Thank you for reading our InSight Magazine – known as “The Chamber Book”! This

publication is created to highlight the members of the Midstate Chamber of Commerce and the central Connecticut community. It is also known as THE RESOURCE for business people, residents and visitors. You can also find this stellar resource guide at www.thechamberbook.com.

The Midstate Chamber represents over 525 area businesses and organizations. Sometimes we work quietly behind the scenes with one-on-one meetings and other times we act more in the public arena with public policy statements like our Annual Legislative Action Agenda. We are involved in and work on the concerns that affect all businesses like housing, legislative issues, cradle to career education, transportation and workforce development. These are all regional initiatives that are important to the business community and that is the reason that we actively participate with a cadre of partners within and well beyond our own municipal borders, like the formation of the Nutmeg State Chamber Alliance.

In 2019, The Hamden Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Midstate Chamber of Commerce created the Nutmeg State Chamber Alliance - the first of its kind in Connecticut. This partnership is not a merger but a concerted effort to best support individual chamber members on both a local and a regional basis. With combined membership of over 900, this allows us to have a greater impact both on the business climate within the state and with officials on the local, state, and federal levels. The Midstate Chamber exists for the sole purpose of our members and while we offer many special events and programs to connect our members to each other and keep them informed, our work does not stop there.

In March of 2020, our state shut down due to the COVID-19 crisis. It is times like these that remind

us of the important work that we provide in terms of “member support”. During this ongoing COVID-19 crisis, many of our members have experienced unprecedented hardships due to loss of revenue from closures, event postponements and lost customers. We continue to work harder than ever for our members during this crisis, and have become the depository AND disseminator of critical, credible information on a special resource page on our website. This also included working with our local, state and federal officials to free up emergency loans, grants and other resources needed to support our members and their employees.

We are in this TOGETHER and will get through this TOGETHER. Our motto has become: “Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.” We are all working in unprecedented and uncertain times, but we remain committed to our members and communities. Through the annual and voluntary investments

The Midstate Chamber of Commerce is directed by a variety of committees that shape

the Chamber’s goals, services and future initiatives. ALL committees are OPEN - any member in good standing is welcome to join a chamber committee. We encourage you to join any of the following standing committees:The Education Committee provides school to career opportunities for students of all ages, educators and businesses. The commiteee promotes business education and training partnerships in the central CT area. The Education Committee also provides the continuity between projects and coordinates special events, like the Business Expo and Annual Dinner.

The Education Awards Committee is responsible for the administration of the annual student awards: Sanford S. Shorr Award, HOLA Award, the Young Business Leaders’ Dan M. Hunter Community Service Award and the Bruce H. Kannenberg & Jonal Laboratories Inc. Award. The awards are for area residents graduating from high school as well as for students returning for undergraduate and graduate studies. Applications are available in November of each year at area schools and at www.midstatechamber.com - under the Resources - Community Services tab.

The Annual Awards Committee is responsible for reviewing the applications for the business and community leadership awards and selecting the recipients of these awards. All awardees are recognized at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting in April. You’ll find more information on chamber awards on pages 11 & 12.

The Government & Business Development Committee monitors local, state and federal legislative issues impacting business. They also consider programs to add value to Chamber members’ investment. In addition, this committee creates the Chamber’s Legislative Action Agenda and coordinates events like Legislative Breakfasts and Pizza, Pasta & Politics: events that directly connect our members with our elected officials!

Chamber Committees

The Marketing & Publicity Committee helps to develop Chamber marketing materials that increase the visibility of the Midstate Chamber to members, prospective members and to the community. They assist with the chamber’s marketing efforts and recommend content and oversee the publication of InSight, the CHAMBER MAGAZINE: Annual Membership Directory & Community Guide. The committee played a vital role in creating the image for an electronic billboard, coined the term and marketing initiative “Chamber of Choice” and played a key role in the chamber’s video testimonial program and in upgrading our social media presence - especially with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram!

The Membership Committee develops, supports and enhances the membership efforts of The Midstate Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber Ambassadors make up the Membership Committee and are a team who serve as “liaisons” for the Chamber. These individuals have the critical role of retaining and increasing membership of the Midstate Chamber in the communities of Berlin, Cheshire, Meriden, Southington, Wallingford and beyond. The group recently started a new program: Chamber Meet & Greet events to increase the visibility of the Midstate Chamber - they hold “pop-up” events throughout the area and prospective members are invited to get a true “feel” for this spectacular organization.

The Golf Committee begins work in January to plan, coordinate and execute all activities surrounding the annual

tournament in June which raises funds for Chamber activities MOST IMPORTANTLY, the annual Sanford S. Shorr Education Awards. 2020 marks the tournament’s 33rd Year!

