Students in the College ofPerforming and Visual Artsmust leave UNC to make aname for themselves in pro-fessions that demand creativetalent.

For example, from May 3-4, a group of 18 graduatingacting and musical theatremajors explored the ins andouts of careers in LA for theSchool of Theatre Arts andDance’s fifth annual LAShowcase.

During the event, the stu-dents performed short skitsand songs at the FalconTheatre. Two theatre arts pro-fessors, David Grapes andKen Womble, directed the

skits. More than 70 industryprofessionals attended theshowcase.

Grapes oversaw the eventand said he believes that itserves as a means by whichhis students can network withestablished professionals.

“The students use theshowcase as a springboard totransition from college to acareer,” Grapes said. “It givesthem contacts for the future.”

The showcase did notonly consist of acting, how-ever. The participating stu-

dents were able to auditionfor film and television rolesand meet established actorsand writers.

Scott Sedita, the author of“The Guide to Making it toHollywood: Three Steps toSuccess, Three Steps toFailure,” lectured to the stu-dents on how to establishthemselves in film and televi-sion. Sedita’s book concernshis 25 years as an actingcoach and the three thingsneeded to be a successfulactor: talent, confidence andperseverance.

Additionally, University ofNorthern Colorado alumnusSteve Eastin, who playedEddie Cicotte in the KevinCostner film “Field ofDreams,” also presented tostudents.

The LA Showcase is a rela-tively new service PVA pro-vides to its students. For 15years, PVA has been sendingstudents to New York forshowcases, and, indeed, theysent a group of students thisyear on March 15.

The New York Showcaseis geared toward studentspursuing careers in theater,

but the LA Showcase isdesigned for students whowant to act in films and televi-sion shows.

If potential actors wantcareers in the entertainmentcapital of the world, theyneed agents. Students metwith agents who have ties toCBS, Nickelodeon andWarner Bros. In past years, 40UNC students have beensigned to agents at the show-case.

Above all else, however, the showcase illustrated toparticipants what life in LosAngeles is really like.

“Some of the studentsneed to get a feel for LA to seeif they can live there,” Grapessaid.

The following studentstook part in the showcase:Ben Burch, Trysten Cain,Devin Crane, Heidi Cheek,Jason Clark, Lindsay Cook,Eric Eidson, MehryEslaminia, BrandonGaregnani, Leslie Hoxworth,Megan Krusleski, TylerLedon, Jamie Mills, LynnseyOoten, Michelle Payler,Angela Pettigrew, ErinWatkins and Devin Crane.

The School of Art andDesign also recognized itsstudents Thursday eveningwith a portfolio reception atDoug’s Hang Up, a former artgallery located off of 10thStreet. At this event, graduat-ing arts and design studentswere able to share their workwith their colleagues.

The portfolio receptionwas coordinated by MarkFetkewicz, a professor of artsand design.

“This is a great townevent,” Fetkewicz said. “Andit is a way for our graduatingseniors to get their work outto the public.”

Not all of PVA’s studentswant time in the spotlight, though. Some of them justwant to influence anotherperson’s life. One such stu-dent is Justine Naibauer, asenior art education major.

Originally, Naibauerwanted to become a surgeon;she said she found proficien-cy in math and science and inhaving access to absoluteanswers.

However, in 2008, whenNaibauer was 20, she wenton a skiing trip that dra-matically changed her per-spective on her existence. She collided with a tree, and the impact was sopowerful that part of herbrain slammed against herskull.

After this accident,Naibauer spent three daysin a coma and 20 days withsevere amnesia.

“I had some traumaticevents, and art was reallymy only outlet,” she said.“It taught me to think formyself.”

The countless hours spentboth in and out of the class-room studying, learning andworking on assignments arepaying off for the more than1,400 UNC students celebrat-ing commencement Fridayand Saturday.

The University ofNorthern Colorado ishosting its 121st springgraduate and undergrad-uate commencement May6 and 7, respectively.

During the graduate cere-mony Friday at Butler-Hancock Hall, 291 springgraduates received master’s,specialist and doctoraldegrees and 188 summergraduates were recognized.

During the undergradu-ate ceremony today atNottingham Field, 1,127spring graduates will receivetheir diplomas and 350summer graduates will berecognized.

