Our syna-

gogue will be

honored this

month when our board member,

Alia Garcia Ureste, will be sworn in

as a commissioner of the Texas

Holocaust and Genocide Commis-

sion. This historic appointment

reflects the recognition of Gover-

nor Rick Perry regarding the work

that our synagogue and communi-

ty has done teaching students and

adults in El Paso the message of

the Holocaust and genocide

against nations, including the

Jewish people and the Anusim. In

fact, the THGC has also issued a

contract to UTEP, to prepare

modules for teaching professors

how to address the topics of how

to guide students to make correct

ethical decisions and choices. As a

part-time faculty member of UTEP

who teaches a course covering

Judaism, the Holocaust, anti-

Semitism, and crypto-Jews, I am

truly honored to be a mentor to

Alia, the rabbi of Congregation

B’nai Zion, the Director of the

Anusim Center, and being part of

the UTEP faculty.

I am not sure if our congrega-

tion fully understands the impact

of this appointment and how each

of us should be proud to be

associated with Congregation

B’nai Zion. At a time in history

when survivors of the Holocaust

are few, when Holocaust denial is

an increasing problem on the

internet, when leaders of coun-

tries are allowed to hold symposi-

ums denying the Holocaust, when

anti-Semitism and attacks against

rabbis and Jewish institutions

throughout Europe are increasing,

we need to take a very serious

look at organizations and places

locally, state-wide, and nationally

which combat the lies, the hatred,

and the desire of our enemies to

hurt and destroy us. Our support,

both financially and through

renewed attendance at and partici-

pation in our synagogue at a time

when economic problems are

hurting us significantly, must

become a priority for us.

Sustaining the efforts of the El

Paso Holocaust Museum and the

Anusim Center must be a vital

part of our personal agenda. The

best way to confront and defeat

the evil forces out there that

dehumanize mankind through

beheadings, terrorist attacks, and

anti-Semitic activities is to stand

proud and tall, come to syna-

gogue services and activities, give

generously to our congregation,

to the Museum and Center, send

our kids to the Jewish Academy

and Talmud Torah, and protest

the lies and hateful propaganda of

our enemies. I implore each and

every one of us to WAKE UP. I am

not inventing the serious condi-

tions which are facing the very

survival of the Jewish community,

but I urge each of us to make a

serious commitment to support all

of these efforts and activities I

have mentioned.

In addition, and in a very

positive way, we should not

minimize but rather capitalize on

the enormity of Alia’s appoint-

ment. As Governor Rick Perry’s

gubernatorial appointment, Alia

Garcia Ureste will bring dedica-

tion, integrity, and commitment to

this very important commission.

Alia and her husband, Gilbert, did

their return to Judaism with me a

few years ago, visited Israel with

our synagogue, attend services

regularly, and were remarried in

the Jewish tradition under a

Huppah in our sanctuary. Last

year Alia observed her adult Bat

Mitzvah. Alia, Gilbert and their

children moved to El Paso from Ft.

Stockton to become active members of the Jewish commu-

nity, our synagogue and to provide a solid Jewish educa-

tion for her children, who now attend the El Paso Jewish

Academy, the Pre-School of the JCC and our own Talmud

Torah. In her own words, Alia told me that her appointment

serves as “evidence that family and friends, members of

Congregation B’nai Zion, and the board and supporters of

the Anusim Center, have all helped her on her journey, that

she appreciates all that we have done for her to make her

dream become a reality,” and I know that she will treat this

appointment with humility, with sincere dedication and

conviction.

It is my hope that we will attend Alia’s ceremony and

appointment which will take place on Monday, October 13

at the Anusim Center, 4100 Wallenberg at 6:30 p.m. to

8:30 p.m. That evening Minyan will be at the center instead

of the synagogue. How ironic it is that the ceremony is on

the holiday of Sukkot, when we thank God that Hashem

protected us on our way back to the Promised Land after

leaving 400 years as slaves in Egypt through the Sukkah. It

is also on Columbus Day, so in addition to celebrating his

birthday and his expedition to the New World, we also

remember the evil intentions of King Ferdinand and Queen

Isabella who tried to rid Spain of the Jewish people through

genocide and expulsion.

May we together celebrate on October 13 this year, the

achievements of our congregation for 115 years, the

contributions of the Jewish people to the world, and the

appointment of Alia Garcia Ureste as a commissioner of the

Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission.

In my time as president of Congregation B'nai

Zion, I have had the great privilege of seeing many

volunteers take the initiative to match a skill or

strength that they possess with a need in our con-

gregation and take action. Whether helping at the

office while we are short on staff, actively serving on

the board and committees, or making generous

contributions, these individuals have had an enor-

mous impact on our congregation, and all of us owe

a great deal of gratitude to them.

We have just gone through a period of serious

introspection and my hope is that each one of us can

enter this New Year with a heightened desire to join

the many volunteers already helping our congrega-

tion. I am convinced that with your commitment we

can make B'nai Zion the congregation we all desire

for the future generations.