The Hispanic Outreach Leaders In Action Committee raises additional funds for

education awards for students of Hispanic heritage. As a direct result of the group’s annual fundraisers, 28 area students have each received $1,000 awards for their continuing education. HOLA was formed in 2005 with the following mission: To reach out & engage Hispanic individuals and businesses in Greater Meriden so that through the Chamber, they can obtain exposure, growth, and involvement in the community. Objectives include: » Encourage participation in the

The Young Business Leaders was formed in 2007. Members are engaged in community life, expanding professional and social opportunities and serve as ambassadors for the area. This group is geared toward professionals between the ages of 21 and 39 however the group welcomes people of all ages to attend their many events that include Speed Networking, community service events, professional development and social events, monthly meetings and even more! Their Miniature Golf Tournament is the main fundraiser for the Dan M. Hunter Community Service Education Award. The group has collected and donated, several tons of food for Meriden & Wallingford soup kitchens and pantries through the assistance of the United Way of Meriden & Wallingford.

The Annual Dinner Committee is a “short term” special events committee that organizes the Midstate Chamber’s Annual Meeting & Dinner, including the Silent Auction, theme and program.

The Health and Wellness Council was formed in 2008 and sponsors workshops, activities and many other events to support and raise awareness of health & wellness through the year. The council is dedicated to identifying and promoting best practices in community and employee health and wellness supporting advocacy for health care access, literacy, policy and programs. The council is OPEN to any and all businesses – for profit, not for profit, healthcare and non - healthcare.

The Board of Directors is a diverse group of individuals made up of business leaders from different sectors to provide oversight to the Chamber’s program of work and set policy for our organization. Representative of our diverse membership, these dedicated individuals serve (2) 3-year terms. The group, listed below, was elected to serve on May 27, 2020.

The Sanford S. Shorr Education

Awards histori-cally had been given to students that are Meriden residents who are graduating high school as well as students returning to college. These awards are in honor of Sanford S. Shorr, who served as Executive Vice President of The Midstate Chamber of Commerce for 29 years. The award winners exemplify the high values, outstanding character, and dedication to community service that have, and continue to, epitomize the life of Sanford S. Shorr. Proceeds from the Chamber’s Annual Golf Tournament support these Education Awards.

In 2015, our Board of Directors voted to EXPAND the eligibility of the appli-cants. NOW, any Meriden resident may apply AND ALSO any Midstate Chamber member in good standing - employ-ees and dependents may apply for the awards!

In 2006 we added an additional award from the Chamber’s HOLA (Hispanic Outreach Leaders In Action) Commit-tee that was formed in October 2005. Applicants must be Hispanic students graduating from high school or return-ing to college. Proceeds for this award are generated through fundraisers by the (Hispanic Outreach Leaders In Action) Committee.

In 2007 the Chamber’s Young Busi-ness Leaders of Connecticut were born. YBLCT members are engaged in com-munity life, are interested in expanding professional and social opportunities and serve as ambassadors for the greater Meriden area. The group created the Dan M. Hunter Community Service Educa-tion Award in 2009 - it is given annually to a graduating high school student who shows exemplary grades, above average participation in school-related activies and has proven to be a valued asset to his/her community.

In 2015, Bruce H. Kannenberg & Jonal Laboratories, Inc. Education Award was added. This 4 year award for $1,000 per year is for a Meriden resident graduating from a Meriden Public School who will be pursuing a degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) or Busi-ness.

The statewide program uses technology to reduce barriers and increase the independence of clients - ranging from the elderly to disabled individuals.

The Annual Excellence in Education Award was also created in 2014 to honor an individual(s) or organization(s) in the public or private sector who contributes to education or an educational institution or program to advance / expand our education system. The 2019 recipients were GUS Robotic Team 228, Inc. and Community Classroom Collaborative Transition Program.

The William Sears Rice Award honors an individual(s) who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to downtown Meriden. Girls, Inc., was recognized in 2019 with this award.

Meriden is a thriving, diverse and growing community with a population of approximately 62,000 and has an area of 24 square miles. Meriden is 17 miles from

Hartford, 18 miles from New Haven, 90 miles from New York and 120 miles from Boston. Meriden is at the crossroads of routes 91, 15, 5 and I-691. The new Hartford Line rail service provides 17 trains / day between New Haven and Hartford, and 12 of those trains continuing to Springfield. The Hartford Line quickly and easily connects you to New Haven Line service to New York City, Amtrak Northeast Corridor rail services, and Shore Line East service, as well as CTfastrak bus rapid transit service in the Hartford/New Britain area. Meriden, Wallingford and Berlin all have new train stations to service commuters and visitors!

The Record-Journal is the local daily newspaper. Other regional papers include the Hartford Courant and New Haven Register. Meriden is home to WMMW (AM) and is the city of license for WKSS-FM. CT Public Radio, WNPR – FM90.5, broadcasts from West Peak in Meriden.