The five most-awardeddegrees are interdisciplinarystudies, business administra-tion, psychology, dietetics, and English language.

One graduating senior,Stephanie Adams, will bereceiving her bachelor’sdegree in child psychology.

Adams started her collegecareer at Fort Lewis College inDurango, but transferred toUNC the second semester ofher sophomore year.

“It was fun and it wasgreat, but I didn’t think I wasgetting the college experienceI wanted,” Adams said.

Even though she had notalways planned on attend-ing UNC, Adams said shehas had nothing but positive

experiences in every aspectof the university. Adams, now a Delta Zeta sororityalumna, said being a part ofGreek Life and sitting on thePanhellenic Council was oneof her best experiences.

“Even though ‘Greeks’may get a negative connota-tion, it is something that hasshaped me into the person Iwould have neverbeen able to be,”she said. “It’s justbeen all thesedoors and I don’tknow if I would beable to handlemyself in an effec-tive way withouthaving that learn-ing system of what Greeksinstill in people.”

Adams said she plans oncontinuing her education atUNC by studying clinicalcounseling in graduateschool, and following gradua-tion, go into play therapy withchildren with a psychologyprivate practice.

“I love kids. I’ve tried dif-ferent jobs that don’t involvekids, and I’m just not satisfiedat the end of the day,” shesaid. “My original major wasearly childhood develop-ment, and well, you don’treally get paid a lot workingwith healthy children, so Ithought it would be more funto go into something orientedto children who have had arough start.”

Through giving her ownlectures as a teacher’s assis-tant, Adams said she realizedshe enjoys teaching andwould consider doing it at theuniversity level as a sociologyprofessor, but plans to focuson being a therapist directlyfollowing graduation.

This summer, Adams willbe taking three online classesto complete her undergradu-ate degree, interning with thenon-profit Reflections forYouth in Fort Collins, whichhelps preteens and teens whohave trouble in school; teach-ing the new curriculum for Fitto Be Kids, a program thatteaches children how to make

healthy decisions;and helpingSherilyn Marrow,a communicationstudies professorat UNC, promoteher new book.

“Overall, it’s agreat university,”Adams said. “I feel

like since CU and CSU are soclose that UNC gets over-shadowed a lot. Since it’s asmall campus I’m going tomiss a lot of the studentsbecause you really get toknow a lot of people, and nowsince I’m leaving and a lot ofpeople I know are leaving andgoing their separate ways, that’s the hard part.”

Amy Jo Heatherly, a seniorgraduating with degrees inhistory with a secondary edu-cation emphasis and geogra-phy, said she is going to missher daily walks through cen-tral campus on her way toclass the most.

“I definitely think that’sone of the benefits of UNC,that it’s gorgeous,”Heatherly said. “From ahistory perspective, theyhave all the old buildingsand all of the tradition andhistorical significance.”

Heatherly is also involvedwith several history- andgeography-related organiza-tions on campus and said shewill miss the first few weeks of

the fall semester when shewould get to meet incomingstudents and others duringthe Fall Bizarre.

H e a t h e r l yhelped revive thePowell Club,UNC’s geographyclub, in 2007 andhas been theclub’s presidentsince 2008. Theclub focuses onthree main areas:academics, community serv-ice and socializing.

Heatherly, who is fromWyoming, said she knew shehad to get involved when shecame to UNC and found herniche with the College ofHumanities and SocialSciences.

“It’s become my homeaway from home,” she said.

Following graduation,Heatherly said she planson teaching high schoolhistory.

“I’ve always known Iwanted to be a teacher since Iwas in seventh grade,” shesaid. “I loved history and his-tory classes. When I grew up,my grandma, instead oftelling me princess stories, she would tell me stories ofthe old west and stories thatactually happened to her.”

Teaching high schoolstudents is Heatherly’s focusimmediately following grad-uation, but she said she hasthought about going to grad-uate school to receive a mas-ter’s degree in American his-tory and possibly teaching ata college level in a teachingprogram to help train neweducators.

This summer, Heatherlywill be in Washington, D.C. foran internship with the educa-

tion department of NationalGeographic. During this timeshe will be part of the initial

processing of edu-cational grantsrelated to historyand geography.

