NORTH OLD BOYS RESUME "A" CHARG ELA TROBE TOPPLE "E" LEADER

By JAN HOWARD

Last week's round was basically one of percentage-boosting for the winner s, with mostgames providhtg decisive results

. Most advantage was taken by Reserves ft eams Beverley HillsF. i and Oid Melburnians (B) who both managed to keep their opposition scoreless .

The tightest game in A Section was thatbetween Caulfield Grammarians and Ormond .Caulfield emerged victorious by ten points. Butthe margin might just as well have been tenuuals for the effect that the loss had onUrmond's aspirations . And that three goalsnine in the last quarter would have donenothing for the confidence of Ormond's for-« :,rds . After trailing at half-time, De LaSalle came home strongly to win by five goalsover Marcellin and so move up to third placeu^ain . The team in the "hot spot" currentlyis Old Scotch after their eight goal defeat atthe hands of Ivanhoe last week . Ivanhoe, after.i severe mid-season slump, have returned with~t vengeance and are now second. North OldBills resumed their forward thrust with atimely eight goal victory over Section leaderCnhersity Blues. North led convincingly alldan and are ~ now only one game out of thefour . St. Bernard's moved off the bottomagain and put University Blacks back there«hen the Saints won their clash by three_oals .

In B Section, Old Melbnrnians returnedstrongly to defeat Coburg by sixteen goals, after leading by sixty-four points at quarter-Lime . Old Paradians tighten their grasp onthe second spot with yet another good win -this time over Fawkner, who trailed all day. After being fourteen points down at half-time,Old Trinity ran all over Collegians to win bylift, points . Trinity kicked thirteen goals sevento Collegians three-three in the second half ofthe match . Parkside, again, nearly let thepoints slip away with an inaccurate lastquarter in their game with Monash Blues, whoput up a valiant effort in scoring six-one inthe last term - but they still failed to bridgethe gap .

ofCtheefieid after their Adefeat oof KewmandlSt .Kilda's loss to Hampton Rovers . A.J.A.X .led Kew all day to record their nine goal winwhilst St. Kilda trailed by three points at the, tiig interval - having led by eight at the first .Hampton proved too good thereafter and wonhy fourteen points - undoubtedly assisted byset another fine display of goal-scoring:ccuracy. Alphington's twenty-two point winover Old Carey enabled them to retain fourthplace but they must keep winning - onlypercentage separates them from Old Xaverians .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 15, 1978

Geelong consolidated in third place - andare now looking at second - with their winover Old Brighton in a low and inaccuratescoring game . Old Xaverians remained incontention and gave their lowly percentage aboost when they defeated Old Iv

anhoe by

seventy-six points .St. Kevin's, in D Section, played the game

right out last week against Heatlterton whenthey won by twenty-seven points after leadingby only three at the last change . MelbourneHigh proved too strong for West Brunswickafter half-time and scored by thirty-nine points .University High were led comfortably by StateBank all day and the Bankers eighty-six pointwin sees them back in the four - at theexpense of M .H.S .O .B. Inaccuracy was thekey-note again for Country . Coll eges in theirseven goal win over Elsternwick, though their

Power House regained the of ban now.

top spote and agame break when they accounted for aslumping Old Camberwe ll by sixteen points .

The E Section coup was delivered by LaTrobe Blacks when they toppled previousleader St. Bede's by three goals. The Blacksare still fifth on percentage but in with adefinite chance . Balleea-Templestowe regainedthe top position when they defeated NorthBrunswick by fifty points. Old Geelong scrapedhome by four points to retain fourth spot aftera closely fought tussle with Old Mentonlans .Beverley Hills' ninety-four point win overBrunswick sees them now firmly ensconced inthird place - a game clear . A.M.P. kept theirslim finals hopes alive when they defeatedA.N.Z . Bank by twenty-seven points .