The civic vitality in the city is reflected in its various clubs, neighborhood associations, organizations and houses of worship. Countless opportunities exist for community service, worship, education, recreation and enjoyment. The support of these groups is critical, since much of their work and fundraising is directed back into the area.

Wallingford is located just south of Meriden and is home to over 44,000 residents and covers an area of 39.8 square miles. Situated in the Hartford-New Haven corridor, Wallingford is traversed by U.S. Highway Route 5, Interstate 91, State Highways Route 15 (Wilbur Cross Parkway), Route 68, Route 71 and Route 150.

Berlin, Connecticut, the home of “The Yankee Peddler”, is located at the geographic center of the state. It has a population of around 20,000 within its 26 square miles. Meriden and Berlin share the “hanging hills” which provide for excellent hiking.

The town of Meriden was founded

in May 1806 and became a City in June 1867. Meri-den was originally part of Walling-ford. In 1727 it was granted a separate meetinghouse, named for the town of Meriden, West Midlands, England. Myth has it that it was named after the Merry Den Tavern that was located near present day Route 5. The oldest house still stand-ing is the Solomon Goffe house built in 1711. In the 1800’s Meriden earned the nickname “Silver City” due to the large number of cutlery and related products which were manufactured here by several companies including International Silver and Meriden Cutlery. The town of Wallingford was estab-

lished on May 12, 1670. In the 1800’s, Wallingford’s industry expanded primarily with small pewter and Britannia ware manufacturers. By mid-century, Robert Wallace acquired the formula for nickel silver and established with Samuel Simp-son, R. Wallace & Company the forerun-ner of Wallace Silversmiths. Later during this period many of the small silver and Britannia plants combined to form the International Silver Company with its headquarters in Meriden. Wallingford is the 23rd most populous community of Connecticut’s 169 cities and towns.

In 1659, Sergeant Richard Beckley purchased 300

acres from the Mat-tabasset Indians to become the first settler in what was to become Berlin. Other families followed from Farmington in 1686 to begin the first settle-ment on Christian Lane. In 1785 the Town was incorporated and was renamed Berlin (was known as Kensington on the west side and Worthington on the east side. New Britain was part of Berlin until 1850). In the middle of the 18th century, emigrants from Ireland set up the first winware business pedaling their wares from house to house. Therefore Berlin became the birth place of “The Yankee Peddler”. In 1886, the State Legislature granted a charter for what became the Berlin Fair which is still held annually on the first weekend in October. Opened in 2016, the award winning Meriden Green is a 14-acre flood control/park and economic development project located in the heart of downtown Meriden. The Meriden Green, formerly known as the “Hub” site, includes several key features including a public park with gathering places and links to the regional greenway system, pedestrian links to the new transit center, and an amphitheater and great lawn area for public events. Parks & Recreation...Meriden’s outstanding system of parks and open space is one of the finest in the entire state. With over 3,000 acres of park land, the total percentage of Meriden’s land devoted to parks is 17.6%, and no other city in New England can match that! The city’s scenic location offers infinite opportunities to enjoy the beauties of the outdoors. East Peak/West Peak, the mountain on which Castle Craig is situated, is the highest elevation within 25 miles of the coastline from Cadillac Mountain in Maine to Florida. Castle Craig rises 1,002 feet above sea level and offers a spectacular view of the area, and on a clear day, even the Sleeping Giant Mountain range to the south, along with New Haven, Long Island Sound and the edge of Long Island may be seen. The Castle Craig Tower atop the peak is a regional landmark and is the silhouette in The Midstate Chamber of Commerce Logo. Castle Craig is located inside Hubbard Park.

Hubbard Park, built with consultants from John Olmstead, the step son of Frederick Law Olmstead, who designed Central Park in New York City, is one of the loveliest in New England. The park covers 1,800 acres and offers skating in the winter on Mirror Lake, tennis courts, a pavilion, swings and playground equipment for children, hiking, Bandshell, swimming pool, outdoor education and picnic facilities. Hubbard Park is the scene of wonderful seasonal activities, including the Daffodil Festival in

April, when 600,000 daffodils display their spectacular beauty. This event draws visitors from throughout New England and beyond. Several events are scheduled year round in the park - even in December, when, during the Festival of Lights, the park is aglow with thousands of lights fashioned into fantastic sculptures. Outdoor music concerts at the James J. Barry Bandshell are often presented free of charge and offer a variety of music to suit every taste. Meriden also offers 15 public parks and 15 playgrounds, picnic grounds with fireplaces, a Municipal golf course, 10 tennis courts, 30 ball fields, 9 basketball courts, 1 public swimming pool, and 2 stadiums. Falcon Field received a $4 million reconstruction , with artificial turf making it a state of the art facility for football, soccer and more. The Quinnipiac River Linear Walking Trail is a spectacular place to walk starting at Red Bridge and ending near the Meriden/Cheshire town line; phase II was completed in 2013 with another 1.2 miles extending behind Wilcox and Platt High Schools.