“I say this a lot,but I really do loveUNC,” Heatherlysaid. “It definitelymakes you feelwelcome here, and one of the

benefits is that we have reallyawesome faculty willing tohelp kids out. I wouldn’t havegotten where I am withoutthe support of my advisers.”

Shannon Oakley, a seniorgraduating with her bache-lor’s degree in special educa-tion, said the faculty and staffat UNC were supportive ofher throughout her time atthe university.

“They showed me mystrengths that I didn’t evenknow I had,” Oakley said. “Icouldn’t have done it withoutthe students, scholarships, professors, my friends inEaton — they got me throughthat. It was the support teamand teamwork.”

Oakley, who is a singlemother with two children, said her professors were very

flexible and would allow herto bring her children to class. She said her children, now 10and 12, are excited aboutschool and planning on goingto college because they sawthe experiences Oakley had.

Oakley said she hasknown that she wanted towork with children with spe-cial needs since high school, but when she got marriedand had children, her planschanged. Before she wentback to school, Oakley wasworking at an elementaryschool as a special educationparaprofessional.

Within the last five years,Colorado has changed therequirement for special edu-cation teachers from a mas-ter’s to a bachelor’s degree, soOakley decided it was hertime to go back to college.

“I have a little sister withspecial needs,” Oakley said. “Istarted at a young age. It wasmy compassion that mademe believe they should be inthe open, not hidden away.”

Following graduation,Oakley said she plans onfinding a job in either an ele-mentary, middle or highschool near Eaton and work-ing with children and adoles-cents with special needs.

I’d like to take the time to pro-pose a toast to the UNC ath-letic department.

It was an amazing and historicyear for sports here at theUniversity of Northern Coloradoand it’s not over yet.

For starters, the soccer team fin-ished fourth in the Big Sky andcompleted the regular season with10 wins, most for the program since2002, and featured 10 playersnamed to all-conference teams, including Danielle Birdsall, whowas named to the first team andtook home the Big Sky OffensiveMVP award.

The swimming & diving teamhad four athletes named to all-con-ference teams and women’s golffinished third in the Big Sky last

week behind a stellar performanceby Carleigh Silvers, who had athird-place individual finish.

The wrestling team had tworepresentatives, Justin Gaethje andCasey Cruz, at the NCAAChampionships this season.

The volleyball team finishedsecond in the Big Sky and took theeventual champion to five games inthe title match. Two volleyball play-ers were named to the all-confer-ence first team, and AmandaArterburn was named the school’sfirst-ever Big Sky Libero of the Yearwinner.

One win was all that kept thewomen’s basketball team fromhosting the conference tourna-ment, but to finish second in theBig Sky after being projected to fin-ish eighth is very impressive. Headcoach Jaime White was named co-coach of the year and had threeplayers named to all-conferenceteams. Additionally, CourtneyStoermer and D’shara Strange werenamed, and rightfully so, the co-defensive player of the year and

outstanding freshman, respectively. The football team now has a

new football coach, Earnest CollinsJr., who many on campus, includ-ing myself, believe can help turnthis program around. In the fewtimes I’ve spoken with Collins, heexudes a passion for football andfor coaching at his alma mater thathasn’t been seen in a while. It’srefreshing to have that kind of posi-tivity, and I believe come next fallthere will be a drastic change in thenumber of wins the football teamhas.

New coaches Carl Iwasaki andMark Montgomery have the base-ball and softball teams, respectively, near the top of their conferences.Iwasaki, another UNC alumnus, has also shown his pride in beingcoach of the Bears, a positive sign inmy mind of progress to come infuture seasons.

And you can’t forget the men’sbasketball team, led by B.J. Hill, afirst-year head coach who woncoach of the year, and all the play-ers who helped make it happen.

I’m sure I won’t be the only onewho will never forget the team’smagical season and first-ever NCAADivision I Tournament appearance.I was fortunate to be able to makethe trip to Tucson, Ariz. and thatexperience will stay with me forev-er, as will this school year for allsports across the board.

Such success can’t be measuredeasily, but taking into account howsmall of a school UNC is, athletics-wise, that final measure is astro-nomical.