In F Section, Thornbury retained the topposition when they led Clayton all day toscore by one hundred and four points, thusending Clayton's recent run of wins . BulleenUnited's seventy point victory over UniversityReds sees them holding second spot by twopoints from Commonwealth Bank who, also, scored handsomely over the opposition Bank- National. Therry won well over MonasbWhites after a slow start to consolidate theirfourth place and it is now difficult toenvisage any change in this top four.North Old Boys in Junior One continued

their winning sequence - at the expense ofUniversity Blacks last week. Old Scotch and

Ivanhoe changed places when Scotch won their"see-sawing" struggle by six points ; whilstOrmond kept their hopes alive when they de-feated University Blues by four points .Moorish also still have a slim chance of mak-ing it following their forty-five voint win overHampton Rovers. St . Bernard s forty pointdefeat of Geelong now .sees them a game clearof the relegation zone.

In Junior Two, De La Salle slipped fromfirst to third when they were overrun byCoburg in the last quarter, The win putsCoburg on top - three percent ahead of Kewwho won well over Caulfield - by eighteengoals. Old HaBeybury's five goal win overOld Paradises now gives them a three gamebreak over that team in fourth place . In theother games Fawkner scored by thirty-fourpoints over Therry and M .H .S .O.B . led WestBrunswick all day to record a sixty-three pointvictory .

A MANACER REFLECT SIt was the morning after the Interstate

games at Elsternwick Park' on' June 4th . Iknew by the size of my headache it had beena great day and night.

My first thought was "thank goodness that'sover" . It had been many months of planningand hard work but the two great wins by ourVictorian teams had made it all worth while .

As I reflected back to the number ofpeople and clubs who had contributed, Irealised what a truly V .A .F.A. day it had been .

It started for me two years ago at the 1976A .A .F .C. Carnival in Adelaide . As manager ofthe Victorian team I had to stand by and watchour State side being defeated by the SouthAustralians . The loss filled me with a sense ofanger .

This must not happen again - but whatcould we do about it ?

Where could we improve ourselves ?I sat through several unofficial meetings with

coach Peter O'Donohue and selector DonMcQueen. From these discussions a plan wasformed that we hoped would enable us to winnext year's Carnival series in Hobart .

Our thoughts were presented to the Execu-tive Committee and they endorsed most ofthem .

The first step was the appointment of apermanent State coach . The thought was that aState coach without club ties would have afar better chance of viewing players on thefield each week and knowing exactly what typeof footballers were available .

Peter O'Donohue sacrificed his position asCoach of the University Blacks, to accept theappointment as State coach .

The next step was the appointment of aSelection Committee that could actively supportthe Victorian coach . These men would be re-quired to view at least two games each week, which meant that between them the selectionpanel would see over 400 -players in actionevery Saturday . The men chosen to fill thisdemanding role this season were Don McQueen(Chairman) from Old Haileybury, "Jack" Clancy(North Old Boys), "Jocka" Nelson (M .H.S .O .B .)and "Bill" Brown (Coburg) . Bernie Sheehy, whois Coach of the De La Salle club, was chosenas Assistant to Peter O'Donohue . This appoint-ment proved a stroke of genius. He capturedour imagination with his knowledge and en-thusiasm .

Page 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 15,

Here we had a group who not only knewfootball, but also understood footballers .

I sat through their first major selectionmeeting which started one Friday evening at6 .45 p .m . and concluded at midnight. I wasamazed at the depth of their thinking andknowledge of individual players . I understandthat each selector sat through over 40 hours ofdiscussions before the final teams were chosen .

The South Australian Amateur FootballLeague had impressed me with the way theyutilised the facilities and resources of theirmember clubs when they played host. Thispolicy was adopted by us and it proved awinner.

The next important step was the appoint-ment of the V .A.F.A . Social Committee as themain back-up group to the selectors.

Members of the Social Committee werepresent at all training nights, Suriday workoutsand practice matches of the Victorian squad.

,Their role was to provide food, refreshments, barbecues etc . The thought being this wouldenable players to meet socially, get to knoweach other better and promote the thought ofVictorian selection .

The Caulfield Grammarians ground waschosen as our mid-week training venue . TheCaulfield club responded magnificently . Theyensured food and refreshments were availableeach night. I know some of these nights be-came quite lengthy.

