1 Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Executive Summary

With more than 7 Billion mobile network subscriptions worldwide, the mobile

communications sector is rapidly gaining traction from a diverse range of vertical

sectors. Healthcare is no exception to this trend.

As healthcare providers seek to maximize their patient outreach while minimizing

costs, many view mobile healthcare (or mHealth) as the solution to improve

healthcare cost-efficiency. mHealth refers to the usage of mobile communications

technology & devices to enhance access to healthcare information, improve

distribution of routine and emergency health services and provide diagnostic

services.

Mobile network operators also view mHealth as a lucrative opportunity for the

monetization of their mobile connectivity services. Given that most operators

have established themselves as reputable consumer brands, they are also eyeing

on opportunities to offer services beyond simple connectivity. Many operators

already offer branded or co-branded end-to-end mHealth solutions to their

customer bases.

In addition, mHealth offers a multitude to opportunities to the pharmaceutical

industry ranging from R&D activities to securing the supply chain and, in the battle

against counterfeit drugs.

2.6.7 The Cost Saving Potential of mHealth

mHealth has the potential to dramatically reduce the costs of healthcare

operations, while improving the quality of healthcare. SNS Research estimates

that by the end of 2015, mHealth could represent up to $290 Billion in annual

healthcare cost savings worldwide.

Figure 4: Cost Saving Potential of mHealth by Region: 2014 - 2020 ($ Million)

Source: SNS Research

The cost saving potential of mHealth comes from a variety of application areas.

For example, remote monitoring technologies built upon mHealth platforms can

enable patients to be monitored on an ambulatory basis when they previously

may have needed to be monitored as inpatients. Given the considerable cost of

providing inpatient services, moving some forms of observation to an outpatient

6.10 AirStrip Technologies

AirStrip Technologies develops mHealth software applications, which enable

physicians to access patient information, including waveforms and other critical

data. The company is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.

Launched in Q1’2013, the AirStrip ONE platform is a vendor-agnostic solution to

securely deliver patient data from medical devices, EMRs (Electronic Medical

Records) and patient monitors to clinicians anywhere across the healthcare

continuum.

Through strategic partnerships with the likes of Samsung, Apple and Microsoft,

AirStrip has optimized its AirStrip ONE platform to run on iOS, Android and

Windows mobile devices, laptops and desktops.

In Q1’2014, AirStrip acquired the assets of Sense4Baby, the developer of a

wireless fetal/maternal monitoring system to perform NST (Non-Stress Testing)

for high-risk pregnancies, and licensed the associated technology from the Gary

and Mary West Health Institute. The patient data from the Sense4Baby system

will be mobilized with the AirStrip ONE platform.

6.75 GSK (GlaxoSmithKline)

GSK, incorporated in 1999, is a global healthcare group engaged in the creation,

discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of pharmaceutical products,

including vaccines, OTC (Over-the-Counter) medicines and health-related

consumer products2.

GSK competes with Abbott Laboratories, Amgen, AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers

Squibb, Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Novartis, Pfizer, Roche Holdings,

Sanofi, Takeda and Teva Pharmaceuticals.

GSK has been an active player in the mHealth arena, from an early stage. In

Q2’2010, GSK made headlines when it teamed up with MedTrust Online3 to

launch CancerTrialsApp, the first free geo-locating cancer clinical trials application

for mobile devices. Supported on the iPhone and iPad, the application enables

cancer doctors to find and share with their patients, information about

experimental therapies in clinical trials.

In Q1’2012, GSK launched MyAsthma, a free personalized mHealth app designed

to help people over the age of 12 take greater control of their asthma. The app

displays localized information on asthma triggers such as pollen count, pollution

and weather. The company also maintains an active partnership with Vodafone to

provide healthcare workers with smartphones to improve record keeping and

enable better management of vaccination services in Africa.

2 GSK’s principal pharmaceutical products include medicines in therapeutic areas; respiratory, anti-virals, central

nervous system, cardiovascular and urogenital, metabolic, antibacterials, oncology and emesis, dermatology, rare diseases, immuno-inflammation, vaccines and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). 3 MedTrust Online is a US-based provider of specialist data and technology to oncologists.

6.155 Samsung

The Samsung Group is a South Korean multinational conglomerate company

headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul. Samsung Electronics, the company’s

flagship subsidiary, supplies a wide range of consumer products7 and

semiconductor devices8.

During the first half of 2014, Samsung enhanced its smartphone and smart watch

offerings with the addition of an embedded heart rate sensor, a major

differentiator from other mobile OEM rivals.

In Q2’2014, Samsung unveiled Simband, a reference design for future health

centric wearable devices. The Simband contains a modular array of sensors to

track fitness metrics such as heart rate and oxygen levels, and a snap-on battery

that can be charged without having to remove the device. Powered by a 1GHz

dual-core ARM A7 processor, the design supports WiFi and Bluetooth for wireless

connectivity.

The Simband reference design is supported by the SAMI9 platform, a cloud-based

back-end to collect and sort through the data collected by these devices and other

health sensors. From SAMI, developers can access the data and leverage it to

create new applications.

9.9 Wearable Technology: Prospects in the mHealth

Ecosystem

While most vertical segments still view wearable devices with hesitation, the

healthcare sector has embraced them, with applications ranging from consumer

healthcare/fitness monitoring to assisted patient examination, and even

healthcare cost reduction.

Units): 2014 - 2020

In fact, cost reduction is considered to be one of the major drivers for the growing

proliferation of healthcare centric wearables. Besides healthcare service

providers, insurance groups are encouraging their member to use wearable

fitness devices to be rewarded with lower premiums10 for maintaining a healthier

lifestyle. SNS Research estimates that mHealth centric wearable devices will

10

Wearable devices such as activity trackers and smart watches that measure and track health metrics (such as heart rate, breathing and stress levels), compile a large amount of data about the wearer throughout the day. That data could be shared and used by health insurance groups to determine health rates on a daily basis and reward