The only way to repeat this suc-cess is to support our Bears morethan ever next school year. They allgave us an athletic year to remem-ber and we need to voice howthankful we are.

So, let us raise our glass andhonor these fine student-athletes,graduating or not, coaches andadministrators.

Say it with me now: Thank you,and go Bears!

As students pack theirbelongings and prepare toleave UNC after graduating, they can look forward to afuture of new opportunities, excitement and the continualquest for knowledge.

They are not the onlyones leaving, though. SevenUniversity of NorthernColorado professors arealso cleaning out theiroffices and saying goodbyeto the university.

Bill Perrill, a criminal jus-tice professor, is retiring after10 years of teaching. Beforecoming to UNC, he spent 30years in the Federal Bureau ofPrisons.

“A lot of what I brought tomy teaching is my experiencein prisons,” Perrill said. “Mymark is that I can share real-world experience and apply itto criminal justice theory.”

During his career in pris-ons, he served as a prisonwarden for 14 years inDuluth, Minn., Tucson, Ariz.,Ray Brook, NY., Englewood, and SeaTac, Wash. He moved22 times throughout hiscareer.

Perrill said his wife, whoworks for Poudre SchoolDistrict, is also retiring, andthey plan to spend time scubadiving, fishing, remodelingtheir home and participatingin volunteer work while con-sidering whether to embarkon a third career.

Though the job marketisn’t in the same state of eco-nomic success it once was,Perrill said helping studentsfind their path in criminal jus-tice was one of the mostrewarding parts of the job.Hearing from former stu-dents who have found happi-ness and prosperity in thefield was also a benefit.

“If they like what they’redoing, it’s a success,” he said.

Perrill was not only a

teacher, but said the life les-sons students taught himmade him a learner, as well.

“Be patient to students, especially when they’re com-ing from the work world,” hesaid. “Your expectations maybe too high, especially ifthey’re incoming freshmen orsecond-year students. Enjoywhat they have to offer, because they’re a differentgeneration.”

Carolyn Edwards, who isthe director of the School ofTeacher Education this year,is also retiring after almost 15years as a professor. Edwardsalso received her master’sand doctorate from UNC in1989 and ‘96, respectively.

Originally from Kansas,Edwards began teaching atAims Community College, teaching reading and writ-ing to students in a develop-mental services program, which measures the apti-

tude of incoming studentsto the college.

Once she came to UNC,she frequently worked onnational and state accredita-tion. In this year’s in-stateaccreditation, all areas of theuniversity met all standardswith no areas of concern, something Edwards said isunprecedented.

“Accreditation, I think, has been my most seriouscontribution,” she said.

During Edwards’ tenure, she also assisted in develop-ing an electronic system fortracking candidates. Now, thestate is implementing anidentifying number for eachteaching candidate to tracktheir progress and how it iscompared to those at otheruniversities. The school rec-ommends about 500 candi-dates each year.

Edwards said she original-ly came to UNC to teach

because she lived in Greeleyand found the school’s read-ing program a good fit. However, she said it’s nowtime to move on.

“I haven’t had a lot of timefor my family or grandkids, and they’re calling me, I hearthat,” she said.

During her tenure,Edwards also wrote numer-ous grants, something shesaid she enjoyed. One of herfavorites was a partnershipgrant for developing mathcurriculum in elementaryschools.

“It helped me do myresearch, and I’m more aboutreading and writing, but I feltit was a real service to thecommunity because we wereable to serve about 100 kids inmathematics and tutoring inafter-school programs,” shesaid.

As a professional in thereading field, in which stu-

dents are currently seeingdeclining comprehensionscores in standardized tests,Edwards offered advice tousher in a new era of readingand writing.

Edwards said those work-ing with developing studentsshould remember that theyare teaching to read and writeas well as content and memo-rization, and this is a key toboosting English scores.

“There are a lot of readingstrategies that these teacherscan teach to their kids toincrease comprehension andteach them to be better writ-ers,” she said.

Edwards also works withincoming freshmen in pre-view days and new studentorientations. She said UNC isa well-known institution forits teaching program, and stu-dents want to enroll to receivea high-quality education.