On the odd night the Caulfield ground wasunavailable the State Bank club allowed us touse their excellent ground and clubrooms -complete with refreshments .

At this stage the Social Committee washolding 7 a .m . breakfast meetings at theR.A .C.V . club. It was decided to ask the PowerHouse club to act as hosts and caterers to thefour teams and their supporters after thingsended at Elsternwick Park .

The Power House club was delighted to,accept. This meant five meetings with SteveMason (Power House Secretary) working outdetails for the night .

The Executive had appointed a committeeheaded by John Adams (North Old Boys) andJohn Miles (Ivanhoe) to manage arrangementsfor the big day .

They invited the Ivanhoe Club to act ascaterers at Elsternwick Park .

1978

I have never seen two functions handled sowell . The two clubs were quite Incredible .

Ivanhoe left no stone unturned to make thisday a success . A refrigerated van to keeprefreshments cold and three large spits withsides of beef roasting were just a couple ofthe highlights . The layout and presentation ofthe luncheon in the rooms was perfect. Afterthe game they catered for a crowd whichpacked the rooms .

Then it was back to the huge Power Housecomplex on Albert Park Lake . The night justhad to be the finest night we have ever pre-'sented our visitors after an interstate match .

As I walked into the upstairs dining roomfor our evening meal and presentations, 1could not help but feel proud to be part of thescene. The room looked magnificent. After-wards we journeyed downstairs to a DiscoNight which just topped off a wonderful day .I am sure our visitors were delighted with ourVictorian hospitality.

The two clubs must have put hours of hardwork Into these functions .

That last week had been quite hectic . OurSocial Secretary, Mr. Clarrie Middling (Coburg),had arranged a night at the Masonic Club forall players to enjoy a dinner and refreshments .At this dinner the jumpers were presentedto the lucky players who made the final teams .

The Executive Committee, by this stage ,were totally Involved. Apart from attendingtraining sessions, they were at the airport togreet our visitors . Courtesy cars were madeavailable to the visiting team managers . On theFriday night a dinner was held at the Kooyong

CiuSaturdaylcmorning r invol ed oatcimeeting ofall States participating in the games . This wasfollowed by a meeting of A .A.F.C . officials anddelegates present. This wa sN.M.F.C. , held at the

Tickets were made available for playersand officials to attend V.F.L . matches or therace meeting .

In the evening the Coburg Club had a largetable reserved at their Club Ball for the use ofany officials who wished to attend. This washeld at the Collingwood Social Club .

On the Sunday the De La Salle and Uni-versity Clubs supplied officials and trainers tohandle match arrangements .

The Coburg and Parkside Clubs had trainersavailable-who assisted the players.

More and more he clubs were respondingand playing a vital role in making the day sucha success .

So much hard work was being shared byso many ctubs .

It was a proud day for the V .A.F.A .Perhaps the best way to illustrate this

would be to list the clubs, whose memberstook part in our success :

A .N .Z . Bank, Caulfield Grammarians, Coburg,De LaSalle, Elsternwick, Hampton Rovers,Ivanhoe, M .H .S.O .B ., North Old Boys, OldHaiteybury, Old Paradlans, Parkside, PowerHouse, State Bank, St . Bernard's, UniversityClubs .

To these clubs we owe a sincere vote ofthanks . We must have taken up so muchprecious time of your members. They workedso hard ,for us and still had to fulfil yourclub's commitments.

This list does not necessarily include theclubs whose players trained so hard and per-formed so well for Victoria .

Did I say it was all over? The selectors are still viewing games and

are already lining up a squad to represent usIn the tough Carnival Series at Hobart nextyear .

Oh well, here we go againlltBRIAN LAUDER

PREVIEWING TODAYS GAMESA SECTIO N

What a round of upsets! Last week's resultswere-the most topsy-turvy of the entire seasonand have thrown the whole competition into astate of flux. The top side, Uni . Blues, wasdecisively beaten by North Old Boys and OldScotch dropped from second to fourth after ahiding by Ivanhoe.