G'mar Hatimah Tovah and have an easy fast,

President, Congregation B’nai Zion

[email protected]

By now you probably have

noticed that my messages tend to

be on the short side of the spec-

trum. This is probably due to the

fact that writing is not my forte,

mostly because of my training as

an engineer. I find comfort in the

well-documented fact that engineers tend to be less

than stellar communicators. One person that I ad-

mire for being an excellent communicator is Rabbi

Leon. I am always amazed at the eloquence with

which he can express himself through his sermons

and how he keeps us engaged.

Now, why am I starting this month’s message

with a public recognition of my “not so very good

communication skills” and Rabbi Leon’s excellence in

this area? Well, because I wholeheartedly believe

that if all of us took the time to find those things at

which we excel and made the commitment to use

them in the service of our congregation, we would

be able to make B’nai Zion a thriving community.

All of our thoughts and

prayers were answered when I

received the following email from

our WLCJ National President

stating the approval of El Paso's

Sisterhood transferring from the

IntraContinental Region to the

Pacific Southwest Region. Yes,

the approval had to be made by the national board

and thanks to Margie Miller, who pushed a positive

and aggressive outline of why we should change

over made it a reality. Margie is the wonder woman

who paid us a visit in the midst of planning a nation-

al convention in New Jersey this summer. In fact,

when I wrote Ronnie Fox about the possible change,

she was delighted stating she had been trying for

years to make this happen. Ronnie, as many of you

know, is a past president of our sisterhood and was

president of the Southwest Region. Please go to

WLCJ.org and learn about the new region we repre-

sent and get the facts about everything Women's

League does for you and all of us.

Here is an excerpt from the letter I received:

Dear Sandy:

We greatly appreciated your contacting Women’s League with your request to change your region associa-tion from IntraContinental to Pacific Southwest. We acknowledge your commitment to Women's League, and understand the reasoning behind this request.

We are all in agreement that your sisterhood will be a better fit geographically with the Pacific Southwest Region. This letter will serve as formal acknowledgement of B’nai Zion Sisterhood’s new affiliation with Pacific Southwest Region of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, effective immediately. We wish B’nai Zion Sisterhood much success in your new home. We know that you will be an asset to your new region and hope that your connection to Women’s League for Conservative Judaism will become even stronger.

B’Shalom,

Carol S. Simon, WLCJ International President

We look forward to a great year ahead. Patty

Hutman, our Program Vice President, is doing an

excellent job planning events that you will be appre-

ciative of and look forward to attending. If you need

“After Yair Berman left her and shattered all her dreams, the devastated Shlomtzion Drore escaped as far as possible from him and her intensely religious life in Jerusalem, becoming an interior designer in secular Tel-Aviv. Twenty-one years later, her daughter has become engaged to his son, and Shlomtzion is forced to visit the controversial settlement in which Yair lives, not only to plan the wedding but to confront her former love and the mistakes of her life. Set in Israel between the Six Day War and the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, If You Awaken Love is the intensely moving story of a stormy and spiritual young girl and her love-hate relationships with her childhood sweet-heart, with her father, and with God.”

Hi, I am Julian Cohen and in the 7th Grade at Da Vinci.

My parents are Alan and Debra Cohen. On October 11, 2014, I will become a Bar Mitzvah. To me this means I will not be completely independent but in fact on the road to independence with greater responsi-bilities to family and community. The Bar Mitzvah project I chose is to volunteer at the Holocaust Museum. I have many interests and hobbies. One is scouting with Troop 613 from B’nai Zion Synagogue and the other is playing video games. Also, I enjoy my British Beagle, Hunter, who we adopted 5 weeks ago, and has since become a part of our family. Sports are important to me, especially soccer and baseball. In the future, I want to be in the Navy and have a medical career.

October 11, 2014 My name is Elise Ehrlich and I am in the 7th grade at St. Mark’s. My parent’s are William and Jennifer and my brother is Adin. My grandparents are Herb and

Brenda Ehrlich and Joe and Lorri Halow. When I grow up I want to be either a plastic surgeon or an oncologist. When I am not busy with schoolwork or volunteering my time, I like to read, draw, play tennis and play the piano. My Bat Mitzvah is October 18, 2014. I am excited to have this date for my Bat Mitzvah because the Parsha is B’reisheet. I feel that it is the perfect date since it relates to my mitzvah projects, Remember Us and Make A Wish. These two mitzvah projects are special to me because I am helping to make a difference by participating in both programs. The Holocaust mitzvah project, Remember Us, helps to keep the memory alive of those children who lost their lives in the Holocaust. I am hoping to keep the memory alive of Eva Erlich, a 5 year old who lost her life in the Holocaust. By helping the Make A Wish program in El Paso, I am bringing joy to the Wish Kids that aren’t as fortunate as I am. By participating in these programs and studying for my Bat Mitzvah, I now feel like I have accomplished many things in my growth to becoming an adult in the eyes of Judaism. I have enjoyed my studies and look forward to becoming a Bat Mitzvah.