“We don’t have to try

and sell our program,” shesaid. “People know wehave the state mandate tobe the provider of teacherpreparation.”

Barry Rothaus, a UNC his-tory professor who has taughtmultiple generations of stu-dents, is retiring after 45 years.

“When I was interviewed,I met the president (DarrellHolmes), and he said, ‘If youwant to come to a universitythat is on the forefront of aca-demic change, this is theplace.’”

Throughout his tenure,Rothaus said conversing withfaculty and the camaraderiethey shared was one of hisfavorite memories.

UNC student-athleteshave made it a trend tograduate on time, evi-denced by a yearly reportpublished by the athleticdepartment, and this yearis no different.

About 60 UNC stu-dent-athletes will gradu-ate today, further boost-ing UNC’s alreadynotable graduation ratesfor athletes. The 2010Graduation Success Ratereport, published in thefall, compares UNC’s ath-letes to those of the othereight Big Sky Conferenceuniversities even thoughonly 11 of UNC’s 17 ath-letic teams compete inthe Big Sky.

Of the 11, UNC eitherleads or is tied for the leadin graduation success ratein five sports — men’s bas-ketball (92 percent), foot-ball (72) and tennis (100),and women’s soccer (96)and tennis (100). UNC alsoleads the Big Sky as a wholewith an 82 percent successrate for all sports, four per-centage points higher thanthe next closest conferenceteam (EasternWashington) and threepoints higher than theNCAA Division I average.

Jaime White, UNC’swomen’s basketballcoach, said recruitingintelligent and responsi-ble players to the schoolhas been the key for theuniversity to achievinghigh team GPAs and grad-uation rates, specificallyfor the women’s basket-ball team.

“I think most of thetime, most of the reflec-tion on that good of ascore comes from recruit-ing and recruiting kidsthat are committed, aca-demically,” White said.

White also said thewomen’s basketball teamwas 10th in NCAADivision I in team GPAthree years ago, 18th lastyear, and she expects theteam to be in the top 10again this season.

First-year footballcoach Earnest Collins Jr.said since he has gottenthe position, he has madeacademics a focal point inhow he runs the team.

“First minute I gothere, first meeting I had

with the players I talkedabout the importance ofacademics and what itmeans to me,” Collinssaid. “I tell the guys all thetime that about 99.9 per-cent of them won’t makeit to the NFL, so you bet-ter focus on getting thatdegree.”

UNC Assistant AthleticDirector for AcademicSuccess Jimmy Hendersonsaid the high success rate ofathletes is not by accident.

“I think the reasonwe’re top in the confer-ence and above the NCAAaverage is largely becausewe have a staff, includingour administration andour coaching staffs andpretty much everybody

here, that has the samefocus,” Henderson said.“And that focus is thatthese are students here toplay their sport.”

Because the membersof the athletic departmenthave been adamant inmaking sure academicsplay an important part inthe athletes’ college expe-rience, Henderson saidthat mentality rubs off onthe students.

“I think it’s just thatenvironment that’s createdthat allows this to happenbecause everyone buysinto it,” Henderson said.“So when you have acoaching staff that believesin this, the students believein graduation.”

UNC leads athlete graduation rates Thus, Naibauer found a

new love for life’s grandeur— something, she feels, isbest represented in artisticexpression.

The blossoming artistwanted to show young peo-ple that art can be morepowerful than scientific the-orems, so she decided tobecome an educator.

“Right now, in theschool system, it’s all about‘A plus B equals C’… but Ithink it’s important that stu-dents learn to think forthemselves; knowledge ofart can do that,” Naibauersaid. “I encourage criticalthinking with my students.”

Out of 1,200 art studentsat UNC, six were selected bytheir respective professors

for the Angie SouthardAward, which recognizesacademic excellence andalso comes with a financialstipend.

“She is very creative, tal-ented and, yes, a big dream-er,” said T.S. Berger, an artsand design professor.

Naibauer said she felthonored and blessed tohave been given the award. She also said she was grate-ful to the professors whonominated her.

Naibauer recently fin-ished student teaching atboth Butler ElementarySchool in Fort Lupton andGreeley West High School.Shortly after her studentteaching, she was offered aposition at Yuma HighSchool.