To further confuse your Tipster, CaulfieldGrammarians accounted for Ormond, who, upto a couple of weeks ago, looked certaintiesto get into the Four.

St . Bernard's O .C . climbed off the bottomof the ladder with a three goal win over Uni .Blacks whilst De La Salle consolidated theirposition in the Four by containing Marcellin.

It just serves to illustrate what was saidlast week - that no team in the Four canafford to rest on their laurels .

It was interesting to note that four out ofthe five winning teams were playing on theirhome grounds, which would indicate that thehome ground advantages are-vital at this stageof the year .

The team that seems to be on the skids atthe present time amongst the leaders is OldScotch, who have only won one game in thelast four . Their position in the Four is verytenuous and they have North O .B . breathingdown their necks .

The big improvers in the competition atthe moment are Caulfield Grammarians, who, only a few weeks ago, were in dire danger ofrelegation but who are now well within strikingdistance of the Four on present form indica-tions.

This round produces the game betweenUni . Blues and Ivanhoe, the two top teams atpresent. Ivanhoe were in freat form against OldScotch with fine contributions from Simpson,Sheppard, Jones and Robert son . Ivanhoe, whohave a relatively poor percentage, realise thatif they lose this game their position in secondspot is like!y to be taken over . Uni . Blues, aftera very humiliating defeat by North MelbourneO .B., will be anxious to regain some lostprestige and prevent themselves from fallinginto a slide . They will have the advantage ofthe home ground on this occasion and I fancythat Coach Salter will have read the riot actto his players during the week .

I am tipping Uni. Blues to defeat Ivanhoein what should be a close and exciting game .

St. Be rn ard's O .C. meet Do La Salle O .C. atthe Saints home ground. Last time these twoteams met, St. Bernard's scored a surprisevictory over their rivals . The Saints have beenheartened by Mick Mahoney who kicked sixgoals last week and are hoping that he can

-maintain some consistent form . De La Salle,on the other hand, have Groves and Beddoein good form and, know that they must keepwinning to secure their position near the topof the ladder. I believe that De La Salle willbe too experienced and will defeat St.Bernard' s

Old Scotch Collegians meet Uni . Blacks atOld Scotch . Old Scotch, if not desperate

before, would have to be doubly so at thisstage . They realise that they cannot affordanother loss and they meet Uni. Blacks whoknow they must keep winning to avoid rele-gation . I am relying on Old Scotch's strength, particularly in the ruck and marking divisions,to give them the points over Uni . Blacks in thismatch .

Another good game is that between , Ormondand Nort h O .B. North has struck great formand their forwards, if not put under greatpressure, consistently win games for them .O'Connor is equal leading goalkicker for theyear and will have to be contained by Ormondif the home side hope to win . Ormond hassuffered a slight slump in form and must winthis game to keep in touch with the con-tenders for the Final Four . However, despitetheir home ground advantage, I cannot seethem defeating North O.B . who have staged agreat second half revival .

Marcellin O.C . meet Caulfield Grammariansat Marceiifn in what must be a do or diegame for Marcellin In order for them to avoi d.relegation . Cummings, Grego ry and Gartnershowed great form for Marceilin last weekagainst De La Salle . On the other hand, Caul-field Grammarians are the improvers at thisstage of the season and will be equally deter-mined to keep up their winning run . Goodform is being shown by Fletcher, Tootell andLong for Caulfield and I feel their goal-kickingpower will give them sufficient drive to defeatMarcellin.

I am tipping for this round, De La Salle,Old Scotch, Uni. Blues, Nort h Old Boys andCaulfield Grammarians - MICHAEL ARNOLD .

B SECTIO NOne slip and you are out . Collegians found

this to be true after failing against Old Trinitylast week.

Billy Peers tried to tell me this was on butI was too thick to listen . That's two good winsin a`row for the Old Trinity boys .

Today's big match will be Collegians athome taking on Old Melburnians. Collegianswill be desperate for a win to recover theirspot in the Four. Old Melburnians played asexpected for a big win over Coburg . I thinkthe Collegians have a touch of the wobblesat the moment and even on their own groundthey Will be In trouble against the top team .

