This pack contains early learning printables to use with your child when reading

The Mitten by Jan Brett. The first half of the kit focuses on skills for younger

children and the second includes pages for more advanced preschoolers or

kindergarteners. I would highly recommend printing the activities from this set

onto cardstock so that they are sturdier for younger hands.

How many animals are in Nicki’s mitten?

Print, laminate and cut out the cards. Have your child clip

a clothespin to the correct number or use a dry erase

marker to circle the correct number. I punch a hole in the

top left corner of the cards and put them on a jump ring

{after mixing up the card numbers} so that they are not in

numerical order. You can also make them into a small

counting booklet and/or have your child point out the ani-

mals that are missing from the mitten.



Directional Words and Word Recognition

Print out the following pages {a mini-reader of sorts}.

Cut each sheet of paper in half and then staple the

pages together. Cut out the clip art below and have

your child glue the appropriate pieces to the story

pages. Use the vocabulary word sheet to help your child

identify some of the words in the story if needed.

Where is the Mitten?



The mitten is under the tree.

The mitten is next to Nicki.



The mitten is behind the rabbit.

The mitten is in front of the bear.



The mitten is on the badger.

The mitten is between the fox and the mole.



The mole is going into the mitten.

of 1st, 2nd, etc...places using either the number cards or the word

cards.
