The Metric System

The Metric System is …- based on 10

- based on only three units of measure: the meter, liter, and gram

The Metric System

Meter-distance (instead of inch, foot, yard, or mile)

Liter-volume—liquids (instead of ounce, cup, pint, quart, & gallon)

Gram-mass (“weight”) (instead of ounces, pounds, and tons)

The Metric System

The same prefixes are used to convert meters, liters, and grams to smaller and smaller units.

milli- 1/1000 or .001centi- 1/100 or .01kilo- 1,000

1 meter = 100 centimeters

1 meter = 1000 millimeters

1 kilometer= 1000 meters