It's Old Melburnians for my money. Theyshould prove too big and strong .

Coburg meet their neighbours, Fawkner, atthe De Cherie Reserve. The home team Will -find Fawkner in a mean mood after their lossto Old Paradians last week.

The Coburg team is in a spot of botherat the moment and would have to show amassive Improvement in their game to troubleFawkner. I know anything can happen in foot.ball -but I can't see Fawkner losing this one .

Old Haileybury, who have slipped back Intothe Four, take on the danger side, Old Trinity,at Keysborough. This will be a very interestinggame to see . Hai!eybury will apply a ton of

Page 6 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 15, 1970,

pressure to the fast improving Old Trinity . Iwatched Haileybury two weeks back and theyplayed the game right out . Good rucks, astrong centre line and some big grabs in frontof goal make them hard to beat .. 0!d Trinity have hit their straps at the righttime and are poised for a big climb up theladder .

I have to make a choice so I'll go for thehome side, Haileybury, to run out winners inwhat should be a great game .

Old Paradians continued on their winningway with a good win over Fawkner lastSaturday .` Today they play host to Monash Blues at

Bundoora. paradfans will be trying for theirsixth win in a row and will be hard to beat .Monash lost to Parkside at the Uni . last week .They would have to show a complete reversalof form to win this one.

Paradians' confidence must be sky high andrightly so . I don't believe they will let this oneslip away from them . It should be a good winfor Old Paradians.

Parkside chalked up their first win awayfrom home last week and today have the bye. They are taking the opportunity to have a re-match with Bulleen United . The last time theseteams met "F" troopers Bulleen proved toostrong for Parkside . The "Bulls" have doneeverything right since then so it should be agood work-out for both clubs .

Selections : Old • Melbumians, Fawkner, OldHaileyburians, Old Paradians - BRIAN LAUDER .

C SECTIONThose upsets are still occurring In C Section

- this time it was Hampton Rovers topplingSt. Kilda . That Is the second time Hamptonhave "surprized" and they are determined toavoid relegation and keep alive any Final Fourchances .

St. Kilda have now lost three games inquick succession and may be having a slump .Today they strike Afphington, who will be easierfor St . Kilda on its home ground than I en-visage would be the case if it were at Alph!ng-ton .

Alphington struggled to eclipse Old Careylast week - they appear to rely too much onproven stars Bromley and Candy.I I St. Kilda's all-round strength should enableit to halt Its slide and retain its grip on secondplace .

Geelong slithered it way to an Inaccurate, but handy, twenty-five point win over OldBrighton last week. It is the most determinedGeelong side I can recall and must continueto improve that percentage if it is to stay Inthe race for the coveted double chance . Iexpect that Geelong's form will enable them towin well over Old Ivanhoe today - my biasnaturally expects that the win will boost itspercentage past the rating of St . Kilda

last week that It was able to test A.J .A.X. andIt may be in similar mood today .

Old Brighton and Hampton Rovers - thisis a Puzzle! Every week I select againstHampton, they make me eat my words. I haveseen both teams play during the past threeweeks - I consider Old Brighton the bettercombination . Perhaps they are a "dry-day"outfit. But, I believe their biggest trouble atthe moment is that they have forgotten thewinning formula.

I cannotreseetHtha

t ampton formul

a holding return

Brighton today.

Warnock, Priestley and Jones for the entiregame at Brighton Beach .

This is the closest A.J.A.X. have everbeen to B Section - one game clear on topof C Section . They are definitely the teamdeserving of "ladder leader", but there are afew "ifs" before I back them all the way, forthe Grand Final . However, I can't see thems!ipping, against Old Carey at Bulleen today.Selections : St. Kilda C .B.C .O .C., GeelongOid Xaverians, Oid Brighton Grammarfans,,A .J.A .X . - JIM FIDGE.

Thank you to the home sides who promptlyphoned their scores last Saturday. it doesmake all our duties easier. Will the other fivesides please phone today ?

Selections : State Bank, Count ry Colleges,Heathert on, St . Kevin's, Power House - NORMNUGENT.

