akourdaleia and climbing to Pano (higher) Akourdaleia, and then back to Kato again. There is a fairly steep climb at one point, but it is well worth it for the views. It usually brings a good selection of birds, especially raptors such as Sparrowhawk, Bonelli's Eagle and Long-legged Buzzard.

Left: Bonelli’s Eagle. Right: Long-legged Buzzard. Photographs by Ray Atkinson Take the B7 road out of Paphos, and after passing through Giolou, look for the left turn signposted to Akourdaleia. Park beside the little church. The walk is on good tracks and quiet roads all the way, but walking boots are recommended, and as ever, take water, a hat and sunscreen. The route can be found on Wikilocs at: www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=3702586 from where it can be printed or downloaded. Take a copy with you. 100m on from the church is a signpost to the 6

th century church of St Paraskevi, which is a 20

minutes’ walk away. This the first hidden gem. It's a beautiful little church, at the bottom of the gorge, that is always open to look inside, light a candle and admire the icons. From here you can scan the gorge for raptors. There are Rock Dove here too. The birds all show the right markings, the terrain is right and there aren't feral pigeons among them, so I feel confident that Rock Dove is the correct call. From the church it is a steady climb for 20 minutes. Keep stopping and checking the scrub for warblers, shrikes and wheatears, all of which are usually to be found. On reaching the top, it is a gentle stroll into the village of Pano Akourdaleia. Turn left at the T junction and it's about a hundred metres to the second hidden gem – The Herb Garden. Stop here for a well-deserved coffee or freshly made cordial, and don't try to resist the lemon and almond cake! You can enjoy the smells of the different herbs while you look round the garden, and there are lots of natural product you can buy too. The first Sunday of each month there is also a busy Farmer's Market to explore. ( http://www.heavenonearthherbals.com/ ) You have two options on leaving here. The main road takes you straight down to Kato Akourdaleia and your car, or carry on with the walk, which now takes you out into open scrub, and more good bird watching. Look out for the more colourful birds here, as I've seen Bee-eaters,

Page 22: The Monthly Checklist - BirdLife Cyprus...Saturday 28 th February: Asprokremmos Dam and Mandria Leader: Colin Richardson. Home Tel: 26946682 Winter visitors and early spring migrants

Rollers, Hoopoes, Golden Orioles, Cretzschmar's Bunting, Woodchat Shrike and many more on this stretch. This is a walk that I love doing, not just for the birdwatching. You'll need a reasonable degree of fitness to get up the hill, but it's well worth the effort. If you're heading back towards Paphos afterwards, then why not take the other way, via Kathikas, which is always good for buzzards and eagles, and also for wineries!

LOOKING BACK AT DECEMBER 2009

Jane Stylianou

A look at the birds that were seen on Cyprus this time of year in the past. This month looking back

at December 2009

The start of December 2009 saw the discovery of an American vagrant – Baird’s Sandpiper at Lady’s Mile. First seen on 2nd

December, it stayed until 5th and was probably the bird of the year.

Otherwise the month had a good scattering of more interesting winter birds. A Merlin found at

Coral Bay, Paphos on 2nd

was the most notable raptor while a Great Black-headed Gull at

Larnaca Salt Lake on 12th and 15

th and two immature Common Gull at Lady’s Mile on 30th

were

the gull highlights.

Single Pied Kingfishers were seen at Lady’s Mile on 7th, Mavrokolympos Dam on 11

th and

Asprokremmos Dam on 20th. Two Redwings were at Argaka on 6

th with a Brambling at

Stavrovouni the next day. Ten European Siskin were in the Ezousas Vally near Episkopi on 9th

and three Hawfinch were seen in Armou, Paphos on 21st. Akhna Dam was a great spot to visit for

Bluethroat throughout the month with four there on 9th December and six on 17

th. An unseasonal

finding was an immature Corncrake at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 23rd

December.

MONTHLY WATERBIRD COUNT October 2014 Martin Hellicar

The BirdLife Cyprus waterbirds monitoring programme has been running since 2005 and covers around 60 wetlands and other waterbird sites around the island. All sites are covered at least every January (mid-winter count) and every May (breeding season count), while the more important sites are also covered in March, September and November. Key Important Bird Area (IBA) wetlands such as the island’s two salt lakes, which attract large numbers of birds, are covered on a monthly basis. The monitoring programme is based on the voluntary work of a team of dedicated and experienced recorders and preliminary results are presented in the Monthly Checklist. A total of 31 sites were covered in October 2014, with 5,217 birds of 49 different species counted. The Mia Milia Sewage works IBA was the richest October site, with a total of 1,842 birds of 15 species and Coot, Moorhen, Northern Shoveler, Mallard, EurasianTeal and Little Grebe the most numerous. Agia Eirini dam was also notable, with 1,376 birds of 18 species recorded, including impressive numbers of Common Pochard and Ferruginous Duck as well as the more common Coot and Little Grebe. Coot, Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Teal and Little Grebe were the most abundant October wetland species overall.