E SECTIONThe Editor pointed out that La Trobe Blacks

were the slow beginners, but they have provedthey are a side to be considered, being thesecond only side to toss St . Bede's.

Bulleen-Templestowe will now become No .1 and the battle of percentages as well aswinning for Old Geelong, A.M .P ., La TrobeBlacks to see which will hold the fourthposition under Beverley Hills .

Two of the contenders, Old Geelong andLa Trobe Blacks, meet at Como today. OldGeelong had a very narrow victory last Satur-day at Mentone . They possibly would have wonby a bigger margin but they could not handlethe heavy going as well as the local boys:Como is in good condition and I feel OldGeelong have made up their mind about theFour and will just get the points from La TrobeBlacks.

No rt h Brunswick have played some goodgames at home and they are determined tostay away from the two bottom positions, sothey will . be all out for a victory againstBeverley Hills. I know the Hills boys will beout to prove me wrong, when I tip NorthBrunswick by a smail margin .

A .N .Z . - you have copped the top side -Bulleen-Templestowe - and they will be all outto hold this spot ; so it could be a case of howmuch they get home by. -

The coach at St. Bede's will be .putting onan, extra, training night this week after fallingvictims to La Trobe Blacks and losing theirtop position . Perhaps it took a lot out of St.Bede's to give Old Geelong the thrashing theweek before . They won't want to treat A .M.P.too lightly, but I feel they will win .

Old Mentonians have had a run of outs forthe last four weeks and will be looking for-ward to this week to get back on the winninglist at Brunswic k

Brunswick, although only getting the pointsfor one win this season, have been playingthe game right out against their victors, so anylet up on the part of Old Mentonians could befatal.

Selections: North Brunswick, Bulieen-Templestowe, St. Bede's, Old Geelong, OldMentonians - NUGGET STEPHENS .

One of the pleasures of participating inthis tipping lurk is to pick one's winners onSunday afternoon and then get all the resultsin Monday's paper . So perhaps Norm Nugent'sproblem is not knowing match results but thepossibility that his pen takes over. He wouldhave to start his notes immediately after break-fast and write all day to fill more than half apage .

Monash Whites at home to the Fitites whoare a remote Final Four prospect, but possessthe leading goalkicker in this section . Fititesto win this .

National Bank are at home to Therry C .C .,but the home ground advantage won't besufficient to hold off the Therry team .

Thornbury play Commonwealth Bank athome and unless the Bankers have restrictedtheir training to the cricket pitch area, theywill not enjoy playing on Cain Reserve. (Theyshould be thankful that they aren't in B sectionand have to play on Pitcher Park .) Thornburyshould be too good .

Uni . Reds take on Clayton at Royal Parkand have a golden opportunity to move up theladder like the proverbial rocket . Up Reds andat 'em !

Selections : Fitites, Therry C .C ., Thornbury,Uni. Reds, and I beiieve that Bulleen Unitedare having a game with Parkside, so goodluck - SYD WHITFIELD.

JUNIOR 1 SECTION

A couple of surprises last week, have addedinterest to the Section . Ormond won a closeone against,Blues to stay in contention, whileMonash had a good win at home againstHamptqn Rovers to be knocking on the door ofthe Four also . The big surprise was the endof Ivanhoe's winning run . Old Scotch had towin to ward off its challengers for fourth placeand answered the challenge well .

So now the position is that only unbeatenNorth Old Boys are assured of a place in thefinals. Blues, Old Scotch and Ivanhoe have aone game break over Ormond and Monash, but the situation could well change aftertoday's round.

Match of the day sees No rth at home toIvanhoe. This will be North's hardest game ofthe year . Ivanhoe's form before last week wasfaultless and I'm prepared to disregard theirdisappointing effort last week . Perhaps theearly morning start ~ did not agree with them .North have high hopes of a Championship thisyear, but I have a feeling Ivanhoe will putan end to that dream today .

Old Scotch consolidated their position inthe Four last week and today face winlessGeelong . As percentage is likely to decide thetop few positions, the Scotch boys will , bekeen to - match the Blues mammoth scoreagainst Geelong a couple of weeks ago . Abig win for Scotch .

St . Bernard's returned to the winning listlast week, but I feel their joy will be short-

lived . Ormond started magnificently againstBiues, and hung on determinantiy for a win .They will also be after percentage and shouldhave a good win .

Harppton Rovers are at home to Uni.~ Blacks. The , Rovers were unsuccessful at Monash lastweek and are now in no-man's land with nochance of making the Four while seeminglysafe from the worry of relegation . Blacks, onthe "other hand, are desperately trying to avoidthe drop to Section 2 for 1979 . They need awin, but I think Rovers will be too strong .

Monash pulled off a surprise win againstUni . Blues earlier in the season and will bekeen to repeat the dose again today. Theyseem to play well on their home ground, butstruggle away from home. Blues got off to adisastrous start last week and will need tobe on the ball right from the first bouncetoday . Coach Bob Girdwood tells me that histeam have the Potential to win a Premiership, but they are certainly not playing like winnersat the moment . Nevertheless I think they canwin today.

Today's winners : Ivanhoe, Old Scotch,Ormond, Hampton Rovers and Uni . Blues -PETER BRUKNER .

JUNIOR 2 SECTIO NThe business part of the season is com-

mencing and I have had to lower my coloursto "Gentleman Jim" and "Nostalgic Norm".Nevertheless, after having waited all last Sun-day to see "Anonymous Arnold" on WOS Ifound suffifficient time to study the form g4ideand pick out five winners that will close thegap on "Wisdom Whitfield" .

Having been unsuccessful in selectingTherry C.C .O .B . for the last 3 weeks I amfinally going against them even though the y

150 UP TO A .M .P . RUCKMANAnother memorable achievement at A.M .P .

John "Tits" Moor this week brings up number150 . John commenced with the club in 1967and apart .from "missing one season, has beenaround ever since . Most of his football hasbeen as a knock-ruckman for the Reserves, but being one of our tireless administrators, his Saturday rarely ends prior to 5 p .m . Johnhas shown great courage to come back thisyear after being hospitalized and fully deservesthe plaudits of the club and its supporters . Weall wish you well for today, "Moory", and knowthat you will turn it on for the club for fourquarters and round off a big day for you .

HAILEYBURY STALWART'S 150A one-time captain and great stalwart of

Old Haileyburians, Peter Mason, will play his150th, game today. In -reaching this milestonehe has, made as many comebacks as Melba. He played only four games last year when hesuffered a serious injury, after which heannounced his retirement . He played one gameearly this season, and promptly retired again! However, such was his keenness (or possiblyour shortage of good players) that he has madeYet another come-back. Let's hope that, with

are at home . 'Coburg accounted for De La by2 goals 17 points last week and a little moreaccuracy this week should, assist them inaccounting for Therry.

De La Salle O .C. have dropped from thetop of the ladder and will be hard pressed to"account for Old Paradians at home . The visitorsare three games plus percentage outside theFour, with six games to go and I feel theymissed their chance last week against OldHaiieyburians . However, De La have some oftheir players in the Seniors and some " areaway on holiday. Nevertheless, if Paradecannot win at home it is hard to see themwinning away.

Old Haiieyburians will be eagerly awaitingthe arrival of M .H .S . Old Boys as they see thisgame as a percentage builder . Haileybury haveCollins and, Lynch moving well on the forwardline and will be looking for a"bagfut" fromeach of these players. Although M .H .S. havewon two out of the last three I cannot seeany great improvement today .

There should be a very interesting game atAlbert Park between Caulfield Grammariansand Fawkner. The visitors won the first en-counter but the home side has the better trackrecord with wins over the likes of Old Paradiansand Kew . Caulfield are four games plus per-centage outside the Four with six games to goand must-win to keep alivetheir slim chanceof making the Finals.

The remaining game in this Section seesKew travel to West Brunswick in what shapesas a lack-lustre game . Kew will have notrouble in building up their percentage whichhas been the poorest of the top division .

Selections : Coburg, De La Salle, Old Halley-burians, Caulfield Grammarians, - Kew - PETERNATHAN .

150 under his belt, he will keep on piayfng .fora while longer .

"Mace" has played most of his games inthe centre or at half forward, where his greatspring and safe hands have made him a mostvaluable player . He has been a prolific kick-getter, frequently gaining 30 kicks in a match .Unfortunately kicking for goal has not been hispr!ncipat attribute, although he, has notchedup 160 goals in his career. Well done, Peter- there are only another 70 to go'for the clubrecord!

' 100 TO FAWKNER'S No . 14 "

Jeff Stewart plays his 100th game for theFawkner combination when he strips into hisusual ~ No . 14 guernsey today. . Jeff has, beenwith Fawkner since its inception into theAmateurs and is a .very active social worker andone who can be readily depended upon to pullhis fair share of the weight within the -club .Not ' .renowned as a good trainer, Jeff- hasmanaged to play a fair share of his 100 gamesin the Seniors with some successes. In hiscareer at Fawkner he has been leading ;goal-kicker for the club twice and has been judgedbest player in 3 Finals series . Congratulations,Jeff, from all at "Fawkner. -

109TH THIS WEEK! !

Tim Arnold's 99th game for St . Kevin's wasplayed in great style last week with telegrams, bouquets and the works, though, fortunately,Gaven was shrewd enough not to let him leadthe team on to the field . I hope, to paraphrasethe lovely lass from Waurn Ponds, that todayis not going to be an anti-climax . Christened"Mouthwash", by "Acka" some years ago, Timis said by some to bear an almost uncanny re-semblence to Bruce Dou!l on the field. Ruggedhe is not very, but for determination, dedica-tion, enthusiasm and loyalty he has no peer.Whether in the ruck, in a key forward positionor in a key back position, Tim is a true 101-percenter, as indeed are his Mum-and Dad intheir loyal support of the club off the field .Gentlemen, the Arnolds !

COMMONWEALTH BANK CENTURYEverybody at Commonwealth Bank extend

their congratulations to George Pike, whoplayed his 100th game last week. George hastaken a long time to notch up his 100 games, and' he is a life member who has been withthe club' since 1968. Unfortunately he has beenplagued with injuries . He is a solid defenderwho clears with long kicks . We hope your next100 won't take as long! Congratulations andgood luck.

100 UP FOR RUGGED DE LA PLAYER

Everyone at De La Salle Old Collegians con-gratulates David Hale on playing his 100thgame today .

David is a typically rugged and strong DeLa player who is also one of the few to playin the Seniors, Reserves and Warriors. Althoughinjuries and Queensland holidays have inter-rupted his tally of games this year, he is nowfit and ready to go right on with it, at thebusiness end of the season .

Congratulations to Old Trinity's ChrisWilliams who played his 50th game last weekagainst Coburg. Chris first played with theclub in 1973 whilst still at school, and beganplaying regularly in 1975 after leaving school .Since then he has been a regular First player,as ruck rover and centreman . He has also

been active off the field, giving good supportto the club socially and on the committee .Chris had been O/S for a few months recently, but returned last month to puIl on his bootsonce again for the O .T .'s. Well done from allconcerned, Chris .

University Blues congratulate Robert Hindleon reaching 50 games with the "Blues" .Robert was one of the very important youngplayers who lifted the Blues back to A Sectionafter one year in B Section ; he earned a Vic-torian jumper in his first season which most, likely over-awed this fine young player, ai ssoit led critics to expect far too much of him,but he continued to contribute to the successof the team. Pressure of studies and injuriesadded to Rob's cares and together with theside's poor showing last season, saw himmoved all around the forward line, into theruck and then to the wing, where his skill puthis name in "the best" many times . Duringpre-season training this season he was anotable absentee and when his parents toldthe Club that his dental career must comefirst, we had, to agree . Rob's parents havealways shqwn a keen interest in his footballand with the new spirit abroad at the Bluesthis year it wasn't long before both Rob, hisfather and brother were back again and in hisnew defence position he is starring each matchand is an important part of the Blues revival .
